…hail late statesman’s patriotism, lasting legacy

A former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Audu Ogbeh, is dead.

A statement issued by the Ogbeh family said that the elder statesman who was also a former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, died on Saturday, August 9, at the age of 78.

The family described the deceased as a patriarch who left a legacy of integrity, service and dedication to the country and community.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Chief Audu Ogbeh. He passed away on August 9 at the fulfilled age of 78.

“He departed peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, service and dedication to our nation and community. We are comforted by the many lives he touched and the example he set,” the family said.

Reacting to the elder statesman’s demise, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described him as a patriot whose wisdom, dedication, and pursuit of progress left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political landscape.

In a condolence message to the government and people of Benue State, the President said the nation had lost a statesman of rare intellect and commitment to national development.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President also commiserated with the late politician’s family, friends, and associates.

President Tinubu noted the late Ogbeh’s deep intellectual contributions to policy formulation and his skill in articulating practical solutions to the country’s complex challenges.

“He was always ready with facts and figures to support his propositions. The nation will sorely miss his insightful perspectives and wealth of experience,” the President said.

Joining politics in the 1970s as a legislator, Chief Ogbeh became a respected voice in governance, earning a reputation for principled service and an unwavering belief in Nigeria’s potential, said Tinubu, as he prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul and

God’s comfort to his bereaved family.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, described the deceased as a man of integrity and deep commitment to the Nigerian project, saying his death is a monumental loss to the nation.

Akume, who paid a condolence visit to Ogbeh’s Abuja residence on Saturday, hailed the elder statesman as a distinguished leader, consummate public servant, and patriot who dedicated his life to the service of his people and the country in various capacities.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Akume described Ogbeh as a “distinguished leader, teacher, patriot, consummate public servant, and quintessential intellectual, who shone more than a million stars in the service of his community, Benue State, and Nigeria as a whole.”

“Our prayers are with the family and loved ones he left behind, and we pray that Almighty God will grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss of this perfect gentleman,” he added.

Likewise, former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo expressed shock and sadness over Ogbeh’s demise.

Obasanjo who is in Uganda on a visit, described the late Minister as a peace-loving, unassuming, committed patriot and a firm believer in democracy and participatory governance.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, the former President stressed that late Ogbeh “will be missed for his commitment to politics, governance and democracy and the re-establishment of democracy in Nigeria.  His place will be very difficult to fill within his community, the State, the Party and the nation.”

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, also expressed sadness over the passing of Ogbeh.

Akpabio, in a statement through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, described the late statesman as a distinguished Nigerian that lived a life of service and integrity.

“Chief Ogbeh lived a life of service, integrity, and commitment to the development of our nation. He was an intellectual store house, whose legacy of service and dedication to Nigeria is a testament to his character and commitment to public service. We will sorely miss him.

“On behalf of my family, constituents and the 10th Senate, I extend our deepest condolences to the family of Chief Audu Ogbeh, his friends, political associates, and the people and government of Benue State as well as our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, on his part, described Ogbeh’s demise as a rude shock stressing that the late Audu Ogbeh was a quintessential gentleman, an amiable friend and reliable political ally, whose immense contributions to nation-building would be sorely missed.

“He was a detribalised and development-minded politician. One who combined intellectualism with pragmatism. He was also a true defender of liberal democracy. His type is difficult to replace,” Atiku said, and prayed that “the Almighty blissfully rests his soul and comfort his family.”

The Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former President of the Senate, David Mark, also lamented the death of frontline politician and former PDP chairman.

In a statement by his media aide, Paul Mumeh, in Abuja, Senator Mark said: “I have lost a dependable brother and friend.”

Mark recalled that Ogbeh was among the rare breed of political leaders who genuinely believed in the unity of Nigeria, where no citizen should be oppressed or denied the opportunity to fulfil their dreams.

“Ogbeh preached justice, fairness, and equity. He was morally upright even in the face of adversity,” he said, urging his family and the people of Benue State to take solace in the fact that the deceased lived an exemplary life worthy of emulation.

Former Delta State Governor, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, on his part, stated that the late Ogbeh was one of the most effective national chairmen in the history of the PDP.

In a personal tribute, Ibori praised the late Ogbeh as a humble and unassuming gentleman who valued integrity above money or personal gain.

Ibori recalled that during his bid for re-election as governor in 2003, Ogbeh was given direct instructions to block his candidacy. However, Ogbeh, being a man of principle, refused to comply with what he termed “devilish machinations.” Ibori went on to contest and win the election, completing his second term in 2007.

