  • APC will produce next Bayelsa governor, chieftain boasts

The All Progressives Congress (APC) will produce the next governor in Bayelsa State, a former Commissioner for Youths in Bayelsa State Mr. Ibarakumo Otobo has boasted.

Otobo declared: “The APC will claim Bayelsa. We are working to produce the next governor.

“We believe in the leadership of former Governor Timipre Sylva. He is the brains behind our impressive performance in the last elections and his leadership will take us to greater heights,” he said.

He said the party had shifted its focus to the December governorship election in the state following conclusion of the general elections.

Otobo said the APC performed well in the just-concluded elections in the state and was already building on the feat ahead of the governorship poll.

Otobo, who spoke in Yenagoa, alleged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) used the military to intimidate APC leaders adding that despite the excesses, he was able to win his Tombia community for his party’s House of Assembly candidate.

“In my Tombia community, we faced a lot of intimidation from the military.

“The military did not play the neutral role they were supposed to play. They were quite partisan and they supported the PDP”, he said.

Otobo commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) describing its performance in the elections as impressive.

He said the commission upped its game in all aspects of the election including logistics, timing and card reader performance.

Otobo said the APC members in his area comported themselves very well in the face of persecution and shunned violence throughout the exercise.

He said: “We have done very well in Bayelsa and I am happy that we worked together to win my community for the APC House of Assembly candidate.

“The PDP candidate came from my area but we won her. In Tombia community, we comported ourselves very well. We are a peace-loving community so we refused to be violent despite provocation.

“We have shown them that PDP is not an Ijaw party. Rather Ijaw people have the right to choose a political party of their choice.

“We have shown them that in Tombia community and in other communities in Brass, Southern Ijaw and Nembe Bassambiri, we chose the APC”.

  • Polls: Obaseki attributes victory to party, people’s power

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has attributed the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates in the March 9 State Assembly election, to the collective effort of his party, the APC and people’s power.

Obaseki disclosed this during a meeting with the expanded Edo APC caucus, at the Government House, in Benin City on Tuesday.

Speaking on the party’s outing and eventual victory at the polls, he said, “This is all about gratitude to God and all of you and the millions of our supporters, for accepting the challenge to deliver the party.”

The governor noted that the 2019 general elections have rekindled his hope in the country’s democracy and reiterated the desire to operate an all-inclusive government.

He added, “Edo will continue to align with the federal government to attract positive development to the state as the only APC-controlled state in the South-South and South-East of Nigeria. The APC and my administration will continue to run an all-inclusive government.”

For Governor Obaseki, the victory of the APC at the polls translates to more responsibilities for the political party to live up to the confidence reposed in it by the electorate.

Earlier, Chairman, Edo State Chapter of the APC, Barr. Anselm Ojezua, said the victory of the party at the House of Assembly poll showed the massive support citizens of the state have for the Obaseki-led administration, noting, “The result of last Saturday speaks volumes for what Edo citizens think about the APC and the governor of the state. It also speaks volume of the leadership of the political party.

He debunked allegations that there was rift between Governor Obaseki and theleadership of the APC, adding that “there is nothing the governor has done that the party is not in support or part of.”

Ojezua noted that the meeting was organised to review the three different elections held in the state, so as to take necessary actions.

In attendance at the expanded APC Caucus meeting with the governor were APC leaders from the three senatorial districts, including newly-elected House of Assembly members.

  • Groups laud Obaseki for leading Edo APC to victory

Following the impressive outing of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates in the Edo State House of Assembly election, Edo-based socio-political groups have applauded Governor Godwin Obaseki for leading the APC to a landslide victory.

Representatives of the groups, who spoke to journalists, said the outstanding performance of the APC in the March 9 State House of Assembly election, is not only unprecedented but goes to show that Governor Obaseki’s developmental strides and style of governance resonate well with Edo people and residents.

The Godwin Obaseki Support Group (GOSG) said Obaseki will go down in history as a governor who led the APC to landslide victory in the State House of Assembly Poll.

  • Sanwo-Olu ’ll give youths special attention, says APC youth leader

Lagos State Youth Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) Mr. Omotayo Sanyaolu yesterday assured youths of the resolve of the governor-elect, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to give special attention to them on assumption of office beginning from May 29.

Sanyaolu, in a statement, hailed youths for overwhelmingly voting for the APC during last Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections, as well as the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He assured that the confidence reposed in the party would not be betrayed.

“I want to express my heartfelt and sincere appreciation to the youth of our great state of Lagos. Thank you for coming out en masse during this electioneering period across the entire stage of campaigning, to re-elect President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and also to elect Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu and Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat into office.

