‘APC has prevented Osun from being plunged into crisis’

A foremost contender for the governorship ticket of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Omooba Dotun Babayemi, has said the legal steps taken by the party on the lingering local government crisis, has prevented the state from being plunged into crisis.

Babayemi, who noted that the steps showed APC as a responsible and law-abiding party, said opting for law suits had prevented the destruction of property, bloodshed and loss of lives.

He hailed the leadership of the party in the state for taking to legal recourse aimed at resolving the logjam that surrounded the resumption of office by the party’s elected local government chairmen and councillors.

Babayemi commended APC local government chairmen and other elected officials of the councils for their perseverance and for allowing peace to reign by not taking the law into their hands.

The governorship hopeful, in a statement from his media office, said the intervention of the APC leaders, coupled with the calmness and understanding of the council chairmen and councillors, had prevented the state from being thrown into confusion.

“The legal intervention at every point in time by the APC leaders and stakeholders since the local government problems started this year in Osun State has shown the world that APC is a party of peace, it is law-abiding. Were it not so, our dear state would have by now been thrown into a state of lawlessness,” he said.

The governorship aspirant noted that the autonomy granted the local governments, which formed the basis of the current face-off, was not the creation of anybody in the state, but rather that of the country through the Supreme Court, the apex court of the land.

He said if the principle of the three tiers of government were followed to the letter in the country, grassroots would be developed.

“As enshrined in our constitution, Nigeria runs a federal system, which recognises the centre, state and local governments.’’

Babayemi praised the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola and Tajudeen Lawal-led party executive in the state for their efforts at seeing to the amicable resolution of the lingering crisis through legal means.

He said the laudable steps so far taken by them and the mature way the council chairmen and councillors had been conducting themselves, had saved the state from being plunged into a large scale crisis.

He appealed to local government workers in the state under the aegis of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) on strike, to call off the industrial action and resume work.

Doing so, the aspirant said, would be for the benefit of the state and its people, especially those at the grassroots.

He added: “Our people at the local level are the ones mostly bearing the brunt of what is going and we must consider them.”

APC youth parliament frees 59 inmates in honour of VP Shettima

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth Parliament, North-East, marked the 59th birthday of Vice President Kashim Shettima with a humanitarian outreach that freed 59 inmates from the Bauchi Correctional Facility and gave financial help to 59 orphans.

Speaking at the event in Bauchi, the Chairman of the Parliament, Kabiru Garba Kobi, said the act was to reflect Shettima’s 59 years of life and service to the people.

“We paid millions of naira to clear fines and compensations for 59 inmates so they could be released. We also supported 59 orphans with cash and donated medicines for other prisoners. This is how we celebrate a leader who always cares for the people,” Kobi said.

He described Shettima as a visionary and patriotic leader whose humility and strength continue to inspire Nigerian youths.

Kobi compared Shettima’s contribution to the North-East to that of the late Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, adding that youths across the country are proud of his record.

Other speakers at the event, such as Imam Umar Yahuza and educationist Dr Zuwaira Musa, spoke on the need to support orphans and deal with the problem of out-of-school children in Bauchi State.

Political activist, Comrade Sabo Muhammad, called on the Youth Parliament to repeat the programme in other zones of Bauchi. He also warned against any attempt to weaken Shettima’s position ahead of the 2027 elections.

He urged residents to take part in the ongoing national voter registration, stressing that it is the surest way to install the leaders of their choice.

The programme ended with prayers for long life, good health, and more service to the nation for the vice president.

One of the freed inmates, Bashir Ahmad, who had been fined N30,000, thanked the APC Youth Parliament and the Vice President on behalf of the beneficiaries.