“On behalf of myself, my wife, and my entire family, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his wife, children, and the good people of Benue State. May his gentle soul rest in peace,” he said.

The Northern State Governors’ Forum (NSGF) also expressed sadness over the demise of the elder statesman.

Chairman of the forum and Governor of Gombe, Inuwa Yahaya, in a condolence message issued by his Media Aide, Ismaila Uba-Misilli,on Saturday, in Gombe, described Ogbeh as a towering political figure, a statesman of uncommon intellect and an iconic son of Northern Nigeria.

“Chief Audu Ogbeh was an accomplished leader, a seasoned politician and multifaceted scholar whose contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey and development will remain etched in history.

“He brought dignity and depth to every office he held and served the country with integrity and commitment,” he said.

The NSGF chairman described Ogbeh’s death as a huge loss not only to Benue and the north, but also to the entire country as he left behind a legacy of patriotism, intellectual depth, humility and outstanding public service.

The Northern Senators’ Forum (NSF) also condoled with the family of late Ogbeh; Chairman of the Forum, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, in a statement in Abuja, described him as a statesman whose vision extended beyond politics into the fields and homes of Nigerian farmers. During his tenure as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, he launched initiatives like the Agricultural Inputs Mechanisation and Management Services (AIMMS) to enhance transparency and reduce fraud.

“In his public life, Chief Ogbeh always put Nigeria first, preaching about the unity and betterment of Nigeria. He was a good ambassador of Benue State, and his contributions to national development will be remembered.”

Ibori went on to contest and win the election, completing his second term in 2007.

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) equally expressed deep shock over Ogbeh’s demise, describing him as a nationalist and one of Nigeria’s biggest farmers.

In a condolence message signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba, the Forum described Ogbeh as “a passionate and large-scale farmer” and “a committed son of Arewa,”stressing that his contributions to agriculture, politics, and national unity were indelible.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has dissociated himself and his office from a growing wave of fraudulent activities involving job scammers.

Such people impersonate top government officials to solicit payments for fictitious federal appointments.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, the SGF warned the public to be wary of criminals who clone the identities and phone numbers of prominent officials to lure unsuspecting victims with fake promises of appointments into federal boards and parastatals.

Akume said the scammers typically inform their targets that they have been shortlisted for government positions and then demand payments ranging from N5 million to N15 million to facilitate the appointments.

Tinubu’s administration will not leave any region behind in development—Akume

President Bola Tinubu has assured that his administration will ensure equitable development across all regions of the country, with no area left behind.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume gave the assurance in Kaduna State at a two-day interactive programme on Government-Citizen Engagement organised by the Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation.

He said ministers’ interactions with  stakeholders at the event will unveil empirical facts and figures that the North is not neglected.

Senator Akume who highlighted key achievements under the Renewed Hope Agenda, spoke on several interventions of the present administration including economic reforms, education , health, security, Infrastructure and food security.

On economic reforms, the SGF said the Tinubu administration has implemented bold reforms to stabilise and grow the economy, including unifying the exchange rate and restructuring debt profiles.

While stressing that investments have been made in modernising security equipment and upskilling personnel, he listed major projects to include the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Sokoto- Badagry super highway, ongoing rail projects (Kano-Maradi, Port Harcourt-Maiduguri), and housing initiatives.

Akume, who led a high-powered Federal Government delegation made of Ministers, Director-Generals of many agencies and top political aides from the North and across the country, highlighted the Renewed Hope Agenda priorities to include reforming the economy for sustained growth, strengthening national security, boosting agriculture for food security, unlocking energy and natural resources and enhancing infrastructure and transportation.

Others are focusing on education, health, and social investment, accelerating diversification through industrialisation and innovation as well as improving governance for effective service delivery.

“The removal of fuel subsidy, though painful, has been a necessary reform that saved trillions of Naira. The Palliative Measures Plan and interventions through state governments, MSME support, and public transportation upgrades are mitigating the impacts. The savings are now being redirected into critical infrastructure and human development while states are receiving increased allocations for development,” he said.

Reflecting on the theme of the event, ‘Assessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-Citizen Engagement for National Development,’ the SGF said the Renewed Hope Agenda has been a pragmatic vision built on pillars of good governance, including transparency, accountability, participation, responsiveness, equity, rule of law, and inclusivity, going beyond just a campaign slogan.

His words: “The  economic reform strategies are designed to create a robust, diversified, and resilient economy. By fostering an environment conducive to investment and innovation, the administration aims to stimulate growth across all sectors, reduce unemployment, and ensure equitable wealth distribution.

