Alia demonstrated transparency, honesty, fairness with FG palliatives distribution – Onjeh

The All Progressives Congress (APC) 2023 senatorial candidate for Benue South, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has commended Governor Hyacinth Alia, over what he termed the honest, fair and equitable distribution of the palliatives released by the Federal Government to cushion the effects of the policy on fuel subsidy removal.

Onjeh spoke in Otukpo, while supervising the continuation of the distribution of FG palliatives in Benue South.

Onjeh, who stated that he was in Otukpo to supervise the activity to ensure the palliatives get to the targeted indigenes of Benue South, said the gesture was an initiative of the President Tinubu-led Federal Government, which Governor Alia has painstakingly implemented across Benue State to the benefit of its teeming citizens.

“Governor Alia a Governor of the people, with the people and for the people. There has never been a bountiful distribution of palliatives in Benue State as being done under his watch. This noble activity today is a clear demonstration of this fact, and just one amongst the several other channels that were used for the distribution,” Onjeh stated.

While the relief materials distributed at the event were 1000 bags of corn and 300 bags of rice, all weighing 50 kg valued at N65million; Onjeh stated that the beneficiaries were the less privileged, the widows, the orphans, the poorest of the poor as well as the vulnerable members of the society.

The distribution, according to Onjeh, transcends political boundaries, as members of all parties and even the non-partisans, benefitted equitably from the largesse.

“In fact, Governor Alia carried the entire Benue along in the distribution of the palliatives,” stated Onjeh.

The former Chairman, Governing Board of PRODA, Enugu, reminded the gathering that in his message of appreciation to the Benue South people for their support during the last general elections, he informed them that he would continue to promote and serve their best interests in any capacity he finds himself in the future; adding that the current assignment was one of such opportunities, and he intends to discharge the mandate given to him by the State Governor diligently and optimally.

Onjeh further informed the motley crowd of excited beneficiaries at the venue of the distribution that he was reliably informed that the Federal Government has also released well over N150m to each federal legislator, to enable them procure additional palliatives for distribution to the masses in their various constituencies during the yuletide season.

Onjeh further noted that while some federal legislators may take the full credit for such palliatives, others are not even magnanimous enough at heart to judiciously use the all funds released by the Federal Government to purchase the relief materials while there were those that only ensure that the palliatives get to their families, friends and political associates, to the exclusion of the teeming masses that truly deserve the relief.

“We hope some selfish politicians and public office holders will not hoard such palliatives in secret warehouses across the country, with the ignoble intent of using them to entice voters during their next political campaigns as was done with COVID-19 palliatives,” Onjeh stated.

He asked the National Assembly members distributing palliatives to their constituents to also do well to tell the citizens exactly where they got the support for the palliatives from as that  will encourage the citizens to be patriotic enough to support Mr. President in his policy drive and policy direction.

According to Onjeh, in the subsidy regime, only a few people were benefitting at the expense of the generality of Nigerians.

Onjeh stated that as soon as the Federal Government had given an indication of its policy direction, it behooves every political actor to be patriotic and loyal enough to the cause, so that Nigeria can get it right.

He added that if all the palliatives released so far by the Federal Government were truly getting to the masses, and in the full measures released, the suffering across the land would have been tremendously alleviated.

He further advised the Federal Government that in releasing such palliative funds to federal lawmakers or political office holders in the future, it shouldn’t be a carte blanche but a bold tag should be placed on it.

“The details of what should be done with the funds should be spelt out, so that even the average electorate can be aware of what to expect, and therefore be able to hold their elected officials to account,” Onjeh advised.

On the importance of the removal of fuel subsidy, he stated that the money that will be saved in the process will help to  advance our  national infrastructure, to aid our development in the area of building more road and rail networks, power plants to boost electricity supply, and other social amenities that would boost local production and attract more direct foreign investment into the country in the long run.

The former student activist and President of NANS advised the people not to be deceived by the antics of egocentric public officials who may wish to take full credit for the palliatives released to them during the yuletide season, adding that the relief materials actually belong to the people; having been released by the federal government; and the public officials were only discharging the mandate of conveying the items to the right people at the grassroots.

Speaking further, Onjeh commended the transparent nature of the distribution of the palliatives in Benue South, adding that in order to ensure that the relief materials truly get to the intended beneficiaries at the grassroots, the distribution was done using the platform of the Onjeh Volunteers’ Network (OVN), which has visible structures in all the nooks and crannies of Benue South.

“The choice of using the Onjeh Volunteers’ Network (OVN) for the distribution is to ensure that the palliatives get to the very doorsteps of the masses at the grassroots.

“Recall that OVN has been in existence in Benue South since my 2016 re-run election against former Senate President, David Mark, only that its focus and objectives has been modified and it is now operating strictly as a charity organization,” Onjeh stated.

While urging the people to make the most judicious use of the relief materials released to them, Onjeh wished the entire Benue South people a very happy and prosperous New Year.

