He said: “The materials were hijacked and many of the prospective voters were injured in the process. We have reported the matter to the authorities.

“The innocent voters do not deserve the violence meted out to them. I urge the authorities to take appropriate action to bring the perpetrators to book.”

  • Harbin Kunama: Can Buratai make another difference?

It is quite heartbreaking to know the absurdity that every geopolitical zone in Nigeria, with the exception of the Southwest has its peculiar insecurity challenges. In the South-South, it is militancy; violent secessionists have their abode  in  the Southeast;  farmers/herders crises are rooted in the North central; Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast; while  the rave of the moment, armed banditry, cattle rustling, kidnappings  and killings is the latest nightmare of people in the Northwest.
And in the last four years, Nigerians in  Zamfara, Katsina and  Sokoto states in the Northwest have been major victims. What has tainted the conscience of leaders is the glaring failure of the political class in the various states to tackle these security threats. They have allowed these  violent criminality to  gain currency and stabilized into  the monster it is today. The leaders preferred to make political capital out of the daisy insecurity situation; but reality now stares everyone in the face.
This much could be inferred by the recent desperate wailing of   Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari,  who plainly begged President Muhammadu Buhari  to impose a state of emergency on  his state because of the insecurity. Likewise, his  Katsina state  Governor-colleague, Alhaji Aminu Bello  Masari,  also moaned  that,  “Today, reports I received from security agencies are all about threats of kidnapping, armed robbery and banditry. It is now a daily occurrence as no day passes without a case recorded.
It is not even rustling of cows,  but now kidnapping of people.”
Masari further paints the gory scenario in these words; “Our state is currently under serious siege by armed robbers, kidnappers and armed bandits who arrest rural people at the grassroots at will and demand ransom, which if not paid, they kill their victims.” It is painful and touchy, to say the least.
But unfortunately, at various times, the onus of taming the crises has always fallen on the shoulders of the Nigerian Army.   The truth which has failed to prick the conscience of these  political leaders in the affected states is their obvious slack, which reverses the gains the Nigerian Army makes each time the FGN permits the intervention of soldiers.
The Army’s Operation Sharan Daji in the same Northwest, in 2016 , effectively tackled  the menace of  armed banditry and cattle rustling. But  the gains were sooner reversed by the ineptitude and indifference of the state governors towards securing the lives and properties of their people.
Perhaps, some Nigerians may not be adequately informed about the severity of the scourge of armed banditry, armed robbery, kidnapping, killings and cattle rustling which have cumulatively sapped the human and economic lives of the people.  A recent report by a security analyst paints the picture dreadfully.
Quoting local sources,  in Anka Local Government Area  of Zamfara state alone, there are  an estimated  5,000  armed bandits domiciled in the area and terrorizing the people.  Now, if a single Local government area could harbor such stunning number of bandits, a census of their population in the entire state and added with the bandits in Katsina and Sokoto states would reveal staggering  and appalling figures.
It implies that the scale of violence visited on hapless, innocent citizens is significantly high.  It necessitated the launch of Operation Harbin Kunama III, commencing from April 1 – 30 June 2019. But the fundamental question is; with the horrible insecurity situation, does the COAS and henchman of the counter-insurgency operations, Lt. Gen. TY Buratai and his troops stand a chance of repossessing  Zamfara, Katsina and Sokoto states from the jaws of  armed and violent criminal gangs as done before? No doubt, Gen. Buratai  is one exceptional Army General who  doesn’t fail in any assignment,
The gallant Nigerian soldiers have never faltered in such national assignments in the past because they assume it a challenge to their ego and pride in the nation.  Incontestable records indicates that Nigerian troops have always triumphed against enemies’ of the state and the people.
Soldiers have not only decimated and defeated Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast; but they have frustrated and curtailed the capacity of fleeing remnants of terrorists from regrouping and executing co-ordinated attacks on local communities. Terrorists have been restricted to a few obscure areas  in the region, where they sneak to commit atrocious acts on the populace.
And Operation Python Dance I & II in the Southeast finally buried the ghosts of armed criminal gangs who operated as armed robbers, kidnappers and violent secession agitators.  Peace  and security has returned to the Southeast and law abiding citizens are no longer  freely molested, harassed, intimidated and gruesomely murdered by armed gangs.
Soldiers replicated similar feat in the South-South where bitter militancy disrupted the economic life- wire of Nigeria.  Several special  military interventions like “Operation Crocodile Smile,” have berthed the desired respite in the once  restive oil-rich region. And the multiplication of several militant sects have been unable to break the  resolve of soldiers  and  the security architecture erected by the Army in the region.
The violent farmers/herders skirmishes in the North Central part of the country have been served the same dosage by soldiers. Respite has descended on communities in Plateau,  Benue, Taraba and Nasarawa states, with launch of several operations like “Operation Whirl Stroke,” Harbin Kunama I & II.    Therefore, the  war on armed bandits  in the Northwest is not an exemption. And  Gen. Buratai  and his troops are prepared to go the extra mile to  dislodge the armed criminal gangs domiciled in the forests and caves of the affected states.
At the official launch of Operation Harbin Kunama III at the  1 Brigade Complex  Headquarters,  Gusau  on April 1, 2019, Gen. Buratai’s speech indicated a deep understanding of the  security threats, manifest in the  menace of armed banditry, killings, kidnappings and destructions to properties.
He said; “… the menace of banditry activities has continued to persist in some parts of the North West region and along the border areas. The unwholesome and dastardly acts of these bandits have adversely affected the socio-economic activities in these areas with attendant effect on human and economic security. It has also led to deaths and maiming of innocent people with the attendant wanton destruction of properties.”
He added;  “Harbin Kunama III is planned to mitigate the current threats to security in Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara States. Specifically, the exercise is designed to decisively eliminate all forms of banditry activities with a view to ensuring lasting peace in the affected areas. I wish to assure the good people of Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara States that the NA will carry out its constitutional mandate professionally and within the ambit of the law while adhering to the ROE(rules of engagement)”
Again, soldiers have stepped out on the podium and into the battlefields to war with another sinister security threats.  They deserve support and cooperation from  leaders and the natives, especially on information gathering.
All must know that the general elections have come and gone and it behooves on  all political actors, covert or overt  to support the Army in order  to remedy  permanently the scourge of armed  banditry and killings in the Northwest.  These politicians must allow the Army to do its job professionally and efficiently. No one should meddle into the exercise. Surely,  the sponsors of the killings  have known now that  the game  is up for good.

