    Nigeria First policy gets accolades

Chieftain of All Progressives Congress in Oyo State and former governorship aspirant, Oyedele Alao, has lauded President Bola Tinubu for launching ‘Nigeria First’ policy, which prioritises use of locally-made goods.

He said the policy, which mirrored United States President Donald Trump’s ‘America First’ doctrine, is long overdue, noting that past administrations failed to implement similar measures despite calls from stakeholders, following the 2016 oil price crash.

In a statement, Alao said, under the policy, ministries, departments and agencies should prefer Nigerian goods and expertise.

He said: “The policy bans procurement of foreign goods or services available locally, unless a waiver is granted by Bureau of Public Procurement. This initiative can be seen as a true and definite demonstration of the government’s commitment to promoting local industries, boosting growth and creating jobs.”

Alao said the initiative will stimulate economic growth, create jobs and support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), adding by giving preference to locally-produced goods, the country could stimulate demand, increase capacity utilisation and attract investments in the manufacturing sector.

He, however, advised the government to establish a presidential committee to oversee the policy’s implementation, calling for allocation of special funds to assist SMEs and manufacturers in scaling their operations.

Alao hailed the reforms of President Tinubu in the oil and gas sector, particularly the appointment of Bayo Ojulari as the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL).

He said: “I have no doubt that Ojulari and others appointed are  competent for the jobs, as they are active players in the oil industry with the requisite experience. They know what is at stake and the targets set for them by President Tinubu, and will do everything to meet the targets and take NNPCL to greater heights.”

Lagos council polls: We will organise credible primaries, says Ogala

…Lagos APC leaders push for consensus candidacy

…Hamzat, Olusi, Ojelabi: It would enhance unity

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State is pushing for consensus option for the selection of chairmanship and councillorship candidates for the July local government polls.

Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat,Governance Advisory Council (GAC) leader Prince Tajudeen Olusi and party chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi said consensus would prevent acrimony and foster unity and harmony in the fold.

However, the Chairman of the Lagos State APC Local Government Election Committee, Babatunde Ogala (SAN) said the panel would conduct free, fair and credible shadow polls in local governments and wards where aspirants decline the option of consensus method.

He said the chairmanship primary would hold at the state party secretariat on Acme Road, Ogba, Ikeja, adding that each aspirant would be allowed inside the venue along with each agent.

Ogala said the councillorship primaries which would be supervised by experienced and trustworthy stalwarts, would take place at the wards.

He said while the members of local government executive committees of the party will form the electoral college for the election of chairmanship candidates, ward executive committees will form the electoral college for the choice of councillorship flagbearers.

Ogala emphasised that the electoral committee will leave no stone unturned to conduct a democratic and transparent exercise.

Party faithful thronged the party secretariat for the stakeholders’ meeting, the first since Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu became president.

Anxiety was bold on the faces of many aspirants, concious of the fact that in a ward where 12 aspirants are vying for councillor, only one person will get the ticket.

At the meeting were Senator Idiat Adebule (Lagos West), Chief Akanni Seriki-Bamu, Chief Rabiu Oluwa, Alhaji Tunde Balogun, Asipa Kaoli Olusanya, Otunba Femi Pedro, Alhaji Mutiu Are, Joko Pelumi, House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, L.D. Dosunmu, Alabi Macfoy, Kolade Alabi, Jumoke Okoya-Thomas, Dr. Samuel Adedayo, Adekunle Olayinka,  National Youth Leader Dayo Israel and Hon. Owokoniran.

Also at the meeting were Bisi Yusuf, Funso Ologunde, Abiodun Mafe, Moshood Mayegun, Seye Oladejo, Ayodele Adewale, Demola Sodiq,Muritala Seriki, and Bolaji Sanusi.

Ojelabi, who welcomed the chieftains, thanked the aspirants and party leaders for their cooperation from the nominations through screening to the appeal process.

He said, “The focus of our meeting is to appeal to all of us to know that this is the party that has been ruling Lagos and to live in peace and harmony, and realise that when we decide to work as one family, we will have a seamless primary in the state chapter.

“Let us put the interest of our party above personal interest. People from opposition parties are coming to our party, which has moved from its control of five states to being the ruling party in the country.”