  • North frantic about 2027

    North frantic about 2027

Not the entire North, of course. Just some powerful elements and groups in the far North. No one can fully explain why these groups are frantic about 2027; but either singly or collectively, or sometimes through the eyes of the Peoples Democratic Party that often postures as a northern political organisation, they have advanced various theses about regional marginalisation to justify their impending rebellion against the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu. The plotting has manifested across all strata and political parties, with some observers even fearing that the kind of internal (party) revolt and betrayal that undid former president Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 might be replicated in 2027.

One of the theses the powerful groups have advanced is the bogey about appointments and projects marginalisation. It is of course a ruse, considering that the lion’s share of projects and key administration appointments have been colonised by the Northwest, and with the entire old North having the quantitative upper hand. The country, not to say the regions, is not tired of accusations and counteraccusations of one region dominating the others, or of incipient Fulanisation, Yorubanisation, and Igbonisation of government and society. As long as the country remains structurally ossified and immersed in the unitarism or centralisation of the polity and government, there will be no end to centrifugal agitations. Some interest groups and political parties in the far North have seized upon these agitations to press, sometimes in inflammatory words, their campaign for change, a campaign that completely ignores or downplays the immense economic change and advancement the APC administration has inspired in two years of heavy lifting.

Unmindful of repeating the tragic mistake of 1993 when some elements in the military and polity thought it abhorrent to endure four or eight years of the Moshood Abiola presidency, disaffected and mainly northern groups have intensified the campaign to ditch the APC government by facilitating the return of Dr Jonathan, or even doing the unthinkable by baiting former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, or at worst organising to split southern votes in favour of a northern candidate, possibly former vice president Atiku Abubakar. They have also advanced the thesis that the APC administration has been lax in tackling insecurity, despite the North being both directly and indirectly responsible for the mayhem. The grounds for the campaigns are weakened with each passing day and administrative milestone, but northern politicians like former Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai, gripped by buyer’s remorse, have stuck to their campaigns and their guns. It does not seem as if the far North can in fact bear the thought of not sitting in the saddle of power for any stretch of time, let alone eight years. The federal saddle is their stimulant, but a dangerous and anachronistic addiction with fearful consequences for stability.

  • Party upholds member’s suspension

    Party upholds member’s suspension

All Progressives Congress in Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Lagos, has upheld suspension of Abdulbaq Balogun, a prominent chieftain and Chief Executive of Lagos Ferry Services (LagFerry).

Balogun, one of the party’s grassroots mobilisers in Alayabiagba Ward A, was accused of defiance of party structures.

The decision to ratify his suspension, first pronounced by his ward on August 15, was sealed at the LGA executive meeting on August 20.

Party Chair, Samuel Adeyemi, said the politician had “failed to appeal or show remorse for actions deemed injurious to APC family.”

At the heart of the grievances is what party leaders describe as Balogun’s absence from ward and council activities.

“For six years, his name could not be found in the party’s attendance book,” one executive claimed.

Balogun was accused of nurturing a parallel political structure under Alalubarika Nation, which he denied.

Local executives claim this faction has operated in open competition with APC organs in Ajeromi-Ifelodun.

Analysts warn the rift could weaken APC’s cohesion in Ajeromi-Ifelodun.

While the council executive has moved to close ranks, some insiders fear alienating Balogun could embolden rival factions or opposition parties ahead of future contests.

Observers expect Balogun to stage a comeback through reconciliation, legal redress, or outright defection.

  • 2027: Let Kalu retain Senate seat, APC chief tells Oko Chukwu

2027: Let Kalu retain Senate seat, APC chief tells Oko Chukwu

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Edward Kalu Okocha, has congratulated the immediate past deputy governor of the state, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, on his recent defection to the ruling Labour Party (LP).

But Okocha urged Oko Chukwu not to contest the Abia North Senatorial seat against incumbent Senator Orji Uzor Kalu in 2027.

In a statement yesterday in Ameke Abiriba, Okocha described Oko Chukwu’s defection as a bold and strategic step.

The APC chieftain noted that the former deputy governor’s decision to join Governor Alex Otti’s administration underscored his commitment to the progress of Abia State and Abia North Senatorial Zone in particular.

