  • Akume: keep faith with Buhari

Senator George Akume (Benue North-West) has called on the people to keep faith with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Akume, in a Democracy Day message by his media aide, Torhile Uchi, said the APC-led Federal Government is on track in fixing the economy and return the country to the path of greatness.

He urged his constituents to celebrate democracy despite the challenges of nationhood as there is no alternative to democracy.

The former governor also advised APC supporters not to be deceived by opposition elements as the party will win all the elections in 2019.

  • Re: Akume and Suswam must do restitution

SIR: Reading through the “Letter to the Editor” with the above title, in The Nation of Friday, February 23, one could imagine that the writer, Sunday Adole Jonah, supposedly an academic, shares the concern of all well-meaning people who are worried that Benue State University, Makurdi was forced to suspend, on Friday, February 16, second semester examinations of the 2016/2017 Academic session.

However, if he were well abreast with issues surrounding the “examinations impasse”, he would have been more circumspect in making the innuendo and blanket indictment of former governors George Akume and Gabriel Suswam as well as incumbent Governor Samuel Ortom the way he did.

For Benue State University, the duo of Akume and Suswam, during their tenure as visitor, gave the institution the needed support just like incumbent Governor Samuel Ortom is also doing.

While former Governor Akume, for instance, started the university’s college of health sciences, his successor, Suswam, completed the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) which enabled students of the college to advance to their clinical classes. The incumbent governor, Ortom, since becoming governor in 2015, has ensured that accreditation issues of the medical college are treated with despatch and this has resulted to the graduation of over 150 medical doctors from the college, since then.

It may interest Adole to know that the issues which resulted to the current closure of the university have been largely caused by the students themselves, either out of ignorance or wilful refusal to conform to university regulations.

On discovering that some students of the university have been undergoing their studies without proper registration of their courses, the present management of the institution, led by Professor Msugh Moses Kembe, on assumption of office in November 2015, resolved to change the old way of doing things. The idea is to enforce compulsory registration of courses, especially now that the exercise does not end with filling of hard copies of registration forms but also digital registration to ease marking and processing of examinations.

So, to simplify the matter, Benue State University has about 25, 282 undergraduate students. At the moment, 13,082 of these students are fully registered and have paid all their student charges while 6562 of these have paid their student charges but are not registered. Only 5638 students have neither paid their student charges nor registered.

It is pertinent to bring it to the knowledge of all that at the parents/ stakeholders’ forum convened by the university management on Wednesday, February 21, the forum endorsed the suspension of the examinations until March 5. It was further agreed that students who have not paid their sundry charges and those who have paid but have not registered should use this period to complete their registration. For students who may not be able to meet the financial responsibilities within this period, their parents/guardians could come forward and submit an undertaking for such wards to write the examinations.

  • Akume and Suswam must do restitution

Akume and Suswam must do restitution

Sir: The news that some 7,000 students were unable to pay their school fees over at the Benue State University (BSU) Makurdi was depressing, very depressing indeed. As a result of the angst resulting from this state of affair, this university is shut till further notice. What is plaguing the BSU is a small-scale manifestation of what plagues the larger Benue society where the office of the governor has been a cheap getaway to the billionaires’ club.

George Akume was someone who spent Benue State money with careless abandon. Gabriel Suswam was addicted to a cult of personality. When I first mooted the idea of a cattle ranch homestead plan to the Benue State government that would be under the auspices of an appropriately-named National Ranch Homestead Commission (NRHC) circa 2012/2013, the idea was such a great one that the federal government committed a hefty chunk of money into the process of ensuring that the Fulanis are settled for good in ranches. How Governor Suswam managed that fund is still a mystery to me. It sickens me to think that Suswam is a smug billionaire today whilst his hometown folks in Logo are being mowed down by the Fulanis that some say a N100 billion was appropriated for to settle them in ranches in the vast open landmasses of Northern Nigeria.

Now, Benue State parents cannot pay their charges school fees because the culture of impunity that involves non-payment of salaries began with Suswam. Since former governors Akume and Suswam are ex-public servant billionaires, it should be on their consciences to do restitution and pay the school fees of those students who are hard-pressed for money at the moment over at the BSU Makurdi. Governor Samuel Ortom must pay the emoluments of civil servants and quit entertaining the thought that a cheap route to a crooked billionaire’s club is a cool thing. Benue State has endured too much tribulation as it is and this is a state that lends itself to ease of governance with so much pliable flexibility. I wonder why the governors cannot get it right.

