“We must all therefore glorify God, for his life was very well lived,” he said.

    ‘We lost a fearless patriot’

Former Member Representing Ileoluji/Oke-Igbo/Odigbo Federal Constituency of Ondo State, Mayowa Akinfolarin, said: “The demise of Arakunrin Akeredolu is undoubtedly a huge loss to us in Ondo State and Nigeria at large.

“We have truly lost a beacon of forthrightness, fearlessness and courage with the passage of our iconic Aketi. He was a ‘talk and do’ governor, whose words could be taken to the bank.

“In as much as I am very saddened by the untimely death of this political colossus, his great achievements will continue to immortalise him in our collective memories.

“Aketi dared the highest authority and braved all odds; even at the risk of his re-election.”

     Ngige: huge personal loss

Former Governor of Anambra State and two-time Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, described Akeredolu’s demise as a huge personal loss to him and the progressive camp.

Dr. Ngige said Nigeria lost of one of the voices that spoke truth to power.

In a statement by his media office in Abuja, he said Akeredolu transmuted from being his personal lawyer to a family friend.

Ngige said: “Being a medical doctor of 44 years standing, the prognosis of Aketi’s illness was clear to me but being human, and as a friend, I kept hoping and praying that he would overcome and at least, cross over to the septuagenarian club.

“As a strong willed person, he tried not to succumb to the illness, but painfully, death, the thief in the night struck.”

Paying glowing tribute to the deceased, he said Akeredolu was  a man of strong character, dependable ally, thoroughbred politician and model statesman.

According to him, Aketi was principled, tough, bold, courageous, fearless and outspoken, as well as unrelenting in his struggle for the entrenchment of true democracy, good governance and the rule of law in Nigeria.

Oyetibo said: “The demise of Arakunrin Akeredolu…is, undoubtedly, a great loss to the legal profession, Ondo State, and Nigeria, in general.

“As a former Attorney-General of Ondo, he made his mark as the Chief Law Officer of the State.

“As former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, he initiated programmes which sought to promote the interests of the Bar.

“Mr Akeredolu was a strong-willed man who spoke what he meant and meant what he said in every respect.

“At a very critical period when tough decisions needed to be taken in the interest of peace and security of Ondo State, he was not found in the company of timid and timorous souls. Rather, he stood firmly for the promotion of the internal security of the state.

“At a time like this, one must accept the undeniable truism that it is God that giveth life and it is He that taketh it, and when the time for a man to die has come, it is purposeless to resist it. May his soul find rest in the bosom of the Lord.

“As the former acting Governor has taken his oath of office as Governor of the state, I urge him to put behind him the recent political dissents in the state and forge ahead to implement policies that will unite every segment of the state.”

    PANDEF mourns

The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) expressed pain over Akeredolu.

A statement  by its National Chairman, Senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien, the organisation recalled the late governor’s commitment to rotating the presidency and tackling insecurity in the Southwest  with the creation of Amotekun, the region’s security outfit.

The statement said: “PANDEF and, indeed, the entire Nigerian people will eternally remember his forthright views on issues of constitutional law and national importance, particularly while he held sway as President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

“His critical thoughts on daily affairs and constitutionalism contributed in major ways to consolidating our democracy and peaceful co-existence as a people.

“It is also an ineffaceable fact that under his watch as governor, Ondo State became a centre point of economic and social development.”

    Yoruba leaders sad

Yoruba Leaders of Thought (YLF) described Akeredolu’s death as a great loss to the country and the Yoruba people.

In a statement by the National Secretary, Bayo Aina, the group, led by Alhaji Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi, said: “Akeredolu worked for the protection of his people as governor. He did not only excel in his vocation as a legal practitioner, he also made a great impact in his public life as a former Attorney General and  Commissioner for Justice, NBA President and governor of Ondo State.”

YLF attributed the prevailing peace in the Southwest to Akeredolu’s doggedness and fight against invasion by criminals and enemies of the region through the establishment of Amotekun.