Urging members to cooperate with the party leadership, he said the exercise would be successful, the President would be happy and the chapter would redeem our image in the light of what happened in the 2023 elections.

Olusi, who spoke in Yoruba, said the Southwest should be happy for producing Asiwaju Tinubu as president. He prayed that his presidency would be for the good of Nigerians.

He also expressed satisfaction with the performance of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, saying that he is on course.

Olusi described the local government as the most important level of governance, being the closest to the people, noting in that in many advanced countries, many presidents and prime ministers had previously served as councillors.

For the party to succeed, the elderstatesman said party members should cooperate with the party leadership.

Noting the alegayionof imposition in the social media, he said many of the portrayals are baseless.

Olusi reasoned that in a ward where 12 people are vying for councillor, those involved need to talk, dialogue and negotiate.

He said that that type of compromise is not new, adding, “I wanted to be a senator at a time. They asked me to go to the House of Representatives.  Thirteen people came to appeal to me. Oluwa had to step down for me. He is here today.”

Ogala, former APC National Legal Adviser, said:”Our presidency, our party are at stake,” stressing that other states look forward to the outcone of the primary so that they can learn from it.

Giving an account of how the committee had gone so far, he said, “We have been very thorough and carried out our assignment with integrity. The screening was done by a team of party elders. We insisted that the results should be on the social media.

“If you are not qualified, it is because you are not qualified. If you are not successful, it is because yoy are not successful. We are not under any influence.”

Ogala assured that the list of successful aspirants for the primaries will be out today.

He said the positions being competed for are few relative to the huge population of aspirants.

But he assured that after the polls, no aspirant would go home empty handed.

Ogala supported the push for consensus, saying that “if we had conceded to our leadership in the past, we should sustain the tradition.”

He recalled that he was asked to step down when he sought re-election as a state lawmaker, adding that when he waa the National Legal Adviser, the National Executive Committee was dissolved before its tenure expired.

Ogala said despite these temporary setbacks, he never wavered in his loyalty and support for the party.

Shedding light on the preparation for the primaries, he said the party has adopted the indirect option because it is favoured by the constitution along with consensus and direct method.

He disclosed that electoral colleges had been constitued at the wards and local governments.

Ogala said there would be accreditation and security would be tight.

He advised aspirants to shun unruly behaviour, warning that aspirants who invade the venues of the prinaries with supporters would be disqualified.

Ogala said:”We will be fair, just and we will do it with honour and integrity.”

Noting that over 80 per cent of aspirants are qualified, he said they should bear in mind that only 57 can be candidates.

Ogala urged top party leaders to go home, discuss and arrange consensus si that there would be less heat.

Urging aspirants to elevate collective interest over personal wush, he said “there is a party; that is why we have aspirants.”

Ogala, therefore, urged the aspirants and members to agree among themselves.

He added:”Daily briefings will be made public so that all party members can know what is going on.”

Alabi, chairman of Bariga Council and former Association of Local Governments (ALGON), called for a consistent display of love, patience and reasoning by party members.

Urging compromise and consensus,  he said:”I once contested and I was asked to step down. I accepted.

It is about public service. I suggest that there should be deployment of enough security personnel yo ensure a hitch-free exercise.

Hamzat said:.”There is a lesson for us to learn today from what just happened here.”

The deputy governor mocked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying that the umbrella has torn.

On the push for consensus, Hamzat said:”We should not let our leaders down. Let’s do consensus. “

    By Fahd Bagbansoro

  • Tussle for power, control of state resource responsible for Benue judicial crisis- Onjeh

Tussle for power, control of state resource responsible for Benue judicial crisis- Onjeh

Prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Benue State, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has condemned the  March 4, 2025 directive by the Chief Judge of Benue State, Hon. Justice Maurice Ahemba Ikpambese, which relocated all Local Government Election Petition Tribunals and the Appeal Tribunal from Benue to the NBA House, Abuja.

Onjeh described the move as “an aberration that raises serious legal and ethical questions.”

