BREAKING: Gov Alia displaying dictatorial tendencies – Benue NASS members

A few days after the crisis resolution in Rivers State, a similar scenario is playing out in Benue State as members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Assembly caucus accused Governor Hyacinth Alia of displaying dictatorial tendencies and poor leadership.

Senator Titus Zam, the caucus chairman, addressed a news conference on Thursday, December 21, stating that Governor Alia had joined forces with the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to destroy the APC in Benue State.

The caucus accused the governor of ignoring the party’s preferences in all his decisions, appointing his preferred candidates instead, and disregarding the National Assembly members from the state.

They accused him of running a one-man show as governor of the state and lacking a blueprint for the development of the state.

We want ‘absolute peace’ in Benue, Alia begs military

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has appealed to the military high command to restore ‘absolute peace’ in the state.

This is just as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, pledged that efforts are on to ensure all Internally Displaced Persons (IPD) camps are closed and all IDPs return home.

Alia made the appeal yesterday after a meeting with the CDS at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja. He told reporters that

Benue State remains vulnerable because four of its local government areas share borders with Cameroon. ‘Hence, the reason for asking the military to come to our aid’.

The governor said the government requested that Forward Operation Bases (FOB) be established in some strategic locations where criminals have turned to hideouts and some areas where solid minerals have been discovered.

He said: “We came to congratulate the CDS for his ascension on this position. We know his track records, and we’re convinced like from Benue, he’s the right to, at this specific time to take us further into the security we seek in the state. We came to also to appreciate what they have been doing.

“The Army has done for so much for the state. We went through different stages for quite some time. But, since we came in, the state has experienced relative peace, and that is the way forward, and we will continue to look forward to more of that.

“We came also to appreciate them. Operation Whirl Stroke is at home with us, and they are in the trenches, but like Oliver Twist, we came to ask for more, we came to present some more prayers, because we want not just relative peace, but absolute peace. The peace in the form that will enable our IDPs return to their ancestral farmland, and for everyone to sleep with their eyes closed. So we’re quite happy he received us very graciously and accepted the prayers we also made.”

The governor maintained that the recent discovery of solid minerals has made the state prone to security challenges, adding that he wants all farmers to be able to return to their family lands.

“Life is just coming back with the support of the military via the Operation Whirl Stroke, and they’re doing great work, but we want some more to be done. We’re praying for Forward Operation Bases (FOB). Four local government areas share border with the Cameroon. Benue State is one of the very top states with solid minerals and many more are being discovered. That, to some degree, has the potential of rendering us vulnerable.

Palliative: Alia kicks-off distribution in Benue

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, has hailed the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led federal government for supporting all the states of the federation with palliatives to help reduce the impact of subsidy removal in the country.

The governor made this known yesterday while kicking off the third phase of the palliatives distribution exercise in Benue, at the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) office, in Makurdi.

He described the palliatives as an effort meant to momentarily cushion the effects of the subsidy removal, enabling the people of Benue to forge ahead and in the end, achieve the status of the food basket, through food security.

According to the governor, Benue state took delivery of 25 trucks of maize, 35 trucks of rice and the grains will be distributed state wide, adding that it is not going to be exclusive for any political party, as the entire people of the state are meant to benefit.

He said apart from the 100 buses procured and handed over to Benue Links Transport Company Limited, the state government had earlier procured and distributed fertilizers to farmers across the state, with plans in place to register WAEC and NECO for students in government approved schools as well as train 10,000 youths in different Information Communication Technology (ICT) programmes.

He promised further that his administration’s focus on road construction will be shifted to the rural areas in the coming weeks, adding that the government will consider recruitment into the state civil service as early as January.

While reiterating his administration’s readiness to prioritize good governance through the provision of infrastructure, security and prompt payment of salaries and pensions, the governor said his party, APC, was elected to offer succour and good governance and as such, he will do his best to put the state on the pedestal of greatness where it should be.

He warned those against the relative peace the state has enjoyed in recent times to take refuge elsewhere, as they will not be allowed by the government and the good people of the state to achieve their aim.

Commissioner for Power and Transport, Omale Omale, who doubles as Chairman of the Palliatives Distribution Committee, Mr. Aondoakaa Iorpuu, thanked Governor Alia for ensuring equitable distribution of the palliatives and for injecting the intervention in areas that are impactful on the people of the state.

