The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Ondo State on Public Enlightenment, Comrade Olufemi Lawson, has lauded Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for his visionary leadership and commitment to positioning the state as a trailblazer in technological innovation through the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Lawson in a statement following the recent Ondo State Artificial Intelligence Adoption Summit, described the Governor’s foresight in embracing AI as “a defining moment in the state’s march toward a smarter, more inclusive, and digitally driven governance model.”

The two-day summit, organized by the State Information Technology Agency (SITA), is being hosted under the theme of responsible and inclusive AI adoption, with participants drawn from government institutions, academia, private sector innovators, and youth-led tech initiatives.

Lawson particularly commended the Executive Chairman of SITA, Hon. Tomide Akinribido, for his “exceptional leadership, dedication, and vision,” noting that his stewardship is turning SITA into a hub of innovation and a key driver of Ondo State’s digital transformation agenda.

Quoting from Akinribido’s welcome address at the event, the SSA said: “This summit is more than an event; it is a movement, a call to action for governments, industries, academia, and citizens to embrace artificial intelligence not as a threat, but as an enabler of progress, innovation, and inclusive growth.”

Lawson praised the emphasis on ethical, transparent, and inclusive AI deployment, stressing that the summit underscores the Governor’s broader commitment to using technology to enhance public service delivery, drive economic growth, and improve the quality of life of citizens.

He further noted that under Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration, Ondo State has made remarkable strides in digital governance, automation of public services, and capacity building among civil servants and youths, which have collectively laid the groundwork for this new AI initiative.

“Governor Aiyedatiwa’s decision to champion AI adoption demonstrates courage and clarity of purpose. It reflects a leadership that is not afraid of the future but is determined to shape it responsibly,” Lawson said.

He added that the government’s partnership with innovators and technology stakeholders through SITA represents a sustainable model of public-private collaboration in advancing the state’s digital ecosystem.

As deliberations continue at the summit, the SSA expressed optimism that the outcome would define Ondo State’s strategic roadmap for AI integration in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, security, and governance, making the Sunshine State a reference point in Nigeria and beyond.

“The Aiyedatiwa administration is not just building infrastructure; it is building intelligence, transforming governance through knowledge, data, and innovation,” Lawson said.

Era of owing workers’ salaries in Ondo State gone — Aiyedatiwa

Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State says the era of owing workers’ salaries is gone in the state.

Aiyedatiwa said this at the combined 12th to 23rd convocation of the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), on Saturday.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to repositioning education in the state

The governor, at the event, ordered the payment of three months’ salaries to the institution’s staff.

He recalled that the polytechnic could not pay its workers’ salaries until he took the mantle of leadership and provided special funds to clear the arrears.

Aiyedatiwa commended the institution’s management and students for their patience during the trying time, saying he rescued the polytechnic from a comatose state and impending total collapse.

The governor, who approved the renovation of the RUGIPO staff school and granted their request for a vehicle, expressed concern that the last convocation held in the institution was in 2013.

He, however, reiterated his administration’s commitment to upgrading the polytechnic to a University of Agriculture, Science, and Technology, which would enhance technological education in the state.

Aiyedatiwa urged the polytechnic’s alumni to support their alma mater for speedy development.

Army hails Aiyedatiwa for response to terror alert in Ondo

The Nigerian Army, 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, Ondo State, has commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa-led administration for its swift response to the recent security alert over a planned terrorist attack on some parts of the State.

The Department of State Services (DSS) had raised the alarm about an imminent attack on Eriti Akoko and Oyin Akoko communities in Akoko North-West Local Government Area, as well as Owo town in Owo Local Government Area, by members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The warning was contained in a memo dated October 20, 2025 to the Brigade Commander, 32 Artillery Brigade, Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery, Owena Cantonment, Akure.

According to the memo signed by H. I. Kana, Director of the DSS in Ondo State, “Intelligence confirmed plans by members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorist group to carry out coordinated attacks on communities in Ondo and Kogi States anytime soon.”

Commending Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration, the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, Major Njoka Irabor, noted that the governor’s prompt action in convening an emergency security meeting and directing all security agencies to be on full alert demonstrated his commitment to protecting the lives and property of citizens.

Major Irabor, who spoke during an official visit to the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, in Akure on Thursday, expressed appreciation to the state government for its continuous support to the military and other security formations.

He recalled that the Governor recently presented utility vehicles and other operational equipment to security agencies to enhance their efficiency and operational readiness across the state.

According to him, the synergy between the state government and security agencies has contributed greatly to the relative peace being enjoyed in Ondo State.

He pledged the Nigerian Army’s continued collaboration with other security agencies to ensure that Ondo remains a safe and stable environment for residents and investors.

