  • Lulu, former NFF President, promises to transform Kogi State

A former president of the Nigerian Football Federation, (NFF) Alhaji Sani Lulu Abdullahi, has promised to turn around the fortunes of Kogi State if voted into office as the next governor.

Speaking after he purchased the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination form to contest for the party’s governorship, Lulu, who was in charge of the NFF between 2006 and 2010, said it was incumbent on him to work tirelessly to bring smiles to the faces of Kogites whom he said have become despondent in the last three and a half years as a result of hunger, deprivations, and economic disempowerment.

“It is a known fact that I inherited a debt of N300 million when I assumed office at the Glass House as the president of NFF  in August 2006 but left a robust N2.8 billion at the end of my tenure in 2010,” explained Lulu.

“A state like Kogi in dire straits today needs an experienced, focused and one that has zero tolerance for corruption like me, at this point in time.”

Meanwhile, a close confidant of Lulu, Alhaji Abdullahi Ndanusa, has enjoined Kogites to work collectively to ensure that his friend of over 40 years wins his party’s ticket and the overall state election, describing him as one of the most focused, down-to-earth and egalitarian administrators he has ever related with.

He lamented the current situation in Kogi, saying it has degenerated to the level that the people of the state can no longer fold their arms and allow the situation to deteriorate further.

Speaking in a similar vein, Otunba Adekunle Olawoyen described the aspirant as a household name in the country and one that has made his mark in sports and other spheres.

Olawoyen said Lulu is the man that will rescue the state from its grinding poverty and general backwardness even as he charged the APC card-carrying members in the state to effect the real change by voting Sani Lulu as the party’s flag bearer in the coming primaries.

Women Leader of Lulu’s Campaign Organisation, and a front line of Buhari/Osinbajo Support Group, Ambassador Fatima Adams, equally described Lulu as the best person to take over the reins of leadership of the state, describing him as a tested and trusted administrator.

“He is a calm and accessible person. He has a listening ear, he has tasted power before but he does not allow that to intoxicate him; Kogi State will turn a new leaf with Alhaji Sani Lulu Abdullahi in charge,” she noted.

  • No Kogite alive voted for Yahaya Bello – Audu

Prince Mustapha Audu, popularly called Mona by his supporters and admirers is one of the numerous aspirants jostling to unseat Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello. Even though there has been speculation that three of them from the Prince Abubakar Audu family were interested in the governorship seat, he is the only one who has paid the N22.5 million needed to obtain the nomination and expression of interest form for the All Progressives Congress (APC). In this interview with Tony Akowe, he speaks on why he wants to govern Kogi State.

WHAT exactly do you have for the people of Kogi State? We will focus on three major things. We know that a lot of sectors are lacking in Kogi State right now, but we need to have a focus. Our major focus will be human capital development, the youth and women empowerment. That does not mean that we will not focus on other areas. We honestly believe that any government today focusing on constructing roads, water, health care is not really a serious government because these were the same promises our grandparents gave to us, the same promises our parents gave to us. So, we cannot be giving out these same promises, but we know that they are very important. But with technology and new means of doing things, we believe that we can build roads, hospitals, schools, provide electricity quickly and efficiently in a sustainable manner.

You are going into the race with an incumbent governor. Considering the fact that the party has approved indirect mode of primary, what are your expectations?

A lot of people worry about the power of incumbency because of the power to influence the delegates. But we are not worried whether it is direct or indirect because we know that we have won. This is because our own approach to finding out the way forward is completely different from others. We believe that good leadership and good government is about the people. So, rather than spending our time carrying delegates and putting them in one hotel and giving them stipends like every other aspirant will be doing now, we have taken a different approach. We believe that we should be out on the field and we have been going from village to village, meeting delegates in their environment, trying to fix their problems. We are about to provide water to some communities in the central zone. We believe that this is the most efficient method of reaching the delegates. We don’t have as much money as the state government because they have not used the money given to them to do what they are supposed to do; salary payment, the schools, infrastructures in the state is worse than it has ever been because the government is trying to save the money they have towards election. So, for every one naira you give to a delegate, the government can afford to give them one thousand more. So, because you cannot match them, your strategy has to be different. We believe that the way to accomplish this is by appealing to the heart of the delegates by seeing them in their environment, understanding their problems and helping them to overcome such challenges. They will understand that a government that looted all their money and give some of it back to them is just looking for their votes and that it will be one day in four years that such will happen. They will come to the realisation that you need a government that understands your problems and has seen your environment and is willing to bring people from your community on board and develop your environment. That is the real government which is all inclusive. This is the first time that Nigeria is actually having an all-inclusive government. That is why we adopt a simple and plain strategy and we are confident. That is why we tell everybody our strategy. Majority of the aspirants are too old and if they try to do what we are doing in one week, they will die. We know that we are the only ones in position to accomplish this and we are doing it on a daily basis. We have been on the field doing just that.

