  • No rift between Akume and I, says Alia

No rift between Akume and I, says Alia

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia yesterday described the Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF) Senator George Akume as a national pride.

He personally welcomed Akume, a former governor, to Benue State, for his 70th birthday, saying that he is the father of Benue.

The governor also dispelled rumours of a rift between him and the SGF.

He said: “I want to unambiguously debunk the circulating rumours of discord between the SGF and myself. These speculations exist solely in the imaginative realm of opportunists, instigators of turmoil, and merchants of mischief who thrive on chaos. The said fracas is only a figment of the imagination crafted by those who seek to profit from crisis.

“For pockets of disenchanted members of our party here in the state, we are already in talks to address various areas of discontent. However, while we try to do so, we shall ensure that the will of the masses who voted us into office, prevails. This is because we are determined not to distort the organic relationship between the people and our government.

“I therefore  enjoin each and every one of us to dismiss such baseless notions and focus on the shared commitment to truth, unity, and progress that defines our collective journey.”

At a symposium in Makurdi, the state capital, to mark the birthday, the governor described the SGF as a political colossus, a democratic patriarch, and a man whom upon the birthing of the Fourth Republic in Nigeria, laid the foundation for successive leadership in Benue.

He said: “We are gathered here today not merely to acknowledge the passage of time, but to celebrate a leader—the state pillar of our great party; a man who has over the years, risen steadily from being a political creation to a creator in our political landscape.”

Represented by his deputy, Dr. Sam Ode, the governor said Akume’s birthday has become a platform for discussing good governance and national cohesion.

He said Akume’s birthday should always be marked in the State with a colloquium.

Alia thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for giving Akure a unique opportunity to offer diligent service to the country.

He also thank the President for apointing other notable indigenes of the state into leadership positions to contribute their quota to national development.

He said it  is a clear demonstration that Benue is seriously being considered in the scheme of things.

Alia commended Akume for ensuring that since the inception of the Fourth Republic, he has not only developed a whole generation of leaders, but also allowed them to develop ideas.

He described the former governor as a tolerant leader who is ever ready to bow to superior argument.

Alia added: “While some may regard that as foolishness or a weakness, I personally regard it as the greatest virtue of a true democrat who is open-minded and flexible in the marketplace of ideas.

“In Nigeria, only few individuals dedicate their political missions to the advancement of common good. Among these rare individuals stands the Retired Permanent Secretary, a two-term governor of Benue State, a three-term Senator of the Federal Republic, a former Honourable Minister for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, and presently the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

“For over two decades, Sen. Akume has exemplified, both in rhetoric and action, a steadfast commitment to Social Compassion and Welfare Advocacy.

“This political philosophy, deeply entrenched in the essence of well-being and a profound reverence for human dignity, has served as a guiding principle throughout his tenure in public service, from his days as Permanent Secretary through to date as Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

“His enduring commitment to these ideals underscores an uncompromising belief in politics that places the welfare and dignity of every individual at the forefront. It is this principled approach that shapes his legacy, marking him as a leader dedicated to the enhancement of our society.”

Alia said that within his short period in office as SGF, Akume has played a pivotal role in the ratification of  federal projects/intervention programmes in Benue.

He said:”The approval by Mr President for the establishment of the ‘Renewed Hope Shelter Programme’ pilot scheme in the state, aimed at relocating IDPs back to their various ancestral homes, was partly possible through your instrumentation.

“This is not to mention several other intervention programmes ranging from provision of relief materials to flood victims in the state, to approval of funds for palliatives to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal.

Tendering his stewardship, Alia said:”With particular regards to palliatives, may I respectfully inform you that my administration decided to use some of the funds to cushion the effect through the procurement of 100 buses which have already been handed over to the state-owned Benue Links Transport Company, so as to ease the movement of people across the state at the most affordable rates possible. As I speak, Benue commuters are already all smiles, thanks to that transportation palliative.

“More so, we have flagged off the distribution of grains and food items as additional palliatives, to households across the 276 council wards in the state.”

