  • Senators intensify lobby for juicy committees

With the apparent resolution of the contentious positions of Senate principal officers, the battle appears to have shifted to lobbying for juicy committees.
It was also learnt on Sunday the list of members of Senate Selection Committee, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs and the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, are ready.

The three committees, including Senate Committee on Public Accounts, which is normally chaired by the opposition, are statutory committees.

The implication of the list of members of the committees being ready is that Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, is likely to announce names of the members of the panel on Tuesday at the resumption of plenary.
The composition of committees by the Selection Committee headed by Senate President, observers say, is a major banana peel, Lawan should properly navigate.

Findings showed that as lobby for committees exacerbate in the Upper Chamber, “no senator wants to be left out.”

The class ‘A’ committees including Senates Services, Appropriation, Finance, Petroleum (down and upstream), Customs, NDDC, Maritime, Police Affairs, Communications, Power and Steel Development and few others, are said to be hotly chased by senators.

The lawmakers are said to be leveraging on their link and relationship with some “highly placed persons” in the Senate to make case for themselves.

It is gathered that the struggle for committee positions would get fiercer in the upper chamber after the possible release of names of principal officers on Tuesday.

All Progressives Congress (APC) Senators are said to be banking on their majority status in the Senate to chair most of the committees.

Some APC Senators who played prominent roles in the emergence of Lawan as Senate President, are expected to be “compensated” with chairmanship or membership of class ‘A’ committees.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senators on the other hand, are said to have been “rallying to the Abuja home of the anointed minority leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, to stand in for them.

A North Central Senator, who spoke to our reporter on condition of anonymity, did not see anything wrong in lobbying for committees.

He said: “Lobbying is the game of politicians. There is nothing wrong with lobbying because that is the way you get things done in parliament.

“It is only that in this clime, people read a lot of negative meanings into lobbying. You lobby to serve in a committee you feel your legislative functions can be better served not necessarily for monetary gains.”

He also dismissed the idea of juicy committees insisting that “all committees are equal.”

Baring last- minute changes, a former Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Admau will be announced Senate Leader tomorrow while the Ondo North Senator Ajayi Borrifice, will be declared Deputy Senate leader.

A former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, (Abia north) may also be pronounced Senate Chief Whip while Yahaya Abdullahi (North west) may emerge Senate Deputy Chief Whip.

  • Justify confidence reposed on you, APC supporters urge Buhari

Supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who are indigenes of Ondo state in the United Kingdom(UK) have sought a permanent relief for Nigerians who they noted, are presently facing economic hardship.

They urged President Muhammadu Buhari to use his second term in office to put smiles on the faces of the masses supporters.

In a statement signed by its chairman,Julius Adeyeye, Secretary, Olu Esho and Publicity Secretary, Fola Olagbegi appealed to the President to justify the confidence reposed in his administration which necessitated the massive votes he garnered at the polls to retain his position of another four-year time.

Besides, the APC stalwarts urged the president to carefully constitute the next federal cabinet with much emphasis on next level agenda to ensure adequate security to life and property, reduction of poverty level as well as provision of food security in Nigeria.

It hailed the smooth transition of leadership at the National Assembly and peaceful inauguration of Buhari/Osinbajo second term.

According to the group, the successful completion of the first four-year in spite of all odds would ginger unprecedented breakthrough in the ongoing dispensation.

The APC supporters in the diaspora noted with delight that Nigeria now has a dedicated leadership in the two legislative chambers in Abuja with Senator Ahmad Lawan as Senate President and Hon.Femi Gbajabiamila as Speaker,House of Representatives.

They expressed optimism that the duo would provide robust leadership and national service devoid of selfish interest unlike in the last eighth assembly.

The group also rejoiced with Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu for the smooth transition at the Ondo State Assembly, urging him not to relent in providing impactful governance to the citizenry in the state.

They pledged its commitment to support his administration in order to uplift the state in all facets of life.

The party men also promised to rally round Akeredolu’s government in its bid to make the state, an industrial hub of the Southwest.

  • APC suspends lawmaker-elect in Edo

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Uhunmwode local government area of Edo State has suspended Hon. Washington Osifo for breach of article 21 (A) of the party’s constitution. Osifo is one of the 13 lawmakers-elect allegedly backed by former Governor Adams Oshiomhole accused of refusing to present themselves for inauguration as a member of the Edo State House of Assembly.

