Why It’s easier to marry women who don’t live with you – Ali Baba

Stand-up comedian Atunyota Akpobome popularly known as Ali Baba, has shared thoughts on polygamy, stating that it is easier for men to marry women who do not live under the same roof.

Speaking on The Clarity Zone podcast, the comedian explained that such arrangements often prevent domestic tension among wives.

“It’s easier to marry women who don’t live in your house with you. Those ones don’t come to disturb the Iyale,” he said.

He went on to share an analogy he learned from a wealthy man, comparing the structure of polygamous households to the situation in Nigeria.

“This man has four wives, all four wives but one don’t work. The one that works is a medical doctor and she has a thriving business, makes good money, takes what she wants and gives the rest to Oga. Oga then distributes to the other ones. The man still adds his own to it, but everybody is okay.

“Then one day the woman says, ‘Oh, my son wants to go to Canada, that’s where he wants to go to school.’ And the other women say, ‘My son is not going to Canada, your own is not going to Canada as well.’ So she calls the man and says, ‘I don’t understand what these people are saying, that my son will not go to Canada.’ She said ‘okay,’ then she stopped giving money to the man, and all the other women started fighting. Two left. When the two left, the other two that were remaining…”

He likened the story to Nigeria’s economic reality, using the Niger Delta as a metaphor.

“That’s the thing that’s happening to Nigeria now. The Niger Delta is the one bringing the money. You take the money and share it to everybody. And when Niger Delta says, ‘We need three bridges,’ you say, ‘No, we have to distribute the bridges around everybody. We can’t give you three bridges yet.’”

Ali Baba concluded by emphasizing the importance of fairness in polygamous marriages.

“Which is why they said that if you decide to marry more than one wife, you must treat everybody equally.”

  • I’ve witnessed infidelity among ‘influential people’ – Ali Baba

I’ve witnessed infidelity among ‘influential people’ – Ali Baba

Stand-up comedian Ali Baba said he has witnessed infidelity involving wives of influential men while visiting homes of other prominent men.

He stated  this on the “Outside the Box” podcast, stating that these powerful individuals would openly engage in extramarital affairs, even going as far as to instruct their mistresses to return inside while they’re not finished with them.

Ali Baba described the stark contrast between the secret affairs and the public facade of perfect relationships.

He recalled greeting these women at social events, only to be met with awkward exchanges, as if nothing out of the ordinary was happening.

“I’ve been in the houses of a lot of big big men, Governors and the rest of them. And I see wives of a lot of people that I know coming to do things and I would greet, ‘how are you? How is everything?”

“And then those guys would do their philandering and tap her bum ‘come on go back inside I’m not finished with you’ and then she goes back inside.

“And then I run into her at an event in Lagos and the husband is saying ‘oh how are you, meet my wife’, I say ‘oh madam it’s a pleasure, I’ve not seen you in nearly five years, where have you been?’ and she’s like ‘I’ve been around, good to see you’ and then we’ll continue. And maybe she sees me somewhere again, she calls me and says ‘Ali thanks’, I say ‘it’s okay’.” he said.

  • Why Nigerians are fleeing abroad, by Ali Baba

Why Nigerians are fleeing abroad, by Ali Baba

Popular comedian Ali Baba  has shed light on why many Nigerians are relocating abroad, stressing on the frustration with the country’s infrastructure, security concerns and financial burdens as key reasons.

Speaking on ‘Outside The Box’ podcast, Alibaba shares a personal anecdote about a friend, an Assistant General Manager at a bank, who spent N130,000 monthly on fuel and N1 million on diesel for electricity.

This, he said, combined with expensive education, security and housing costs, totalled N22-N23 million per quarter.

According to him, his friend wondered if this money could be better spent on a mortgage overseas.

Ali Baba explained, “He had three cars, the one the office gave him, his personal car which the Madam uses and one for the house. The office takes care of the official car including fuel and driver, so he has to take care of two cars. The driver will take two children to one school, then the madam will take the other child to the other school. Every month he was spending N130,000 on fuel, and then at home, he was doing about a million naira on diesel to provide electricity.

“The wife had a confectionery business at the back. Feeding for the family, his drivers, and the siblings living with them. Security was also very important. Education was expensive, two were below twelve, and the other one was about 13 or 14. He has to pay the house rent every year. Mortgage is not something we’re used to here, I think it’s just beginning to grow on us. When he totalled all of this, it was running into N22-N23 million every term, about every quarter.”

