Buhari has not failed Nigerians, says Presidency

As the current administration plans to mark two years on Monday, the Presidency on Tuesday insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari has not failed Nigerians.

The Special Adviser on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, Senior Special Assistant on media and publicity, Garba Shehu and the Senior Special Assistant on media and publicity, Laolu Akande, were fielding questions from journalists after a Press Briefing marking the commencement of activities to showcase second anniversary of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Adesina said that Nigerians should wait for four years in order to properly assess the Buhari’s administration.

According to him, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has four years to deliver and not two years.

On the question claiming that the APC has failed, he said “The person that asked the question said there is a buzz in town, I am sure that you have not conducted a scientific survey that shows you that is a popular position. People can always expresses their opinions, there is liberty on that but you don’t have a scientific survey that has given you the percentage of people that believed that the APC has failed.

“The second point is that, when a government via a party is voted into office, it is voted for a four year term under our own democratic arrangement. When you have spent two years which is like a midterm, the first half of a game, you don’t then determined that it has succeeded or it has failed. No. You can be accused it be atomistic using a small part to determine the whole.

“You can’t write the report card of this administration when it is just hitting the half way mark that will not be fair. The term is four years and the promises are going to be stretched over that four year period. Like the Minister of Transportation said recently, APC did not promise to solve all the country’s problems in one year or two years.

“The mandate the party has is four years and it is pacing itself as it goes along and I am sure that by the end of those four years we will have a lot more to record. It is not by a sudden flight, it will not come by a snap of a finger but will the promises be fulfilled? Yes, I believe it will be fulfilled.

“This administration will take Nigeria far beyond how it met it. So if anybody says APC has failed just tell them it is too early in the day because it is a four year-term and this is just two years. You don’t reach definitive conclusions in two years,” he added.

On alleged coup plot, Adesina said: “The Army has spoken and let us take that position. What the Chief of Army Staff said was a routine warning that goes to military officers, don’t hobnob with politicians and the army has explained the position, let’s take that position and not stretch it beyond what the military has said because they are the ones that can give us the definitive position and they have spoken on it.”

On job creation, he said that the government is mainly focusing on creating enabling environment.

He said that PenCom appointment is a developing issue and being looked into.

On selective anti-corruption war, he said that there are no friends and no foes in the anti-graft battle.

According to him, anyone who has questions to answer would be queried.

He also explained that the status quo remains on the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal and suspended Director-general of National Intelligence Agency, Ayo Oke, just as Acting President Yemi Osinbajo had declared.

On Boko Haram regrouping, he said that the remnants of Boko Haram would be dealt with by the Army.

Urging Nigerians to look at the brighter side of issues, he said that there many failed suicide bombing than those that succeeded.

Stressing that the masses are happy with President Buhari, Mallam Garba Shehu said the President will win any Presidential election conducted today.

“If elections were held today, Buhari will win overwhelmingly.  The masses are still with him.” he said

Asked when the ordinary man will start feeling the impact of the government, he said “The ordinary Nigerians are the pillars of Buhari administration and their confidence in his administration has remained unshaken. The whistle-blower policy has excited them. They are happy that their stolen money is being recovered. The masses are happy but those elites whose sources of ill-gotten wealth have been blocked would not.”

He gave reasons why the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki is still being held in detention.

Shehu insisted that Dasuki was being kept in custody in spite of court orders because there are more cases against him that are being investigated.

He urged Nigerians to allow the agencies to do their jobs.

On the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMAN), Sheik Ibrahim El-Zak Zaky , he said that he was being kept in custody to ensure his safety.

He explained that his family members and relatives have unhindered access to him.

On Chibok girls, he said, government does not have any peculiar interest in keeping the girls, stressing that most of them prefer to stay in Abuja and don’t want to return home.

Speaking on Human rights records of the administration, Shehu said “The Human rights records of this administration are impeccable, thry are unimpeachable. I think we should avoid speaking in general terms. The thing to do is to pin point specific cases to butteres assertions that people make and then we can tackle them.