Some party leaders in Uhunmwode had last week issued ultimatum to Osifo to present himself before Speaker Frank Okiye to be sworn-in, arguing that the constituency could not afford its representative to be absent at plenary.

A communiqué issued at the end of an enlarged meeting of APC in Uhunmwode and signed by 35 party executives and leaders said that Barr. Osifo was suspended over actions that clearly violated Article 21 (a), (iii) and (iv) of the Constitution of the APC 2014, as amended.

“We the concerned executives of the party hereby referred to the meeting held on June 8th, 2019, advised Barr. Washington Osa Osifo not to go against the rules of our party constitution.

We have looked into the activities of Barr. Washington Osa Osifo, which were a clear violation of Article 21(A), (III) and (IV) of the constitution of All Progressives Congress (APC) 2014 as amended, the local government and ward executives considered the chairman’s brief based on the committee’s report.

Reacting to the suspension, Osifo said the leaders that signed the communiqué have earlier been suspended by a majority of party members. According to the lawmaker, Mr. Charles Idahosa who convened the meeting was not a member of the APC, having stepped aside from APC activities in 2017.

“I have not seen where Charles Idahosa said he has returned to the APC. The suspension is laughable because it cannot stand. They think it is their prerogative to own the APC. I challenge them to state what they have done for Uhunmwode people. I will never boot lick. What exactly have I done? Is it my courage to speak truth to power and reject minority rule in the Edo State House of Assembly,” he said.

  • APC breaks deadlock, picks NASS officers

The All Progressives Congress (APC) appears to have broken the deadlock over the choice of its remaining principal officers in the National Assembly.

After several weeks of intense horse trading and media speculations, the leadership of the party on Friday night resolved to concede the position of House of Representatives majority leader to Kano State in the Northwest.

It asked the Kano Caucus of the party in the House to handle the situation following the tough contest for the position by ex-Chief Whip, Ado Doguwa and Goro Aminu Suleiman.

The APC pacified the South-East with the positions of Senate Chief Whip and House of Representatives Deputy Leader.

Ex Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu was given the nod to become Senate Chief Whip, while Nkeiruka Onyejeocha got the backing of the APC as Deputy Leader of the House.

Onyejeocha holds the record of a fourth term lawmaker and the only female principal officer.

Some APC senators and members of the House are said to have grumbled over alleged imposition of candidates on them as principal officers.

They said the party ought to have zoned the positions, and allow each geopolitical caucus to decide.

It was unclear last night if the lawmakers would accept the decisions of the party or not when the National Assembly resumes on Tuesday.

Investigation revealed that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC met for hours on Friday night before agreeing on zoning formula and recommending candidates.

For the House of Representatives, the party zoned the Majority Leader to Kano in the Northwest (being contested by ex-Chief Whip, Ado Doguwa and Goro Aminu Suleiman); Deputy Leader, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha (Southeast); Chief Whip, Peter Akpatason  (Southsouth) ; and Deputy Chief Whip, M. T. Monguno (Northeast).

In the Senate, the remaining principal officers are Sen. Abdullahi Adamu (North-Central); Deputy Senate Leader, Sen. Ajayi Borrofice (Southwest); Chief Whip, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu (Southeast); and Deputy Chief Whip, Sen. Yahaya Abdullahi (Northwest) who was the chairman of  the Ahmad Lawan Campaign Council.

A reliable source in the party said: “The party gave the lawmakers ample time to build consensus and what we did was to design zoning formula and recommend candidates for some offices based on aggregate feelings.

“We know that all Senators and House members can be principal officers. We looked at the need for justice, fairness and loyalty to the party. We conceded the Senate Leader to Sen. Abdullahi Adamu because of his loyalty to the party when it was rough and his selflessness in sacrificing everything to lead the Parliamentary Support Group (PSG) which staved off impeachment plot against President Muhammadu Buhari in the 8th National Assembly.

“We tried to accommodate the Southeast by conceding the positions of Chief Whip in the Senate and Deputy Leader in the House to the zone.

“Out of the two senators from the Southeast, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu has had legislative experience more that ex-Governor Rochas Okorocha, who is a rookie senator.

“It is not an imposition at all. For instance, most APC members of the House are in support of Onyejeocha as Deputy Leader and those in the North-East caucus have reached a gentleman agreement that any office slot for the North-East should go to Monguno. Onyejeocha also represents gender balance among the principal officers.”