The group said it is to his credit that he spoke against any perceived injustice, adding that he played a great role in the power shift from the North to the South.

Yari  salutes  ‘fearless advocate for democracy’

Former Zamfara State Governor and Senator representing Zamfara West Senatorial District, Abdulaziz Yari, described Akeredolu as a fearless advocate for democracy, equity and fairness .

He said in  a statement: “The late Akeredolu was widely known for his unrelenting forthrightness, fearless advocacy for democracy, equity and fairness and as a courageous crusader for social justice and human rights.”

Akeredolu’s death, monumental loss, says George

Ex-PDP Deputy National Chairman, Chief Olabode George, said Akeredolu’s demise was a monumental loss, and a big lesson  that those in position of authority must always strive to  defend the interests of Nigerians.

George, who recalled the role played by Akeredolu in the formation of Amotekun, said he stood out when lives and property were threatened by invaders.

George, the Atona Oodua of Yorubaland, was military governor of old Ondo State (Ondo and Ekiti) from 1987 to 1990.

Expressing his condolences, he said: “Akeredolu, who I always referred to as ‘My Aburo’,  made a great difference in the lives of his people and the nation through a combination of purposeful leadership and commitment to excellent service delivery.

“It is really unfortunate and sad that we are referring to this legal giant, great scholar, politician  and administrator par excellence in past tense.

“In the build up to the 2023 presidential election, he stood out as a bold politician by insisting that power must return to the South after eight years of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

“Akeredolu stood his ground by insisting that the right thing must be done.

“When a first class traditional ruler in Ondo State, Oba Israel Adeusi, was killed and when  some blood-thirsty maniacs invaded St Francis Catholic Church, Owo and killed worshippers, Akeredolu showed courage by insisting that those responsible must be brought to justice. He shed tears, spoke and Abuja listened to him.

“When he was indisposed, it was really unfortunate the needless controversy that emerged  over the transfer of power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa,  who is now the governor.

“Such was not necessary at all because the 1999 Constitution, as Amended, is very clear on a matter like this. The argument and power play were absolutely unnecessary.

“The lesson in this is that leaders must always think of the collective interest of all. Nobody will leave this world alive. We will all die one day. Any struggle for power that is outside the spirit of the Constitution should not be allowed.

“What are we struggling for? Position, power, money, fame, influence? All these are transient. Nothing lasts forever apart from the power of God.

“The big lesson  is that we should fear God, respect fellow human beings and do the right thing for this country to assume its rightful place in the comity of nations.

“Akeredolu’s death has robbed Nigeria of a statesman who was  totally committed to the development of Ondo State, Yorubaland and  Nigeria. He used his legal and political platform to advocate for the entrenchment of democracy and  good governance.

“Akeredolu is gone. Everybody will go one day. As a leader,  what will Nigerians say about you when you are gone? The lesson of his death is that we must all sacrifice to ensure the greatness of this country.”

It said late Akeredolu’s contribution to the legal profession was too remarkable to mention saying he was an active voice of the masses and a crusader of human rights who used the instrumentality of the law to fight injustice and entrench fairness, equity, and the rule of law.

According to a statement by its chairman, Olagundoye Anthony: “As a governor of Ondo state, he stood tall in the comity of Governors in Nigeria and fearlessly spoke truth to power. He singlehandedly led the struggle of local policing in the State at the risk of his second term ticket and midwived the birth of Amotekun Security Network which has now brought relative peace and tranquillity in the Southwest region

“We cannot but reminisce on his doggedness, resoluteness, and strong passion for achieving our nascent democracy and true federalism. We are however consoled by the fact that death as it is inevitable, is a debt we must all pay in this sinful world. Aketi has played his part.”

The Aareonakakanfo of Yoruba land, Iba Gani Adams has described the death of the Ondo state governor, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu as a huge loss to Nigeria and Yorubaland in particular.