“As we speak to you now, we are not aware that the administration of Muhammadu Buhari is in breach of the constitution of Nigeria with regards to the protection of the rights of Nigerians.

“Journalists in this country ought to bear testimony on this, there is no single journalist that has been expelled from his duty because he has reported or failed to report, there is no single journalist who is in government detention because they have expressed some views that the government does not like.

“This administration is complying with the decision of the courts of the land, I assure that if anybody tries to do otherwise the President will not allow him to get away with it.” he said

On alleged power deterioration, Shehu said: “It is also a mistake to say power has deteriorated under this administration because when we came in 2015, power generation it was 3,324MW,  it increase to 4,357MW as at August 2015, barely three months after President Buhari came to power and rose to the peak of 5,077MW in 2016, it was the highest power generated in the country.

“Presently, the average generation is about 3,000; this is as a result of vandalism or gas pipeline infrastructure and also low water in our dams. The power sector is also gaining gradually from the peace in the Niger Delta. Usually we experience low generation of power during dry season and this is not because of Buhari’s administration.

“Government is investing heavily in power and has been licensing a lot of renewable energy projects, which is the future. We are doing what is called energy mix, we are not just doing gas power, we are doing hydro, etc. you cover some of these decisions from FEC you have covered them.” he said

Speaking on alleged weak prosecution, Akande said: “The truth of the matter is that our criminal justice system does need a profound and deep reform. The important thing is that this government is working on it. As a matter of fact now, the Acting President has put together a national coordination prosecution team for all the prosecution trying to see how in the medium term we can bring some progress but also working on justice sector reforms on the long term on criminal justice system to strengthen both the investigation and prosecution at the courts. And I know it is going to take a while for us to address it.”

Stressing that the committee on food crisis is still working, he said that the government has reduced importation of food items especially rice.

According to him, the government policy has made farmers millionaires.

  • Court fixes judgment for suit seeking Tambuwal’s sack

Court fixes judgment for suit seeking Tambuwal’s sack

A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed June 23 for judgment in a suit seeking to sack Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal.

Justice Gabriel Kolawole chose the date Tuesday after taking arguments from lawyers representing parties in the suit filed by two governorship aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto during the 2015 elections – Senator Umaru Dahiru and Abubakar Sanyinna.

It is the plaintiffs’ contention that the December 4, 2014 governorship primary election of the APC was held in violation of the party’s guideline for the conduct of such election, its constitution and the Electoral Act.

The violation, they argued, was to the effect that delegates to the primary election were neither screened nor verified and therefore, there was no list of delegates for the election.

Defendants in the case are the APC, Tambuwal and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Arguing his clients’ case yesterday, plaintiffs’ lawyer, Roland Otaru (SAN) said “having regard to the documentary exhibits attached to the originating summons and further affidavit, the issue for determination is narrow.

“All we are saying is that the 1st defendant’s governorship primary election of the 4th of December 2014 in Sokoto State did not comply with the provision of Section 87 of the Electoral Act (EA) 2010 (as amended)  the constitution of the party (APC) and the guidelines rolled out for the conduct of the primary election by the APC.

“We have shown that there was no verification and accreditation of candidates. What we are saying is that there was no accreditation of candidates for the primary in accordance with the EA and the guidelines.

“The 1st defendant (APC), having failed to comply with the guideline, by not allowing accreditation and verification of delegates, the primary was a nullity,” Otaru said.

He submitted that the accreditation of delegates is fundamental to the democratic process.

Otaru argued that having failed to follow the procedure laid down in the APC guideline and its constitution, the court should set aside the primary and grant all our reliefs, which the Supreme Court said are grantable.

He noted that none of the defendants have been able to show the court the list of delegates that were accredited for the primary election.

Otaru said the onus was now on them (the defendants) to show the list of accredited candidates. He added that “All they have shown are the reports of the primary.”