Responding, the source added: “We could not agree on House Leader but the party was able to micro-zone it to Kano State from among the states in the Northwest. It is left to Kano Caucus to choose between ex-Chief Whip, Ado Doguwa and Goro Aminu Suleiman.

“Fortunately, we have 24 members from Kano; they will go and vote to choose who becomes the next House Leader.

“We have tried our best as a party, we hope that our lawmakers will see themselves as members of one family and allow these recommended candidates to lead them in the two chambers.”

The source also admitted that the party has already informed both the President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmad Lawan and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila.

“We have consulted these principal officers, “the source added.

But grumblings keep from some governors, Senators and members of the House of Representatives.

A ranking Senator said: “It is sad that we were not consulted by the party. We only expected the APC leadership to zone the offices to geopolitical areas and the lawmakers be allowed to choose the principal officers.

“We are really unhappy that the party decided to impose principal officers on us. Let them gauge our mood, they will see that we are agitated.”

Another Senator from the Northwest said: “Some experienced hands who can assist Lawan to succeed have been left out. The APC leadership did not place priority on merit, they prefer mediocrity.

“We have ranking Senators who are versatile with rich legislative background.”

A ranking member of the House said: “The APC ought to have lived up to its pledge to leave lawmakers to decide House principal officers. This culture of imposition will not help the future of the party.

“It is a common knowledge that we all prefer Monguno as our House Leader. He suffered with Gbajabiamila in 2015 but they are now changing the narrative by claiming that the President of the Senate cannot come from the North-East and the House Leader from the same zone.

“We will surely meet on Tuesday in the House.”

  • Afenifere demands free education, security, jobs, others

Yoruba leaders on Tuesday renewed their call for true federalism as the recipe for peace and progress in Nigeria.

Under the auspices of Afenifere, the frontline socio-political  group led by Second Republic Senator Ayo Fasanmi, the leaders tabled their demand during a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

At the meeting were All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) Board Chairman Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye; former Ogun State Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba; former Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi; Senator Dayo Adeyeye; Chief Pius Akinyelure; APC Southwest Woman Leader Mrs. Kemi Nelson and former Osun State Deputy Governor Mrs. Titi Laoye- Tomori.

Among other issues of national interests raised by the group are: security, education, youth employment and power supply.

The five-point demands were read by Senator Durojaiye.

He said: “Please permit us, Mr. President, to submit our humble request of the following five major issues of paramount importance to Southwest Nigeria in particular and the unity, progress and happiness of the entire country in general.

    • Security: The huge cost not-withstanding, it may be considered worthwhile to take a bold step in combating crime and improving on security by improving on the apparent shortage of the manpower in the police and by extending control of the police from the state to local government level.

“By this, we humbly suggest that Mr. President should reflect deeply and consider recruitment, training, equipment and deployment of Nigerian Police on the basis of 774 local government areas listed in the First Schedule of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Added to this is training the general public on the need to improve on their individual vigilance and awareness of movement of strangers passing through or moving into their neighborhood. Imbibing such habit and practice will be a tremendous help or service to the police and other security agents as regards ‘Intelligence’ support, especially now that must people have access to individual means of communication (telephone handsets).

“Mr. President Sir, please permit me one more observation on the issue of security. In apparent desire to supplement your efforts, the newly elected Governors of Western Nigeria extraction, have this very day, Tuesday the 25th June 2019, held a meeting in Ibadan to map out strategies to eradicate kidnapping and violent attacks. They and other states will surely need more financial subvention and support.

    • Education: Free universal and compulsory education had been practised with remarkable success in some parts of Nigeria in the past. Mr. President may consider re-introducing the programme and making it compulsory at all levels and all over the country as a lasting gift to Nigeria in his final term in office. Such a bold step, though very expensive, will revolutionise and catapult the entire nation to the next higher level
    • Youth employment: One of the obvious advantages that will accrue from Education Programme referred to in paragraph 2 above which will include basic, technical, skill acquisition, digitalisation and ICT programmes will be to open wide gates to youth employment in Nigeria and in the diaspora.

“Thank you, Mr. President, for re-introducing history in our school curriculum. By doing this, you have told us fellow-Nigerians a proverb of world-famous Roman senator, lawyer and orator Marcus Tulius Cicero. He said and I quote ‘not to know what happened before you were born is to live the life of an infant forever!’

    • Federalism: We seriously recommend clinging to the spirit and letters of our Federal Constitution. This is one sure way of achieving the desired goal of unity even in diversity, mutual respect, tolerance and giving true meaning to the opening phrase of our Constitution that is, ‘We the people’.

