    Comedian Ali Baba shares important message to junior colleagues

    Veteran comedian Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, popularly known as Ali Baba has put together a message for younger colleagues, upcoming and aspiring comedians about succeeding in the industry

    Ali Baba, who is the host of the yearly Spontaneity for aspiring comedians to showcase their talents and win prizes, revealed what he usually shares with them during the competition.

    The comedian shared a video of love and humility on his Instagram page, with a lengthy message on rising in the comedy industry.

    He stated that the industry is big enough for anyone to excel without being a hindrance to another.

    He wrote: “Recently, someone asked me why I was organizing #alibabasspontaneity.

    He said he had to ask because he had attended 6 editions of #alibabasspontaneity and he could see the kind of support that should take the financial burden off me. From the beginning of #alibabasspontaneity, I had stated that the goal was to let upcoming comedians learn 5 things.

    “That spontaneity is the holy grail of Stand Up Comedy. That there is money in the comedy industry. That with the comedic talents they have, they can get themselves a car and many more things in life. That being a comedian is no walk in the park. And the most important reason, that the comic space is big enough for all and there was no need to try and stop other people’s shine.

    “I celebrate every colleague and help to promote all. As you can see, as shown by that 1st prize winner, the fact that the 2nd and 3rd position joined her on the 1st position stand, did not reduce her 1st position to 5th. Sharing in the joys and happiness of others is a trained mindset. A mindset that is achieved by knowing that the success of all, is the success of you as well.

    The 6th edition of Glam and Essence Award and Runway Show 2018 witnessed a turn-out of celebrities at the style event that was held at Red Carpet Event Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    Among the personalities that went home with Special Recognition Award were Lagos State First Lady, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, Ali Baba, Mrs Shade Okoya, Banke Meshida and Mrs. Data Okorodudu.

    Comedian Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, who is more popularly known as Ali Baba has said people should give him accolades as he has paid his dues.

    Dismissing the issue of some people saying he does not have an idea what they are passing through, he wrote. “These days, no one wants to know I was thrown out of 1004, just after Network News and went from there to live at the bar beach for nearly a year. Or squatted in #YabaTech for 1 semester. Or with Uncle Philip Efoguah, for nearly 2 Christmases.

    “And trekked from NTA Ahmadu Bello Way to Palmgrove depending… Or squatted with the present DG of SON. Osita, for nearly a year. Or with Abigail and Dr Pama in Ketu for some time. Or that I came to Lagos in 1990 with just a suitcase of books and 2 pairs of jeans and 2 brogues. With 2 shirts, 3 polo tshirts and 2 coats. Or that the only hope to survival then was God and @giantajaloko… Naaaaa… all people see now is Ali Baba is flaunting. Na your flaunting? Did you also say “chai Ali Baba has suffered” noooooo. Because the story you know is the good times one. So you think that’s all it is.

    On his meal method back then, “I laugh when some people come on my timeline and say, I talk because I don’t know what people are going through. You see that 0-1-0 code, or 0-0-1, or 0-0-0, 0-0-1, 0-0-0, 1-0-0… was a routine. Meanwhile it was not Ramadan. Let’s not compare notes. I’m a Notary Public when it comes to hard knocks. So when you see me now… give me some accolades”.

    After acquiring a degree from the then Bendel State University, Ekpoma in 1990, Ali Baba relocated to Lagos having discovered his comic talent in his third year in university. He had planned to return to Ekpoma to read Law but that was not to be, since he discovered he could make more money from making people laugh than defending them.

    In an effort geared towards celebrating men’s positive contributions to the society, notable celebrities have joined The Yetunde Bernard Company in a first-of-its-kind conference tagged: ‘The 21st Century Man: The Hustle is Real’.

    A Recall Conference for Men initiative, the maiden edition is a one-day live conference, scheduled to hold on April 28, 2018 at The Balmoral Convention Centre, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    Interestingly, the convener, a woman; Yetunde Bernard says the event is targeted at providing the African male – between age 20 and 45 – living in today’s urbane, competitive and demanding society with “insights and practical tools to enable him meet this evolving world with intention, clarity and a deep sense of tenacity.”

