Sylva to Dickson: Leave tribunal to do its work

Former Governor and Bayelsa State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Timipre Sylva, Friday, asked the incumbent governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson, to halt his dangerous campaign against the state’s election petition tribunal.

Sylva said Dickson and his co-travelers were patronizing a few online media to cast aspersions on tribunal members and browbeat the court as it prepared to deliver its judgement.

The former governor is challenging the outcome of the 2015 governorship election in which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Dickson, a candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the winner.

Sylva in the statement signed by his Media Adviser, Mr. Doifie Buokoribo, reacted to series of verbal attacks launched by pro-Dickson’s groups ahead of the judgement.

He said that Dickson was frequently using bully-boy tactics involving a series of lies deliberately told to impugn the integrity of the tribunal in obvious fear of an unfavourable ruling.

Sylva said: “In one of the canards about a week ago, vended through a strange group, Good Governance Initiative (GGI), the Dickson group claimed that Sylva was lobbying the wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mallam Abubakar Malami (SAN), the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engr. Babachir David Lawal, and other officials of the Federal Government to put pressure on the election tribunal to declare him governor via a “black market judgement”.’

“Another false report, an apparent follow-up to the intimidation campaign run, appeared on Thursday, 14 July. It claimed the existence of an imaginary tension in Yenagoa following alleged “confirmation” by APC leaders, including the national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu that the tribunal would rule in Sylva’s favour.

“According to the report, “Some key supporters of the Dickson-led PDP” have met to plan how to react in the event of an unfavourable judgement.

“Chief Sylva, who is the petitioner in the case sees this attempt by Dickson to second-guess the decision of the tribunal and, perhaps, try to intimidate it, as immoral and despicable. Sylva appeals to Dickson and his men to allow the tribunal to do its job”.

He said that Dickson successfully applied his familiar intimidation strategies in the past, before, during, and after the governorship election in the state last December and this January.

But Sylva said such tactics would not succeed with the judiciary adding that as a democrat, he took his case against the last election to the tribunal.

He said: “As a democrat and firm believer in the rule of law, Sylva had taken his misgivings about the outcome of the election to the election tribunal to see if the victory awarded to Dickson by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) could stand up to judicial scrutiny.

“He, thus, urges that Dickson should for once control his predilections for falsehood and violent incitement and wait for the judicial process as it unfolds.

“Sylva’s expectation of justice from the election tribunal is hinged on his belief that the honourable judges would be guided by the letter and spirit of the law.

“Neither Bola Tinubu, nor Abubakar Malami, Babachir Lawal or Aisha Buhari is a member of the election tribunal. Therefore, it is unfair for Dickson and his group to insinuate that the respected tribunal judges are poodles of any political party or individual.

“It is also unjust for Dickson to be spending the resources of the people of Bayelsa State on a desperate media campaign purposed to call into question the reputation of the country’s judiciary.

“It is even wicked, ungodly and uncaring that this wastage is happening at a time when workers in the state are being owed several months’ salaries.

“We are aware that huge amounts of money have been disbursed by Dickson to individuals and groups to do a hatchet job on the Bayelsa election tribunal as it prepares to deliver its judgement.

“We are also aware that certain groups have been procured by Dickson and his men to cause violence if the ruling does not go in his favour.

“This manifestation of politics of anxiety on the part of Dickson is despicable. It is uncalled for, especially, as he is well aware that whatever judgement the election tribunal would give is not final”.

Sylva added: “Finally, no date has been fixed for judgement by the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal Holden at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja with Petition Number: EPT/BY/GOV/002/2016, involving:  Sylva and the APC Versus INEC, Dickson and PDP. Yet, one report was very categorical on “the date” for verdict. This is worrisome.

According to one online medium on Thursday: “Although the tribunal will deliver its judgement on his petition on July 29, sources told journalists that the ‘positive mood’ in the Sylva’s camp was sequel to alleged ‘confirmation’ received from some influential citizens within the APC that judgement will likely go the way of their candidate at the tribunal.