”We will be a greater nation if we sincerely practise true Federalism and think and act as Nigerians rather than as champions of the smaller units we were born into.

“Our big size is an asset worthy of preservation. Good examples of big size, hard work and prudent spending are the USA, China and India. It is not with violence or hate speeches but with mutual trust, self-respect and tolerance that we will speedily achieve the lofty destiny of this great country, Nigeria.

    • Power supply and agriculture: We have already commended your Administration on its remarkable achievements in the field of agriculture.

“But the country asks for more, especially in the field of afforestation, irrigation and revival of those agricultural products, like cocoa, groundnut, cotton, palm products and processing them for domestic consumption and export as Malaysia which borrowed seedlings from us has now gone far ahead of us.

“As for electricity, we are aware of your efforts which must be more than doubled to improve on the pace of industrialisation, productivity and more comfort for all Nigerians.”

Durojaye also said that the group was at the State House to rejoice with the President and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for their re-election for a second term in office and the recognition of June 12 as Democracy Day.

He said: “We are proud of our contributions to your victory through the Yoruba summit held at the University of Ibadan International Conference Centre on January 29, 2019.

“There, we passed a well-applauded motion, urging all the people of Western Nigeria origin of voting age to vote for your re-election by virtue of your people-oriented and welfarist APC political programmes and performance.

“We are happy the people complied. Attached to this script is a copy of our motion for your support and congratulatory message published in The Nation newspaper of 28th May, 2019.

”We are also here to commend Your Excellency for your recognition of June 12 as a landmark in the political history of Nigeria and for naming the National Stadium in Abuja after Chief MKO Abiola, the hero of Nigeria’s pro-Democracy struggle.

“We are equally glad to note and commend Your Excellency for your efforts to empower the 36 States in Nigeria to have control of the police as a measure of improving security and for your giant stride in the field of Agriculture, social intervention, revival and modernization of rail transportation, continuing efforts to complete the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway among other achievements.”

Responding, the President disclosed what informed the actions he took on the former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, saying the former CJN failed to disclose the foreign currencies found in his accounts as required by law.

He said: “On fighting corruption, you know it. Again I don’t mind repeating myself, even though I sound like a broken record. As a military head of state, I took everyone to prison and pronounced them guilty until they could prove themselves innocent.

“We put tribunals in all geo-political zones and they investigated those who were in charge of government money and took all of them to prison until they explained what happened to government’s money.

“Even I was detained; this is Nigeria. I attempted three times up to Supreme Court and winning the fourth time, thanking God and technology, I am now qualified to be a solider and a politician.

“What I do now is when a person cannot justify what he has or fails to declare as the constitution specifies, some of them swear to Almighty God that their property doesn’t belong to them until we show them their bank accounts and their companies, then we have some peace.

“So, we are recovering as much as we can under the system and this time around I said the properties will be sold and the money put in the treasury.

“The last time they were given back their properties, but this time around whoever comes after me, no matter how generous he is, he cannot take money from the treasury, give it to individuals; it will be impossible.

“But anybody who cannot account for what he has and for refusing to declare, we will have to do something about it.

“I will tell you as Afenirere, that was why I had to deal, though reluctantly, with the former Chief Justice. Because there were millions of dollars, euros, not to talk of naira, which were not declared.

“I wonder what sort of conscience some of us have, how can you sit and preside and lock people up for years and even sentence some to death and yet you are not doing what the constitution said you should do by occupying that vital institution.”

On security, Buhari said: “What was happening in the Northeast and is still happening to some degree in the north central or the south west, it’s  true that we have made some progress but there are still some problems and those problems we are trying to solve them within our physical and material resources.”

The President identified agriculture as one of the ways to gainfully engage the army of able-bodied youths in the North.

He said: “That we did by providing inputs, fertilizers at half the price that it used to be … and importantly making it available throughout the country.”

Speaking to State House reporters,  Asiwaju Tinubu said: “The essence of the meeting is to thank the President, congratulate him on the election and the first step on the security of the country to really see a way out to stem any speech of hate; intolerance across the nation and look at the problem of security holistically and from the grassroots level; including the fact there is a shortage of police personnel and there is the need to look at the recruitment from 774 local government areas and be able to effectively have information; it takes time to train people; you equally create employment from such an action;  I mean employment for the people and strengthen security intelligence from the grassroots. Those are the areas of discussion.”

