    …His years in Ondo

Lucky Aiyedatiwa, in his inaugural speech yesterday as Ondo governor, acknowledged that the achievements of his boss, the late Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, would be difficult to surpass.

Akeredolu became governor in 2017 against the expectation of many after he defeated candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN).

Among the several achievements of Akeredolu, he would be remembered for the bold move to establish the Amotekun Corps.

The establishment of Amotekun was resisted by the Federal Government but Akeredolu pushed for it.

The coming of the Corps has reduced insecurity in the state as well as resolved cases of herders/farmers conflict.

Akeredolu also whittled down some powers and sphere of influence of some traditional rulers in the state following implementation of the Justica Ajama panel report.

Many Obas were upgraded to First Class monarchs. Among the traditional rulers elevated from grade B Monarch to grade A were Owa-Ale of Iyometa, Ikare, Akoko Northeast Local Government; Ajana of Afa Okeagbe, Akoko North West; Alale of Akungba, Akoko South West; Okiti of Iju, Ogbolu of Ita-ogbolu, Oloba of Oba-Ile, Alara of Ilara mokin, Olujare of Ijare, Olowa of Igbara-Oke.

Others were Oluoke of Okeigbo, Maporure of Agerige, Eletikan of Etikan, Ahaba of Ajagba, Odogbo of Omiland, Larogbo of Akotogbo, Orunja of Odigbo, Halu of Ode-Aye, Orungberuwa of Erinje, the Ojomo-Luda of Ijebu-Owo, Olupele of Ipele, Elemure of Emure-Ile, Olumoru of Imoru and Olute of Ute.

Upon assumption of office, Akeredolu met a state with an IGR of N500m. He assembled a team and the IGR was increased to about N3billion.

Akeredolu rejected his predecessor’s building of mega public schools. He paid the state counterpart funding for Universal Basic Education and renovated over 1,500 primary schools.

On road infrastructure, Akeredolu constructed the first fly over at the busy Ore-Lagos highway. The interchange reduced traffic congestion and accidents in the axis.

Across the state, Akeredolu was known to have constructed over 1000km of roads. The second fly over was being constructed at the Onyarubulem-Shagari/Irese along the Akure-Ibadan highway before his demise.

In his bid to enhance development at the grassroots, Akeredolu created 33 Local Council Development Area (LCDA). He signed the bill creating the LCDA into law before his demise.

To ensure adequate health care delivery system, Akeredolu canceled the free health care introduced by his predecessor and introduced the health insurance package tagged the Orange Health Insurance Scheme (ORANGHIS).

Akeredolu’s relationship with Organised Labour was cordial. He paid the seven months salary arrears inherited by his administration and was not owing workers.

Last month, he released N1billion for the payment of gratuity to teachers and local government workers who retired on 2011.

Some pensioners who retired in 2012 were also paid.

Former governor of Ondo state, Olusegun Mimiko, has said that his late successor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu was a patriot who did only what he believed in and was never shy of expressing his personal beliefs no matter how controversial.

Mimiko, who expressed sadness over the demise of Akeredolu, spoke in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Digital Communications, John Paul Akinduro.

He said: “From our days as unionists in the then University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Aketi was and remained a dogged fighter for causes he believed in and a jolly good personality. His departure will no doubt be felt by his wife, children, immediate associates and residents of our dear state.

“I enjoin all the people of our dear state to shed all toga of partisanship and sentiments to mourn the departed compatriot and join in praying for strength to the family to bear the loss.

The shape of things to come in Ondo State unveiled itself at the swearing-in ceremony of Lucky Aiyedatiwa as governor of the state.

The Cocoa Conference hall including premises of the Governor’s office was packed full with supporters of Aiyedatiwa and the All Progressives Congress.

Inside the hall where the inauguration took place was tensed. There was booing of loyalists of Akeredolu whenever their names were mentioned while applause rented the air when names of those that stood by Aiyedatiwa during the impeachment saga were introduced.

Loyalists of Akeredolu wore mournful mood but it was celebration time for supporters of Aiyedatiwa.

The situation at the inauguration of Aiyedatiwa was due to the political impasse that engulfed the state after the Ondo Assembly moved to impeach Aiyedatiwa.

Some analysts said it was a sign of a division within the ranks of the ruling APC and the internal war to come in the days ahead.

UPDATE: NGF chair, Makinde visit Akeredolu’s wife, family in Ibadan residence

The chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and his Oyo state counterpart, Seyi Makinde on Wednesday, December 27, paid a condolence visit to the Ibadan residence of late Ondo state governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

The duo arrived the Jericho residence of the late governor at about 5:30 pm.

Upon arrival, the two governors went straight into the private residence where the wife, Betty and some immediate family members were mourning.

The presence of journalist to cover the visit generated a negative reaction from some children of the deceased who ordered all the journalists to vacate the residence on the ground that it was a private residence and not government House.

Swift intervention of some colleagues calmed the frayed nerves as the reporters who had laid siege at the entrance gates of the residence to monitor situation felt angry at the negative reaction.

Apparently sensing what had happened, the two governors after the visit walked out to the street where the journalists were waiting to interview the visitors.

Speaking, the Kwara state governor lauded the deceased governor for his commitment and impact on humanity.

Abdulrahman who described the death as a great loss to the nation recounted that the late Aketi rose to the peak of his career and politics and impacted greatly on humanity in developmental politics

He impacted greatly on humanity in developmental politics. All we can say for now is that may his soul rest in peace.