He urged the former deputy governor not to allow the excitement of his new political chapter to push him into contesting the Senate seat.

Okocha stressed that Senator Kalu has positioned Abia North favourably through quality representation and seniority in the National Assembly.

“Distinguished Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has been doing an outstanding job in the Senate, bringing meaningful projects and empowerment to our zone. His legislative experience and seniority make him a strong contender for principal positions, including the Senate Presidency, which would be a game-changer for our people,” he said.

The APC chieftain recalled how he supported Oko Chukwu’s third-term bid in the Abia State House of Assembly in 2010, despite the opposition from some quarters. According to him, that strategic decision later paid off as Oko Chukwu facilitated key projects, such as a skills acquisition centre in Abiriba, and eventually became the deputy governor.

“This same strategic thinking is needed today. As we look towards 2027, Abia North stands to benefit more by rallying around Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for re-election, thereby positioning him for greater responsibilities in the Senate. That is the path to unlocking more development and opportunities for our people,” Okocha added.

Church greets APC chieftain at 50

New Heritage Baptist Church (NHBC), Eniosa, Ibadan, Oyo State, has celebrated Otunba Rotimi Ajanaku, chair and chief executive of Ajanaku Holdings, as he turns 50.

It said the All Progressives Congress chief is a beacon of hope for the underprivileged and an example of humility in leadership.

In a statement by its Undershepherd, Rev. Philemon Ajide, and Secretary, Segun Adeniran, the church praised Ajanaku’s consistency in the service of God and humanity.

“We rejoice with you on your golden jubilee and thank God for granting you the grace to reach this landmark,” it said.

“You are a rare creation who has devoted much of your life to lifting people, serving humanity without discrimination.”

The church noted his humility, noting that despite his achievements, he is approachable and respectful. “Your humility is exemplary. Even in empowering people, you do it with grace and respect. Though the tides of politics have not always tilted in your favour, you never allow disappointments to dampen your spirit or derail your mission of touching lives,” the statement said.

NHBC described the celebrant as a different breed of politician—one who shuns desperation, blackmail and the toxic “do-or-die” politics often associated with the country’s political class.

It said Ajanaku had carved a reputation for peaceful politics and people-centred philanthropy.

Examples of his benevolence abound, the church noted, recalling how he had frequently distributed food items, including rice and other essentials, not just within his political constituency, but also extending his generosity to neighbouring local governments such as Akinyele and Lagelu.

The Baptist congregation revisited their earlier recognition of Ajanaku’s service, reminding the public that he was among the select recipients of the maiden Father Abraham Distinguished Award in 2019, given in commemoration of the United Nations’ International Father’s Day.

Earlier this year, he was conferred with the rare honour of Fellow of the Father Abraham Distinguished Award, cementing his status as one of the nation’s most outstanding benefactors.

“The Church of God has no regrets associating with you,” the statement affirmed. “You have never withdrawn your hand of fellowship from the work of God or from supporting humanity. Your life continues to inspire, and your new age is loaded with divine prosperity, favour and protection. We pray you and your family will continue to enjoy unending grace, mercy and blessings in Jesus’ name.”

APC dismisses Jigawa gov’s N1.8bn luxury car procurement rumour

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed a viral an online media report alleging that governor Malam Umar Namadi of Jigawa State procured N1.8 billion luxury car for himself, says Governor Namadi never bought any luxury car, but has been committed to state development in his two years as governor of the state.

This was contained in a press statement issued, signed and made available to Our Reporter by the All Progressives Congress (APC) publicity secretary in the state, Mr Bashir Kundo in Dutse, the state capital.

Titled: ‘Governor Namadi not buying luxury cars, committed to state development,’ the Publicity Secretary stated that the media report is not true but contrived deliberately to distract and tarnish the image of the governor and the government for political reasons.