The governor said politicking is over, stressing that his  administration has buckled up and begun work, with a view to bringing forth dividends of democracy to the people, based on the social contract.

He said apart from boosting agricultural activities across the state through the timely provision of fertilizers to farmers at subsidized rates, his administration has begun the construction of 16 strategic roads within Makurdi metropolis, with plans of extending same in due course to other parts of the state.

    18.         Furthermore, while ensuring prompt payment of workers’ and pensioners’ emoluments as at when due, we are also currently in talks with a number of companies and private organisations with a view to resuscitating all the moribund industries across the state, as well as building new ones to boost socio-economic growth.

    19.         The health sector is also a priorty as we have already engendered several reforms, appointments and rehabilitation/opening of some public health facilities/centres across the state, including the Muhammadu Buhari Mother and Child Hospital, amongst others. As I speak, our attention is being shifted to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, where radical reforms are already underway to deliver on our promise of provision of adequate and affordable healthcare services.

    20.         The “Light-up Makurdi” streets light project is ongoing. In addition, our administration in collaboration with Mircosoft, has already sponsored 10,000 youths who are undergoing ICT related training.

He added: “While we are focused on attracting new investments to the State, our administration is making case to be considered for 13 percent derivative given to states with mineral deposits from the Federation Account. By this, we are optimistic that again, you will use your good office to help drive the initiative.

“In the area of security, collaborations with various security agencies and formations in the state have been epic, all geared towards ensuring lasting peace and tranquility. Various stakeholders as well as the civil society, have also been very cooperative in the business of peace and security.”

  • Akume: Bureaucrat, governor and scribe at 70!

Akume: Bureaucrat, governor and scribe at 70!

    By Tunde Olusunle

Ahead of the proclamation of the “Eighth Senate” of the National Assembly and the election of its leadership, the name of George Akume was a recurring decimal. He ticked the boxes, meeting all the criteria laid out for a president of the senate for that season. He was very highly favoured to clinch the top job. Among other considerations, he is from the north-central geopolitical zone to which the office was zoned. Secondly, he was a ranking senator, having been first elected to represent Benue North West, in 2007 and re-elected in 2015 and subsequently in 2019, respectively. Akume indeed previously served for two terms as governor of his state, Benue, between 1999 and 2007.

This implied he had substantial grounding in governance, policy and statecraft. He was indeed a career bureaucrat who rose to the very peak of his calling before contesting for public office. Akume and I developed a robust relationship during his years as governor which has been sustained up till the present. I was equally very close to Akume’s deputy at the time, Ogirri Ajene, the down-to-earth, jolly blue-blood from Idoma land, who sadly passed about a decade ago.

My very good friend and brother of over four decades beginning from our years in the classroom in the University of Ilorin, Tivlumun Gabriel Nyitse, was also prominent in the Benue State bureaucracy. He subsequently became a notable figure in the politics of the state. First, he rose to the position of managing director and chief executive of the state-owned newspapers. The Voice. He was later appointed Permanent Secretary by Akume and functioned variously in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government and the Ministry of Information and Culture, respectively, under Akume’s leadership. Such was my interconnectedness with the Benue system, which has endured till this time.

In the weeks preceding the proclamation of the Eighth Senate, Akume’s Maitama, Abuja home, became a Mecca for the political class. There was a virtual round-the-clock streaming in and out by fellow politicians, friends and associates, who bought into the prospects of an Akume senate presidency. Quite a number of latter day top functionaries in the Muhammadu Buhari presidency including subsequent members of the Federal Executive Council, (FEC), took their places in his waiting room, bidding their time in the listless comings and goings, those days. The otherwise spacious premises of Akume’s home, “shrank,” literally, overwhelmed by the sudden invasion of political supporters and admirers alike. His kitchen relocated to an external annex to cope with the culinary demands of the ever surging human traffic.