“Irrefutable evidence linking key media aides of Dickson to these irresponsible reports makes this even more worrisome.”

Bayelsa local govt workers sacked amidst protest

…Victims accuse council boss of witch-hunt

Hundreds of workers from Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, have taken to the streets of Yenagoa, the state capital, to protest their sacking and exclusion from an ongoing process to pay the staff of the council January salary.

It was gathered that out of the seven months owed workers in the council, the state ordered that one month salary should be paid them.

But the aggrieved workers in a peaceful protest on Monday said their names had been removed from payrolls despite partaking in the last verification exercise.

The workers including primary school teachers accused the council boss, Joshua Maciver of carrying out an alleged instruction to delete names of persons who supported the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last governorship election from the council’s payroll.

The workers were said to have disrupted vehicular movement and commercial activities in Yenagoa during the peaceful demonstration.

They were said to have barricaded the road leading to the popular Swali market and the UBA banks where salaries were being processed for other workers.

The workers said on enquiry, the council boss told them that their names were removed from the payroll because they were illegally employed in 2008.

But some of the protesters who lamented their plight said their salaries were paid since 2008 till after the general election in 2015.

According to them life had become unbearable following non-payment of their salaries.

One of the teachers, Mr. Abraham Young, of St. Barnabas School, said the sudden action by the council chairman to stop their payment and accused them of being illegally employed was wrong.

He said it was inhuman to call them fake workers after undergoing series of verifications.

He said: “This is wrong. How can you wake up and call people who have been working and receiving salaries since 2008 fake workers. We have contributed immensely in the educational sector of this state. Look at how they treat us. How do we feed our families after waiting for so long for our salaries?”

Another affected worker, Mr. Apollo Simon Gidi, from the post primary school board, said for eight years he worked  without any challenge.

He said he was initially happy when he heard over the radio that the teachers would be paid January salary but that he became sad when the chairman said appointments of persons employed in 2008 had been terminated.

“The termination of our appointment was not on any basis. We were employed by the state government through the normal procedure of employment. How will they come now and call us fake workers. We must take them to industrial court”, he said.

Addressing the crowd, Maciver faulted the accusation of witch-hunt by the affected persons insisting that the procedure for the 2008 employment of the victims was wrong.

He said his predecessors employed workers without the approval by the state government, adding the victims were supposed to be arrested and prosecuted instead of them to disturb peace through protest.

He said the people protesting defrauded the state for many years and should be made to face the law.

Oyegun to Nigerians: Pray for Buhari’s government

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has appealed to Nigerians to support and pray for the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari as well as for the peace and development of the country.

In a message to Muslims on the successful completion of Ramadan fast, Oyegun reminded them of the cardinal message that although Eid-el-fitr signifies the end of Ramadan, the doctrines of moderation, piety, regular supplication to Allah (SWT), and being a brother’s keeper subsist always beyond the Ramadan.

Odigie-Oyegun: “Amidst Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, Muslim faithful are enjoined to spare a thought for the country. The APC also calls on Muslim faithful and indeed all Nigerians to use the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr to pray for the peace, development and prosperity of the country. The Party also calls on Nigerians to pray and support the administration as it continues to develop and implement socio-development initiatives for the good of the country.

“Happily, the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration is already nursing Nigeria’s battered economy back to life. Nigeria has regained its rightful place amongst the comity of progressive nations. The implementation of palliative measures and social safety nets contained in the 2016 National Budget will ease the current economic hardships in the country.

“As we celebrate Eid-el-Fitr, I pray that Allah (SWT) accept our prayers and guide the country out of the present rough patch. I wish all Nigerians a happy and fulfilling celebration. Eid-el-Mubarak!”