    Billed to speak at the city-center conference are notable celebrities like Alibaba, DJ Jimmy Jatt, Edi Lawani and Debola Williams.

    Speaking at the inauguration of the initiative, Bernard talks about numerous reasons by men in Africa should be celebrated.

    According to her, “Recall for Men is strictly for Africans because of our society is completely different. The African man is not like the every day’s man, his cultural is different, the tradition is different, the hustle and things he experience are different.

    Continuing, Bernard says, “As a woman, most issues that affect men have a greater impact on women as well because they are everywhere in our lives. We have them as fathers, husbands, boyfriends also as a son. We recognise that most African men were not taught how to manage their relations, manage their egos etc. they just assumed because is a man, he should be brave enough but men also need someone to discuss and interact their issues with.

    “So, to ease African male from all struggle of life, we are bringing organisations and delegates from around Africa to interact with thought leaders and learn how to leverage on the status of the African man to create productivity platforms on all fronts.”

    Olakunle Soriyan, Lead Strategist of the Recall Conference for Men describes the idea as an invasion of the norm. “It is designed specifically to serve as a resource point for men. Men have become the endangered species not because they have more challenges, but because they don’t speak about these challenges. This conference is to serve as a platform where men can converge and connect, sharing thoughts and ideas,” he says.

    Coming after his confession of working as a security guard in the United States because of financial constraints, actor Femi Ogedenbge has caught the attention of popular comedian Ali Baba, who says his respect for the actor is immeasurable.

    According to Ali Baba, the actor earned his respect for setting aside his ego to achieve greatness in life.

    “First off, let me say, my respect for this guy can’t be measured right now,” said the comedian on his Instagram page.

    “He has blown me away with his handling of the realities in his life. Some people know how to get through life, while others let life get to them. This is a man who put his ego and fame to the back, and faced reality. To make a better life for his family and himself. He did not believe the hype. You see, that is exactly the kind of society we are in. Someone who is doing an honest job is vilified and castigated. Even mocked. Just to drive traffic.

    “Then those who are involved in Yahoo Yahoo, kidnapping, 419, looting and taking loans from banks and refusing to pay back are celebrated. Think about it. Would we really have been happier if he was famous and his kids couldn’t feed? Or was thrown out of his apartment because he couldn’t pay rent? Would we have been ok seeing him jump Okada and keke napep? We like to see people who are famous looking rich.

    “Doesn’t matter how they do it. That’s pressure. Major pressure. That’s why people are forced to steal, turn to prostitution, carry drugs, go into politics and Rob the country blind… because our yardstick for measuring success is flawed to the floor. We only respect thieves. The undergraduate who works at a car wash during holidays is a loser. The one that decides to work as a bar tender or fuel pump attendant is a waste.”

    In a recent news report, Ogedengbe revealed that he relocated to the US in 2016 because of the hard times in the country while his family joined him in July, 2017.

    The year 2017 ended on a glorious note for Mo Abudu, the prominent media mogul and corporate amazon, just as 2018 began on an even more glorious note for her. The CEO of EbonyLife TV was honoured at the Ali Baba’s January 1 Concert held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    Abudu was honoured as the first woman in Africa to launch a Pan Africa TV channel. The award was presented to her by Dame Abimbola Fashola, wife of former Lagos State governor, and Dame Abimbola Fashola, top bank executive and Ali Baba’s wife.

    Abudu looked beautiful in a piece from Lanre DaSilva Ajayi’s SS18 The Grand Royal Collection. She was accompanied to the event by the trio of Ruth Osime, Pat Faniran and Marian Omatsone.

    It will be recalled that on Thursday, December 7, 2017, the Governing Council of the Institute of Directors Nigeria (IoDN), awarded Abudu the fellowship of the Institute of Directors as well as the 2017 IoD Entrepreneurial Award.

    A below-the-knee amputee battled poverty. Help came from a foundation. He got a wheelchair and regularly got food to nourish his spirit, body and soul. For reasons yet to be explained, he sold the wheelchair and preferred to torture himself. The foundation got wind of the development and struck him off the list of beneficiaries.

    He got angry and labelled the foundation and the ‘yeye’ man who got me angry enough to write this piece scammers.