Onjeh, who was the APC 2023 Senatorial Candidate for Benue South, stated that the directive, which was purportedly based on security concerns and an ongoing judiciary staff strike, is yet another indication that the judicial crisis in Benue State is a direct consequence of the larger political power struggle that has engulfed the state since the inception of Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration.

“The legal maneuvering we are witnessing in Benue State is not about justice but about political power and the control of state resources,” Onjeh declared.

“The same forces that sought to subvert Governor Alia’s administration from the onset have now turned to the judiciary as their latest weapon to achieve what they failed to accomplish politically,” he argued.

Onjeh, who is also former Chairman, Governing Board of the Projects Development Institute (PRODA), Enugu, noted that Governor Alia has faced an unprecedented level of opposition from within his own party with a faction of disgruntled APC leaders attempting to impose their will on the state.

He claimed their efforts to install their preferred Speaker for Benue were thwarted and subsequent attempts to manipulate the National Assembly into blocking federal allocations to Benue’s local governments also failed.

He argued they have resorted to using the state judiciary to regain lost political control.

Read Also: Young Nigerians in politics (4)

He argued that the Chief Judge lacks the powers to unilaterally shift the venue of the Tribunal, adding that the Benue State Election Laws 2007 (as amended), stipulates that the venue for the Tribunals can only be changed if all the parties to the petition consent to it. But in this case, the Chief Judge has neither sought nor secured the consent of the respondents to relocate the venue.

The former President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) further argued that the Chief Judge’s actions directly contradict previous rulings he issued in similar circumstances.

“Only a few months ago, in December 2024, His Lordship Justice Ikpambese rejected an application to relocate the Benue North East Election Petition Tribunal from Adikpo to Makurdi, on the ground that the applicant did not secure the consent of all the parties involved, despite security concerns raised by the respondents,” Onjeh recalled.

“The learned Chief Judge further dismissed the claims of insecurity in Adikpo, noting that the courts in Adikpo were still sitting at the time.

“Yet today, he unilaterally shifts the Local Government Election Petition Tribunals to Abuja without consulting the parties involved or even the courtesy of notifying the Chief Security Officer of the state, Governor Alia.

“Thus, with due respect, I humbly wish to ask His Lordship, Justice Ikpambese, how many state governments are in Benue State, and which one is he loyal to? This reeks of inconsistency and bias. With due respect to His Lordship, he is fully aware that he needed the consent of the respondents before relocating the venue, but deliberately refused to do so.”

Onjeh maintained that the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal are sitting in Benue State, which further invalidates the claim that the state is unsafe for the tribunals.

He suggested that if security was truly an issue, the tribunals could have been relocated to one of the many military formations within Makurdi instead of being moved out of the state entirely, a decision that, in his view, undermines the principles of federalism.

“Never, in the chequered history of Nigeria’s democracy since independence in 1960, has a Local Government Election Petition Tribunal been shifted outside its state of jurisdiction. Justice Ikpambese is trying to set a terrible precedent, and he must be stopped immediately,” stated Onjeh, adding, “Relocating the Benue Local Government Election Petition Tribunal to Abuja is akin to relocating the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal to Ghana, or London. Isn’t that utterly absurd?”

Asking if there’s an ongoing war in Benue State to justify the relocation of the Tribunals, Onjeh noted that not even in a war-torn zone like Maiduguri in the North East, has a Local Government Election Petition Tribunal been relocated to Abuja.

“And amidst the heightened insecurity in the South East due to the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and other pro-Biafra groups; and the incessant attacks of bandits in Zamfara State in the North West, Local Government Election Tribunals from these regions have never been relocated to Abuja,”  Onjeh stated.

He questioned Justice Ikpambese’s choice of Abuja as the new venue for the Tribunals, when it is common knowledge in the Benue State that the forces united against the leadership of Alia are hugely concentrated in Abuja, adding that it is another impartial angle to Justice Ikpambese’s move, and a good reason for the respondents to be even more apprehensive.

Onjeh further pointed out that this latest judicial maneuver follows Justice Ikpambese’s controversial decision to grant a waiver on security deposits for petitioners challenging the outcome of the local government elections.

He argued that this amounted to a unilateral amendment of the electoral laws enacted by the Benue State House of Assembly, which clearly stipulate that petitioners must pay a mandatory security deposit before their petitions can be entertained.