What has been your pedigree in politics or are you trying to rely on the popularity of your late father?

First, a lot of people have asked what I have to offer and whether I want to ride on the glory of my late father? The truth is that I am an individual; according to the Nigerian constitution, I have met all the requirements to run for office. It is also an unavoidable truth that the greatest leader ever to come out of Kogi State is Prince Abubakar Audu. I will not shy away from what is strength because I have had tutelage under the greatest leader Kogi State has ever produced. I am aware of the plans he made for the state and his relationship with a lot of people. So, we will use this to the advantage and benefit of the people. But I am my own person; I have my own principles. I hope to build on the legacies of the late Prince Abubakar Audu. I will not deny that I come from that legacy. If we see something that is great, we should have the habit of building on it rather than saying it should be a disadvantage. I will not deny that he has left some legacies which have projected me. Other than that, I am not his only hair because we are a huge family. What differentiates me from others is what I have learnt from him and the ability to understand the grassroots, being able to go there and understand the resources available there and being able to carry a lot of people on board. It is also knowing the right person for the right job and empowering them to do the job. That is what leadership is and that is the qualities that I have learnt over the years. In addition to my professional experience, I am an entreprenuer and has worked in different areas. That has enabled me to understand the difference between the private sector and the government and why government fails to accomplish its tasks. A lot of people in government have not been in business and so don’t understand the challenges that people in business face. We have built international networks over the years that will enable us harness the resources in Kogi State. So, we are ready because we have the experience, the tutelage and believe that when we set our mind to a task, in spite of the challenges, we will accomplish it.

The incumbent is of your youth bracket. If you have to access him, would you give him a plus and what do you think you can do better than him?

Yes, the current governor is a young man, but he is not our representative. The current governor is a man. No one said that men cannot rule. It is unfair to say he is a representative of the youth because no young person selected him and said this is our representative. No Kogite voted for him. There is no single Kogite alive or dead that voted for the current governor. The governor accidentally, through an act of God and providence made it there. Unfortunately, because he did not understand what was needed to get there and was not part of the people who brought this victory, he was not part of the people who fought the incumbent for this; he misused the opportunity. He got rid of all the people that worked for it. In life, there is a simple rule. If you don’t work for something, you don’t know the value of it. This is exactly what has happened. He didn’t work for it and so, he does not understand the value. Now, the young have gathered together and picked one person and we know that Kogi State is our last chance. If you don’t get it right in Kogi State, the door will forever be shut to every young Nigerian because they are going to use Kogi State as an example on why young people shouldn’t be in leadership. If you talk about young people in government, people will tell you, look at Kogi State. Something as basic as salaries, he could not pay for over 40 months. But this is not a consequence of being young. We have a lot of people under our employment and we pay them. There are quite a number of young people around the world who employ people and pay them. This is the function of somebody who is not prepared for leadership and we are ready to change him and we are going to change him shortly. We will be ready to replace him, but will welcome him back to the fold because we believe that the era of witch hunting the previous administration should stop. We are ready to give him amnesty if he returns a lot of the missing money from the Paris Club refund and the bailout funds and other resources of the state that have gone missing. If he is willing to return them, we are willing to give him free passage because we are not after jailing anyone.

There are about three or four Audus from the same family that have indicated interest to contest the governorship seat. Why so many of you from the same family and don’t you think that is a minus?

At the end of the day, we had a strategy because we realised that a house divided against itself cannot stand. When you appear weak and divided, the opposition becomes comfortable. As you can see, only one Audu has picked the form, there is only one Audu form. That form that I picked up is for every single Audu and every single Kogite and every civil servant that has been unpaid, every taxi driver in Abuja that is a graduate and from Kogi State. That form that we picked is the only form that truly represents all of us. Unfortunately, there is also propaganda from the opposition who specialises in projecting that the family is in disarray. They are projecting that some people desperately wants it. But that is not the case because since I picked the form, no other Audu has picked the form. What you have been following is propaganda, but it’s ok. The opposition should continue to focus on us while we will continue to focus on the task ahead. At the end of the day, we hope to get victory.