  • Sanwo-Olu: I am confident of victory

The Lagos governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed confidence in winning the 2019 gubernatorial elections.

Sanwo-Olu, who spoke after voting at about 10:353am, at his Lateef Jakande Avenue/Femi Okunnu, Ikoyi, lolling unit suggested that there was a was a “divine” influence in his candidacy.

He noted that he and his team had toured the nook and cranny of the state, connecting with Lagosians.

Sanwo-Olu said: “Today makes it exactly six months – it was on the ninth of September – since I collected the APC gubernatorial form, so I think it is divine.”

He added: “We are very, very confident, extremely confident with the level of work we’ve done, the level of engagement we’ve seen, with the level of interaction we’ve had that we will be successful and we’ll come out tops, but that is for INEC to determine and to announce.”

  • My name not yet on INEC list in Enugu – Ayogu Eze

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Enugu State, Sen. Ayogu Eze has urged the INEC to include his name in the Saturday governorship elections as directed by an Abuja Appeal Court.

Briefing journalists in Enugu on Friday, Eze alleged that barely eight hours to the election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had yet to include his name in the race.

Eze alleged that the removal of his name from the INEC final list of governorship candidates for the election a few days before the election was a calculated attempt to punish him and create room for INEC’s preferred candidate and party.

“Even after the Abuja division of the Court of Appeal overturned the decision of the Federal High Court which formed the basis for INEC’s action, the commission has bluntly refused to retune my name to the final list on the INEC official portal 24 hours after they were served the order of the court,’’.

He wondered why INEC was taking an apparently partisan position on a matter where they would otherwise have been impartial.

According to him, INEC is colluding with unknown forces to rob me of my victory on the Saturday March 9 election.

He alleged that the whole plan was designed to discourage his supporters and deny him victory.

Eze said that barely eight hours to the election his supporters were still confused whether they would participate in the election or not because of the development.

Meanwhile, efforts to reach Dr Emeka Ononamadu, the INEC Residential Electoral Commissioner in Enugu State for reaction failed as his mobile phone was unreachable and he did not respond to messages sent to him.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on Thursday ruled that Sen. Eze remains the true governorship candidate of the APC in Enugu State.

The court affirmed the APC gubernatorial candidate barely two days to the elections.