“Judges do not make laws; they interpret and apply them,” Onjeh asserted. “By waiving the security deposit requirement without any legislative backing, Justice Ikpambese overstepped his constitutional authority and encroached on the powers of the legislature. Such judicial overreach threatens the principle of separation of powers.”

Onjeh also dismissed the Chief Judge’s justification that he granted the waiver in response to public outcry.

“There is no documented evidence of any petitioners complaining about the security deposit requirement,” he argued. “This raises concerns about whether the Chief Judge privately met with certain petitioners before issuing the waiver. If true, this would constitute a serious breach of judicial ethics and impartiality,” he insisted.

He noted that within 48 hours of the waiver being granted, a staggering 295 APC members, primarily from the faction opposed to Governor Alia, rushed to file petitions challenging the outcome of the 2024 local government elections.

According to him: “This was clearly a premeditated plan,” Onjeh declared. “The moment the financial barrier to filing petitions was removed, the floodgates were opened for politically motivated litigation.”

Onjeh raised further concerns about the composition of the Appeal Panel, pointing out respondents had previously submitted a petition challenging the appointment of the chairman of the Appeal Panel. Given that the Appeal Tribunal is the final arbiter in these cases, he warned that any indication of bias could have far-reaching consequences.

Previous rulings by judges appointed by Justice Ikpambese, Onjeh noted, have already demonstrated a pattern of decisions that align with the interests of the faction opposed to Governor Alia.

He added that Justice Ikpambese’s appointment of a chairman for the Appeal Panel, who had earlier ruled in favour of the suspended former APC Chairman, Mr. Augustine Agada, in a related matter with the one before the tribunal, only adds to suspicions that the judicial process is being manipulated to serve political interests.

In his view: “The judiciary in Benue State appears to have taken sides in this political struggle,” Onjeh remarked. “Whether acting independently or under external influence, it seems the judiciary is being weaponized to achieve a predetermined outcome—one that could see local government control handed over to a faction that has already been rejected by the people.”

The APC stalwart argued that the ultimate prize in this judicial contest is control of Benue’s local government system, particularly in light of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling granting financial autonomy to local governments.

He maintained that those seeking to hijack the system are primarily motivated by the prospect of accessing and controlling local government funds.

“Their desperation is fuelled by the financial autonomy of local governments,” Onjeh stated. “The endgame of this judicial intrigue seems clear: the takeover of Benue’s local government system. With the recent Supreme Court ruling granting financial autonomy to local governments, control of the councils has become a lucrative objective.”

Onjeh noted that Governor Alia’s administration has already demonstrated a commitment to financial discipline, with workers receiving their salaries regularly, pensions and gratuities being paid, and infrastructural projects progressing across the state. He questioned why individuals who previously mismanaged the state’s resources were now so desperate to regain control of the local governments.

“These are the same people who had every opportunity to transform Benue State when they were in power, yet they failed,” Onjeh said. “Now that we have a governor who is genuinely committed to serving the people, they are doing everything possible to sabotage him.”

The former President of the West Africa Students’ Union (WASU) called on the NJC to urgently intervene to prevent the Benue State judiciary from being used as a political tool. He argued that the judiciary’s inconsistent rulings and apparent partiality are eroding public confidence in the legal system.

He warned that if the judiciary proceeds with its apparent plan to overturn the local government election results, it would effectively hand control of the councils to a faction that has been rejected by the people.

Onjeh still maintained the recommendation of the Benue House of Assembly removing Justice Ikpambese was constitutionally valid and in line with due process as enshrined in the clear provision of Section 292 of Nigeria Constitution of 1999 (as amended).

“I feel that the Governor’s reaction to the recommendation of the House of Assembly, by forwarding same to NJC is superfluous; perhaps for abundance of caution,” Onjeh stated.  He went further to state, “Where the law had prescribed two different ways that an act can be done in Section 292, 1 (a) & (b), applying one of it suffices and within constitutional framework.”

Osun 2026: Consensus guber candidate likely by leaders in APC —Basiru

The National Secretary of All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has said that the party guber candidate for Osun State in 2026 election may emerge through a consensus arrangement by the leaders of the party.