  • Akume commiserates with Muktar’s family

Leader of the All Progressives Congress in Northcentral, Senator George Akume, yesterday led some politicians stakeholders in the north to commiserate with the family of former military governor of Kaduna State, AVM Muktar Muhammed. Muhammed died in a London hospital after a protracted illness and was buried yesterday.

Consoling the bereaved’s family, Akume said death remained a natural calamity that could befall all humans at anytime. He regretted that most of them could not attend the burial which held yesterday due to urgent national engagements but promised to stand with the family at this challenging moment and always.

The Benue North West Senator noted that the late AVM Muktar had lived a worthy life having impacted so many lives while alive and prayed the Almighty Allah to grant his family the fortitude to bear the painful loss.

He tasked the family to immortalise their father by living for truth and manifesting the core qualities of discipline, hardwork, and love for one another, which their father lived for.

The former Benue State Governor thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for sympathising with the family at this time of grief and called on all Nigerians to support the president so as to bring about the desired change.

In her address, wife of the deceased, Hajiya Rabi Muktar, thanked Senator Akume and the delegation for the condolence visit, saying they were consoled by the love Nigerians have shown the family throughout the sickness and death of her husband.

The late AVM Muktar, one time Minister of Housing Development and erstwhile member of the Supreme Military Council, was, until his death, a Chieftain of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Chairman, Board of Directors,

  • I have no interest in Benue funds – Akume

Former Benue State governor and Senator  Sen. George Akume, has stated that he has no interest in amassing personal wealth to compete with world class billionaires like Alhaji Aliko Dangote even when he served as governor of Benue State for eight years.

Akume stated this yesterday when he received coordinators of the Ortom /Abounu Campaign Organisation, now Akume Ambassadors, in the 23 local government areas in Benue State. The former chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum stated that he had several opportunities to amass personal wealth and own oil wells in the country, especially during the tenure elongation saga of former President Olusegun Obasanjo but chose to stand by the people and wondered why he should now deviate from this path of selfless service after making so many sacrifice for the sustenance of the nations democracy.

He urged members of the Akume Ambassadors, most of who occupy key offices in the present administration, to give their total loyalty and commitment to the success of the Ortom-led administration in their various offices adding that all well meaning supporters of the All Progressives Congress must put their hands on deck to ensure the success of Governor Samuel Ortom whose failure means that of all members of the party in the state.

Earlier, leader of the delegation, Dr. D.D Tamen, stated that the forum was in Akume’s house to appreciate him for his firm support for Governor Samuel Ortom which did not only ensure his emergence as governor but has helped the government achieve major feats even in the face of numerous financial challenges and called for its sustenance for the governor’s re-election in 2019.

The group also appreciated the senator for facilitating the appointment and employment of many of their members.

  • I’ve no reason to work against Ortom, says Akume

I’ve no reason to work against Ortom, says Akume

The senator representing Benue North West, George Akume, has said his support for Governor Samuel Ortom is strong.

He added that he has no reason to work against him.

Akume, North Central leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) spoke when Gwer women, under the auspices of “Ortom/Akume Mothers 2019”, visited him in Makurdi.

He noted that the election of Ortom as governor was divine, despite obstacles allegedly put on his way by former Governor Gabriel Suswam.

Akume dispelled rumour of a clash of interest between him and the governor, describing such speculation as the handiwork of wicked elements, who plundered the state’s resources.

Said he: “Now that these elements have been sent packing, they are praying for disunity among stakeholders of the present government so they can leverage on that to wrest power. But God will prevent their plans from materialising.”

The senator, who said Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) need the forgiveness of Nigerians and not their votes, challenged his critics to bring their records to the table.

He urged the women to support Ortom for re-election and his senatorial ambition, as he is not tired of representing them at the  National Assembly.

The former Minority leader praised the Masev clan, with its personalities, right from the days of the late Lushakyaa Anja, Ayua Num, Aernyi Kungur, Dr. Joshua Adagba and present political leaders, who are focused and reliable.