In His ruling over the substantive suit by Eze challenging his removal by Federal High Court, the panel of judges led by Justice Abdul Aboki upheld the prayers of Eze in which he prayed that he was the duly elected candidate of the party.

The appellate court ruled that “what happened at the lower court was a miscarriage of justice as Mr George Ogara has no case in the first place.”

He stated that “Ogara filed after 14 days of the result being published as allowed by law, so the lower court had no jurisdiction to entertain his case.”

Justice Aboki directed the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to immediately restore the name of Sen. Ayogu Eze as the candidate of the party.

  • 70 PDP members defect to APC in Ikeja

No fewer than 70 members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ikeja, Lagos, yesterday, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Led by Obanla Adewale, the PDP Youth Leader in Ikeja Ward B and a former councillorship candidate, Obatunde Akanbi Olusesi, they were received by APC Ikeja House of Representatives-elect James Abiodun Faleke at the Excellence Hotel in Ogba.

The duo and over 70 members, who defected to APC, openly tore their PDP membership cards.

They collected brooms from Faleke and waved them to the admiration of the crowd that filled the hall.

Adewale said he defected to APC due to anti-party activities of the PDP leaders in Ojodu area of Ikeja.

He said he decided to bring his followers to APC to give the party an edge over the PDP in today’s election.

“APC has never won in my polling unit. During the last Presidential and National Assembly elections, APC could not defeat us. The ruling party knows how strong I am in my ward but now that I have joined the party, I can assure the party (APC) that majority of the votes in my ward will be for APC,” he said.

Olusesi, who said he controls nine units in his ward, promised to deliver all to APC.

“I came to APC because of our leaders’ insincerity. They hobnob with APC in the night and still claimed to be PDP members in the day. Unfortunately, we are the people being used by them to be relevant. So, we decided to align with the APC. The nine polling units I delivered to the PDP at the last election will be for APC tomorrow. That’s my promise. Let the PDP leaders know now that with God and my people behind me, those nine units will be delivered for APC. I did not come to APC because of financial inducement. Nobody gave me anything but I know I will not regret joining the party,” he said.

Faleke described the duo as valuable to APC.

Their coming into our party, he said, will give us leverage over the PDP in their areas.

“We have reduced the strength of our opponents with their coming on board. They have seen the light and decided to join the progressive government. We welcome them wholeheartedly. We encourage others in PDP to join the APC and be part of the moving train,” Faleke said.

  • Wike, Amaechi in verbal war ahead polls

The Minister of Transport and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, declared yesterday that more Rivers people will die if the state governor and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nyesom Wike, gets a second term.

Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State, urged the people of the state not to cast their votes for Wike, his former Chief of Staff, accusing him of sponsoring many killings in Rivers, which, according to him, was an indication that the incumbent governor never cared about the security of the lives and property of the residents of the state.

Amaechi stated these in his Port Harcourt residence while receiving a visiting delegation of the British High Commission to Nigeria ahead of today’s governorship and House of Assembly elections.

In an interactive session with members of the party in Eleme on March 6, Amaechi, who is the leader of APC in the state and the Southsouth zone, had announced after a crucial meeting of Rivers stakeholders of APC, that they had agreed to back the governorship candidate of African Action Congress (AAC), Biokpomabo Awara, an engineer and native of Kula-Kalabari, a riverine community in Akuku-Toru LGA of the state.

On his part, Wike, a former Minister of State for Education, in a statewide broadcast, urged Rivers people to vote for candidates of their choice today.

But he accused his former benefactor (Amaechi) and the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Maj.-Gen. Jamil Sarham, of planning to unleash mayhem in the state during the elections; an allegation both of them denied, describing Wike as a propagandist and a blackmailer.

Amaechi, during yesterday’s meeting with the delegation of the British High Commission to Nigeria, said: “All Wike has done so far is killings, and he does not care about the lives of the people.

“If Wike gets a second term, more people will die. The man is blood thirsty and he wants to kill us because of his second term ambition, for the simple reason of milking the treasury of the state dry, without considering what happens to the ordinary Rivers people.

    “Stealing is in his blood.

“I wonder why Wike will be crying foul about the presence of military men in Rivers State instead of joining forces to encourage them to beef up security in the state.

“The general elections of 2015 cannot in any way be compared with the 2019 polls in terms of the security situation in Rivers State.

