  • Why Nigerian youths are poor – Comedian

Ace comedian, Atunyota Akporobomerere, popularly known as Ali Baba, has lamented the lack of “passion for success” in Nigerian youths.

The comedian said this absence of passion for success explained why youths are unable to identify and harness business opportunities around them.

He noted that while the nation’s youths are always quick to demonstrate their strong passion for being fans of English Premier League (EPL) side, Arsenal and other foreign football clubs, when it has to do with sports, they rarely do same working hard to become wealthy or successful.

Ali Baba spoke Abeokuta, Ogun State, at the conclusion of a Youth Convention with the theme: “Ogun Youths: Exploring New Frontiers.”

The comedian, who was a guest speaker at the event packaged by Ogun State government, said comedy and poetry are goldmine waiting to be tapped by the youths.

He recalled that when he started his career as a stand -up comedian in 1987, people never saw prospect in it, adding that 10 years after, he received his first N1.6m cheque after performing in a show.

He said his story has since become success after success as a stand- up comedian, boasting that “comedians earned more than musicians because it is a one person thing and does not require an office, team work and instrument.”

ALI BABA TO HELP 10 CHILDLESS COUPLES

WITH a promise to have 10 couples go through free fertility treatment, notable comedian, Ali Baba, has just added medical help to his comic therapy.

The offering is being tied to his Alibaba January 1st Concert in conjunction with Fertility Treatment Support Foundation (FTSF) and Alibaba & Friends.

The affordability of the treatment is one of the most common causes for concern of the fertility-challenged couples and in order to keep the dreams of the fertility-challenged couples alive, Fertility Treatment Support Foundation (FTSF) was born.

The foundation has, over the years, provided free fertility screening and treatment to over 126 less privileged couples as her contribution to helping them realise their baby dreams.

Ali Baba’s involvement is expected to drive more corporate and individual support to the project, whereby Nordica, a fertility clinic, will provide free comprehensive fertility assessment to 20 selected couples out of which the 10 will be further selected.

Reports say Ali Baba was inspired to support the cause when he walked into Nordica and was moved by the emotional outpour of a woman, who just went through a successful embryo transfer after failed attempts from two cycles of in vitro fertilization (IVF).

IVF is an assisted reproductive technology (ART); a process of fertilization by manually combining an egg and sperm in a laboratory dish, and then transferring the embryo to the uterus.

Immediately the news was broken that the transfer had been successful and that she is confirmed pregnant, Ali Baba was touched by the uncontrollable emotional outpour that followed.

“Yes, this is more often the kind of scenario we witness regularly at our center when couples especially women who have undergone successful fertility treatment and embryo transfer receive the news that they would soon be holding their babies to complete their family dream”, said, Dr. Abayomi Ajayi, Medical Director at Nordica Fertility Centre, Lagos.

According to Dr Ajayi, the gesture by Ali Baba will go a long way to help the selected lucky couples with fertility challenges to have the much needed opportunities to be screened, treated and offered IVF to complete their families.

To participate in the process, he said, fertility challenged couples are to send a two-minute video of their fertility journey from their regular phone number registered on Whatsapp or a short story of their fertility journey of not more than 250 words to 0906 795 4727 on Whatsapp or via email to info@ftsfnigeria.org.

The content of the video and/or short story must include how long the couple have been married, their names, ages and email address.

The minister was optimistic that the partnership with TEF will help to reposition the creative industries in Nigeria.

“The MoU contained details of how we will work together to execute our partnership,” he said.

  • #ONELIFELIVETHEM CAMPAIGN: Ali Baba, two others as new brand Influencers

#ONELIFELIVETHEM CAMPAIGN: Ali Baba, two others as new brand Influencers

ONCE Rémy Martin Cognac launched its #OneLifeLiveThem campaign, a project that celebrates individual’s multi-talents last year; the brand has showcased different individuals that embody the brand DNA. Next in line are three strong celebrities; Arese Ugwu, Japheth Omojuwa and Ali Baba who have been considered by the brand as new brand Influencers.

The campaign tagline, One Life/Live Them, the grammatical imbalance notwithstanding, identifies that today’s consumers are not defined by one talent or skill, but are multi-faceted and should be applauded for their many passions.

Thus, the campaign encourages consumers to explore and celebrate all their talents. “It is a call to live richer, larger lives, to expand the horizon and seize all the wonderful opportunities that life can offer, beyond the one-dimensional paths that former generations could have embraced,” said the project promoters in a statement.

Arase Ugwu is a personal finance expert, author, thought leader and power babe. Arese is the Founder of Smart Money Africa, a personal finance platform for the African millennial. She is also the author of The Smart Money Woman: An African girl’s journey to financial freedom; a fictional personal finance book with smart money lessons. As a contributor to one of the leading newspapers, the host of two personal finance shows, – “Your Life Your Money”, and a co-host for “Analyse This” on Ndani TV, she has helped shape the new narrative on personal finance in the media.