Remarking, Ajanaku commended the Army for its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the people of the state from attacks.

He assured that the Ministry of Information and Orientation would continue to support the military and other security agencies through effective information dissemination and public enlightenment.

Ajanaku also emphasised the importance of public vigilance, urging citizens to report any suspicious or unlawful activities in their communities to the appropriate authorities.

He noted that timely intelligence from the public plays a vital role in helping the government and security agencies prevent criminal acts and maintain peace.

The commissioner reaffirmed the Aiyedatiwa administration’s dedication to a secure and prosperous Ondo State, stressing that collaboration, vigilance, and communication remain key to sustaining peace and development.

Ondopoly Alumni hails Aiyedatiwa for breaking 12-year convocation jinx

The Alumni Association of Ondo State- owned Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), has hailed Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for ending the institution’s 12-year break from holding convocations.

The institution had earlier announced that it would graduate about 25,000 students during its 12th–23rd combined convocations scheduled for Saturday.

Acting Rector, Mr. Olorunwa Adegun, made this known at a news conference to herald the week-long convocation activities.

He noted that the last convocation was held in 2013 and lauded Governor Aiyedatiwa, the Visitor to the polytechnic, for his decisive intervention that made the event possible.

In a statement yesterday, the National Executive Council of RUGIPO Alumni Association described the governor’s approval for the convocation as “a landmark decision that has restored pride to thousands of graduates across the globe and rekindled hope in the hearts of current students and stakeholders.”

In the statement by Samuel Asulewon, an engineer, the association said the governor’s action went beyond a mere celebration, describing it as “a bold commitment to education, institutional legacy and youth development in Ondo State.”

The statement added that ‘’these initiatives are aimed at strengthening the foundation of the institution and deepening the legacy of unity, growth and service among its graduates.’’

We’re working with DSS, Police, Army to prevent ‘terror attacks’ in Ondo, Aiyedatiwa assures

Ondo Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has called on the residents of the State to remain calm and not panic over reports of a possible “terrorist attack,” assuring that his administration is working closely with all relevant security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and properties.

Aiyedatiwa, in a statement on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, said his administration was in constant communication with the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Police Force, and the Nigerian Army to forestall any form of security breach in the state.

This comes after a leaked memo from the DSS indicated that suspected members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) were planning coordinated attacks on communities in Ondo and neighbouring Kogi State.

The confidential memo, dated October 20, 2025 to the Brigade Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Owena Cantonment, Akure, warned that intelligence reports had confirmed plans by ISWAP operatives to strike simultaneously at selected locations in the two states.

Signed by H.I. Kana on behalf of the State Director of Security, the memo identified Eriti Akoko and Oyin Akoko in Akoko North West LGA and Owo town in Owo LGA of the state among the potential targets.

According to the document, the terrorist group had already commenced surveillance on “soft targets” in the affected areas, urging the military to heighten security vigilance.

“The groups have commenced surveillance on potential soft targets in the above-mentioned locations. Consequently, there is a need to scale up the level of security alertness in the various communities to forestall any untoward situation,” the memo stated.

But Aiyedatiwa said his government was already aware of the security alert and had taken proactive steps to safeguard residents, especially those in border communities.

Aiyedatiwa said security has been beefed up across the state, particularly in identified flashpoints, while surveillance and intelligence gathering efforts have been intensified.

“The Ondo State Government, led by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, is in constant contact with security agencies and is taking several steps to protect residents, especially those in border communities, so that Ondo State can remain one of the safest states in the country,” the statement reads.

The Governor further advised residents to avoid panic, go about their normal activities, and report any suspicious movements to the nearest security formation.

“Once again, we appeal to residents to remain calm, go about their normal daily activities, refrain from taking laws into their hands, and provide any information that may help prevent any threat in any part of the state,” it added.

The statement clarified that the leaked memo was part of routine intelligence-sharing among security agencies and government authorities, describing such communications as a standard practice in preventing threats.

“These intelligence reports often contain varying levels of threat assessment and are used in joint operations by security agencies to enhance vigilance and take proactive measures,” it noted.

The government reaffirmed that the state government and security operatives were fully engaged in ensuring that the safety and peace of the state were not compromised.

“The public can be assured that these reports are being acted upon, and necessary precautions are being taken to ensure safety and security,” the statement said.

“The emphasis remains on maintaining vigilance and cooperation between security agencies and the government to prevent and respond to any potential threats.”

The alert comes three years after suspected ISWAP militants carried out a deadly attack on a Catholic church in Owo, killing more than 40 worshippers during Sunday mass.

In recent months, security experts have voiced concerns over the spread of terrorist activities into parts of southern Nigeria, after years of insurgent violence that had been largely confined to the country’s Northeast.