Responding, lawyer to the APC and Tambuwal, Jibrin Okutepa and Sunday Ameh (both SAN) challenged the legitimacy of the suit. They urged the court to dismiss it.

In their notices of preliminary objection and counter-affidavits, which they argued separately, APC and Tambuwal that the suit was wrongly commenced by way of a originating summons.

They stated that with the contentious nature of the facts of the case, the suit ought to be commenced through a writ of summons which would have enabled parties to call witnesses to explain the facts of the case.

“We have argued in our affidavit that these proceedings are not fit to come via originating summons,” he said.

On the plaintiffs’ claim of non-accreditation of delegates during the primaries, Okutepa said the onus was on the plaintiffs to call delegates as witnesses to show that they were not accredited.

He said: “The burden is on the plaintiffs to call delegates to come to court to show that they were not accredited. This case is bereft of any evidential support to warrant any declaration to be made in favour of the plaintiffs.”

Okutepa argued that the plaintiffs’ prayer seeking the conduct of fresh primaries was not only ungrantable but could push the court to a path of collision with the Constitution in a situation where the law provided that primaries must be held 60days before the main election.

Ameh argued in similar vein and maintained in his submission on his notice of preliminary objection that the suit was wrongly commenced.

He said, “The preliminary objection challenges the manner of commencement of the action through an originating summons.

“That the facts for and against the suit are hostile so much so that our counter-affidavits filed in response to the the plaintiffs’ affidavit led the plaintiffs to file a further and better affidavit shows that the facts are contentious and requires explanations.”

Lawyer to INEC Alhassan Umar, said the commission had filed a counter-affidavit to enable it to exhibit its “monitoring report of APC governorship primaries in Sokoto State.”

He however said that in compliance with the admonition of the Supreme Court in plethora of cases, the commission would remain neutral and not take side with any of the plaintiffs and the two other defendants.

Umar said, “The pith of our case is that in pursuant of the constitutional mandate of the third defendant we monitored the primaries and the report is Exhibit I earlier referred.

“In the case of Amaechi against INEC, the Supreme Court upheld the sanctity of the report of primaries issued by the third defendant (INEC).”

Otaru, who later responded to the preliminary objection by Tambuwal and APC, argued that there was no any form of “friction” in the case to warrant the commencement of the suit via a writ of summons.

He also said the two notices of preliminary objection did not comply with Order 29(4)(a) of the Civil Procedure Rules of the Federal High Court his court having not been filed within 21 days of the defendants’ being served with the plaintiffs’ originating summons.

Okutepa, on point of law, argued that Order 29 of the Civil Procedure Rules of the Federal High Court was not applicable to the situation “because we are not challenging the jurisdiction of the court.

He said, “The suit has been wrongly commenced. We are not saying the court cannot hear the case.

“The court can hear it through a writ of summons so that parties can call witnesses.”

  • APC chieftain urges Nigerians to support Osinbajo

APC chieftain urges Nigerians to support Osinbajo

Pastor Folorunsho Longe, the National Coordinator of Buhari Support Organisation (South) has urged Nigerians to support Acting President Yemi Osinbajo in his efforts toward ensuring good governance and national economic recovery.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Chieftain made the call on Tuesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday.

“All of us as Nigerians should support Osinbajo for him to succeed in implementing government policies so that the current economic and other challenges facing the nation can be overcome.

“The president has done the right thing by transmitting a letter to the National Assembly for Osinbajo to serve as Acting President before he comes back from medical vacation.

“However, for him to continue to deliver on the change mantra, he needs the cooperation and support of every Nigerian, irrespective of religion, tribal and party differences,’’ Longe said.

According to him, Osinbajo is a tested and trusted hand who will not derail the tempo of comprehensive change programme of the Buhari administration, especially in the fight against corruption.

He expressed confidence that the acting president could exercise responsibility as he did in the past with strong will, commitment and absolute respect for the Constitution.

“Buhari has fought tirelessly to tackle the insurgency which had caused a lot of havoc to us as a nation, and corruption is being fought squarely.