“Wike and his PDP members would have preferred the elections of 2015 where thugs overwhelmed the state and unleashed terror on innocent Rivers people, resulting in the loss of so many lives and destruction of valuable property across the state.

“Even my cousin was killed in front of Wike’s father’s house in Port Harcourt.”

Amaechi also stated that with the presence of the military personnel in Rivers state for today’s elections, everybody, including the APC and PDP members, would be adequately protected.

He revealed that the plan of the Rivers governor was to see the total withdrawal of military men from Rivers for him and his thugs to have a field day to kill APC members as they did in the previous elections.

The Minister of Transportation said: “You are aware that PDP’s thugs killed four APC members in Andoni LGA of the National Chairman of PDP (Prince Uche Aecondus), beheaded them and took away their bodies.

“When I was the Governor of Rivers State, I gave people assurances that my life is as important as their own lives.”

On his choice of endorsing the governorship candidate of AAC in today’s election, Amaechi said: “My party is not on the ballot for tomorrow’s (today’s) election, and you know that I have the right to vote. That is why I will vote for the governorship candidate of AAC.”

The head of the delegation, Louis Edwards, had earlier said that they were in Port Harcourt to support free, fair and credible elections.

Edwards disclosed that they had earlier engaged some stakeholders, including politicians, security chiefs and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the need for peaceful polls in Rivers State today.

  • Imo APC Chairman accuses INEC of disobeying court order

Few hours before the March 9, 2019 Governorship/House of Assembly Elections, the Chairman of the State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Daniel Nwafor, has accused the Imo State Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Gross disobedience of court order and treatment of the high court with levity and disdain.

In a letter dated March 7, 2019 and addressed to the Head of Department (HoD) Election & Party Monitoring, INEC, Owerri, Barrister V. O Nwokeabia, Nwafor alleged that despite the judgment and order of a Federal High Court, Abuja, in suit no:  FCT/HC/BW/CV/103/2018, the state INEC, against all known democratic principles, has been treating the court and its judgment with levity.

In the letter, which was made available to The Nation on Friday, Nwafor said the Federal High Court Abuja had granted his application seeking, among others, that the Imo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Francis Chukwuemeka Ezeonu and all the officers in that office recognize him (Nwafor) as the chairman of APC in Imo Sate.

He, however, said “Despite the rule of law slogan of your commission, your office has consistently insulted the court and its judgment and orders…..this is shocking coming from a lawyer that the reason for disobeying orders of court and treating the court with levity is that someone is directing you to do so. This is wrong and unacceptable.”

Nwafor reminded the state INEC that Nigeria is governed by laws and “All of us must obey the laws of the land including any decision made by the courts until set aside. He said since the state INEC HoD now claims to be bigger than the court and the laws of the land, “I am compelled to formally write a petition to the disciplinary committee of the body of lawyers to call you to order while I also continue with the contempt matter.”

Recall that the state chapter of the APC had filed a contempt suit against the National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. The contempt suit was filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, with Nwafor insisting that Oshiomhole’s action in dissolving his executive was contemptuous because there was an existing court judgment barring the APC National Chairman from doing so.

According to him, Oshiomhole had no power to dissolve a duly elected executive body headed by him (Nwafor) and appointing a Caretaker Committee led by Chief Marcellinus Nlemigbo. He described the caretaker committee chairman and his members as “impostors.”

  • DSS arrests Taraba’s federal lawmaker Danladi Baido

A House of Representatives member, Danladi Baido, was on Friday arrested by men of the Department of State Security Service (DSS).

Although no reason was stated for the arrest, The Nation learnt it will not be unconnected to the governorship/State Assembly polls holding today.

Baido, who is representing Ardo-Kola, Lau and Karim-Lamido federal constituency, was re-elected on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform at the presidential/national assembly polls on February 26.

Baido is a former political godfather to the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sani Abubakar Danladi.

The two kinsmen from Karin-Lamido, now in different political parties, are in serious political battle as to who will win the area tomorrow.

Baido was in his village mobilising his party’s agents and supporters ahead of the governorship/State Assembly polls when the DSS picked him.

The DSS, accompanied by policemen of the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB), came in about six hilux vans.

Baido’s supporters -largely youths, blocked the DSS officials with bows and arrows near the bank of River Benue after they crossed into Lau local government area.

But the lawmaker came down and pleaded with the youth to open the road and not to attack anyone.

“They (DSS) are not taking me away to go and kill me,” he said.