Your late father had an idea of getting the state House of Assembly to pass a law institutionalising rotational governorship among the three zones in the state. What is your view about this?

I will give you a little history that many people are unaware of. When Kogi State was created, before Prince Abubakar Audu became the governor, four people came together from the west and said that the west has had power in Kwara State as well as the central and the only people who has not had power was the east. So, there was a pact for the west to support the east on condition that power will return to the west. That was the original plan. Unfortunately, the military came and truncated the Third Republic. When the Fourth Republic started, the pact was again put in place, but before his tenure was completed, the old PDP had its way in collaboration with INEC and again, it was truncated. In 2015, he had the same arrangement, promising to deliver power to the minority and gave his life to accomplish that. Unfortunately, it wasn’t how it was agreed to, but power shifted all the same. Now, we have to re-enact similar pact now that we have an incumbent. As honour bound my father, so will honour bound me to my commitment to the west. I believe that Kogi State stands on a tripod and two out of that tripod has benefited and now, it is left for the third to benefit. Now, in enacting a law to institutionalise power shift, honestly, I believe that there has to be a better way for future generational leadership. I think that this country has not grown leaders. I don’t want to call names, but the gentleman that contested for the presidency and didn’t win is spending billions in court today. Why not spend those billions on training young leaders and preparing them for the battle of leadership.  No one is doing that and because they don’t do that, it has been challenging. We only have one leader in Nigeria who has really empowered young people and that person is Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I wish we have more leaders like that who will empower the next generation of leaders. So, rather than a law that states that you should transfer power based on region, we can set a law that will take people from the three regions into an institution that will train them to attain leadership position. But I think we should go for quality rather than geographical location. It is however not something I can sit down here and say I will enact because a law takes many things into consideration; one of which is that people will have to sit down and agree on the modalities. So if I tell you that I am going to enact a law, that means I am not being truthful. Any law that has to be enacted and has to do with power shift cannot originate from me. I will support anything that help power shift. I will try myself to take deputy from the west and make sure that power is transferred to the west. However, whether it is four or eight years is left for the people of the state to decide. If you look at the history of Kogi State, you will discover that we had a governor who did nine years while Audu did four years. His four years is far better than the nine years. So, it is not the duration of time you spent in office that manners.

You seem to be non-challant about the mode of primary when some aspirants are kicking. What is your take on this?

Whether direct primary, indirect primary or consensus, come August 29, we believe that we have won. We have already defeated the current governor and every other APC aspirant. I am very sure about this and it’s simple. You can see that the current governor has not been involved in any governorship election before.

  • Group protests alleged molestation of women by Imo govt

Fresh round of protest Wednesday rocked Owerri, the Imo State capital as women activists across the country protested the continued ‘molestation of women’ by agents of the Imo State government.

The protesters under the aegis of the Coalition of Women Rights Defenders (CWRD) sent a Save Our Soul message to wife of the President, Aisha Buhari over what they described as calculated harassment and intimidation of the women by the state government, especially those with different political opinions.

It will be recalled that a coalition of Igbo women and other groups had tackled the state government over the assault of the daughter of the immediate past governor of the state, Mrs. Uloma Nwosu by members of the Committee on the Recovery of Government Property set up by the state government.

The group insisted that the recent assault on the former governor’s daughter and wife of the governorship candidate of the Action Alliance (AA) and harassment of other women have forced women with different political views to live in fear.

Appealing to the President’s wife to reign in on the Imo state government to respect the Rights and Liberties of women in the state, the group accused the state governor, Emeka Ihedioha of being intolerant to the opposition.

Inscriptions on some of the placards displayed by the aggrieved women read, ‘First lady Aisha Buhari, please rescue Imo women’, ‘Imo women deserve peace and protection’, ‘we say no to harassment of women’, ‘Gov Emeka Ihedioha stop assault on our women’ and ‘women in opposition parties are no longer safe in Imo’.

According to the communique read by Lilian Enyi, shortly before the protest, the group observed that, “for the past five weeks or thereabouts, virtually all female opposition politicians in Imo state and indeed our little children have continued to live in perpetual fear, agony and trepidation as a result of the unholy and unprecedented molestation, harassment and intimidation of our people especially women by governor Ihedioha commissioned myriad Committee”.