Alia: I can never work against APC

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia said he has special love for his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and will never work against it.

Alia’s vow is contained in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Makurdi yesterday.

The Benue chapter of the APC recently accused the governor of neglecting the party, opting to work with opposition political parties.

It also accused the governor of recruiting and funding a five-man committee to convey false information about the state’s chapter of the party, to the Presidency and the APC National Secretariat.

But Alia, while debunking the claims, insisted that he had a special love for his party, especially the Benue chapter, and was working tirelessly to make the party proud.

He said: “A particularly absurd claim says there is a formation and funding of a committee headed by retired Gen. Lawrence Onoja and Mr Emmanuel Jime, supposedly tasked to misinform the Presidency and National Secretariat about the situation in Benue.

“That committee is also expected to spread falsehoods against the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

“As a governor, l am determined to fulfill my campaign promises to Benue people.

“My continued funding of our party activities and expanding its stakeholders meetings in the state are eloquent testimonies of how I hold the party so dear to my heart.”

The statement commended the Zonal Chairmen of the APC in Benue for their honesty in giving credit to the excellent performance of the governor, so far, and resolving to stand by him.

“Since the party did not accuse the governor of underperformance or cited public dissatisfaction with his leadership style, it means that we are on the right track.

“While we acknowledge the need to unite Benue and make it a better place for us and our children, we equally wish to submit that developing Benue in all sectors is an imperative that sits boldly on the wish list of Alia.

“Alia understands the importance of unity and teamwork in achieving the above. He has been making frantic efforts towards maintaining a cordial working relationship with the leadership of his party.”

The governor explained that those recently sworn in as interim local government caretaker chairmen were among those nominated by the party.

According to him, it is in his prerogative to subject suggested names to scrutiny as no sane governor will accept wholly, everything suggested to him hook, line and sinker.

The governor described as “false,” the claim that he was planning to dump the party.

“This unsubstantiated claim further exposes a desperate inclination on the part of the fabricators.

“They keep cooking media statements from rumours, trivial gossips and their whimsical imaginations, rather than relying on concrete facts.”

The 23 APC Local Government Chairmen in the state after a meeting issued a communiqué and accused Governor Alia of not carrying the party along in the affairs of the state.

The APC chairmen also distance themselves from the composition of the caretaker chairman of the 23 Local Government areas.

The APC chairmen further stated that the Governor Alia doesn’t answer phone calls and not responding to text messages.

Alia: Las Las Holy Communion will reach everybody in Benue

The Governor of Benue State Rev. Fr Hyacinth Iormen Alia has clocked six months in office, the second Catholic priest, after the late Rev Fr. Moses Adasu to rule the state. The Nation correspondent, Uja Emmanuel, takes a look at how the reverend gentleman has fared so far in the Food Basket of the nation.

Governor Hyacinth Alia is one of the Chief Executives of states coming in to rule on a  four-year tenure.

Many believed he had little knowledge of politics apart from his healing masses which attracted thousands of worshippers.

But the electorates trusted him with their mandate and voted him massively into office.

He defeated the eight-year ruling administration of the Peoples  Democratic Party, PDP, by a wide margin of votes.

Fr. Alia, a Catholic priest garnered 473,933 votes to defeat his closest challenger and candidate of the People’s Democracy Party (PDP), Titus Uba, who scored 223,913 votes on 21 March 2023.

It was the first time in the history of Benue that a governorship candidate polled such massive votes.

From the scores, it was clear indications that the voting pattern cut across party lines, religion, or ethnicity.

The Catholic priest, according to his  Chief Press Secretary, CPS’ Sir Kula Tersoo, took over the helms of affairs of Benue at the most difficult times.

Hear Kula: “Governor Hyacinth Alia took over Benue State from ground zero, with no single vehicle, not even an ambulance, he used his old campaign vehicles until at a point in time we said No His Excellency get new vehicles because if something happens to you, it will not be in the interest of Benue state.”

The CPS said that was when the governor managed to get a few new vehicles on his convoy,  but the problem of non-payment of civil servants, and pensioners in state and local government areas who had not been paid for more than two years by the PDP administration remained a cause of worry for the governor. He was greatly worried that workers were not paid for months.

He said retired sick men, women, and poor workers with no hope of salaries gave Governor Alia a headache and he was greatly worried because the state treasury was empty with huge debt, and starting was difficult because Benue people suffered.