Ali Baba highlighted several differences between living in Nigeria and abroad, stating that abroad, children attend public schools with reliable transportation, eliminating the need for private school fees.

“Then he said if I convert this, can I be doing it as a mortgage to a house I have overseas? Alibaba continued, emphasising the differences between living in Nigeria and abroad.

“If he does that, would he still be paying school fees for the children? He may not be paying school fees, they’ll go to public schools. There, school buses will pick up and drop them or the distance to school is walkable.

“What is the security for children? Will anybody kidnap two of his children and come and say bring money? No. When the children graduate what are the chances that they would find work there and what are the chances that they would find work here?

“If he is there, would he be employing drivers and paying for a gateman, security, wash man and others? No. Most times when people do all of those calculations, they come to a point where they say let’s give it a shot.”

He added that kidnappings and police harassment are less common overseas and children can find work after graduating, and parents don’t need to employ drivers or security personnel.

“It is true that when you are in Nigeria, the chances and opportunities that come to you to make a lot of money increase. Some of them don’t pay taxes. You can just be named Commissioner for Finance and your economic trajectory has changed. Would that happen overseas? No!

“But would somebody kidnap your children overseas and demand something and they can’t find the people? No. Would you get a call one day and they say your son was carrying dreadlocks and they’ve picked him up and said you should come and bail him?

“Would the police stop you at night and the chances of you having an altercation with them arise overseas if you’re not living right? Yes, but if you’re living right you don’t have that kind of stress”, he said.

Ali Baba emphasised that disappointment with Nigeria’s government and infrastructure drives people to relocate.

He criticises the lack of a reliable national registry, citing issues with database management and population census.

He revealed this on the Leadership Podcast with Stephen Akintayo.

According to him, the incident occurred during Abacha’s presidency at an event in Abuja where Ali Baba was tasked with introducing the Akwa Ibom cultural group.

“The first close encounter I had with death was with Sani Abacha. As Abacha wore folded sunglasses, Ali Baba boldly asked him to remove them, saying, “So then they started dancing I stopped them and faced Abacha, saying, ‘your excellency, sir, it’s almost 10; why are you wearing Dark shades? Don’t you want to see their performance? Remove this shade na,’” he narrated.

He said Abacha obliged but the tension escalated when he noticed DSS officers heading backstage.

“He then removed the glasses and was talking to someone and when he kept the glasses I told the troupe to continue. As soon as they started, I saw the DSS officers going backstage to wait for God knows who o.”

Fearing for his safety, he said he decided to sit next to Abacha instead of going backstage, where the operatives awaited.

“I went down the stage to where Abacha was and sat on the ground next to him. He made jokes of me and asked why I refused to go backstage and I said , ‘Don’t worry, sir, they can come and arrest me here,” he concluded.

How a popular musician lavished N1.5b in two months – Ali Baba

Renowned comedian, Ali Baba, has shared a startling story of a popular Nigerian musician’s reckless spending, revealing that the artist squandered over N1.5 billion in less than two months.

In an interview with Eden Oasis Realty podcast, Ali Baba, disclosed that the musician, whose identity he kept anonymous, earned N400 million from a Dubai performance and N500 million from another international event.

However, the musician’s windfall was short-lived, as he lavished the funds on extravagant purchases, including a Maybach, another car, jewellery, and shopping sprees.

Ali Baba criticised the musician’s financial decisions, suggesting alternative investments such as buying land, building a studio for artists to record and generate income, and constructing an event centre.

The comedian pointed out the irony of the musician renting a hall for his recent wedding, despite having the means to build his own.

“I told a musician, a very top musician, if he hears this he would know he is the one I am talking about. He went to play in Dubai; they paid him nearly N400 million; he went to play in another International event, and they paid him about N500 million.

“The next thing, he has a Maybach, has another car, and goes on a spree with jewellery and all other things. And in less than two to six months, he has done about 1.5 billion. He would have bought land, done an event, and put a powerful studio upstairs.

“People will come there and shoot and do their music thing, and the venue will bring enough money to buy anything he wants to buy. Then it was time for him to get married, and he had to use a hall. But if he had built the hall, he wouldn’t have needed to spend the money for the hall”, he said.