The communique further noted that the governor “has shown disheartening disregard for women in Imo State especially and the nation in general” by his continued silence on the matter.

“Besides the attack on Okorocha’s daughter, the Recovery Committee has physically attacked appointees of the immediate past government as well as business interests of by prominent women in the state”.

They demanded among other things, “that Governor Emeka Ihedioha should within four days produce Mr. Casmir, who on the instruction of the Governor’s CSO, SP Ibe Chukwu, slapped daughter of the former governor, Uloma Nwosu for prosecution.

‘The instant stoppage of the brigandage and anachronistic technique of government property recovery currently foisted against Imo women by Governor Emeka Ihedioha.

“Immediate cessation of harassment and molestation of women in the state by the Committee on recovery of government properties, who have been visiting our various homes with thugs”.

Meanwhile, the group has also appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to protect Imo women from further attacks and embarrassment.

They enjoined the state governor to “settle down and attend to his numerous jobs of governance instead of hounding hapless women.”

  • APC youths express shock over Kwara ministerial nominees

Kwara North All Progressives Congress (APC) youths have expressed their shock and reservation on the recent ministerial nominees from the state.

The youths regretted that none of the minsters-designate hails from their senatorial district.

The youth added that “we are not in contention with the competency and merits of the nomination of Alhaji Lai Mohammed and Senator Gbemisola Saraki, but all we say is President Muhammadu Buhari should look into all of the appointments of Kwara with the tenet of equity, fairness and justice”.

Addressing reporters at the weekend in Ilorin, the state capital, spokesperson of the group Zubair Aliyu Rogun:  “We wish to express our shock and grievance with the absence of a Kwara Northerner as a ministerial nominee to the notice of the president and the general public.

“While we understand that the choice of who becomes a minister to represent Kwara State at the Federal Executive Council is the prerogative of the President, we are, however, seriously pained that this prerogative did not consider the peculiar circumstance of Kwara State vis a vis power sharing since 1999 to date; federal appointments and the 2019 electoral performance analysis among the three senatorial district of Kwara State.

“In view of the foregoing, we most humbly urge the President as a father of all, to always take equity, fairness and justice in Kwara’s case into a greater consideration going forward.

“The appointments ratio of Kwarans at the federal level showed that Kwara Central have 62 per cent Kwara South with 30 per cent and Kwara North is just eight per cent.”

  • Three more hurdles set for would-be ministers

For ministerial nominees, the battle for cabinet seats is not yet over, despite the appearance of some of them before the Senate.

They have three more hurdles to cross before they can be confirmed minister. They are:

    • verification of credentials of each of the 43 nominees;
    • a voice vote on each nominee to determine the final decision; and
    • consideration of petitions against some of the nominees.

The Senate has received a petition against a nominee, who is said to be a  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) financier. Some All Progressives Congress (APC) are up in arms against their opposition colleagues on the issue.

PDP senators are, however, intensifying their lobby to allow the nominee from the Southsouth to scale the hurdles on merit because he has defected to the APC.

Senators spent the weekend reviewing the credentials of some of the nominees.

It was learnt that the outcome of the screening of the credentials will play a significant role in determining the confirmation of any nominee.

It was also gathered that weighty petitions might force the Senate to disqualify nominee.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The ministerial nominees have three more hurdles to cross. These are the screening of their credentials; review/consideration of petitions against any nominee; and the final stage of the ongoing Confirmation Hearing where the fate of each nominee will be determined by voice vote.

“We are currently reviewing the credentials of some ministerial nominees. We have noticed some discrepancies in some credentials and Curriculum Vitae of some nominees.

“The verification of the credentials is not a thing we can do as at the time they appeared before the Committee of the Whole to gauge their views on the state of the nation.

“We want to ensure conformity with Section 147(5) of the 1999 Constitution which says no person shall be appointed as a Minister of the Government of the Federation unless he is qualified for election as a member of the House of Representatives.”

Senate Leader Dr. Yahaya Abdullahi said “All Senators have the credentials of the ministerial nominees and they are screening them.”

The Senate has received a petition against a nominee from one of the states in the Southsouth.

The petition has pitted APC Senators against their PDP colleagues.

A ranking APC senator said: “We have discovered that the nominee used to be a major financier of the PDP. We believe his coming into the cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari will make him a mole.

“The haste at which our PDP colleagues are lobbying for his confirmation made the whole process suspicious. We think the President should not play into the hands of the opposition.

“Our position is that the nominee should be dropped.”