“I am honoured and humbled that we have been able to experience peaceful elections despite the tension during this whole period. The people have placed their trust in all our APC candidates in the state of Lagos across all levels and I want to assure that the confidence reposed in us is well-appreciated and will, therefore, never be abused,” Sanyaolu said.

Congratulating Sanwo-Olu, Hamzat and the 40 elected members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, the APC youth leader said the numerous ideas that came out during the electioneering engagement would be fully considered and the younger ones would be given special place in the government to be formed from May 29.

  • I was confident Lagosians ’ll choose courage over fear, says Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor-elect Babajide Sanwo-Olu said he was confident that residents would choose courage over fear in the just concluded gubernatorial election.

Sanwo-Olu of All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 739,445 votes to defeat his main challenger, Mr. Jimi Agbaje of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who got 206,141 votes.

Declaring the vote as a referendum by the people of Lagos, Sanwo-Olu said that Lagosians had once again, decided that they would continue to take the path of progress that started in 1999 by voting for APC.

He said: “This election signaled more than a vote for me or any other candidate. It was a vote, a referendum, on how a state and its people would define themselves. Would we be courageous and confident enough to seek our greater place in the world? Or would we turn so scared that we spend the greater number of hours fighting each other instead of joining ourselves in productive cooperation that will uplift the lives of each of us?

“We were confident that you would choose courage over fear and select cooperation over confrontation. You made this enlightened choice in resounding and clear numbers.

“Let us be completely frank and honest so that we may quickly clear the air of those things that might pollute and soil our politics, if we allow them to linger.”

Sanwo-Olu, who made reference to some unwholesome part that played up during the electioneering process, advised political actors to sheathe their swords.

He added that the time for campaign was over and now is the time to join hands together, build peace and stronger collaboration for the benefit of the state.

Sanwo-Olu said: “There were things said during this campaign that should not have been said. And tactics employed that were shortsighted and potentially disruptive to the social accord and harmony of purpose we have enjoyed in Lagos.

“Those who tried to use ethnicity to bring discord in hopes that such tactics might bring them victory have been sorely disappointed. The election is over. I ask them to cease and desist from this unwise conduct.

“Our people are generous in spirit, compassionate at heart and as fair-minded as any people can be. Despite the challenges that we may face, our people exist in a space that is above hatred.”

Sanwo-Olu reiterated his total commitment to the unity of Lagos, regardless of gender, ethnic nationalities, political and religious differences, pledging to lead with fairness and openness.

  • Delta APC rejects governorship/House of Assembly election results

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta state has called for the cancellation of last Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state.

APC’s position was made known at a press briefing addressed by the chairman of the Delta state chapter of the party, Prophet Jones Erie, on Monday evening.

Erue accused security agents who were deployed on election duties in different parts of the state, as well as officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of conniving with agents of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to massively rig the election in favour of the PDP.

“You all witnessed an electoral process where soldiers aided PDP thugs to hijack ballot boxes and materials in collaboration with the presiding officers and thumb printed them for the PDP.

“Our people were not allowed to enter any collation centre, our agents were treated as enemies of the electoral process. The whole place was militarised against APC and results were changed at will.

“For example, at Emede Ward 5 unit 2, soldiers aided the destruction of that unit. At about 10:00am, ballot boxes and ballot papers were carted away, we managed to complete the election and at the end, APC had 4323 votes, 1134 votes for PDP House of Assembly.

“Surprisingly, the same votes were counted and they recorded 2,712 votes for the governorship for the APC and 2,702 votes for PDP. If this is the discrepancy in my own ward, it is enough prove to show that the same thing took place across the state.

“Our members were brutalised, presiding officers collaborated with PDP to undo us. In Warri South and Warri South-West, most of the materials did not get to their units”, Erue alleged.

Erue said the party would approach the Election Petition Tribunal should the electoral umpire refuse to cancel the election.

However, when reached for a response, the spokesman of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Colonel Aminu Iliyasu, said the allegations by the parties against security agencies borne out of the wrong perception of what the agencies stand for.

“People see security agencies as instruments of the state that can be used by the ruling party. The opposition parties will bash on the security agency, the ruling party will also bash on the security. The election is over, if he is not satisfied, he should go the Election Petition Tribunal,” Iliyasu said.

It however, called on security agencies to ensure that the electoral breaches that characterised the previous elections were prevented to guarantee its credibility.

” The party expresses its deep worries over the large scale cases of thuggery, intimidation, inducement, vote buying and results tinkering that the PDP deployed in its desperate bid to hold unto power.

” It calls on INEC and security agencies to ensure that the PDP adheres to the democratic tenants in the rerun.

” The party’s governorship candidate Emmanuel Jime welcomes the supplementary election and remains confident of victory when the exercise is conducted.” (NAN)