On the promised “Next Level” mantra of the Buhari administration, Tinubu said: “The NEXT Level is broad. You have economic progress that we are working for as a party; we have the diversity of the economy itself; we have the various scale of thinking that the Economic council will have to bring about; the infrastructural deficit; poverty, security; those are the things that we will put emphasis on; you know it; I know it.

“There is infrastructural deficit across the country and without infrastructure, you cannot galvanise the economy. You have the question of electricity that is critical to industrialisation and economic growth.”

On the support given to President Buhari by Yoruba elders, Tinubu said: “Sure, I don’t want to be clannish or sectional; the question is that we want to build a nation and always believe in our diversity for prosperity not from adversity and progressives like the president will join hands to build the country.

“No matter what, we have nothing but one country and that is the only way that we can stimulate growth and understanding among various nationalities; it is not by division; it is not be promoting religious conflict; religious differences; nobody has control when they were born; what they will be, how they will be raised and how their fate will affect their lives and we must remove that from our political setting; set it aside, build a nation and concentrate on trust and development.”

  • APC support groups to Buhari: beware of enemies masquarading as supporters

SOME supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC), under the auspices of the Assembly of APC Support Groups, on Wednesday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to be wary of those masquerading around him as supporters.

They warned that such people might be out to portray his government in bad light.

According to the groups, such ‘masqueraders’ who they claimed are close to the President, have been trying to give the impression that President Buhari was not in charge of the government, but working on the dictate of a few persons.

They staged solidarity for the President on the streets of Abuja yesterday.

The rally was a reponse to an earlier protest on Monday by another group on the platform of Concerned APC Stakeholders, alleging that a cabal had hijacked the government and asking the President to take over the “driver’s seat” of his government as he the one elected by Nigerians.

Matching from the Unity Fountain to the main gate of the Presidential Villa, the group said “blackmailers” were out to tannish the image of the government, adding that the achievement recorded so far by the government was made possible because the President was in charge of his government.

They displayed various placards listing the achievements of the current administration and declaring that no one else is in charge of the government except President Buhari.

In a letter submitted to the Presidency, the rally’s convener, Dr. Paul Dowells Essen, said: “The sabotage within the corridor of power is becoming more alarming with the recent sponsored campaign against Mr. President under the guise of protesting against Mamman Daura, Ismaila Isa Funtua and Abba Kyari.

“We are members of the governing APC; we are pro-democracy, we are pro-Buhari and we believe in your leadership qualities and strength of governance as you continue to sail the affairs of this entity called Nigeria.

“As a people, we agreed to stand and defend democracy, which we did for 16 years before clinching to power. The sacrifice of every individual is commendable, before, during and after the elections.

Read Also: Buhari vows to end farmers/herders clashes

“We observed that, the two persons mentioned in a protest against you, Mamman Daura and Ismaila Funtua are not government appointees. They are patriotic Nigerians and must not be related with the governance of the country as Mr. President is fully in charge of the government.

“Your Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari is doing well. He is discharging his duty diligently. Of course, those who want his office are not ghosts and they are not PDP members. They are of the APC.

“While it’s the right of every individual to aspire, it should be done with every sense of respect for the office of the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Calling on the President to ignore those who earlier protested against some of his personal staff, the group said if Buhari “is not on the driver seat, we would not have enjoyed N-power, Conditional Cash Transfer, the MarketMoni.

“Mr. President Sir, you are on the driver seat, not on the passenger seat as speculated by few members of our party acting the script of a man who claims to be your supporter, your coordinator, and even the coordinator of government affairs. This shows that, the enemies are within, you must be careful such persons around you sir.

“The infrastructural architecture of Nigeria is reviving with massive road construction across the country, the anchor borrowers program which has not only increase local production of rice, but has ended the importation of expired rice into the country. Your government is rapidly eradicating poverty, empowering women etc.

“Your Excellency sir, because you are in charge of your government, we have defeated Boko Haram and have suppressed other insurrection. The implementation of the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme, engaging kidnapping and banditry in a fierce battle and we are winning the war the arrest of Evans in Lagos, and multitude of kidnappers along Kaduna road and Zamfara State to mention but few.

“Your Excellency sir, our democracy must be sustained, somebody is trying to paint your image in a bad light after  achieving so much in the last four years. We cannot fold our arms and allow few individuals ruin the Country by blackmailing Mr. President in a view to box him to the corner.”