According the statement: “The publication was meant to distract from the ongoing historic developmental projects being undertaken by the People’s Governor of Jigawa State, Malam Umar Namadi.”

Kundo added that “We believe that the purveyors of fake news and their merchant deliberately concocted and spread false information claiming that Governor Umar Namadi had awarded a contract for the purchase of 12 SUVs and taken delivery of other luxury vehicles parked at the Government House for his official convoy”.

The statement further stated that “The publication falsely claimed that Jigawa generated only N6.9 billion in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in the first half of 2025. These are false claims and outright ignorance on the part of the informants, with a sinister motive and unprofessionalism for the so-called online platform peddling the falsehood”.

“We like to put the record correct and clear that the state generated over N23.8 billion in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in the previous six months from January to June this year, not N6.9 billion as claimed by the false report”.

“The report deliberately misinformed its readers by reporting in assumption that visitors’ vehicles parked in the premises of the Government House are newly acquired convoy vehicles for the governor. While it is legal for the Governor to acquire convoy vehicles, Governor Namadi is still using old vehicles used by his predecessor”.

Kundo further stated that in the last two years, Governor Umar Namadi has prioritised Jigawa development, building educational prospects of the citizen and connecting hundreds of rural communities with road networks, having completed all 26 road projects it inherited from the previous administration.

“Governor Namadi’s government initiated 48 road projects covering 976 kilometres, in which 30 of the projects have reached advanced stages of completion. These include Jigawa -Sundimina – Birnin Kudu Road, awarded at the cost of N 11.5 billion with a 12-month completion period, but completed in seven months”.

Presently, Kundo said there are ongoing 47Km Sara – Gantsa Road at a cost of  N11 billion and 15 different feeder roads at varying 70 – 80 per cent completion stages; in addition to township roads at Bulangu and Gandun Sarki as well as Dutse capital road networks at 60 – 70 per cent completion.

“Governor Umar Namadi administration inherited N82 billion liabilities in which the previous administration paid only N32 billion. The present government paid N50 billion. With these development initiatives, the governor is not prioritising luxury cars, but rather committed to state development”.

  • Which senatorial district will produce Kwara’s next governor?

Which senatorial district will produce Kwara’s next governor?

Although the 2027 general elections are still over two years away, the political temperature in Kwara State is already rising. At the heart of the brewing political debate is the question of which senatorial district should produce the next governor of the state, a subject stirring passionate conversations among stakeholders, especially within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

As it stands, Kwara North Senatorial District appears to be the most assertive in its demand for a power shift, backed by what many describe as compelling historical and moral arguments rooted in equity, justice, and fairness.

Since the return to democratic governance in 1999, the distribution of the governorship seat among the three senatorial districts in Kwara has been lopsided: Kwara Central would have occupied the governorship for 20 years by the time Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq completes his second term in 2027.

Kwara South has been governed for eight years. Kwara North, in stark contrast, has only governed for one year and eight months during the short-lived tenure of Governor Sha’aba Lafiagi; 1992 to 1993, during the aborted Third Republic.

For stakeholders from Kwara North, this imbalance has become both a rallying cry and a political case for redress in 2027.

In a bold political manoeuvre, influential leaders from Kwara North, under the banner of equity, have begun consulting widely. A notable development was a recent meeting between Kwara North elders, led by former senator Ahmed Mohammed, and the Kwara South APC Elders Forum.

During the meeting, Senator Mohammed appealed for support from the South in advancing Kwara North’s ambition.

“We are here to solicit the support of Kwara South for the Kwara North agenda. We feel it is time that our district produces the next governor in the spirit of equity, fairness, and justice,” he said. “The three senatorial districts are equal partners in the Kwara project. What is good for the goose must also be good for the gander.”

His remarks were echoed by Ambassador Nurudeen Mohammed, a respected diplomat and fellow northerner, who emphasised the same call for justice and regional balance.