Benue Commissioner of Water Resources and Environment,  Hon. Ugwu Odoh, appreciated President Tinubu and Governor Alia, for their kindness and support in providing enough grains and rice for the poorest of the poor, the orphans, widows, civil servants, pensioners, and all homes in Benue for the Christmas celebration.

“This is the first time in history that Benue people are celebrating Christmas with joy, happiness and smiles. It’s shocking that a senatorial candidate in Zone C, Com. Dan Onjeh, is distributing two trailers load of 50kg assorted grains along with cash support, while serving National Assembly members are busy distributing 1kg and 2 Kg of rice and in most cases, not even sharing anything to the people,” stated Hon. Ugwu.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Ode Agbo, a native of Otukpo, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and Governor Alia for extending the kind gesture to Benue South during the festive season. He also thanked Com. Daniel Onjeh for offering himself for the selfless service to his people.

New Year: Gov Alia pardons 12 inmates

Gov. Hyacinth Alia of Benue has granted a State Pardon to 12 inmates serving various jail terms at the Federal Maximum Correctional Centre Makurdi.

Alia granted the pardon on Monday when he visited the Nigerian Correctional Centre Makurdi,  the Benue capital.

He charged the pardoned inmates to be of good behaviour as they reintegrated into society and made use of the skills they acquired while in prison to better their lot.

He explained that they were granted pardon based on his administration’s desire to offer the best to the people, and lamented that most of the inmates were young persons who ordinarily should not be anywhere near the prison.

He disclosed that among those to be granted state pardon was one Dennis Yogbo, who was dismissed from the state Civil Service about 28 years ago.

He said with the pardon, Yogbo’s dismissal had also been converted to termination of appointment.

“Give your society the very best. And as for the gentleman whose dismissal has been converted to termination of appointment, don’t take any elements of life for granted; demonstrate your newness into your society.

“This should not be home for them. I was quite shocked to see the faces of many young people here, where there are a total of 525 inmates including 25 females, one with a baby, while some came in with pregnancy.” he said.

Alia said his decision was based on the recommendation of the Benue State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy headed by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Fidelis Mnyim.

Earlier in his remarks, the attorney general and commissioner for justice and public order  said the advisory council recommended those that were granted pardon in line with Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution for offences they committed against the state.

Mnyim explained that the inmates granted pardon were from Makurdi, Otukpo and Gboko correctional facilities.

The State Comptroller, Nigeria Correctional Service, Mrs Mary Oche acknowledged the efforts of the government in ensuring that inmates did  not stay in the correctional centres unnecessarily.

Oche also commended the governor for providing transportation fares to the inmates to get to their respective destinations and enjoy the New year with their loved ones.

Responding on behalf of the freed inmates, Barnabas Apav, thanked the  governor for the gesture and pledged that henceforth, they would be of good behaviour as they got back to the society.

Also Dennis Yogbo, who was granted state pardon, said he had been in prison for 28 years, until God sent Alia to come to his rescue, following the recommendation of the council , after reviewing his case and converting his dismissal to the termination.

Alia to Akume: you are encyclopedia of Benue politics

Governor Hyacinth Alia has described George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) as the political living encyclopedia of Benue politics.

Alia stated this at Wannue during the reception to mark Akume’s 70th birthday anniversary and homecoming at Tarka Local Government Area of the state.

He said God has blessed Akume in several ways especially with the knowledge of Benue politics, adding that he was the maverick of politics in the state.

He also described Akume as the political lifestyle of Benue politics as he encouraged people to always come to the SGF to study state politics.

He said Akume has the love of the state at heart, saying that the ex-governir has already paid his dues and deserves all the respect.

Alia stated: “Today we celebrate a living political encyclopedia. He has paid his dues and deserved all our respects. He is the maverick of our politics.”

Reacting to the appeal of Bishop Isaac Dugu earlier during his sermon, Governor Alia admitted that the Bishop touched on the core issues that bordered on the development of the state.

He enjoined all NASS members, state Assembly members, and all stakeholders to join him in supporting the SGF to succeed so that together they would build a better State.

He noted: “I invite you all to join me to join Sen Akume to take Benue to a greater height. It is all about the State and not about us.

“For those who want to sow seeds of discord will not succeed for the things that unite us are greater than things the  that seek to divide us, “he said

In his remarks during the thanksgiving Service, President, Bola Tinubu commended the SGF for his contributions to the country on nation-building.

  • No rift between me and SGF, says Alia

No rift between me and SGF, says Alia

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has described the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume as a national pride.

He personally welcomed Akume, a former governor, to Benue State, for his 70th birthday, saying that he is the father of Benue.

The governor also dispelled rumours of a rift between him and the SGF.

He said: “I want to unambiguously debunk the circulating rumours of discord between the SGF and myself. These speculations exist solely in the imaginative realm of opportunists, instigators of turmoil, and merchants of mischief who thrive on chaos. The said fracas is only a figment of the imagination crafted by those who seek to profit from crisis.