Japeth Omojuwa is a public speaker, political expert, ideologist and mastermind. Thus, one can safely say that Japheth is a reflection of his name which means enlargement in Greek. As a man with these attributes, Omojuwa who was named among Africa’s top “50 Movers and shakers” by Switzerland’s Credit Suisse, has truly enlarged his life to be a multidimensional one, turning it all to a lifestyle.

For popular comedian, Atunyota Alleluya Akporobomerere, popularly called Ali Baba, some may also know him as a motivational speaker, but not many know he is a photographer and petrol head – indeed, there are quite a few men in all of history whose works resonate with such perfection and excellence that they actually need no introduction wherever it is they find themselves. The “Grandfather of Nigerian Stand-up Comedy” Ali Baba is undoubtedly one of such men.

Ali Baba was born in Warri, Delta State to the Royal family of Agbarha Otor. He acquired his first degree in Religious Studies & Philosophy from Bendel State University (now known as the Ambrose Alli University), Ekpoma. But, it was during his time on campus here that he discovered his first passion and purpose in life: making people laugh.

After making his professional debut on television shows in 1991 on the NTA network, with several cameo appearances on radio as well, Ali Baba dared to take his craft beyond being seen as a jester and irrelevant to being professionally acclaimed and accepted. He believed stand-up comedy could thrive as a profession in Nigeria, and he dared to stand up for his convictions.

Today, after a career spanning well over two decades, he is well acclaimed and respected home and abroad. Over the years, he has also delved into his other passions: photography, painting, writing, and motivational speaking. He is also an accomplished entrepreneur who has a strong flair for creating and developing ideas. In his words: “The value of your creativity can only be defined by you. Your creativity pushes your value proposition.”

In 2012, he was given the privilege of ringing the Year End Closing Bell of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, the first comedian to do so. A car lover as well as an avid reader, he also spends a lot of his time involved in mentoring and motivating young men and women.

Promoters say Rémy Martin remains committed to the core principles and values that its founders used to establish the company more than 290 years ago. These include supporting the community, highlighting skills and revealing the talents of people and nature, honoring craftsmanship.

  • Memories, laughter at Ali Baba’s Jan 1 show

Memories, laughter at Ali Baba’s Jan 1 show

Despite having the popular Headies holding almost at the same time, this year’s edition of the annual Ali Baba January 1 Concert came in grand style, leaving in its wake, memories of a performance that will linger.

It was a harvest of comic performances, as colleagues and mentees of the foremost comedian graced the occasion as guest performers.

Ali Baba who made an appearance on stage dressed like an army officer, said it is to remember the past heroes; men and women who laid down their lives protecting the country as their duty required.

He also noted that he would have been a military officer, if he had passed the exam, in 1984, when his father got him the form to attend Nigeria Defence Academy, NDA, Kaduna.

“I remember leaving Command Secondary School, Ipaja, 1984, in my dad’s green Volkwagen Igala.  Along that Agege Motor road, my dad handed me a brown envelope with the forms that he had gotten for me from NDA, Kaduna… And I humbly told him, I was not going to no NDA… Forget the long arm of the law. My dad’s slap is the law. I was eventually to resume for registration in Kaduna, six days later. I couldn’t go any earlier. The swelling on my left eye, when my dad and I were having the “go to NDA or not” conversation, had to come down significantly. By the 5th day I could see clearly… Especially from my dad’s point of view. And he was right. But due to some divine miracle, I failed all the tests, recruitment o! Fitness o! Academic o! Civics studies o! Health o! Eye test SEF o! That’s how I did not make it into NDA,” he posted on Instagram.

“To all our fallen heroes and members of the armed forces dead and alive… We honour you for your selfless service to our country. And to those sent to the battle front with less to fight more… Thanks for your unshaken commitment to protect us in spite of the little protection you get,” he added.

As part of the activities lined up for the night, comedians took turns reviewing major events of the year and roast-toast some selected popular personalities.

Some celebrities at the event include Richard Mofe Damijo, Rita Dominic, Ayo Makun, Cobhams, Teju Babyface, Timi Dakolo, OC Ukeje and Chi gurl.

The highlight of the2016 edition was finding the winner of Alibaba Spontaneity competition. The 12 contestants have jostled four times in 2015 to show their innate ability to make audiences laugh spontaneously. The eventual winner, D1, went home with a brand new car, a contract that will see him draw a monthly salary in 2016 and a chance to intern with any comedian of his choosing.

The comedian also added colour to the event by giving out a pack of four piece socks, which had his picture on it as New Year gift token to all the men on the premium tables.

Another thing that made the event to be different was the dress code, which the Baba described as a class act performance event.