He enjoined the women to apply decorum in politicking by embracing other groups with same ideology.

Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Michael Gusa thanked the APC leader for his fatherly disposition towards faithful,  saying Benue would tap from his wisdom and kind heartedness.

Akume drums up support for Ortom

Senator George Akume (Benue North West) has called on the people to continue to pray and support Governor Samuel Ortom to succeed.

Senator Akume spoke at the weekend at the burial of Mama Sarah Dzeramo, mother of Baver Dzeramo, former lawmaker representing Tarka, who is also deceased.

He praised Ortom for keeping faith with the people through judicious use of scare resources, and transparency in governance.

Ortom described the deceased as a courageous woman, who raised her children in the fear of the Lord.

Ortom promised the people that the Wannune Tomato Processing Company will begin production before end of the year.

He noted that the massive turn out at the burial was a testimony that the late son of the deceased was a man of the people.

  • ‘Shut Benue hotel not owned by Akume’

The HAF Hotel shut by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) last week for tax default was not owned by Senator George Akume, his aide said yesterday.

FIRS, in a statement last week, attributed the ownership of the hotel to the former Benue State governor.

But a statement yesterday by Mrs Becky Orpin, special adviser to Senator Akume, said: “We wish to make it clear that HAF Haven Hotel is not owned by Senator Akume but by Hope Alive Foundation (HAF), an independent action-oriented Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO). It was incorporated in 2002 with a board of directors.

“Senator Akume, given his humanitarian disposition to the disadvantaged, only identifies with the ideals for which HAF was incorporated.

“Hope Alive Foundation is a charitable non-profit foundation that takes care of widows, orphans and the physically-challenged in Benue State. It feeds and provides homes and workable skills to the underprivileged, and awards scholarships to indigent students.

“Unlike most foundations that rely on donations, HAF funds its humanitarian activities through revenue generated from such ventures as HAF Haven Hotel. Therefore, the hotel is definitively not the property of Senator Akume but of HAF.

“Apart from taking care of the underserved in Benue, HAF Haven Hotel is a law abiding corporate body that diligently adheres to tax regulations. We have not defaulted on payments as we have always endeavoured to make minimum payments.

“For instance, between 2011 to 2014, HAF Haven Hotel has paid a cumulative N1.1 million in taxes and N745,000, full payment, for the year 2014/15.

“Currently, HAF Haven Hotel has a minor dispute with FIRS over tax assessments carried out on the hotel. Our auditors detected duplications in the assessments and the tax comptroller in Makurdi was alerted.

“Unfortunately, the issues raised were yet to be resolved when the FIRS team from the headquarters  swooped in and summarily closed down the hotel, without listening to HAF’s petition.

“However, the hotel will work with FIRS to resolve this issue professionally. We believe that reason will prevail and the hotel will be reopened.

    •Donates 500 tricycles

Senate Minority Leader in the Seventh National Assembly, Senator George Akume of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has said he regretted ensuring that Gabriel Suswam became Benue State governor.

Akume served as the governor between 1999 and 2007 on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He was succeeded by Suswam (PDP), who till 2007 represented Ukum, Katsina-Ala and Logo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Speaking at the weekend at the distribution of tricycles to Benue Northwest people, Senator Akume said he coerced and insisted that Suswam be made governor, as it was against the wishes of the people.

He said his insistence that Suswam be made governor was to bring development to the poverty-stricken state, “but I regret because I had no premonition that my successor would embezzle the state’s fund.”

Akume said Benue, a richly agricultural state, is broke because of the alleged corrupt practices of the Suswam administration.

    Akume lashes at Suswam

Senator George Akume, representing Benue Northwest, has accused ex-Governor Gabriel Suswam of compromising on security.

This, he said led to the death of many, especially in Guma Local Government, during the Fulani invasion.

Akume spoke at the weekend in Gbajumba, headquarters of Guma Local Government when Governor Samuel Ortom held a Christmas party for his kinsmen.

The senator said while the herdsmen invaded and killed people, especially in Guma, Suswam paid less attention.

Akume visited the victims and donated materials for their upkeep.

According to the former Senate Minority leader, he awarded a road contract leading to Gbajumba, but when he left office,  Suswam terminated the contract.

Ortom said his administration would eliminate poverty, ignorance and disease.