“Security is the bedrock of national development. The focus here is on enhancing the capabilities of our security forces, promoting peace and stability, and ensuring that every Nigerian feels safe and protected, no matter where they reside.

“Agriculture holds the key to our nation’s self-sufficiency and economic empowerment. By modernizing farming practices, increasing access to finance, and expanding market opportunities for farmers. This administration places Nigeria on a path to achieving food security and transforming our country into an agricultural powerhouse.

“Through reforms, the government is unlocking the potential of Nigeria’s vast natural resources and energy sector. Through sustainable management, increased investments, and the adoption of modern technologies, the goal remains to drive economic growth and ensure environmental sustainability”.

According to him, over 400,000 students in tertiary institutions have so far benefitted from the Student Loan Programme, while an estimated N53billion has been disbursed.

He also highlighted the importance of patience and collective effort in achieving the agenda’s goals.

He extolled the virtues of former Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello, describing him as a phenomenal being who promoted national cohesion and unity in Nigeria.

Senator Akume also saluted the courage, sincerity and patriotism of other leaders such as Chief Solomon Lar, Mallam Adamu Ciroma, Shehu Dan Musa, Abubakar Rimi, Prof Suleman Kumo, Issac Shaahu, Prof Jerry Gana and others.

Akume: Livestock ministry a strategic boost to Nigeria’s economic potential

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has described the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration as a clear demonstration of the government’s resolve to harness the vast and largely untapped economic potential of Nigeria’s livestock sector.

Speaking on Tuesday at the Annual Blueprint Impact Series and Awards Ceremony in Abuja, the SGF said the livestock sector holds immense promise as a driver of socio-economic transformation, especially in rural communities.

“The establishment of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development underscores the importance the President attaches to unlocking the vast potential in this sector. Nigeria is home to millions of livestock, yet we have barely scratched the surface of its economic possibilities — from meat and dairy production to hides, skins, and processed exports to regional and global markets”, Senator Akume stated.

According to him, the Tinubu administration is committed to strategic investment, infrastructure development, value chain enhancement, and regional trade facilitation to reposition livestock as a cornerstone of the nation’s development efforts.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Akume added that the government is confident the sector will become a key pillar in driving inclusive growth, job creation, and rural revitalisation.

The SGF also commended Blueprint newspaper for its consistency in promoting development journalism and recognising excellence in public service and private enterprise.

He lauded the media organisation’s annual recognition event as a testament to its role in nation-building.

You guard our conscience, inform public opinion, shape discourse, and hold leaders accountable. Most importantly, you promote solutions, innovations, and recognise success stories that can inspire progress across all sectors”, he said.

Senator Akume noted that the theme of the event, Exploring Potentials of Livestock Exports in Nigeria, aligns perfectly with the policy direction of the present administration and its renewed commitment to diversifying the economy through agriculture and agribusiness.

He also congratulated the awardees honoured at the event for their outstanding service and contributions to national progress, commending them for exemplifying sectoral leadership and dedication to excellence.

Climate change: We are running out of time, Akume warns

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume has warned Nigerians against the dangers of climate change, saying the country is running out of time to combat its impact.

The SGF, who called on stakeholders to collaborate to mitigate the impact of climate change, also emphasised the need for sustainable land use practices to reduce the effects of climate change.

He disclosed this in Abuja on Wednesday at a high-level stakeholder and policy engagement on climate change, sustainable land use and agriculture organised by the African Centre for Climate Actions and Rural Development (ACCARD) Initiative.

Akume said climate change threatens human existence, peace, security, and national development.

He, however, reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to supporting climate change, safe, healthy food initiatives aimed at resilient living, sustainability, and prosperity for all Nigerian citizens.

The SGF, who was represented by his Special Adviser Technical, Prof. Babatunde Benard, said: “We are running out of time. The global impact of climate change has taken a fatal dimension.

“Climate change has adverse effects now more than ever before. It is threatening human existence. It threatens peace, security, and national development. These effects are increasingly manifesting as floods, desertification, erosion, and conditions making predictions a challenging task.

“In Nigeria, the adverse effects of climate change are seen to have caused and aggravated the competition for natural resources, biodiversity and livelihood losses, as well as greater conflicts. The ever-growing human population and worsening climate change impacts are driving food conflicts, low productivity, food shortage, and hunger in demand”.