Sir Kula told The Nation that Governor Alia took the hard but necessary decisions,  Benue is now better for it, but with time Benue will be greater.

On assumption of office Governor Alia immediately blocked all government bank accounts, bringing government business to a total halt, heads of government agencies found it difficult to operate, especially emergency services like sanitation agencies, hospitals, and water boards among others.

The Governor also did total and comprehensive audits of the number of civil servants on its payroll,  those retired, pensioners,  ( both state and local governments), and public servants, went for three months without salaries until stock-taking was completed.

” We met huge debt but zero bank accounts, and we did even know how to start. In any case, Governor Alia took the risk because he campaigned for a solution, but let’s tell you it was not easy.

“To say Governor Alia started on a difficult footing rule Benue State is an understatement, but gradually there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel as he clocked six months in office this November.

Civil Servants and pensioners who trusted him with their votes and elected him into office are the biggest beneficiaries,  out of excitement Benue civil servants have declared the 25th, of every month as   Holy Communion Day, this is so because since Gove

rnor Alia pronounced that they will be paid their salaries on 25th,  nothing has changed.

The Catholic priest governor has prioritized payment of salaries and pension, including gratuity, once you retire and conclude your documentation, your money will be paid, said Kula Tersoo.

The Nation gathered that Governor Alia took steps to reduce the high cost of transport in Benue occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy, out of the N2b from the Federal Government, the Governor immediately purchased 100  Toyota buses and ordered the state-transport-owned company called  Benue Links to put them into commercial use and it has helped beat down transport fare within and interstate routes.

An investigation by The Nation also revealed that farmers are also partaking in the holy communion as Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia has subsidized fertilizer at 50 percent a bag, which he said is to help Benue maintain her status as the food basket of the nation.

Township and rural roads are receiving attention,  Commissioner for Works Imojime Tiza, said apart from the ongoing 16 road projects in Makurdi,  to give the state capital a befitting look,  Governor Alia, has taken the construction of roads to the Local Government Areas.

Market women and youths have received intervention funds from the government to boost their small-scale businesses, The Social Investment Programme, through school feeding programmes is activated to generate more employment and boost the economy of the state.

For the first time in the history of  Benue State, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have a new lease of life as adequate attention is given to their plight and their exact number is ascertained for proper documentation.

Security of lives and property received a boast with traditional rulers given a major role now m

While Benue State was known for sustained herdsmen attacks on farmers, they no longer do it with impunity, just as there is assurance from the government that IDPs would soon return to their ancestral homes.

Governor Alia has for the first time taken steps to cut wasteful spending by establishing a due process office and appointing a seasoned journalist Daniel Gbabo as the Head of the Due Process office.

The Due process according to findings by The Nation is to properly scrutinize awards of contract figures, reduce the cost where necessary, and avoid duplications of government expenditure.

Observers said Governor Alia is the first to take such steps and decisions to save costs.

Another critical sector where Governor Alia has intervened and people are happy is the Benue State University of Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi.

The hitherto dead  CT scan and dialysis machines are back to life and the people have welcomed the appointment of DR Hwande Terungwa Stephen, as the new Chief Medical Director ( CMD).

Even though many Benue people said there is more work for Governor Hyacinth Alia to do and cover the ground,  he has laid a solid foundation for a greater Benue.

The Foundation, according to an Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA),  Sir Aondoakaa  Iorpuu,  can be seen in his young and energetic Commissioners who constitute members of the Benue Executive Council.

The board, heads of agencies, and parastatals have also been constituted and Governor Hyacinth Alia is good to go.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Kula Tersoo said that, at the end of November, all government accounts will be unfrozen, and real government business will start at a supersonic speed.

To Benue people, Fr. Alia is a Catholic priest and his main duty is to serve holy communion.

Like Benue civil servants are saying Las Las Holy Communion will reach everybody in Benue.

For Governor Alia, so far is so good.

BREAKING: Appeal Court affirms Alia’s election as Benue governor

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has dismissed the appeal by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the last governorship election in Benue state, Titus Uba.

The appeal had challenged the September 23 judgment of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal which dismissed their petition against the return of Hyacinth Alia of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the governorship election held on March 18.

A three-member panel of the court, in a unanimous judgment, resolved the three issues, distilled for determination, against the appellants and held that the appeal was without merit.