“However, we expect that the war against corruption will not suffer a setback due to the absence of President Buhari, and that is why everyone should rally support for the acting president,’’ he said.

Longe therefore, urged all organs of government to cooperate and work with the acting president in the collective efforts of delivering dividends of democracy to Nigerians.

He specifically called on political appointees of Buhari, especially heads of MDAs to show solidarity, commitment and loyalty to Osinbajo since he was acting in the capacity of the president.

“There is no doubt that Buhari believes in Osinbajo that he can work with him and deliver on his behalf, and that is why they ran together.”

He advised the Osinbajo to beware of unpatriotic elements, especially politicians, both in the ruling and opposition parties, who may want to exploit the current situation to actualise their selfish interests.

“I urge him to beware of mischief makers who seek to pitch him against Buhari or the Nigerian people,’’ Longe added.

  • Former Enugu Speaker attributes popularity of APC to good governance

Former Enugu Speaker attributes popularity of APC to good governance

Former Speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly, Chief Eugene Odo, says the growing popularity of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state is a call for good governance.

Odo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Monday that the current leadership style and quality in the state was inconsistent with what obtained in the past.

He said that the leadership lacuna was so glaring that members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state were joining the APC in their numbers.

“Part of the reasons why we joined the APC is that with the level God has assisted us, I do not think the state government has anything to offer for now.

“We do not want to show the difference between what is happening now and what happened in the past because the facts are glaring.

“God has benefitted us and we should be in the vanguard of benefitting others. That is our mission in APC,” he said.

The former speaker lauded residents of the state for embracing the APC, adding that with committed men and women, the state will go back to its former glory.

He appealed to members of the party not to join issues with other political parties but to work assiduously in ensuring that APC won future elections in the state.

“We should not be reactive to the threats from the PDP because they are confused.

“Most importantly, there is nothing like PDP in Enugu again. What we have is a group of people that will soon be lumped into another party,” he said.

Odo said that the party faithful in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area were working round the clock to make the APC formidable.

“Our slogan and strategy is that any political appointee in the other parties must lose their polling booths during future elections and we are working towards that.

“We thank God that the PDP is now history in Enugu State so whatever reaction coming from there is panic measure,” he said.

He said that it was imperative that members of APC worked together to achieve its set goals.

“We were thinking of how to develop and transform APC into a formidable party in the state when former Gov. Sullivan Chime joined us.

“His presence has assisted us even in our respective local government areas because people who might not have taken some of us serious now know that we are powerful.

“By the grace of God, APC will certainly take over the Government House in Enugu in 2019,” Odo said.

NAN recalls that Odo, who led the state assembly for eight years as speaker joined the APC in January, 2017.

  • Former PDP spokesman accuses defectors of selfishness

Former PDP spokesman accuses defectors of selfishness

A former national publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Anietie Okon, says those dumping the party in Akwa Ibom are selfish.

“Those who switched camp did that for selfish interest, they lack commitment to the party.

“By their very act, they give politics a bad name, they are doing so for their selfish interest, they are not working for people but themselves,” Okon told the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Uyo.

Okon who was reacting to recent defection from PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) by some prominent politicians in the state, described the action of such politicians as regrettable.

According to him, many politicians place their personal interest above the common good of all.

He noted that politicians had shown very little concern about collective interest of the people and the vision of building the state for the wellbeing of future generations.

“Akwa Ibom politics runs on two clear lines, which are partisan. This is regrettable so far.

“As far as I am concerned there must be a point in political partisanship, where the greater interest of the people is placed above partisanship.

“After politicking, there comes a period of governance. Governance is not to be one-sided. It puts the interest of the people first.”

NAN recalls that about 200 members of PDP in Uruan Local Government defected to the APC on Friday and three weeks ago 500 PDP stalwarts left the party in Ikono Local Government Area.

Okon absolved the PDP leadership in the state led by Gov. Udom Emmanuel for the wave of defection, saying that the governor was resolute in fulfilling his electoral promises to the people.