But a PDP Senator said: “We are pleading with our APC colleagues to consider the nomination of the candidate on merit but not on partisan basis or just on mere suspicion. This nominee was once in PDP and defected to APC.”

Section 147 (1) of the 1999 Constitution says: “There shall be such offices of Ministers of the Government of the Federation as may be established by the President.

“Any appointment to the office of Minister of the Government of the Federation shall, if the nomination of any person to such office is confirmed by the Senate, be made by the President.

“Any appointment under subsection 92) of this section by the President shall be in conformity with the provisions of Section 14(3) of this Constitution.”

  • Stakeholders to Buhari: Save Kogi now

The All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in Kogi State at the weekend urged President Muhammadu Buhari to save the state by withdrawing support for the second term ambition of Governor Yahaya Bello.

The stakeholders, under the auspices of Kogi Emancipation Movement (KEM), urged the President not to release “any form of budget support” to Yahaya “between now and November when the governorship election will take place.”

They warned that the party would lose the election if it fielded Bello, because “the governor had nothing on which to anchor his second term quest.”

The group in a statement signed by its Convener, Apostle Eniola Williams, said it was “strange that Buhari and other leaders of the party at both national and state level have continued to show public support for, and even endorsement of Governor Yahaya Bello.”

Read Also: How we merged to defeat PDP in 2015, by Buhari

According to it, Bello’s “only visible achievement is the obsolete street lights; even the revenue house that was commissioned by His Eminence, Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, the contractor is yet to be paid.”

The group claimed that “Contrary to a claim that Kogi State civil servants were being owed “only a few months’ salaries, the truth is that Governor Yahaya Bello does not pay workers their salaries by imposing a three-year lingering screening without end. And when he deigns to do that, he pays them in fractions and trickles. Consequently, he is owing 75 percent of state and local government genuine workers more than 40 months salaries.”

According to Williams, many Kogi civil servants “have died chasing their hard earned pay, while those who survived up to this moment are stuck between poor or little pay, or late and badly fractionalized pay.

“We therefore warn that APC will be thoroughly defeated if it fields Governor Yahaya Bello for the November 16, 2019 governorship poll in the state.

“He has done or said nothing to earn his party’s offer of right of first refusal.

“We feel strongly that the governor will not win the poll if he is fielded, but even if he could, he still should not run because of his dismal performance in his first term.”

The group cautioned President Buhari and the party hierarchy not to be deceived by Governor Bello’s assurances that he had the “tactics” to win, “such as he…deployed during the last presidential and legislative polls.”

It emphasized that “any attempt to field the incumbent governor will result in humiliating defeat for the APC as was the case in Adamawa and Bauchi States earlier in the year. “

The group urged the President, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, APC Chairman Adams Oshiomole, National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, “stalwarts from the state like Hajiya Salamatu Baiwa, Barrister Babatunde Irukera, Folasade Joseph” … to ensure that “a governor so unpopular…is not allowed to belittle the flag of the party by becoming its standard-bearer. “

The statement added: “The millions of people from Kogi are hopeless and helpless and their fate is in the hands of these people and what they do to save the state and repair their own reputation.  History and judgment await all in the future for actions or inactions.”

  • Anambra APC issues ultimatum to national body

FRONT line members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, on Friday issued one –year ultimatum to the national body to improve the fortunes of the members or have the party go into extinction in the state.

The party faithful issued the threat during an interactive roundtable meeting with Vice President Yemi Osibanjo in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

Former member of the Federal House of Representatives, Chief Fort Dike, said APC members in the state have been hungry, angry and ashamed at the way they are being treated.

“This is the first time since I joined politics in 1979 that members of the ruling party would be so relegated. Party democracy is never run by gangs, cliques or cabals,” he said.

He as consequently carried shoulder high as the audience went into an uncontrollable applause. Dike further lamented that although the APC is at the centre, the members in the state are all in pains, suffering bitterly and gnashing their teeth.

”It’s like the members, especially in the state are being deceived, as there were no jobs, no appointments or any way of carrying the people along,” he said.

A key national board member of the party, Chief Olisa Onyeka, in his presentation requested for 400 board appointment slots for the state.

“Anambra has only 326 electoral wards and if each ward gets one slot, it would go a long way to buoy the electoral fortunes of the party in the state immensely and even win the governorship in next poll.”

He alleged that the party has been turned to a regional party by the way it’s being administered, adding:

“The way the party and the federal government affairs are being run have rendered APC a regional party.