Akume, unfortunately, didn’t make it to the senate presidency. As we say, the rest is history. Bukola Saraki, his colleague who won the contest, assigned him the chairmanship of the Senate Committee on the Nigerian Army. In the Seventh Senate, Akume was Minority Leader between 2011 to 2015. That was when the Peoples’ Democratic Party, (PDP), dominated the executive and legislative arms of government, under the superintendence of President Goodluck Jonathan. He had previously chaired important committees in the upper legislature and served in a broad spectrum of other organs of the parliament. He became something of a repository of legislative experience. Such systemic entrenchment is imperative for the growth and development of democratic structures in a country notorious for its scant attention for the preservation of institutional memory.

The former Benue chief executive did not make it in his attempt to return to the senate for a fourth term in 2019. The experiences he had garnered over time, however, recommended him for appointment as Minister for Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs by former President Buhari. This consecrated him as a member of the FEC, where he was in a position to canvas for attention for his home state, to complement the efforts of the state government. Akume’s critics despised his schedule describing it as a “no job” ministry. He was, however, resolved to prove doubters wrong. Whereas the Buhari administration never hosted one singular ceremony to recognise deserving Nigerians with national honours all through its first term, it is credit to Akume’s hard work that two such events were hosted within 12 months.

Friday June 2, Akume was appointed Secretary to the Government of the Federation, (SGF), by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. On Wednesday June 7, he was sworn-in as Nigeria’s 21st occupant of that office which is easily the very heart of federal governance.

A consummate public servant, charismatic politician and inimitable legislator, George Akume is 70 today, Wednesday, December 27, this season of the yuletide. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a Masters in Labour Relations, both from the University of Ibadan, (UI), Nigeria’s premier university. In the early days of his public service career, he was local government secretary and later, chairman, in his home state, Benue.

Akume was governor of Benue State for two terms of four years each, between 1999 and 2007, on the platform of the PDP. He was famous for prioritising workers’ welfare, against the backdrop of his personal, hands-on acquaintance with the tides and traditions in the public service. He was succeeded by Gabriel Suswam in 2007, even as he proceeded to the senate where he selflessly represented Benue North-West. Within the specific context of Tiv politics, Akume holds the all-time record of being the only senator serially elected on three successive occasions. In global Benue politics and probably Nigeria’s, David Alechenu Bonaventure Mark is perhaps the only Nigerian to have been elected on five consecutive occasions into the senate.

Symbolically, Akume ran for his second term in the senate on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria, (ACN), in 2011. Two years later, four political parties: the ACN; All Nigeria Peoples Party, (ANPP); the Congress for Progressive Change, (CPC); and factions of the PDP, (nPDP) and the All Peoples Grand Alliance, (APGA), coalesced to birth the All Progressives Congress, (APC). Akume’s third shot at the senate was therefore on the podium of the APC. He is easily one of very few Nigerian politicians to have flown the flag of three different political brands in popular elections.

Akume is substantially credited with the odyssey of the APC in Benue politics and would further lead it to take over the governorship during the 2015 elections. He latched on latent disaffection within the ranks of the PDP during the party’s gubernatorial primary in December 2014, and poached Samuel Ioraer Ortom, who felt hard done by the process which produced the PDP flagbearer. Ortom who was immediate past Minister of State for Trade and Investment, thereafter defeated the candidate of the PDP, Terhemen Tarzoor, at the general polls. Akume and Ortom would, in a short while, go their different ways as is characteristic of “godfather-godson” relationships in Nigerian politics.

More recently, Akume rallied everything, every stunt in his arsenal as a dominant political force in Benue State, to upstage once again upstage the PDP, during the general elections in February and March this year. His candidate, Hyacinth Alia a Catholic priest, trounced Titus Tyoapine Uba, former Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, who was favoured to win since he was backed by a sitting PDP government. The Akume whirlwind equally swept two of the three senatorial seats in the state, into the bag of his party, among other harvests. The Idoma/Agatu peoples of “Zone C” in Benue politics survived the Tsunami and stood solidly behind their PDP candidate, Abba Moro, who contested for the senatorial position for a second time.