“As Gov. Emmanuel celebrates two years in office this May, the state is not owing workers’ salaries and entitlements like some states.

“We are in a modern world, the important thing is to give satisfaction to the people and the governor is toiling day and night to meet the people’s needs,” Okon said.

He assured that the PDP administration in the state was on course and determined to deliver quality and people-centred leadership.

  • No APC member joined PDP in Enugu, says party chairman

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State says none of its members has joined any other political party in the last two years.

The party said on Sunday that, on the contrary, it had become the new bride in the state as some members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and some others defected to its fold.
The state Chairman of the party, Dr. Ben Nwoye, made the claim in Aguobu-Owa, Ezeagu Local Government Area of the state, when a former Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in the state, Chief Joe Mmamel, defected to the APC from the PDP.
According to Nwoye, the clarification had become necessary following a recent claim by the PDP that some APC members defected to its fold.

NAN reports that the state PDP, at a recent zonal meeting in Awgu, announced the defection of 5,000 members of the APC into its fold.

At the meeting, the defectors wielded brooms which they finally dropped and pledged allegiance to the PDP.
Nwoye, however, claimed that the action was a panic measure adopted by the state PDP.

“They have two factions; so, what happened there was phony – PDP members defecting between their factions.
“There were no faces known to us as our members but we have real PDP members defecting to our party,” Nwoye said.
Also reacting, a former governor of the state under the PDP, Mr Sullivan Chime, who now belongs to APC, said: “We need to tell our people the truth because the game of politics has changed.
“When PDP was on ground, there was no other viable party in the state.
“Other political parties always joined our campaign train but what we hear today is that some people were given brooms to declare for PDP.
“Not a single person was identified as an APC member.”
The former governor said that he declared for the APC in his ward, urging that whoever desired to change political party should not hide his identity.
“I declared for APC publicly in my ward. Former Senate President, Dr Ken Nnamani, and some others did the same thing.’’
Chime said that the APC had come to stay in the state.

  • House of Reps member decamps to APC

House of Reps member decamps to APC

The caucus of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) got further depleted in the House of Representatives Wednesday as a member from Plateau State, Edward Pwajok defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This is as a December 2017 dateline was given for the final decimation of PDP.

Plateau State governor, Simon Lalung said though democracy was not about a one-party state but PDP members would be left with no option than to join the ruling party by the end of the year.

House rules were stepped for the presence of the governor in the chamber to witness the defection.

This brings to 221 the number of APC member in the House.

On the 22nd of February, a member of the PDP, Emmanuel Ukoette representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom, defected to APC.

A month later, on the 22nd of March, two House members, Tony Nwoye (Anambra) and Emmanuel Udende (Benue) defected from PDP to APC on the floor at plenary.

Speaker Yakubu Dogara read Pwajok’s letter on the floor after which the Minority Leader, Leo Ogor protested saying the movement was wrong since there is a substantive Chairman of the party.

Pwajok, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) cited irreconcilable differences that have left PDP divided at all levels as part of his reasons for dumping the party.

Saying that the party secretariat in Jos was not even spared as it was sealed last week, he noted that, “The party is divided in my Local government down to the ward level with parallel structures.

“On Saturday 13th May, 2017, over 500 delegates from my constituency besieged my residence mandating, directing and authorizing that I quit the party”.

Minority Leader Ogor protested that the party has a chairman and that until the litigation at the Supreme Court was disposed of, division within the party was not enough reason for defection.

Ogor also protested when the Majority Leader Femi Gbajabiamila welcomed Pwajok into the fold of APC but the Speaker placed him saying same privilege would be extended to the Minority Leader if any lawmaker defects to his party.

Goveneor Lalung, who witnessed the defection of Pwajok on the floor said Nigerians should expect a decimated opposition party in the near future.

Saying that Pwajok’s defection would open a floodgates of movement to APC, Lalong said he was not planning to muzzle the opposition in the state.