We have been so sidelined in the scheme of things that it is really in doubt whether any of the leaders is thinking of how to shore up the party in the state and zone.”

Onyeka went further to give the APC leadership a one year ultimatum to change and improve on the welfare of her members in the state or there would be no more APC in the state. He said that while the party prides itself on “Next Level”, it’s “Last Level” in the state.

Former Deputy Speaker of the state, Mike Ugwa ,wondered why key policies and programmes of the APC including Trader Moni, Schools Feeding and other such programmes were handed over to opposition parties.

He said it has brought a lot of shame and disdain to members of the party. The Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says he is confident that Anambra State would join the All Progressives Congress (APC) train during the 2021 governorship election in the state.

He stressed that party members must first work as a unit to dislodge the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the election.

  • Olakunrin died serving the poor, says Tinubu

THE National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Friday described the late Mrs Olufunke Olakunrin as a woman of exceptional character.  He urged Nigerians to emulate her virtues.

At the commendation service held for her at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, he said Olakunrin gave her best to humanity.

According to him, Olakunrin was closer to the ordinary people than the rich and the mighty, noting that she did her best to better lives of those who came her way.

He said the deceased was full of compassion and quick to forgive those who crossed her path.

“To know Funke is to know an exceptional human being. People will also attest to her goodness and nobleness. She cared for the poor more than she cared for the rich. She came to be an honour to her parents any family.

“This bright star was taken from us in the most terrible way.

“Funke and I shared great moments and I benefitted immensely from her wisdom. This bright star was taken away from us in a very  terrible manner.

“I pray that the Almighty God will give the family and the father the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”

Speaking, Pastor Tunde Kolade said the late Olakunrin did not die in vain, noting that all must make their paths clean.

“We should be prepared to meet our maker. Those of us who are still alive still have every opportunity to change in order to occupy the mansion our Lord has prepared for us.

“It will not be healthy for us to suffer here and suffer after we quit this vicinity. We must strive to do what is good and godly because nobody knows when the trumpet will blow,” he said.

Present at the event were Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel; Afenifere chieftain, Ayo Adebanjo; former Managing Director, News Agency of Nigeria, Akin Osuntokun; Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode; APC chieftain, Pius Akinyelure;  Hon. Jide Benson and others.

  • Edo Assembly rejects Reps’ moves to disrupt its activities

The Edo State House of Assembly has rejected moves by the House of Representatives to disrupt activities  in its chamber, calling on the Inspector General of Police and heads of the Department of State Services (DSS), the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to respect a subsisting court order restraining them from interfering in the activities of Edo House of Assembly.

Speaker of the Edo House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Frank Okiye, said this in a statement he issued in Benin City on Wednesday, following reports of an order by the House of Representatives to seal up the Edo House of Assembly.

Okiye said: “It has come to our knowledge that the Ad-hoc Committee of the House of Representatives investigating issues surrounding the inauguration of the Edo State House of Assembly has recommended that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Department of State Services (DSS) should seal up the Edo Assembly.”

The Speaker noted that “Considering what we came to know in the course of this process, the recommendation of the Ad-Hoc committee does not come to us as a surprise.

“For example, the chattered plane marked 5N FCT, which brought the committee members to Benin City was paid for by the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who is a major party in the disagreement.”

He further said: “Also, the younger brother to the National Chairman, Seid Oshiomhole, in a recent leaked audio conversation, revealed the underhand dealings in Abuja regarding the matter. He stated that Oshiomhole and his proxies have been having meetings with the committee members and other actors in the issue in Abuja and dolling out money to ensure the issue goes in their favour.”

Rt. Hon Okiye maintained that “With all these, it was clear that the ad-hoc committee was up to no good. Their report was always going to be biased.

“Moreover, we want to draw the attention of the general public and the police to a subsisting court order restraining the Police, headed by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu; the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Department of State Services (DSS) and their agents,  from interfering in the affairs of the Assembly, as the House has been going about its activities peacefully and without rancour.”

He advised that “The National Assembly must take note that they are expected to act as agents of peace and not merchants of crisis. Edo State has always been peaceful and any attempt for them to carry out this order will certainly disrupt the peace that is currently being enjoyed in the state.”

The Speaker stressed that, “In a time like this in which the nation is being engulfed in one form of violence or the other, it is unfortunate that the House of Representatives is seen to be promoting violence and exacerbating the tension in the country.”