Iba Gani Adams, in a statement made available to the media by his special assistant on media, Kehinde Aderemi, said he received the news of governor Akeredolu’s death as a rude shock, saying a dark cloud enveloped Ondo state and the southwest in general.

The Yoruba generalissimo stated further that the late governor fought a good battle with a sickness that had taken a huge toll on his health for a very long time now.

He said: “I received the news of governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s death with shock. It came at a time when we all hope for his return from Germany, where he had since been receiving treatment for the sickness that had taken him away from the public for a very long time now.

“The late Arakunrin Akeredolu was my governor. He was the governor of Ondo state and the loss was also very personal to me, first as a native of the state and second as the Aareonakakanfo of Yoruba land.

“The late governor Akeredolu was a voice that remained louder even as he battled his protracted sickness. • Tinubu: Akeredolu, a fearless humanist

    Tinubu: Akeredolu, a fearless humanist

President Tinubu led other political leaders and eminent Nigerians in paying tribute to the deceased governor.

The president said: “It is a difficult task to have to pen a tribute and sing a dirge for a departing soul. It is a more difficult job in our African culture when one is compelled to do so for a younger person. Here am I having the difficult job of singing a dirge for Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, my beloved brother, confidant, political soulmate, and the Executive Governor of Ondo State.

“It is an impossible task to fully capture in words Rotimi’s towering figure and his human essence. Rotimi was a man who moved our nation towards equity, fairness and justice in his strident advocacy against every form of injustice in our country through the instrumentality of the law as a senior advocate, attorney-general of his beloved state, as President of the Nigerian Bar Association and Governor of Ondo State.

“In a challenging moment of our statehood when marauding agents of darkness spread their tentacles across our country, Rotimi was a strong voice in wilderness calling us to rethink our security architecture so we can have a more secure nation. His unrelenting advocacy led to the birth of the local police in the Southwest.

“Rotimi was a man of ideas and action. While he was with us, he taught us the power of action and service. In Ondo State, where he had the honour to serve as the governor over the past six years, he served his people with absolute loyalty, dedication, and forthrightness.

“His footprints dot the entire landscape of the state through the hundreds of kilometres of roads he built, the many schools he built, and healthcare facilities that he provided.

“During the dark hours when marauding agents of darkness visited the state and killed defenceless citizens where 40 worshippers of the Catholic Church of Owo were killed on June 5, 2022, Rotimi’s leadership qualities as a true statesman and compassionate leader radiated  brightly to the world. He was a mourner-in-chief, who guided his people through an agonising period. Today, I mourn a fighter and fearless defender of truth and the masses.

“My personal journey with Rotimi started as joint members of the progressive family. We fought many battles together to restore progressive governance in the Southwest, Edo State, and Nigeria as a whole. During this uncertain period, Rotimi was resolute and unflinching. He showed uncommon courage as a member of our legal team in our battles to reclaim our stolen mandates in Ekiti, Ondo, Edo, and Osun States. A gallant lawyer and one of the finest of the legal profession.

“Rotimi has played his role well and left us untimely. We will never see his likes again. Let me tell the people of Ondo State that I am grieving with you. We will honour Rotimi’s memory and make sure his legacy of service is never forgotten.

He added that Akeredolu’s death was a painful loss to the Southwest Governors’ Forum and the Southern Governors’ Forum both of which he chaired and used as platforms to enrich governance and the standard of living of citizens.

Uzodimma, who doubles as the Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF) Chairman, lamented that the death of the former NBA President has left a void that transcends state borders.

Describing Akeredolu as “a distinguished leader and an in-law to behold,” Uzodimma noted that the deceased’s astuteness in public service and commitment to public opinion helped to shape matters of national interest.

Abiodun described Akeredolu as a dogged fighter throughout his lifetime.

He said: “Akeredolu made an indelible mark on Nigerian politics. From his tenure as the chairman of the NBA to his role as the chairman of the Southwest Governors Forum, he continuously championed the cause of justice and the upliftment of his people.”