“We are not planning to turn our State into a one-party state but if APC government is very doing and everybody is moving into our party from the federal to the State, why not?

“Though we are not saying we want a one party state because we need a strong opposition to check mate the ruling party, but I’m sure, before the end of the year, with the things this government is doing both at the federal and state, we may not have a substantial minority party again.

“The movement of Pwajok has opened the gate and very soon we will see a lot of defection into APC in Plateau State,” he said.

On his part, Pwajok dismissed the threat of the PDP caucus in the House saying he was “ready for them”.

He said his defection was not about 2019, adding that besides his constituents that encouraged him to dump PDP, the party’s chairman, Ahmed Makarfi has also asked members to find alternative platforms to further their political ambitions.

“PDP is the cause of its own problem and it is irredeemably damaged.

“Some party stalwarts like governor Fayose have sworn to leave PDP if Sheriff is declared chairman. Is that how to reconcile? Was it not those people that invited Sheriff?  APC did not impose him on PDD.

“Some of us complained at the initial stage that bringing Sheriff into PDP is like inviting an undertaker.

“So, I have to look at the realities and if the irreconcilable differences persists, one need to find an alternative platform.

“That is why this is taking place now and not on the eve of an election,” he said.

  • Celebrating World Telecommunication Day

    Celebrating World Telecommunication Day

Gone are the days when various telecommunication gizmos where the exclusive preserve of the rich. It is funny now, but just a few years ago, (more specifically, between the year 2000 and 2003), the cost of a mobile phone was on the high end; talkless of the price of a Sim Card.

Today, the old woman down the street who sells herbs (alaagbo) has at least one mobile phone, the fashion designer has literally taken his business to the cloud (internet), and in a more jocular manner, we hear that Babalawos (traditional herbalists) now contact the deity using Google.

All these are pointers to the plethora benefits of the telecommunication revolution in our dear nation – Nigeria.

Going back to the annals of history, we understand that early means of communicating over a distance included visual signals such as beacons, smoke signals, telegraphs, signal flags, optical heliographs etc.

Other examples of pre-modern long-distance communication included audio messages such as coded drumbeats, lung-blown horns, and loud whistles.

The wake of the 20th century witnessed some kind of renaissance and innovations, especially when it pertains to long distance communication. Electrical and electromagnetic technologies, such as telegraph, telephone, teleprinter, networks, radio, microwave transmission, fiber optics, and communications satellites were prominent.

The theme for this year World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is “Big Data For Big Impact”. It focuses on the power of Big Data for development and aims to explore how to turn imperfect, complex, often unstructured data into actionable information in a development context.

The purpose of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide.

Information gathering is a major boon for any nation, therefore, the fierce urgency to garner the demographic statistics of the denizens of a country. This way the policy and administrative wonks can forge a template for macro manpower planning and make informed economic decisions.

Analysed data generated from telecommunication companies can strongly complement the evidence-based nature of decision-making that can be leveraged at national, regional and international levels to drive success towards attaining all 17 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030.

In more practical terms, Telecommunication is the transmission of signs, signals, messages, words, writings, images and sounds or intelligence of any nature by wire, radio, optical or other electromagnetic systems. It occurs when the exchange of information between communication participants includes the use of technology.

The impact of telecommunication on education has become so enormous that it cannot be expressed on a sheet of paper. Of course, the functionality of the various distant learning programmes situated all over, which is on the increase on a daily basis, wouldn’t have been possible without the telecommunication system such as the internet.

More so, the series of educative programmes, soap operas, and what have you, being televised by the various television stations across the country can also be included as one of the avenues that have encouraged distant learning.

As regards politics, telecommunication has recently proven to the citizenry that they can as well observe any electoral activity such as voting and counting of election results from their respective homes without stepping out of their premises.

The recent Presidential primary election conducted by the All Progressives Congress (APC), which was observed by every Nigerian both home abroad, is a good example of the said practice. Such has helped to improve transparency during elections, thereby avoiding occurrence of various possible electoral malpractices and crises.