  • Name those who went away with govt. vehicles, Oyo APC dares PDP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has challenged the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to either make public the identity of anyone in illegal possession of government property among the officials who served during the immediate past administration of Governor Abiola Ajimobi or stop spending available resources on cheap blackmail and shameful propaganda.

The administration of Engr. Seyi Makinde has been accusing some of those who served with Ajimobi of taking away government vehicles with them.

But Oyo APC said in a statement by its assistant publicity secretary, Prince Ayobami Adejumo, on Monday said that the noise about the issue of vehicles allegedly taken away by unnamed persons was a clear indication that the PDP was not prepared for the serious business of governance in the state.

“They were desperate for power and now that they have it, they do not know what to do with it. How can a serious party be comfortable with the fact that a governor it sponsored into power cannot rule out a significant action plan or blueprint but chose to dwell on mundane issues four weeks after inauguration and without any sign of promise to deliver?

“As concerned stakeholders, we have done our investigation and found out that none of our members went away with official vehicles or any government property illegally as Gov. Makinde and his party want the public to believe. Therefore, we challenge the present administration or any of its sympathizers to name all those they have established to be in possession of the said items and initiate appropriate measures to recoveries same from them.

“But if all the present administration and the PDP would prefer to do while its span runs out is to wage war against the persons of Sen. Ajimobi and other who served the state meritoriously between 2011 and 2019 under the banner of the ACN/APC, we wish them good luck. The whole has seen how governance has since gone on holiday in Oyo State and this is regrettable”. The statement said.

In the same vein, Oyo APC has advised Gov. Makinde “to resist every instinct or pressure capable of causing unrest in the state especially as it concerned sponsorship of anarchy and confusion at the local government tier. Again, the Pacesetter State should not be in the news for any wrong reason because a governor must satisfy himself or his party men.

“The current officials at the local council are a product of legitimacy and since the governor has agreed to edge them out through after his first self-help attempt failed, he should submit himself wholly to the court process without any overt or covert effort to circumvent democracy and the rule of law.

“We say no to intimidation of elected council chairmen and councillors by the governor or any of his men who are desperate to feast on the resources of local government councils as done in the past. The Appeal Court has picked July 5, 2019 for hearing of the case brought before it by the governor with a Caveat that the Status Quo must be maintained. What this means is that elected officials should not be prevented from functioning in their capacities and we expect the PDP government to be aware of this.” Adejumo concluded.

  • Oyegun: Obaseki is distracted by party

Former All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun has accused his successor, Adams Oshiomhole, of engaging in anti-party activities by creating distractions for Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Odigie-Oyegun accused the national chairman of heightening the tension in Edo State with his activities against the governor.

Reacting to the decision of the APC National Working Committee (NWC) on the crisis rocking the House of Assembly, Odigie-Oyegun said in a statement by his Special Assistant on Political Affairs, Ray Murphy, that Obaseki should be allowed to concentrate on presiding over the affairs of the state.

The former APC leader said he was yet to come to terms with the fact that Obaseki is not being distracted by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but by his predecessor, who is also the chairman of the ruling party.

Read Also: ‘Obaseki can’t intimidate us’

The statement reads: “This party must be stronger because we cannot go into the 2023 general elections with these discordant tunes, especially as President Buhari will not be contesting. We need to get our acts together. Oyegun has no personal grievances with Oshiomhole but Nigerians must know that he cannot go to equity with unclean hands.

“Today, there are all kinds of rancour coming from Edo State. They all boil down to attempt by godfather and godfatherism that is heating up the polity in the state. Obaseki is the executive governor of Edo State and he should be allowed to exercise the powers vested on him by the law. To what purpose is this idea of the APC chairman putting the state under tension?

“As a governor under the APC platform, he should be allowed to run out his tenure before they decide whether to bring him back or not. There are so much antics going on and you don’t need to be a prophet or Babalawo (diviner) to trace where they are coming from. They are coming from the APC.

“I want to think that they are all targeted at weakening the governor of Edo State. Ordinarily, the man in Edo should be given every support so that he can succeed to fend off the opposition PDP already around the corner.

“Ask anybody from Edo State what is Obaseki’s biggest distraction and they will tell you that his distraction is not whether he has governed well or not, but from his immediate predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole.