“And we can also add that of the former Speaker, House of Representatives, Dr Ghali Naabba, may Allah forgive him his sins and give him aljannah firdus.”

Akeredolu: Seven things to know about prostate cancer

The Ondo state governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, died on Wednesday, December 27.

According to a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, the governor died in Germany on Wednesday after battling prostate cancer.

Here are 7 things to know about prostate cancer.

    1. Prostate cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cells in the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system below the bladder.

    2. Early prostate cancer causes no symptoms. Most cases are detected after screening tests – typically blood tests for levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) – indicate unusual growth of prostate tissue. Diagnosis requires a biopsy of the prostate. If cancer is present, the pathologist assigns a Gleason score, with a higher score representing a more dangerous tumor. Medical imaging is performed to look for cancer that has spread outside the prostate. Based on the Gleason score, PSA levels, and imaging results, a cancer case is assigned a stage 1 to 4. Higher stage signifies a more advanced, more dangerous disease.

    3. Most prostate tumors remain small and cause no health problems. These are managed with active surveillance, monitoring the tumor with regular tests to ensure it has not grown.  Tumors more likely to be dangerous can be destroyed with radiation therapy or surgically removed by radical prostatectomy. Those whose cancer spreads beyond the prostate are treated with hormone therapy that reduces levels of the androgens (male sex hormones) that prostate cells need to survive. Eventually cancer cells grow resistant to this treatment.

This most-advanced stage of the disease, called castration-resistant prostate cancer, is treated with continued hormone therapy alongside the chemotherapy drug docetaxel. Some tumors spread to other areas of the body, particularly the bones and lymph nodes. There, tumors cause severe bone pain, leg weakness or paralysis, and eventually death.

    4. Signs and symptoms Early prostate cancer usually causes no symptoms. As a tumor grows beyond the prostate, it can damage nearby organs causing erectile dysfunction, blood in the urine or semen, or trouble urinating – often frequent urination and slow or weak urine stream. More than half of men over age 50 experience some form of urination problem, typically due to issues other than prostate cancer such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate).

    5. Advanced prostate tumors often metastasize to nearby bones of the pelvis and back; there they can cause fatigue, unexplained weight loss, and back or bone pain that does not improve with rest. Metastases can damage the bones around them, and around a quarter of those with metastatic prostate cancer develop a bone fracture. Growing metastases can also compress the spinal cord causing weakness in the legs and feet, or limb paralysis.

    6.  Prostate cancer screening: Most cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed through screening tests, when tumors are too small to cause any symptoms. This is done through blood tests to measure levels of the protein prostate-specific antigen (PSA), which are elevated in those with enlarged prostates, whether due to prostate cancer or benign prostatic hyperplasia.

The average man’s blood has around 1 nanogram (ng) of PSA per milliliter (mL) of blood tested. Those with PSA levels below average are very unlikely to develop dangerous prostate cancer over the next 8 to 10 years.

Men with PSA levels above 4 ng/mL are at increased risk – around 1 in 4 will develop prostate cancer – and are often referred for a prostate biopsy. PSA levels over 10 ng/mL indicate higher risk still; over half of men in this group develop prostate cancer. Men with high PSA levels are often recommended to repeat the blood test four to six weeks later, as PSA levels can fluctuate unrelated to prostate cancer.

    7. Diagnosis: Men suspected of having prostate cancer may undergo several tests to help assess the prostate. One common procedure is the digital rectal examination, in which a doctor inserts a lubricated finger into the rectum to feel the nearby prostate.

Tumors feel like stiff, irregularly shaped lumps against the rest of the prostate. Hardening of the prostate can also be due to benign prostatic hyperplasia; around 20–25% of those with abnormal findings on their rectal exams have prostate cancer.

Pan Yoruba Socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere said the former governor of Ondo state, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, would be missed for his courageous standpoint on issues of the structure of Nigeria.

It said that Akeredolu as president of the Nigerian Bar Association was a veritable voice of courage in championing equity and fairness in the governance of the Nigerian Federation.

A statement by its Secretary General, Chief Sola Ebiseni, said Akeredolu observed and attributed growing sectional activism to “faulty and twisted federalism”.

The Chairman of the Ondo APC, Engr Ade Adetimehin, said Akeredolu was committed, without reservation, to the security and development of Ondo State.

“He was ready to secure the state, even at the expense of his own political career. The sincerity of Arakurin to the transformation of the State is apparent in the three senatorial districts of Ondo State.

The lawmaker representing Akoko Southwest/Akoko SouthEast, Adegboyega Adefarati, said the death of Akeredolu was a piercing pain.

“He was a man of many parts, affable, generous, religious, courageous, bold and brave. Reasonably, Aketi was a fearless and faithful leader who took important and impactful decisions without minding whose ox is gored. Any day and anytime, he was committed to his words to the end of his life. While battling for survival, he still spoke truth to power and authority.”

The immediate past Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon Donald Ojogo, said Akeredolu betrayed the truth about self at all times and pursued his convictions with passion.

“He was a General of the People and for the People at most unexpected moments who dared most dreadful paths even in the face of seemingly dire consequences, because in his words, nothing will happen. And indeed nothing, and only death, could have happened to AKETI.

“So, when death knocks, defies human resistance and defiles resilience, it is always a rude intrusion that strikes a blow in the most obliterating manner. This, undoubtedly, is a strike of thorny strokes.”