Alleged Forgery: APC Scandinavia reprove Senate over AGF

The Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC) Scandinavia, Mr Ayoola Lawal has advised the leadership of the Senate to desist from apportioning baseless faults on the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, (AGF) Abubakar Malami (SAN) over its alleged forgery case.

Lawal, who made this known in a recent press statement, noted the Minister of Justice is merely doing his executive duty by calling the attention of the judiciary to what he perceived was not in tandem with national policy of the President Buhari-led administration.

According to him, if the Senate leadership is convinced that it did not forge the Senate rule as accused, at should stop raising dust over the matter and simply defend itself before the law court.

“I tell you the truth, the attitude of the Senate to the matter raised by the AGF over forgery of Senate rule indicates that there is skeleton in the senate’s cupboard, which it cannot defend,” he said.

Referring to the AGF’s response to the senate leadership on Friday, Lawal said: “I agree that claims by the Senate that the charge of forgery against Saraki, his deputy Ike Ekweremadu and two others, amounted to an abuse of the principle of separation of powers.”

Charged with the Senate president and the deputy Senate president are former Clerk of the National Assembly Salisu Maikasuwa and Clerk of the Senate Bernard Efeturi.

“Yes, this is democracy, and as the AGF has said, the senate president and his deputy have no immunity from trial. Forgery of Senate rules cannot be described as an internal affair of the Senate, never!“ he stressed.

He then urge the AGF to continue with his rightful duty as Nigerians are fully in support of his actions, saying: “Impunity must stop at all levels and everyone accused should face the full weight of the law, if found truly guilty by the court.”
We all deserve a better life for ourselves and generation unborn. I strongly believe that with the tenacity of Mr. President to fight indiscipline and corruption irrespective of whose ox is gored and support from majority of Nigerians, Nigeria will be great again.

Pipeline bombings: Buhari appeals to militants to soft pedal

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday urged Niger Delta militants to soft pedal on the bombing and destruction of oil and gas installations.

He made the call during the breaking of fast with All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The President also urged those closed to the militants to prevail on them to take it easy.

Noting that the militants are in many groups, he said that the equipment they are using negatively are not small technology.

He said: “I honestly don’t know how many factions the militants are in the Niger Delta compared to the north east where you have the Boko Haram.

“The technology being deployed by the militants to destroy oil installations is high tech, the way they can go on high sea and international waters and target oil installations is a national problem. It is affecting development.

“No insurance company will want to insure installations that will end up being blown up and no banks will want to finance such installations.

“Those of you who have friends among the leadership or even the militants themselves should plead with them in the name of God ‎Almighty to take it easy.

“We need to stablise to create employment, we need to stabilize the economy etc. I agonize over these things.

“We are in a very difficult time, so we have to organise ourselves. Anybody that says he has any other country than Nigeria should go out and see.”

The President also said that the successful conduct of the APC primaries in Edo State has given him a new hope.

He said that Ondo State is going to be watched very closely in order to ensure that the vote of the people count.

Senate APC, Labour party caucus pledge absolute support to Buhari

The joint caucus of All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party in the Senate Thursday pledged support for President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government.

Members of the joint caucus said at a press conference in Abuja that they are stoutly behind the policies and programmes of President Buhari led administration.

Senate Chief Whip, Senator Olusola Adeyeye, in a speech said that they are shocked at the partisan reaction of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senators to the on-going investigations and recovery of public funds meant for the prosecution of the war against insurgency.

Members of the Senate caucus of the PDP had on Wednesday said that they have withdrawn support from President Buhari due to alleged persecution of their members in parts of the country.

Senator Adeyeye who represents Osun Central Senatorial District, noted that contrary to the position of PDP Senator the on-going investigation of the arms deal is not a partisan war against any party.

Senator Adeyeye who was flanked by 14 other APC Senators and Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the only Labour Party Senator said: “The members of the Joint Caucus of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and Labour Party Senators in the Senate are stoutly behind the policies and programmes of the President Mohammadu Buhari’s administration.