“It is very unfortunate, especially considering the fact that he is the national chairman of the same party with the governor. I have not heard that PDP or Edo leaders want to remove Obaseki. What has been trending is how his predecessor who happens to be the party chairman does want him back in the office.

“If his actions against Obaseki are not anti-party, someone should then explain to me what is anti-party. The problem of the APC is from a singular man, the national chairman who runs the party like an executive chairman. The idea of working singlehanded and inducing the party members to endorse is the problem of the party.

“Look at what is happening in the party today. When was the last time the NEC meeting was held? But when these crises came to the fore, he has called several emergency NWC meetings.”

  • Edo Assembly crisis deepens

    • Oshiomhole rejects godfather claim

    • Oyegun: Obaseki is distracted

    • APC dismisses allegation of bias

RATHER than subside, the crisis of confidence rocking the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State seems to be growing.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa Onilu, on Sunday dismissed allegations of bias levelled by the state government against the leadership of the party.

Issa-Onilu said what transpired in the House of Assembly was glaring and, therefore, needed no investigation.

He spoke even as APC National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole challenged those accusing him of playing god-father’s politics to produce their evidence.

Also on Sunday, Oshiohmole’s predecessor Chief John Odigie-Oyegun described the ruling party as the greatest problem for the Edo State governor.

The party’s spokeman, who was reacting to a statement credited to the Special Adviser on Media to Governor Obaseki that the party should have heard from both sides before taking a stand, said there was no dispute between parties, adding that if the issue was a dispute between two parties, then the party would have called for an investigation.

The party had condemned the inauguration of nine members of the State House of Assembly at about 9.30pm, leaving out majority of members, describing such action as a departure from the constitutional provision

Issa-Onilu said: “There is no dispute about the fact that nine people were involved in it. There is no dispute about the fact that what took place, took place at 9.30pm. So what is there to listen to?

“Furthermore, there is no dispute about the fact that the proclamation was not published. The constitution says you should publish and inform all members. So this is not something you need to do an investigation.

“The facts are staring you in the face. This is not a quarrel between two people. It’s when two people are quarreling about issues that you say let’s investigate. The point is, was the law followed or was it not followed?

“And there cannot be a fiat accompli in this matter. The processes are regulated by law. We are not talking of an amorphous society or secret cult. Now let me ask you, if a similar thing was done in the National Assembly, would there be the question that since it has been done what needs to happen next?

“If a foundation is faulty, you can’t roof the building. We must emphasize that processes need to be followed. We are cleaning up our processes. That is what change means to us in APC. Once processes are clean, outcomes don’t matter. Outcomes should reflect the will of the people. I don’t know how inauguration that violated every aspect of the law, tradition, norms, values could stand. If you fail an exam you re-sit.

“There is no dispute about the fact that nine people were involved, some against their will  to purport to have inaugurated the Assembly. How is it that an APC governor cannot allow people to vote? You carry people by 9.30pm and purport to have elected a speaker. The danger of that is that if you can do it for Speakership purpose, you can also do it to make law that is unpopular.”

All 24 lawmakers in the Edo state House of Assembly are of the APC. There is in dispute over who should be the Speaker, a position zoned to Edo Central.

    Oshiomhole speaks

Also at the weekend, Oshiomhole urged those accusing him of plotting to be a godfather in Edo State to provide the proof.

He was responding to a question from State House reporters in Abuja that he was masterminding the crisis in the Edo State House of Assembly because he wanted to become a godfather and to dictate what happens in the state.

Insisting that he “is a democrat”, he recalled that he fought against god-fathers in Edo politics to emerge become governor in the Southsouth state.

He also said that he would not need short-cut to sustain his position in the system.

Oshiomhole said: “What is the evidence? It’s all about accusation. The media has a duty. They have to give you the particulars of that god-father. What’s the evidence? I am a democrat.

“That I accept the credit, not only that I fought god-fathers, I launched the one-man one-vote campaign to fight against election rigging anywhere in Nigeria and by the special grace of God, under PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) with Chief Tony Anenih alive, and at his best, I won all the 18 local government areas and I won 95 per cent of the total votes cast in my second term election.

“So, Edo people know me and I know them. I don’t need short-cut to sustain my position in the system. But you know that there is nobody in Nigeria who is not open to accusations. The important thing is that he who accuses should give you proof.”

Speaking on the ongoing crisis over the inauguration of the Edo State House of Assembly, he said: “It’s about rule of law. As journalists there are questions you don’t need to ask me because you know the answer.