    The ‘yeye’ man, who fought his way out of the poverty in Niger Delta to the exclusivity of NICON Town, did not take kindly to the amputee’s claim and declared that not everyone deserves kindness. He added a clincher: “A mind-set that does not know gratitude kills faster than hate.”

    It is for his posts such as this that I have decided to let his career go up in flames today.

    Welcome to the world of Ali Baba! Now, you know the man I am donating his career to the gods. It is not my fault. Let’s blame the ‘yeye’ man who packs so many talents into one body. He is a writer. He has done some fantastic photography. His poetry is in a class not a few believe only special poets belong. He also acts, motivates and hosts talk show.  The entrepreneur in him is of no mean stature.

    How can one man have all these talents and still does well? I am baffled and it is for this reason that I am deploying my writing skill to ‘finish’ the career of the one who lost his first and surname decades ago.

    Like Zaq in Helon Habila’s Oil on Water, he seems always interested in the greater meaning. I cannot tell if he left Niger Delta for Lagos with ‘unsettled emotions’ like Etiaba left New York in Maik Nwosu’s A Gecko’s Farewell.  But I can tell that where he comes from poverty dances ‘Makosa’ every minute. Many of his people live in houses made of wood and covered with palm frond, which must be changed from time to time as they wither away. So many children cannot go to school. Yet the oil of Nigeria’s prosperity is drilled in their domain. The majority dwells in hell; the minority in heaven.  It is like the people have sinned against their leaders, the men they elect to lead them.

    In some parts of the Niger Delta, they never see night. The multinational operating in these areas have their flow stations so close to homes and send out gas flares throughout the day. So, the only way to differentiate between night and day is to check their wrist watches.

    In many towns, oil pipelines are in the open. Often they burst or are burst and our soils and existence are damaged in the process.

    I can tell that this son of a soldier born in Warri but from Agbarha-Otor has risen from the flabby back of the Niger Delta to become an institution. Ask other comedians and they will tell you he is the king. Their king got me angry when, three days ago, he used his Instagram handle @alibabagcfr to explain to a follower the concept of his popular comic contest Spontaneity. The fighter in him once again returned to town. The post told me the time has come for a focus on this Niger Delta-born multi-talented soul who I have the feeling reads with the appetite of an astute scholar. He cherishes books as gifts and always celebrates people who buy him great books.

    For Ali Baba, keeping quiet when someone tries to rubbish you or what you stand for is not a virtue. Silence is not golden in such circumstances. You need to read his Instagram posts to understand what I mean.

    He also sees desperation in saying “I need just any job”. As far as he is concerned, only people who do not have value to add thread this path. Harvesters should not play the role of planters, he preaches.

    Hell came down when a contestant on the show who goes by the name Timelessaproko faulted the judges for writing her off as not being spontaneous. After leaving the show, she took to the social media to complain about how ‘padi-padi’ syndrome was killing every facet of Nigeria. She challenged Ali Baba to release the video of all the contestants so that the public would have the opportunity to judge.

    The ace comedian’s first response was to make her understand that it was his show and had the right to decide what standards to use. He followed up by releasing the video of her performance on the show. I watched the video, which Ali Baba released in three parts because Instagram could not take all at once. Like Ali Baba, there was nothing funny or spontaneous in her performance, except speaking Pidgin English is now considered funny and spontaneous.

    Enough of the fight! Ali Baba is much more. Ali Baba – who owns the Oniru Estate-based multi-purpose centre called Xqzmoir – stuns with almost all his Instagram posts. He has a brilliant knack for playing on words in ways that only an intelligent mind can. Do not mind the fact that this guy who is impatient with lazy minds ends almost all his posts with ‘what do I know?’

    If you doubt me, let me serve you some of his dishes. In a caption he did for pictures of a lady who was big and later became trim, he wrote: “I come from a family where we have big bones…Bone that thing.” Then in another caption on a picture of Nollywood actor Ufuoma McDermott in which her daughter was pushing her from behind, he wrote: “When your daughter’s got your back…The push is usually towards the pizza place or ice cream.”