“For pockets of disenchanted members of our party here in the state, we are already in talks to address various areas of discontent. However, while we try to do so, we shall ensure that the will of the masses who voted us into office, prevails. This is because we are determined not to distort the organic relationship between the people and our government.

“I therefore  enjoin each and every one of us to dismiss such baseless notions and focus on the shared commitment to truth, unity, and progress that defines our collective journey.”

At a symposium in Makurdi, the state capital, to mark the birthday, the governor described the SGF as a political colossus, a democratic patriarch, and a man whom upon the birthing of the Fourth Republic in Nigeria, laid the foundation for successive leadership in Benue.

He said: “We are gathered here today not merely to acknowledge the passage of time, but to celebrate a leader—the state pillar of our great party; a man who has over the years, risen steadily from being a political creation to a creator in our political landscape.”

Represented by his deputy, Dr. Sam Ode, the governor said Akume’s birthday has become a platform for discussing good governance and national cohesion.

He said Akume’s birthday should always be marked in the State with a colloquium.

Alia thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for giving Akure a unique opportunity to offer diligent service to the country.

He also thank the President for apointing other notable indigenes of the state into leadership positions to contribute their quota to national development.

He said it is a clear demonstration that Benue is seriously being considered in the scheme of things.

Alia commended Akume for ensuring that since the inception of the Fourth Republic, he has not only developed a whole generation of leaders, but also allowed them to develop ideas.

He described the former governor as a tolerant leader who is ever ready to bow to superior argument.

Alia added: “While some may regard that as foolishness or a weakness, I personally regard it as the greatest virtue of a true democrat who is open-minded and flexible in the marketplace of ideas.

“In Nigeria, only few individuals dedicate their political missions to the advancement of common good. Among these rare individuals stands the Retired Permanent Secretary, a two-term governor of Benue State, a three-term Senator of the Federal Republic, a former Honourable Minister for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, and presently the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

“For over two decades, Sen. Akume has exemplified, both in rhetoric and action, a steadfast commitment to Social Compassion and Welfare Advocacy.

“This political philosophy, deeply entrenched in the essence of well-being and a profound reverence for human dignity, has served as a guiding principle throughout his tenure in public service, from his days as Permanent Secretary through to date as Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

“His enduring commitment to these ideals underscores an uncompromising belief in politics that places the welfare and dignity of every individual at the forefront. It is this principled approach that shapes his legacy, marking him as a leader dedicated to the enhancement of our society.”

Alia said that within his short period in office as SGF, Akume has played a pivotal role in the ratification of  federal projects/intervention programmes in Benue.

He said: “The approval by Mr President for the establishment of the ‘Renewed Hope Shelter Programme’ pilot scheme in the state, aimed at relocating IDPs back to their various ancestral homes, was partly possible through your instrumentation.

“This is not to mention several other intervention programmes ranging from provision of relief materials to flood victims in the state, to approval of funds for palliatives to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal.

Tendering his stewardship, Alia said: “With particular regards to palliatives, may I respectfully inform you that my administration decided to use some of the funds to cushion the effect through the procurement of 100 buses which have already been handed over to the state-owned Benue Links Transport Company, so as to ease the movement of people across the state at the most affordable rates possible. As I speak, Benue commuters are already all smiles, thanks to that transportation palliative.

“More so, we have flagged off the distribution of grains and food items as additional palliatives, to households across the 276 council wards in the state.”

The governor said politicking is over, stressing that his administration has buckled up and begun work, with a view to bringing forth dividends of democracy to the people, based on the social contract.

He said apart from boosting agricultural activities across the state through the timely provision of fertilizers to farmers at subsidized rates, his administration has begun the construction of 16 strategic roads within Makurdi metropolis, with plans of extending same in due course to other parts of the state.

Furthermore, while ensuring prompt payment of workers’ and pensioners’ emoluments as at when due, we are also currently in talks with a number of companies and private organisations with a view to resuscitating all the moribund industries across the state, as well as building new ones to boost socio-economic growth.

The health sector is also a priorty as we have already engendered several reforms, appointments and rehabilitation/opening of some public health facilities/centres across the state, including the Muhammadu Buhari Mother and Child Hospital, amongst others. As I speak, our attention is being shifted to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, where radical reforms are already underway to deliver on our promise of provision of adequate and affordable healthcare services.

The “Light-up Makurdi” streets light project is ongoing. In addition, our administration in collaboration with Mircosoft, has already sponsored 10,000 youths who are undergoing ICT-related training.

He added: “While we are focused on attracting new investments to the State, our administration is making case to be considered for 13 percent derivative given to states with mineral deposits from the Federation Account. By this, we are optimistic that again, you will use your good office to help drive the initiative.

“In the area of security, collaborations with various security agencies and formations in the state have been epic, all geared towards ensuring lasting peace and tranquility. Various stakeholders as well as the civil society, have also been very cooperative in the business of peace and security.”

Be very wary of them at this crucial period as they have sadly failed to jointly sponsor even one newsworthy bill in the whole of the last six months, but have rather resorted to poisoning your minds with hate in the bid to divide and conquer.”