  • How I welcomed my triplets at 59 – Ali Baba

How I welcomed my triplets at 59 – Ali Baba

Renowned comedian Atunyota Akpobome, aka Ali Baba, has opened up about welcoming triplets at 59.

In a recent conversation on the Leadership Podcast, Ali Baba said he and his wife, Mary, initially planned to have one more son, driven by Mary’s desire for another child after their kids left for abroad to study.

The couple considered adoption but opted for In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) instead, intending to fertilise two eggs.

However, fate had other plans as one egg split into two, resulting in triplets.

Recounting Mary’s persuasive argument that influenced his decision, Ali Baba said: “Madam had always wanted to have a son. She had two daughters and we talked about it.

“So, I told her I didn’t want to be having school runs, joining Wizkid and attending PTA meetings. One truth is the nest becomes empty when all the children have to go abroad to study and the discussion comes up again.

“By the way, she had wanted to adopt two or three children to take care of them. One day, she then said instead of adopting, let’s just have our own. I was like, OK, but the way the economy is and she replied, ‘you said the economy is bad,’ I said yes and she said, have you stopped paying house rent for people? I said no. She asked again, “Have you stopped paying school fees?” and I said no.

“We have a foundation, the Purple Girl Foundation, taking care of over 120 people in schools from primary to university. Beyond that foundation, we have people we are paying school fees for and people we are sending to law school. So, she said all those people you are helping, do you remember the economy?

“She said if you think about it, the reason why God put you in this position might be more than taking care of yourself. So I said okay, let’s do one and she now said if we do one you know that IVFD fails so let’s do two.

“So, I said, let’s do two and then one of the eggs split into two and that was how it became three. When it became three she and the doctor knew that it had become three but they didn’t want to tell me. So they they were like sometimes when we ask God for one million, he gives you two million. When God want to bless you you don’t know how he wants to bless you, he will just do.

“So, I was like where is this going? She said the eggs split into two and I said it was two we were looking for and she said it is now three. Then we have three boys.”

If you earn more than your man, let him quit his job – Ali Baba tells women

Renowned comedian Ali Baba has criticized men who feel insecure about their partners earning more than they do.

In response to a story about a man asking his wife to leave her job because of his own insecurities, Ali Baba questioned the authenticity of that situation.

He stressed that a woman’s earning potential shouldn’t be influenced by her partner’s feelings of insecurity.

He criticised men whose self-confidence is tied to their financial status, labeling them “lazy bumcums” peddling “stupid narratives.”

Ali Baba cited examples of powerful couples, like Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham, to drive home his point.

He wrote on Instagram: “All these lies you people are sharing will keeeeee you people soon. Who are these women who fall for such lies? If you earn more than your man, let him quit his own job. Nonsense!!! who are these lazy bumcums peddling these stup!d narratives?

“You are earning N1.5m a month… and your madam is earning 10m monthly. And with that kind of job comes different benefits… you will tell her to resign.

“That means your self-confidence is financially driven and anchored. Insecurities my foot. So, Stedman will tell Oprah Winfrey to resign…Who is bringing up these men with self-esteem that is defined by financial status?

“No wonder, once a woman looks rich and exudes prosperity vibes… these sorts of men become weaklings. Instead of being challenged and driven to upgrade your financial status. Shiooooor”.

Ali Baba: Nigerian musicians have done more for national awareness than ambassadors

Veteran comedian, Ali Baba, in a recent interview on Channels Television, stated that Nigerian musicians have significantly boosted the country’s national awareness, surpassing the efforts of any official ambassadors.

He expressed disappointment that, despite the substantial contributions of entertainers, the entertainment industry has been overlooked in the government’s economic plans.

Ali Baba cited a forecast by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group that omitted the entertainment and creative sectors, stressing the global value of the creative industry.

He praised Burna Boy, noting that the artist has elevated national awareness more effectively than any ambassador could.

He said: “Two years ago, the Nigerian Economic Summit Group looked into a forecast of the Nigerian economy in the next five years, and the entertainment and creative industry was not considered.

“A booklet of about 200 pages was done and the creative industry was not considered. The value of the creative industry in Nigeria is beyond the country.

“Burna Boy has done a lot more for Nigerian national awareness than any ambassador that has been posted to America, the UK, or any other place. So Nigerian artists are creating national awareness and making other countries know about us than any ambassador would have done.”