    I still have more. Latest husband in town Banky W recently shared pictures of the stripes or cuts on his shoulder as a result of a skin cancer surgery he underwent. When Ali Baba posted this picture, this is what he wrote: “By HIS stripes you are healed…You will come back with better cutting edge songs and you will be carried shoulder high in all you do.”

    And please one more: The acronym of the names of Actor Funlola Aofiyebi-Raimi is FAR. A few days ago while wishing her a happy birthday, Ali Baba played on the acronym when he wrote: “I nearly missed it…happy birthday my friend from faaaaaaar back…” His posts give the impression he thinks deeply and reflectively before typing.

    This man – who does not believe two heads are better than one – has, for some time now, been on a campaign for monuments, such as those of Fela, Awolowo and so on to be moved to places where people can access and take pictures with them like we see abroad. He sees no sense in putting them in the middle of the road, barricading them and asking people not to cross the lawn. I totally buy the idea of this success story who believes two heads can only be better than one when they are two good heads. Can you beat that?

    My final take: Ali Baba’s is not a career that is about to go up in flames because he keeps re-inventing himself. With his Ali Baba Seriously on NTA, he has added another feather. Instead of going up in flames of fire, it will go up in flames of blessing and what do I know other than to tell Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, who is ‘just a comedian’, to continue to break a leg.

    A couple of Nigerian artistes will be joining other social media experts for #Social4Media, a one day training on social media ethics and practices holding.

    Set for November 21, among those scheduled for the training are Frank Donga, Ali Baba, M.I Abaga, Osagie Alonge, and Tosin Ajibade.

    Organized by PR agency, BHM in partnership with ID Africa and Plaqad Inc, the free training will be holding for bloggers, journalists, PR executives, developers and influencers.

    #Social4Media is aimed at helping media professionals sharpen their social media skills by providing them the training and tools to create, edit and distribute videos, connect with one another, increase website traffic and video views, harvest and interpret analytics and source for news content, among others.

    The event will feature ten different sessions to be facilitated by top industry experts and thought leaders.

    Other foremost experts expected at the training are Alibaba Akpobome, Tomiwa Aladekomo, Ized Uanikhehi, John Adewusi, Yemi Adamolekun, Femi Falodun and Ayeni Adekunle.

  • ‘Ali Baba and the 40 thieves!’

    We are not about the win the war against corruption and official brigandage in Nigeria. Not with the theatrics in the hallowed chambers of the Senate and veiled attack on the President to abandon charges against prominent politicians and principal officers of the House facing corruption charges. Our senators approach issues of state like buccaneers and gangsters trying to conquer territory and loot every valuable along their path. They employ political brinkmanship of intimidation and cajoling of the Federal Executive Council giving the impression of preserving the sanctity of the separation of power. They ignore the sublime and serious issues of governance chasing shadows.
    Just the same way the some members of the Federal Executive Council carry on as if they are special breeds from the outer space. The face-off between Senate of the Federal Republic and the contumacious, self opinionated, cocky and arrogant imperial Comptroller General of Customs, Hammed Ali is in bad taste. No doubt, it was a gross failure and incompetence to attempt to collect duties from vehicles already in the country whether smuggled in through the porous borders usually by men of the Nigerian Customs. It was a good dinner when Ali appeared in the hallowed chambers without uniform of the Nigerian Customs Service.
    The Senate has found the Achilles heel of the APC-led government and is not allowing the opportunity to be frittered away. It has decided to swoop on the President’s men; rejecting the confirmation of the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, inviting Professor Itse Sagay to appear before it for the comment he made about the Senate and of course the call for the investigation and removal of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. All these are under current for the inflexible attitude towards the travails of some principal officers of the Senate their cahoots undergoing either investigation or trial of alleged criminal infractions.
    The antecedent President Muhammadu Buhari is very well known to be brash to the finesse of the rule of law and unorthodox. He is not in the mould of a typical politician; almost naive on brinkmanship hence he has almost lost measured control of the National Assembly even though his party is in the majority. Beside the campaign against the insurgents in the North-east, the APC-led government lacks rhythm as the nation is on dire straits. For the senators, I am not sure that wearing uniform should be fundamental as they can always make law to stop non-career person from being made a Comptroller General. Hammed Ali is a political appointee and to compel him to wear uniform is balderdash and comparing him with the former boss of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Major General Haladu Hananiya who wore the FRSC uniform is misplaced. To engage in a duel with the custom boss on issue of uniform over a more serious issue is to suffer from acute complex of pedestrian nature.
    Sincerely, there are only few senators in the 8th Senate that carry themselves with the dignity of that office to earn respect from members of the public. Respect is earned not by the office but by character of the person who occupies the office. As the fight is getting dirtier, it is obvious that the APC is at war with itself and everything points to the fact that the party is on life-support as they calibrate towards 2019.
    If we think that Nigeria can be changed without anybody being hurt and without taking some extreme measures it will be a huge joke and we will continue to be in the jungle. The 8th Senate appears to be of the worst grade in our democratic history, lacking in principle and organisational discipline. For their personal ambition, they pull the carpet off their party in the election of Principal Officers of the National Assembly. They gravitate from there to fight over committees and purchase of expensive vehicles for their use rather than face the business of making good laws for the country. Next was to make laws to remove the prosecutorial power of the EFCC and whittle the power of the Code of Conduct Tribunal because the leadership of the Senate are facing either trial or investigation by these government departments and about half of the members fear that they have one issue or the other to hide. When Honourable Abdulmumin Jibrin fingered the National Assembly for budget padding, they suspended him. Next was the turn of Senator Ali Ndume who raised alarm over imported bullet proof vehicles for senators and academic record and credentials of one of its members who has turned the hallowed chambers into theatre of the absurd.
    What a Senate! Is this the National Assembly that can take Nigeria on the part of growth and development? My worry is that public affairs analysts, commentators, Civil Society Organisations and NGOs have not found it necessary to intervene and take the National Assembly to task over the state of the nation which appear not to matter to them. No individual or groups have demonstrated the capacity to mobilize for a peaceful protest over the failure of the government and its institutions to improve on the lots of the people. We seem content to watch the histrionics of the jesters and clowns in Ali Baba and the 40 thieves which our state has become.