Having been governor, senator and minister all within the initial 24-year span of Nigeria’s contemporary politics, George Akume without dispute, is one of the most prepared Nigerians to drive the engine of governance and administration at this epoch in the nation’s development. Yes, he has seen it all beginning from the padded swivel chair of Government House; to the theatre-style, red-lacquered parliament, and thenceforth to the marbled interiors of the chambers of the federal executive council. Articulate, accessible, unassuming, experienced, broad-minded and thoroughly pan-Nigerian, he can be trusted to deliver.

President Bola Tinubu has poured encomiums on the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, on today’s celebration of his 70 birthday.

The President described the SGF as one of the most reliable Nigerians.

A statement yesterday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, reads: “George Akume is one of the most reliable citizens this country can boast of. The people of Benue have subscribed to his sterling leadership principles and leveraged his remarkable talent for so many years because of what he has always stood for.

“He will be with you in the best of days, and even most reliably in the worst of days. The country has been blessed with the dedication and sure-handedness of Senator Akume.”

Wishing the celebrant good health and strength, the President implored Senator Akume not to relent in his diligent service to the country.

Also, Akume has said he is not interested in vying for any elective office again.

The former two-term governor of Benue State, two-term senator representing Benue North West and former minister of Special Duties spoke at a colloquium/symposium to mark his 70th birthday celebration organised by the Benue State government.

Responding to a comment by a former Jigawa State Governor Ibrahim Saminu Turaki, Akume said: “I have no ambition to run for a public office again. We have to encourage and give the younger ones a chance.

“In 2031, I will be 78. For me, no more (public office).”

The SGF urged Benue State residents to support Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“They need your prayers and I also need your prayers.

“I implore every one of you in the state to continue to pray for the governor. These are trying times. I speak as one with the experience of the office of the governor. It is not an easy thing. Just be praying and be patient.

“Remember: your hard work ensured his victory. If he fails, you have also failed,” he said.

Akume recalled that in his over 25 years in politics, he had encountered considerable moments, some of which were very unpleasant.

The SGF said he had kept trudging on, calling for tolerance and hoping for the best for the country and its people in the years ahead.

He counseled Benue State residents to see their diversity as a blessing and not as a curse.

“We should see diversity as a blessing and manage it very well. Our President recognises this and is using it to good effect for all to see. Diversity has ensured the greatness of America and other nations. Our diversity must be seen as an asset and not a liability,” Akume said.

Governor Alia, who was represented by his deputy, Sam Ode, described Akume as a passionate leader with the interest of his people at heart.

The governor hailed President Tinubu and Senator Akume for their purposeful leadership towards making the country a better place for all.

Also, eminent Nigerians yesterday poured encomiums on the SGF on today’s celebration of his 70th birthday.

House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas said Akume has contributed immensely to the growth of the nation’s democratic culture.

In a congratulatory message to the SGF, the Speaker noted that Senator Akume has contributed immensely to public administration and governance not just in his home state but also across the country.

House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu described Akume as a consummate politician, patriot, and democrat who is committed to the development of Benue State and Nigeria.

In a congratulatory message by his Special Assistant on Press Affairs, Udora Orizu, the Deputy Speaker noted that having been governor, senator, minister and now SGF, Akume is one of the most experienced and articulate political leaders driving the engine of good governance for nation’s development.

Also, in a congratulatory message by its Convener/Chairman Pro Tem, Senator Basheer Lado, the 108 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) non-serving senators said: “Your journey has been marked not only by professional accomplishments but by the profound simplicity and humility that define your character.

“Your ability to connect with people on a personal level has endeared you to the hearts of many, creating a lasting impact beyond the corridors of power.

“We would be remiss not to acknowledge your absolute loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which has been the cornerstone in the successful realisation of the President’s vision.

“Your role as the engine room of the government has been crucial in steering our collective efforts toward a brighter and more prosperous future.”