On the impact of climate change on land use, Akume said: “Climate change has been exacerbated by the unsustainable land use application of agrochemicals. We no longer weed the farms. Now we must spray, even if it is just one square meter, we use chemicals to spray the weed there. This leads to loss of fertile lands and, of course, natural capital resources.

“The potential negative impact on the human environment can only be averted if the land is used sustainably. Land must be used sustainably to obtain the maximum benefits. This entails careful use of application of fertiliser, herbicides, and pesticides to land during agricultural cultivation, use of land for roads, rails, buildings, and civil infrastructure.

Akume called on Nigerians to join hands with the present administration to build a nation that will inspire pride amongst generations to come.

He also commended the Founder of the ACCARD Initiative, Amb. Freeman Oluowo for his determination towards winning the war against climate change for economic and sustainable development of Nigeria and Africa.

Amb. Oluowo said the meeting was called to tackle the multiple and worsening challenges associated with climate change.

He said that with the establishment and implementation of the right policies, climate change-related issues would be addressed.

Oluowo said, “Looking at the food system, people are eating unhealthy food and there is a need to ensure that food in the market is safe for consumption. So, this meeting was called to find solution to climate change and sustainable land use.

“In Nigeria, we have been talking about the farmers-herders crisis that it’s political, but we fail to understand that climate change drives a lot of change.

We are working with the Nigerian government to help put the right policy structure in place. We are also engaging with the World Bank and other development financiers to enable the government to access more intervention funds for sustainable development goals.”

SGF Akume appoints Yomi Odunuga as media adviser

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has appointed a renowned journalist, Yomi Odunuga as his special adviser on media and publicity.

A statement released on Thursday revealed that the appointment takes immediate effect.

Until his appointment, Odunuga was a deputy editor with The Nation Newspaper.

Yomi Odunuga started his journalism career with The Punch newspapers as a Proof Reader. He was the Abuja Bureau Chief and Deputy Editor (Nation’s Capital) of The Nation newspapers.

Born on June 2, 1966, Mr Odunuga a poet, lyricist, reporter, and columnist, started his journalism career with the PUNCH newspaper over 27 years ago.

He was, for several years, the State House Correspondent of the paper where he maintained two columns–Life in Abuja and the popular weekend treat called Inside Aso Rock.

His insightful and critical analysis of the intriguing politics of that period earned him accolades and recognition which later saw him being promoted to the position of Abuja Bureau Chief of The PUNCH newspaper.

In 2006, he was elevated to the position of Group Political Editor of The PUNCH.

He later joined THE NATION newspaper as an Assistant Editor and Bureau Chief in Abuja. At THE NATION, his rested PUNCH newspaper column, Knuckles, transformed into Knucklehead, which offers him the opportunity to continue his weekly interrogation and critique of the socio-political developments in the polity.

In 2019, he was appointed as Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, to the Deputy President of the 9th Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.

After completing his tour of duty at the National Assembly for four years (2019 to 2023), he returned to the newsroom of The NATION newspapers as a Deputy Editor charged with the responsibility of conducting special interviews in addition to writing incisive and analytical articles.

APC chair: I’m not in a hurry to abdicate presidential assignment — Akume

…distances self from reports linking him to APC leadership race

…reaffirms loyalty to Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has firmly debunked reports suggesting his interest in contesting for the position of national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying he remains fully committed to the national assignment entrusted to him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The former Benue State Governor and Senate Minority Leader described the publication linking him to the party’s top seat as “a fabrication” aimed at distracting him from the enormous task at hand, adding that he is not in a hurry to abandon the critical responsibility placed upon him by the President.

“My focus remains on helping President Tinubu realise the Renewed Hope Agenda for Nigerians. That’s the task I have, and I take it seriously,” Akume said, reacting to a recent newspaper report that listed him among northern political heavyweights eyeing the APC chairmanship seat.

“I am not in a hurry to abdicate my responsibility and the task that the President of the Federal Republic has placed before me. Everything I have been in life has come through the grace of God and the instrumentality of people like President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I cannot be in a race I am not interested in”, he added.

According to a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Yomi Odunuga, the SGF warned against dragging his name into intra-party permutations when his full attention is devoted to coordinating policy implementation across federal ministries and agencies.

“Senator Akume is not jostling with anyone for the post of either the APC National Chairman or any other position in the party. His main focus is to ensure he does not betray the intrinsic trust President Tinubu reposes in him”, the statement read.

The statement stressed that Akume’s mission remains rooted in accelerating national development as envisioned under the Renewed Hope Agenda, a comprehensive roadmap set by the Tinubu administration to deliver economic recovery, improved infrastructure, and inclusive governance.