Ondo poly to graduate 25,000 as Aiyedatiwa breaks 12-year convocation jinx

Ondo State-owned Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO) will graduate about 25,000 students during its 12th to 23rd combined convocations scheduled for Saturday.

Acting Rector, Mr. Olorunwa Adegun, made this known yesterday at a news briefing to herald the week-long convocation.

He described the event as a “jinx-breaking convocation” after 12 years of inactivity.

Adegun said the last convocation was held in 2013. He hailed the visitor to the polytechnic, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, for his decisive intervention that made the event possible.

He described the long absence of convocations as unacceptable, noting that Aiyedatiwa’s administration had shown uncommon commitment to restoring the institution’s lost glory.

“When I assumed office in October 2023, the polytechnic was in an intensive care unit – workers morale was at its lowest, salaries were unpaid for 14 months, and payments were made irregularly, sometimes as low as five per cent,” he said.

The rector said the institution was enmeshed in industrial crises, legal disputes and loss of accreditation for several academic programmes.

He added that the polytechnic’s business enterprises and staff school were non-functional, while it had lost its status as a JAMB UTME centre.

Adegun, however, said with Governor Aiyedatiwa’s support, the institution had witnessed a remarkable turnaround.

He said the governor approved special intervention funds that reduced the backlog of 40 months of unpaid salaries to just three, and financed the re-accreditation of 68 programmes by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

The rector added that the governor also released funds for the convocation, noting that without such support, the event would not have been possible due to financial constraints.

He said the ‘’polytechnic has now regained stability in its academic calendar and industrial relations,’’ adding that 2024 was the first year in over a decade without any industrial crisis.

Adegun disclosed that the institution’s business units – including its water factory, bakery and guesthouse – had been fully revitalised, while its staff school reopened last month.

He said the polytechnic had also been designated as a hub for entrepreneurship development in the Southwest by Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), and as a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicle conversion centre -a project expected to commence before the convocation.

Highlighting other achievements, he said a chief lecturer led Nigeria to a gold medal victory at the 2023/2024 Global ICT Competition in Shenzhen, China, while a lecturer and a student from the Faculty of Engineering won the Best Engineer Awards in Ondo State.

Adegun hailed the cordial relationship between the polytechnic and its host community, Owo, and expressed appreciation to the Olowo of Owo and Chairman of the Ondo State Council of Obas, Oba (Dr.) Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, for his consistent support.

He said following Governor Aiyedatiwa’s approval to upgrade Rufus Giwa Polytechnic to a university, the management had begun necessary administrative processes to complement the government’s efforts.

The rector lauded the governing council, academic board, staff unions, and alumni for their cooperation, noting the alumni’s contributions – including solar-powered streetlights, a solar portal, and an ongoing alumni building project to be inaugurated during the convocation.

He expressed deep gratitude to Governor Aiyedatiwa for his “sustained retrieval efforts,” saying the convocation would not only celebrate the graduating students but also symbolise the rebirth of the polytechnic.

  • Aiyedatiwa breaks 12-year jinx of no convocation of Owo Poly

Aiyedatiwa breaks 12-year jinx of no convocation of Owo Poly

Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo is set to break the 12-year jinx of no-convocation in the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIP), Owo.

The Rector of the institution, Mr Olorunwa Adegun, disclosed this on Monday in a news conference heralding the 12th to 23rd combined convocation scheduled for Saturday at the RUGIP campus.

Adegun said that the last convocation was held in 2013, adding that when it was time for the the 12th edition, it was plagued by myriad of problems.

He noted that when he assumed office in 2023, the institution had dived into near ”bottomless pit of hopelessnes”.

”That is where the institution was lying almost lifeless when Mr Governor came on board, and when I assumed duty as acting rector,” he said.

According to him, workers in the institution were being owed 14 months of salaries without even the slightest ray of hope regarding how payment would be effected.

He added that the payment of salary to workers in the institution became a once in a while activity and the payment was based on varying percentage as low as five per cent.

”The institution was swimming in a pool of industrial crises. Expectedly, academic calendar became frequently disrupted.

”The institution’s Staff Schools was shut; workers there were sacked and pupils and students were dismissed.

”The institution’s business outfit, OSPO Ventures, was practically lifelesss and the institution was plagued with much litigation,” he said.

Adegun said that he had mapped out strategic moves to address the humiliating practice of payment of salaries through increase in the internally generating revenue.

He added that the state governor also took a decisive step to increase the institution’s monthly subvention substantially.

He said that the governor also made funds available through Special Intervention Fund (SIF) to the institution, bringing positive changes to the polytechnic.

According to him, normalcy has been restored to the polytechnic in meeting the expectations of all stakeholders.

”The institution is back as a leading polytechnic due to retrieval efforts of the state government coupled with his giant strides.