    The renowned comedian, Ali Baba, has said that he started making his millions as a stand-up comedian in the late 90’s when the profession was still in its infancy in the country.

    Ali Baba told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos that comedy business started paying off when people knew little about the profession.

    The comedian spoke against the backdrop of an award conferred on him by The Verdant Zeal Quantum Awards at the prestigious Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, on March 22.

    “When I got my first endorsement and I was paid about N82,000, someone who saw me with the cheque asked what I do for a living and when I said I am a comedian he was baffled.

    “The person did not even have an idea that I had got an endorsement from Guinness Nigeria Plc that was worth about N1.2 million. We don’t need to shout over this.

    “The pay from show business is pronounced because some of the younger ones now flaunt their wealth unduly,’’ he said.

    Ali Baba added that he was now on another platform and not the regular one people used to see him on.

    “I still crack jokes but people won’t see me on the platform they are used to.

    “I will be 30 years on stage next year, so I have moved on from the platform people used to see me. I have to leave the platform for upcoming actors.

    “It is like a bank structure where there is a cashier attending to costumers, after 20 years you don’t expect to see that cashier still counting money behind the counter.

    “When I started, it was only Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), now we have many television stations and radio stations so the platform is bigger and wider,’’ the ace comedian said.

    Ali Baba told NAN that he was more into mentoring budding entertainers on the business side of showbiz.

    “The thing I do is that I teach by example, a lot of them have watched me perform; professionalism is key and talent is important.

    “It is important that you develop your talent, when talent becomes a service that is when people will require it. Nobody will buy a talent if it is not for service.

    “I teach other comedians to be humble, focused and think ahead. I expect that others should beat my strides.

    “My strides are like foundation for a lot of comedians to grow with but with recent technology, the platform is now wider and accommodating,’’ he said.

    Ali Baba said that the current lull in the show business should be a wakeup call for entertainers to be more creative with the profession.

    “As a comedian, you need a lot of information which is why we have a lull in the industry now, people don’t create jokes anymore, but are looking for people’s joke.

    “It is a wake up for emerging market and for comedians to improve on their act every time and read.

    “Once you have information you will grow, so, I teach a lot of them to seek for information which is the only way to sustain them in the profession,’’ he said.