Responding on behalf of the Kwara South APC Elders Forum, Chief James Ayeni expressed sympathy with the aspirations of the northern bloc. He, however, urged them to present a united front:

“Your cause is just, and you have our moral support. But we advise you to put your house in order. Unity among your aspirants and political actors will go a long way in making your case stronger.”

That message, urging internal cohesion, has resonated across Kwara North, prompting stakeholders in the region to intensify reconciliation and alliance-building efforts.

In what many see as a sign of readiness, four key aspirants from Kwara North have publicly indicated their interest in contesting for the governorship on the platform of the APC:

    Senator Sadiq Umar

Umar is currently representing Kwara North at the National Assembly. He is vocal in the legislature and is known for his constituency outreach. He hails from the Kaiama Local Government Area.

    Yakubu Danladi-Salihu

Danladi-Salihu is the current Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly and one of the youngest political leaders in the state. From Baruten Local Government Area, he enjoys close ties with Governor AbdulRazaq but is seen by some as politically inexperienced for the top job.

    Tajudeen Audu

Alhaji Audu is the Makama of Lafiagi. He is a chartered accountant and a former governorship aspirant on the APC platform in 2019. He was also one of the early backers of the Otoge movement.

Haliru Dantosho Mahmud Alhaji Mahmud is a recent defector from the PDP. He was once a youth leader in the opposition party and is now fully integrated into the APC.

At a stakeholders’ meeting in Ilorin, the four aspirants expressed unity and pledged to support whichever of them secures the party’s ticket. The meeting was attended by the APC Deputy Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Samari, who hails from Kwara North.

Samari emphasised that the zone is united and well-prepared: He said, “We are one big family and we are ready to produce the next governor. Our people have the experience, the character, and the commitment to serve.”

During his first term in office, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, a native of Ilorin in Kwara Central, reportedly indicated his support for a power shift to Kwara North in 2027. While not a formal declaration, the statement has become a political reference point for many in the northern bloc.

This perceived endorsement continues to fuel expectations that the APC will zone the governorship to the North. Failure to do so, observers say, could fracture the party’s internal cohesion and spark defections.

Despite the growing momentum in Kwara North, the APC in Kwara State is not without internal divisions. The party is reportedly factionalised across all 193 wards, with several power blocs vying for influence.

A potential threat to the zoning arrangement is the emergence of strong contenders from other zones:

    Saliu Mustapha

Senator Mustapha (Kwara Central) is the Turaki of Ilorin and Senate Committee Chair on Agriculture and Rural Development. He is one of the most popular politicians in the state, with significant grassroots followership and philanthropic credentials.

    Abubakar Suleiman

Prof Suleiman is a former minister under President Jonathan and now the Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS). A recent defector from the PDP to the APC, his entry complicates the power calculations.

Read Also: Nigeria Customs deepens ties with China on digital reforms, training, modernisation

While both are formidable aspirants, political observers warn that their ambitions could reignite intra-party conflicts, especially if zoning is disregarded.

Meanwhile, the opposition PDP is quietly reorganising under the leadership of Senator Bukola Saraki, former Senate President and ex-governor of the state.

Despite the party’s losses in 2019 and 2023, Saraki remains the rallying point for opposition politics in Kwara. He recently revalidated his PDP membership at his Agbaji ward in Ilorin and has since intensified grassroots mobilisation.

Speaking during the event, he expressed optimism: “The PDP is the only viable opposition in Kwara. People are frustrated with the current state of affairs. We’re seeing increased interest and enthusiasm from old and new members alike. We’re confident that PDP will bounce back in 2027.”

There are also speculations that Saraki is wooing influential APC members, including the Mustapha brothers, in a bid to strengthen the PDP’s chances.

As it stands, Kwara North remains the most likely zone to produce the next governor, especially if the APC honours its informal zoning understanding and the district maintains its internal cohesion.

The broad consensus on the need for power rotation is strong, and public sentiment favours a shift.