While acknowledging that there are qualified candidates from the North-Central region should the party decide to zone the chairmanship position there, Akume insisted that his priority lies elsewhere — in the successful delivery of good governance to the Nigerian people.

“To say that I am one of the prominent politicians gunning for the position of APC Chairman is completely false. We are working day and night to deliver on the promises made under the Renewed Hope Agenda, under the direct supervision of the President, and we are totally committed to this”, he said.

Senator Akume’s clarification comes at a time when the APC is reportedly considering internal restructuring ahead of the 2027 general elections, sparking speculation about potential reshuffles in the party’s leadership hierarchy.

Observers have noted that his name may have surfaced due to his political pedigree and stature in the North-Central region.

However, Akume dismissed such assumptions as premature and unfounded, reiterating his belief that leadership positions are ultimately ordained by divine timing.

“I am a firm believer in the principle that whatever God plans for you will surely come to pass. So I cannot be distracted by rumours or speculations about a race I am not in”, he affirmed.

The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation also used the opportunity to caution media outlets against the publication of politically sensitive content without due diligence, stressing the importance of accuracy and ethical journalism.

“The Office of the SGF would appreciate, in the principle of fairness, that professionalism and the ethics of journalism should be taken seriously in reportage, especially in stories as sensitive as this, which are capable of heating the polity,” Odunuga noted.

He encouraged media practitioners to seek clarifications from his office to avoid the spread of misinformation that could undermine national stability or distract key public officials from their duties.

As the administrative engine room of the federal government, the SGF’s role remains central to the implementation of presidential policies.

Since his appointment in June 2023, Akume has played a leading role in supporting President Tinubu’s drive to streamline public service delivery, monitor the performance of ministers, and harmonize the activities of ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) under a unified governance vision.

His efforts have been particularly vital in executing several cross-cutting reform initiatives, including digitalisation of government processes, enhanced inter-ministerial collaboration, and the re-engineering of social investment programmes.

In a statement signed by his media adviser, Yomi Odunuga, on Wednesday, Akume described the publication, which appeared in a newspaper not The Nation, as a fabrication aimed at distracting him from his official duties.

“To say that I am one of the prominent politicians gunning for the position of APC Chairman is completely false.”

Akume meets Benue monarchs on Tinubu’s directive for lasting peace

As part of fresh efforts to end the cycle of violence in Benue State, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has met with the state’s two foremost traditional rulers following a presidential directive to constitute a strategic peace committee.

The meeting, held in Benue State, brought together the Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty Orchivirigh Prof. James Ayatse, and the Och’Idoma, His Royal Majesty Agabaidu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John, in what is seen as a significant step in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s renewed push for enduring peace in Nigeria’s food basket.

Senator Akume conveyed the President’s deep concern over the latest wave of violence in the state, describing the attacks as “heartbreaking” and reiterating the Federal Government’s resolve to “end the senseless killings in the food basket of the nation and across the country.”

According to a statement issued yesterday by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Office of the SGF, Segun Imohiosen, Akume told the monarchs “we want to appeal to you to continue to stay vigilant so that miscreants do not infiltrate the communities. Whenever you observe a breach, do not resist in informing us. The President will never disappoint you.”

He emphasised that the inclusion of the Tor Tiv and the Och’Idoma in the peace process underscores the Tinubu administration’s recognition of the pivotal role traditional institutions play in conflict resolution, community dialogue, and grassroots peacebuilding.

The high-level engagement marks the beginning of a broader national effort to restore calm in Benue State, where inter-communal violence and criminal attacks have claimed scores of lives and displaced thousands in recent years.

In their separate remarks, the monarchs commended President Tinubu for his direct involvement in the matter and his recent visit to assess the situation firsthand.

They pledged their full cooperation with the peace initiative and called on all communities in the state to embrace dialogue and support the peace process once the committee is formally inaugurated.

The Tor Tiv and Och’Idoma also urged local stakeholders, youth leaders, and community groups to resist the temptation of reprisal and instead channel grievances through lawful and peaceful means.

The proposed strategic peace committee, which is to be led by Senator Akume, has commenced consultations immediately.

Its mandate includes investigating the root causes of persistent violence in the state, promoting inclusive dialogue among stakeholders, and recommending sustainable solutions for long-term reconciliation and security.

The peace initiative comes at a time of heightened national focus on rural insecurity, with the Tinubu administration moving to recalibrate its internal security response and integrate local leadership more directly into stabilization efforts.