It is no longer news that millions of Nigerians are currently employed by several telecommunication companies operating in the country. Statistics show that over fifteen percent (15%) of Nigerian citizens are engaged with various telecom firms. Suffice it to say that the telecommunication industry is one of the major employers of labour in Nigeria, likewise other countries across the globe.

Though telecommunication technologies play a very vital role in the social, economic, and even political development of any nation, it’s noteworthy that several anomalies need to be addressed in the sector in question.

A situation whereby uncensored films, pictures or music are disseminated either via the television or the social media is totally unwholesome to the state of any nation, thus ought to be looked into by the relevant authorities such as the Nigerian Communications Communication (NCC) and the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

Finally, the incessant and opportunistic billing of customers by these telecommunication companies needs to be put on the leash and curtailed. Customers should be able to get real value for their monies – whether it be for data or calls.

  • I’ve no plan to leave PDP, says Ogbulafor

I’ve no plan to leave PDP, says Ogbulafor

A former National Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, said on Tuesday that he had no plan to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ogbulafor said this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Umuahia.

He said there was no truth in a media report that he was holding talks with chieftains of APC in Abia on how to defect to the party.

Ogbulafor, however, recalled that when APC won the presidential election in 2015, he visited the party’s National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun, to congratulate him.

He said the gesture should not be misconstrued, adding that he had no intention of joining APC.

The former national chairman said, “I am still in PDP and I have not discussed with any other person on plans to defect to APC.’’

On the judiciary, he said, “I have confident in the judiciary. It has given us victory in Abia with the affirmation of Dr Okezie Ikpeazu as governor and it will give us victory in PDP.’’

Ogbulafor further said that he had implicit confidence in the nation’s judiciary to deliver judgment, in a fair manner, in the party’s leadership crisis.

He further said that PDP remained popular and leading political party in all the 774 local government areas in the country.

“The judiciary appreciated that it is not good for Nigeria to be a one-party state because it appreciates that one party system is not good for the nation’s democracy.”

Members of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC), one of the legacy parties the makes up the All Progressives Congress (APC) Monday asked the Nasarawa state governor Tanko Al-Makura and the National Assembly to prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari to consider either former Minister of Information, Prince Tony Momoh or Engr. Buba Galadima as the next Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

While Prince Momoh was the National Chairman of the defunct CPC, Galadima was Director General of the Buhari Campaign Organization.

The defunct CPC members operating under Southern Mandate of Nigeria (SMN) said their advocacy was about the empowerment of core members of the defunct CPC and “our collective political and economic survival of the members who stake their lives and properties to deliver 2.5million votes for the now President Mohammadu Buhari in 2011.”

In a statement in Abuja signed by the National Coordinator, Comrade Ikonomwan Francis, the group called on its members nationwide to form a united front “to resist these strangers who now form cabals to hijack Buhari administration.”

The statement read in part: “There is  no doubt that Nigerians are in dear need of capable hand to man the office of SGF that will join the President to bring smiles to their faces in the second half of this Administration.

“Prince Tony Momoh and Engr. Buba Galadima are personalities who will never compromise in an issue that is for good of Nigeria people and so, will ensure that such laudable program is fully implemented.”

He said Nigerians were suffering because some people in President Buhari’s government are aliens to the programmes he promised Nigerians, adding that “for instance where was the current Chairman and Managing Director of NDDC, Managing Director of Nexim Bank, Chairman of NPA and Host of others when we were labouring to build for Mr. President?

“We must unite to resist these handful political monsters who are hell bent in making every one of us to play a second fiddle role in a government we laboured to build for years.

“We make bold to say that there is serous hunger and starvation in the land, the exchange rate of dollars has sky rocketed, prices of goods and services are on the increase on daily basis, all because the cabals are alien to the 14 years developmental plan of the defunct CPC.

“Imagine what is happening to the much publicized Anchor Borrowers Programme in various State today? How about the Social Investment and Empowerment Program, has it been able to achieve it’s set goals?”