Makinde, who expressed sadness over the death, said: “I have lost a worthy co-fighter for the South-West cause because we were both at the vanguard of the struggle, which birthed the South-West Security Network Agency codenamed Amotekun.

“Aketi’s fervent and unrelenting stance on issues that border on Southwest’s regional integration and progress is a lesson for leaders. He will be sorely missed.”

  • Akeredolu: from the Bar to political podium

Akeredolu: from the Bar to political podium

It is the end of an era in Ondo State. Southwest is united in sorrow. The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) is in sober reflection; its rank is depleted. Above all, the Akeredolu family in Owo is hit by a blow of fate.

Yesterday, Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu (SAN), lawyer-son of a Christian priest, former President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) and governor of the Sunshine State, bade farewell after a long and protracted battle. He never revovered from the precarious ill-health, which had diverted his attention from governance for months.

He was the first Ondo governor to die in office, trailing the likes of Patrick Yakowa (Kaduna) and Danbaba Suntai (Taraba) who died in helicopter crashes, Senator Mamman Ali (Yobe) who died after illness and Sheu Kangiwa (Sokoto), who died in the course of polo game.

Akeredolu led a life of battles from childhood. After losing his cleric-father at a tender age, he embraced the reality of hard times and faced the vicissitudes of life with courage, a virtue that henceforth shaped his steps, career as a legal officer, politician, and administrator.

He was never given to frivolities. He had no room for prevarication. Ever forthright, he was opposed to any embellishment. Never diplomatic, he spoke the truth to power; unpretentious, outspoken, bold, brave, principled, strong willed, audacious and permanently fearless. He was a vocal advocate of justice who built a solid wall of restriction against oppression.

Either as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, NBA president, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), and later All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, governor, Chairman of Southwest Governors’ Forum, or Chairman of Southern Nigerian Governors’ Forum, he exhibited sterling qualities in times of ‘peace and war.’

Fondly called by his prefix, Arakunrin, and Aketi, his nickname, by his admirers, Akeredolu bestrode the political and governance space, the same way he was a colossus at the bar. He was not a politician without a second address. An outstanding lawyer, he was a Managing Partner at the law firm of Olujinmi and Akeredolu, which he co-founded with Chief Akin Olujinmi, a former Attorney General and Minister for Justice .

Akeredolu was born on July 21, 1956 in Owo to Reverend Ola Akeredolu and Lady Evangelist Grace Akeredolu of Aderoyiju family of Igbotu, Ese Odo, in Ondo State.  He started his primary education at Government Primary School in Owo. He proceeded to Aquinas College in Akure, Loyola College in Ibadan and Comprehensive High School, Ayetoro, for his secondary school education and Higher School Certificate.

Akeredolu attended the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) to study Law, graduating in 1977. He was at the Nigerian Law School in 1978.

He was appointed Attorney-General of Ondo State from 1997 to 1999. In 1998, he became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. He was Chairman of the Legal Aid Council (2005–2006). In November 2009, he faced allegations of corruption when the Bar Association’s third Vice-President, Welfare Secretary and Assistant Financial Secretary circulated a petition entitled: “Complaints against your fraudulent manifestations, violation of the NBA.” However, the allegations against him were reviewed and dropped by the National Executive Council of the NBA.

As an activist lawyer, he advocated for the rule of law, due process and sanctity of the ballot box.

He also called for vote or mandate protection.  In a lecture in December 2009, Akeredolu said no amount of electoral reform or judicial system could give Nigeria free and fair elections if Nigerians themselves refused to take practical steps to ensure that their votes count.

During the period of grave national emergency when President Umaru Yar’Adua was indisposed for a long time, Akeredolu said he ought to have handed over to Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan in an acting capacity. The position was backed by the NBA, which said he was authorised to speak on its behalf. The position gave an impetus to the invocation of the doctrine of necessity.