He said the party may not rule the arrangement out considering the antecedents in Ondo and Edo States where several aspirants vied for the party ticket but was resolved through a consensus arrangement.

Speaking at the launch of grassroots mobilisers for APC across the state under the auspices of Alubarika Movement, held on Sunday noted that APC is united and strong in Osun State which will sack Governor Ademola Adeleke from government in 2026.

He expressed confidence that primary election of APC will not result to crisis within the party ahead 2026 election.

He said: “The primary election will be free and fair but I can assure you that the candidate may emerge from consensus arrangements by leadership of the party.

“APC can not be divided. Our party is a party of leadership and as I said, everybody that is a member of the party has legitimate desire to ensure that we have a candidate that will be able to deliver and defeat the PDP.

“In Ondo state for instance, there were 16 aspirants and we were able to get the right candidate that was able to deliver for the party. The same thing in Edo, we have more than 16 there and we resolved the matter. Everybody has the right to aspire to be leadership in the party.”

He scored the administration of Ademol Adeleke very low noting that, “PDP in Osun has failed in the area of education, health, empowerment. Will it not suprise you that the budget of the governor’s house is far more than the budget of agriculture, education and health combined.”

“It is a government that has no direction. Even the so called flyover they are doing, it’s being done without any project management sense and it shows lack of coordination, lack of leadership and lack of focus of the government.”

Commenting about rifts within Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), he said “Ambition of a few individuals is what is causing the rift within the opposition party and it is to the joy of us as a ruling party if they don’t get their house together. It is not our job to help them put their house in order.”

Earlier, the State Chairman of Alubarika Movement, Alhaji Kehinde Olagoke, said APC mobilisers will move to units, wards and local government areas to win as many people to the progressive fold.

Low turn out as APC leads in Ondo council polls

The All Progressives Congress is taking the lead in Saturday’s local government election held across the 18 local government areas of Ondo State.

The election was marred by low voters turnout. There was heavy security at strategic junctions around the Akure metropolis.

A total of 13 political parties participated in the election.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) withdrew from contesting in the election 72 hours before the conduct of the exercise.

The party said it does not trust the Ondo Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) to conduct credible elections.

Results of the election as of press time indicated the APC won in Ilaje, Akure South, and Irele local government areas. Electoral officers arrived at polling units at about 8 am but voters’ turnout was low. At various polling units, electoral officers were seen waiting for voters.

An electoral officer at Sacred Heart Primary School, Akure, said less than 20 voters have voted at about 11:30 am.

The situation was the same in Ward 4, Unit 27, Unit 7, Ward 2, Unit nine, and Unit 10.

Chief Press Secretary to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Ebenezer Adeniyan, who voted at polling Unit seven, Ward 4, Akure South local government, described the process as smooth and peaceful.

He said: “The process was smooth. It has been peaceful. The turnout could be better. This is a good outing for Ondo State. It is the process leading to the enthronement of local government autonomy. We have not recorded any incidents across the state. The report of the election has been encouraging.”

Meanwhile, elections did not hold for the Chairmanship position in Ondo West local government because the New Nigeria Peoples Party complained that its old logo was used in the ballot.

Chairman of Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) Dr. Joseph Aremo, who announced the rescheduled election in Ondo West, said only the election into the championship position was cancelled.

Aremo said an election was held for the councillorship positions.

He said the rescheduled election would be held between 11 am and 4 pm on Sunday

Meanwhile, Governor Aiyedatiwa has criticised the PDP’s withdrawal from Saturday’s local council elections in the state.

The PDP which fielded candidates for 15 local government areas cited the lack of ability of the Ondo State Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct credible elections as reason for its withdrawal.

Governor Aiyedatiwa, who described the PDP’s action as an act of “cowardness”, spoke after voting at his Polling Unit 5, Ward 4 in Ilaje LGA of the state.

He said: “I just cast my vote without any crisis. This is just what happened on the Nov. 16(2024) election, which was adjudged to be free and fair.

For the PDP to pull out, is cowardness. They participated in the whole process and the ODIEC released the timetable for the election, but I don’t know the reason for that.”