“Our support is aimed at actualizing the promised desired change that Nigerians voted for last year.

“We are shocked at the totally partisan reaction of our colleagues from the minority party, PDP, to the on-going investigations and recovery of public funds meant for the prosecution of the war against insurgency.

“Contrary to the assertion of our PDP colleagues, the investigation is not a partisan war against a particular political party.

“It is no longer a news item that there was a wanton diversion of public funds meant for fighting insurgency to fund campaigns of PDP.

“Members of the PDP were the sole and iniquitous beneficiaries of this diversion.

“Seeking to recover diverted public funds is neither dictatorial nor against the rule of law.

“In all the actions, programmes and policies of the PMB-led APC Federal Government, no PDP member has been unjustly arrested or imprisoned on mere allegations.

“On the contrary, we are daily regaled with news of millions and billions of naira of public funds traced to accounts of individuals some of whom have accepted to return such diverted public funds.

“As law abiding and patriotic citizens, we cherish the rule of law and the separation of powers among the different arms of government.

“Political interference based on partisan consideration must be eschewed.

“Members of the joint caucus of the APC and Labour Party will always give their best in support of the only President Nigeria has.

“We plead with our PDP colleagues to rise above partisan inclinations so that together, we all can bring to fruition the positive changes that our people seek and deserve.”

Adeyeye also assured that the caucus is prepared to support any member of the APC occupying any public office.

  • APC to Mimiko: Explain how you spent Ondo funds

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State has asked Governor Olusegun Mimiko to explain why there is only N3.4billion in the coffer of the state.
The party said the Governor must tell the people of Ondo State how he managed the  Federal allocations collected between January and May.
Addressing reporters in Akure,  the State capital, State Publicity Secretary of the party,  Omo’ba Abayomi Adesanya said Governor Mimiko has not explained how he got the N3.4billion and how he has spent the allocations from January.
The APC said one would wonder why the Governor can not put two months allocations together to pay the workers salaries.
It lamented the level of the pains and suffering of workers who are daily hoping to hear the good news from the Governor.
“We noticed the arrogance and challant attitude of the Governor while addressing the workers on Tuesday
“We want to say unequivocally that this Governor believes that he needs nothing from the people of Ondo State
“Mimiko will never addressed workers like that in 2012 while he was seeking a second term in Office “Adesanya said
He said the governor has not denied running various bank accounts on behalf of Ondo State.
“This worker have information,  we are begging them to release it. They are aware that tax payers money is stashed in some bank accounts
“Governor Mimiko is only hiding this money to spend during the forthcoming governorship election ” APC alleged.
The party wondered why they cannot borrow money as he did for the local government elections.
“What value had the local government elections added to the welfare of workers,  if the Governor can borrow money for local government elections,  can’t he borrow to pay workers?
“Mimiko said he has been borrowing for capital projects,  then what has he been doing with Federal allocations? What happened to the state IGR?” the statement read.

Kogi: Ex-LG secretaries berate Melaye over probe panel

The Forum of the Past Secretaries of Local Government Councils in Kogi State Wednesday tackled the Senator Dino Melaye-led group of the All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders over their alleged involvement in the crisis rocking the state.

It called on the APC stakeholders to join hands with Governor Yahaya Bello, to move the state forward instead of attacking him.

Addressing newsmen in Lokoja, the state capital, the spokesperson of the forum, Audu Abdulsalam, said the state needed peace to develop.

He said there was the need for well-meaning people of the state to come together and rescue it from the maladministration of past governments.

The group noted that Bello should be commended for the release and payment of the Federal Government bailout fund to Kogi State.

The group added: “We must also commend him on his efforts to rid the state of the menace of kidnapping and other violent crimes through the deployment of surveillance helicopter and special military force to the state which has led to the harvest of arrest of men of the underworld.”

They therefore called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Chairman of the APC, John Odigie-Oyegun to call Melaye and his group to order and save the state from further political crisis.