COME Sunday, November 1, a Non Profit Organisation, Project Asha, will hold its first empowering day and award night at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

According to Mr Steve Robinson, the event which will be headlined by top entertainers in the entertainment industry will feature appearances and speeches by international personalities. According to him, proceeds from the sales of the tickets will be used to support the cause of the project, which he says has helped quite a number of young teenage girls from the street go back to school and also get enrolled in skill acquisition programmes.

Speaking at a press conference recently, at Hope Studio, Ikeja, Steve noted that he did not allow his disability to stand as a hindrance to who he is today. He says that he desires to help others achieve their dreams if given the chance.

“I have soft bones. That is the reason I am using a support. But I didn’t allow that stop me from reaching where I want to be. I just came in; I used my personal money to pay for my ticket. That is to show the passion I have for this project, which I joined two years ago. Overseas, entertainers come together to organise shows and concerts to help the less privileged. The money generated is sent to Africa. What if we do it here ourselves, we won’t need their funds,” he opined.

He also revealed that though the award night has been held in London, this will be the maiden edition in Nigeria.

Among the artistes who will be treating guest to a night of fun are Ali Baba, Gordons, Oke Bakassi, Ozzy Bosco, Buchi, Timi Dakolo and Toby Grey. The event will be anchored by Princess and MC Bambino, with Chief Mrs. Caroline Danjuma, Ogee Robinson, Vweta Chadwick, and Segun Manuel, expected to speak on Women Empowerment and Child Education.

  • Ali Baba frowns at ‘indecent’ dressing

Ali Baba frowns at ‘indecent’ dressing

A lot has been said about the current trend of women baring their cleavage in the name of fashion, and veteran comedian Ali Baba seems to be deeply disturbed by the trend.

He tweets: “I have nothing against you dressing the way you like, but when you go above board, I am forced to ask, if she has a boyfriend; if she has advisers; if she has values? . . . But remember as African men, we do not like to eat food that is not covered. . . It’s unhygienic and unethical. But then again, it’s her body, wetin concern me? I may be wrong sha!”

Reacting to the comedian’s position, a fan said; “I understand you but there is relativity on the issue . . . Benin women baring their breasts is a perceived curse, in South African society, they have days when women go out with their breasts exposed, and on the day their king wants to choose a bride in full glare of the world. . . Because you see it as bad doesn’t make it so, it only shows the relativity in the way people see things.”

Ali Baba retorted, “Don’t differ to what you don’t know. Do you realize that it’s a curse when women go naked in protest? And do you recall that it’s only in extreme cases that women bare their breasts in public? “

The conversation continued with many buying into the argument of the comedian.

Among the entertainers at the event are D’banj, 2Face, Adewale Ayuba, Waje, Omawumi, Bez, Yemi Alade, Blackmagic, DJ Cuppy, Dj Cass, Basorge, Bovi, Tee A, Kofi, Yaw, Okey Bakassi, Seyi Law, Gbenga Adeyinka, Reuben, Senator, Mc Abbey, Egos, Bash, Peteru, The Don, Damola, Funny Bone, Mandy, Chigor and Helen.

The concert which pundits have adjudged as the mother of all shows had several wow moments. It kicked off in a never-seen-before roundtable discussion, dwelling on issues that everyone was familiar with. The issues ranged from politics to sports and major events that made headlines in the year past. No fewer than 12 top comedians participated in the ‘Roast and Toast’ segment, throwing jabs at some eminent personalities from different walks of life.

Some of the Jabs that will resonate with the guests for a long time to come include the ones on Hon Patrick Obahiagbon, Joseph Mbu, Labaran Maku, Doyin Okupe,  Reuben Abati, Aminu Tambuwal, Asari Dokubo, Iyiola Omisore, Stella Oduah and Dele Momodu among others.

He also took a jab at Iyiola Omisore, referring to one of his pictures where he was seen eating corn. “This is what they do when they want your votes. After the vote, they start taking cornflakes.”

However, there was a twist when Ali Baba himself was ‘roasted’ by Bovi who told everyone that Ali Baba was 2Face Idibia’s mentor, as he (Ali) is a serial divorcee who ended up marrying the same set of women twice. He also called Ali Baba a mother f..kr for marrying a mother of five at some point. It was the most amusing jab of the night, coming from a fellow colleague.

One of the best jabs would be that of Hon Patrick Obahiagbon. It was something everyone could resonate with, but coming from Reuben, it was one of the most interesting, as it referred to a time when he was campaigning for election. “After he finished, one of the guys asked his friends what he had been saying and that one said to him, e say make we no vote for am.” He also took a jab at Reuben Abati saying, “He used to write very well, but now, he chops very well.”

Different acts come on stage at intervals and do their individual business. But I believe Nigerians deserve much more. But most importantly, Nigerians need to be entertained with jokes woven around issues that everyone is familiar with. The issues will range from politics to sports and to major events that made headlines in the year past.”