A Life Bencher, Akeredolu was Member of Council, Int’l Bar Association, 2008-2010; Member of Council, Pan-African Lawyers Union, 2008-2010; Chairman, Legal Aid Council (2005-2006); Member, Council of Legal Education (1997-1999); Vice Chairman, NBA, Ibadan Branch (1992-1994), National Publicity Secretary, NBA (1988-1989), member, National Executive Council, NBA.

In 2012, the NBA named its new secretariat in Abuja after him, with its president citing the reason being the need for “generational identification and recognition of those who had contributed immensely to the development of the association.

On February 4, 2022, he made Grand Patron of the NDLEA by the Chairman of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig-Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa.

In October 2022, the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) was conferred on Akeredolu by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Politics has always been in his blood from his campus days. A Student Union leader, he promoted robust debates and mobilised against inequality, injustice, corruption, arbitrariness and recklessness.

His disposition cast him in the mould of a progressive. In fact, Akeredolu was actively involved in the battle for the liberation of the Southwest from the conservative Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) forces. He was counsel to ACN governorship candidates whose mandates were stolen.

However, in November 2011, Akeredolu joined the fray. He was among the crowd of ACN governorship aspirants. Indisputably, he was the best. He flaunted his credentials as a respected president of the Bar and an experieced technocrat who understood the problems of Ondo State. His manifesto was captivating- agricultural development, fish farming for export, free education and healthcare, 30,000 jobs for youths in the first 100 days, roads, increased subsidies and greater local control over public spending.

On July 28, 2012, Akeredolu was selected as ACN governorship candidate at a congress in Akure. But, he was defeated by Governor Olusegun Mimiko of the Labour Party (LP).

Akeredolu never abdicated. Although he wanted to be National Legal Adviser of the party, he had to drop the bid as Dr. Muiz Banire (SAN) was favoured for the position. But, he started nurturing his political structure ahead of 2016. His Aketi Movement became unstoppable.

On September 3, 2016, Akeredolu defeated Dr. Segun Abraham and Olusola Oke (SAN) at the primary on the platform of the APC. On Sunday, 27 November 2016, he was declared winner of the keenly contested governorship poll. He defeated Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) of PDP.

During the first term, crisis erupted between him and his deputy, Agbola Ajayi. Thus, when he ran for a second term, he chose Lucky Aiyedatiwa as running mate. Akeredolu was re-elected in 2020, defeating Jegede  for the second time. He won in 15 of 18 local governments.

After securing a second term, he started drumming support for governorship zoning to Ondo South. That is why the district has the highest number of governorship aspirants, including Finance Commissioner Wale Akinterinwa, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, Oke, and Aiyedatiwa.

As governor, Akeredolu was a dogged fighter. He was the motivator of the initiative that led to the establishment of the security outfit, Amotekun,  which has reduced insecurity in the Southwest.

Akeredolu objected to the invasion of reckless herders and he demanded for state police, devolution of power and restructuring  to strengthen the capacity of states and governors as chief security officers. After the Owo massacre, he became more vociferous, decrying the over centralisation of the security architecture.

On a number of occasions, he was an ardent critic of the Buhari administration.

Akeredolu, who was Chairman of Southern Nigerian Governors’ Forum, mobilised his colleagues across parties to canvass presidential zoning to the South.

During the 2023 engineering, Akeredolu was a staunch supporter of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for president at the primary and general election.

However, in the last one year, Akeredolu’s health had deteriorated. He was flown abroad for treatment for medical condition in June.

He transmitted power to his deputy, Aiyedatiwa, in accordance with 1999 Constitution. He returned to Nigeria from Germany in September. He stayed in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

As controversy brew over his protracted ill-health and the state was enveloped in crisis, President Tinubu intervened twice to resolve the conflict.

Akeredolu will be remembered as a colourful politician; he was principled, honest and straightforward.

He was a believer in national unity in diversity.