“You know the law provides for how the House should be proclaimed transparently. The day it’s announced, members-elect are informed of date and time for inauguration.

“These are clearly spelt out in the Nigerian constitution. And just last week (about two weeks ago), you were all witnesses to how President Muhammadu Buhari issued proclamation letter to the Clerk many days before, stating date and time of the inauguration of the two chambers of the National Assembly.

“Even while we are still negotiating to ensure that our party was not divided on the floor of the House, without prejudice to the outcome of those negotiations, the President issued proclamation because he is obliged by the constitution to do so whether he likes it or not and he did.

“He did it transparently. He has led us by example. For me, it’s very embarrassing if any state governor, particularly of APC extraction, will do anything that is less than what the constitution says and the example that our President has set.”

According to him, the proclamation was not publicised in the case of the Edo State House of Assembly inauguration.

Stressing that the members were not informed, he said that the inauguration took place at 9:30pm.

According to him, the time was what a Supreme Court judgement described as “nocturnal hours.”

He said: “Business of parliament are done transparently; they are not secret cult. Now you have 24-member House, 19 members protested. You have six and you carry people in their short knickers. Even in the House they have rules, the dress code. So, it happened in Edo, it has happened in Bauchi.

“Like Edo, Bauchi used the minority of 10 to go and proclaim the House and lock out 20 APC members and got those 10 people to elect, exactly the way Edo did with six and then co-opted other three people to become nine and even at that, it is nonsense.

“For us, these are completely illegal. And that is why we said so. If it is wrong, it is wrong; whether it is done by APC or by PDP; whether it is the chairman’s state or not. The law is blind to those sentiments. I believe by the end of the day, the solution is return to the rule of law.

“Let’s properly follow the law; let the parliament do what they have to do but people have the right to lobby for people they want and whom they prefer. This is also legitimate. Like you saw in the National Assembly, after all the lobbies, people have the right to vote and you saw them in the National Assembly conducting secret ballot.

“We have an APC senator, who, in spite of all the efforts invested by all our leaders, including Mr. President, insisted that he will contest. The law allowed him so, we couldn’t stop him. The President could have said okay, SSS (State Security Services) please find excuse to invite him for questioning the day before; put him away until the elections are over.

“But we won’t do that. That is not the change we promised. The change we promised is to try to improve in the ways public institutions are managed and how rules are implemented. I believe that it will be resolved.”

  • Why Senate Leader, others are yet to be named

THE ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is holding consultation with the its Senate caucus on modalities for the selection of the Majority Leader and other principal officers, it was learnt yesterday.

A top APC senator, who spoke on why the Senate Leader, Deputy Senate Leader, Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate have not been named, said “there is no need to worry.”

The senator, who is also a strong ally of the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, said “by the time we return on July 2nd, our party must have taken a position on who becomes what in the two chambers.”

He said that with the election of presiding officers of the two chambers, “it is taken for granted that principal officers of the two chambers will be selected to work with the presiding officers.”

The source added that the presiding officers and the principal officers will constitute the Selection Committee that will pilot the affairs of the chambers.

According to the North West senator, “everything will take shape by the time we return because the need to consult and consult widely to reduce acrimony and bad blood is ongoing.”

He hinted that whoever will emerge as Senate leader, which he described as “the soul of the Senate” will be “a product of consensus as directed by the National Working Committee of our party (APC).”

The APC leadership, he said, “is on top of the situation” and “doing what it needs to do to reduce division among possible principal officers of the two chambers.”

He added: “There is nothing to worry about,” he noted that the party will not disappoint.

On whether some people have been penciled down for the positions, he said “the front liners for the Senate Leader slot are known.”

He listed Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Senator Alliyu Sabi Abdullahi as possible choices by the party.

He said: “It is a party affair and any body the party puts forward will emerge. The party is working to prevent rancor and acrimony. Only one person can be Senate leader.

“The party will also ensure spread in order to carry all party members along.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is also preparing to selects its principal officers’ in the House of Representatives.

The opposition party has concluded its selection in the Senate with Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South) tipped as minority leader, Senator Emmanuel Bwuacha(Taraba South) deputy minority leader, Senator Philip Aduda (FCT) minority whip and Clifford Ordia (Edo Central) deputy minority whip.

The position in the House is not cleared yet.

Although it is being rumoured that PDP has settled for Kingsley Chinda, Nicholas Ossai appears not to have given up the struggle to upstage the Rivers State House member.
