He noted that his former boss has not declared that he is not contesting for the gubernatorial seat again, else, the agitation was unnecessary.

He said: “The manner the agitation is going, it may lead the party to disintegrations, rather than added value. I appeal to these various groups, to channel all their energy towards making the party vibrant and braced for the challenges ahead, rather than using this to distract and cause disunity in the party.”

“Our leader, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, remains the candidate of the party. He hasn’t spoken or rejected the ticket, so why all these shenanigans?

The election was marred by low voters turnout.

There was heavy security at strategic junctions around Akure metropolis.

Electoral officers arrived polling units around 8am but voters’ turnout was m low

At various polling units, electoral officers were seen waiting for voters.

An electoral officer at Sacred Heart Primary School, Akure, said less than 20 voters have voted at about 11:30am.

The situation was the same at
Ward 4, Unit 27 and Unit 7, Ward 2, Unit nine  and Unit 10.

Chief Press Secretary to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Ebenezer Adeniyan, who voted at polling Unit seven, Ward 4, Akure South local government, described the process as smooth and peaceful.

Adeniyan said reports from across the state indicated that the turnout was encouraging.

He said: “The process was smooth. It has been peaceful. The turnout could be better. This is a good outing for Ondo State. It is the process leading to enthronement of local government autonomy. We have not recorded any incident across the state. The report of the election has been encouraging.”

  • Stampedes: It is callous to politicise tragedies, APC blasts PDP

Stampedes: It is callous to politicise tragedies, APC blasts PDP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for allegedly politicizing recent tragedies in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Anambra, and Oyo states, which claimed about 70 lives.

Describing the opposition’s actions as “callous,” the APC said it was inappropriate to politicize such a somber period of national mourning.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, the APC’s national publicity secretary, Felix Morka, condemned the PDP for blaming the incidents on the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The state reads: “At a time of national grief over stampedes in Oyo, Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory that resulted in the death of citizens, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seized the moment to engage in callous political chicanery.

“Rather than genuinely commiserate with the victims and their families, the PDP chose to politicize the grief of the victims by blaming the stampedes on the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

The ruling party further said, “It is grossly indecent, insensitive and despicable for the PDP to exploit these tragic incidents in a senseless attack against the administration that has devoted itself to fixing the ruins of nearly two decades of PDP administration.

Recalling similar past incident, Morka noted, “Nigerians have not forgotten the tragic stampede at the ill-fated Nigerian Immigration Service recruitment exercise in 2014 at the Abuja stadium, under the watch of the PDP administration, that left many desperate job seekers dead and scores injured.

“The PDP’s allegations only remind us of its sordid record of maladministration and utter incompetence.”

Defending President Tinubu’s administration of being committed to the welfare of Nigerians, APC spokesman noted, “The PDP is either mischievous or totally out of touch with reality to suggest that President Bola Tinubu-led administration has not shown commitment to Nigerians’ welfare.

“For an administration that has invested hugely in alternative sources of energy and conversion of vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG); introduced the Credit Corps scheme and Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND); reviewed workers salaries and corps members’ allowances upward; sustained annual free and subsidized transportation fares for Nigerians during the yuletide; approved grants for farmers and small and medium entreprises (SMEs) and a slew of other humanitarian interventions, there is no doubt that this is the most people-centric administration in our history.

“Laughably, the PDP claimed that APC’s policies ruptured a ‘once thriving economy.”‘ For years, successive PDP administrations operated a phantom economy wired with complex distortions and suffocating  corruption while deluding Nigerians into thinking that the economy was healthy.

Changing course away from the lies and deception of the PDP, President Bola Tinubu embarked on the boldest and most courageous programme of reform to rebuild our country’s economy, and dismantling obstacles  to true prosperity and sustainability. The economy is rebounding steadily now as reforms continue to yield wholesome dividends.”

Commending President Tinubu for calling off his scheduled activities in response to, and in honour of the victims of, the incidents, the party commiserated with families that lost their loved ones and wish the injured speedy recovery.

  • Igbo presidency: Ngige, Sagay disagree on zoning

THE Igbo must negotiate with other zones to get their support for the presidency, Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, said on Wednesday.

He said the Igbo must work hard to make the dream a reality as power is not served à la carte.

Ngige said the All Progressives Congress (APC) constitution only talks about rotation, not zoning.

In an interview with our correspondent, he said: “APC has no arrangement for zoning in its constitution and none of the parties has. Our constitution talks about rotation and it says the rotation is between the North and South.

“We expect going forward, that all political parties should come to the South to pick their presidential candidates. We think Ndigbo should be favoured because we have not tasted it, but power is not served à la carte.”

But, eminent professor of law Itse Sagay (SAN) there is a convention among all political parties that power should rotate between the North and the South.

According to him, all presidential candidates should come from the South in 2023 according to the convention, which he said has become law.

Ngige said advised Ndigbo to join the ruling party if their dream of an Igbo president is to come true.

The minister said: “You cannot get the 2023 presidency through threats like some of our people are currently doing, but through negotiations with our friends in the West.

“Once again, I’m pleading with our people to join APC for us to have enough number before 2023.

“We can’t sit at a place and be crying of marginalisation. We are part and parcel of Nigeria, no one owns the country, and it belongs to all of us.”

Ngige said Igbo leaders would meet over 2023 election, adding that the Southeast must discuss to move forward.

He faulted claims that the Igbo are marginalised, blaming some clerics for reinforcing what he said was misinformation.

The minister vowed to resign if he sees evidence of marginalisation of Igbo by the Federal Government.

His words: “If I see any sign of marginalisation against Ndigbo from the APC government, I will resign.

“Some of our people are just making unnecessary noise about marginalisation when there is none.”

He argued that the APC is the best option for Ndigbo.

“Our airport in Enugu will be re-opened before the Christmas because it is going through some serious works.

“APC government is better for our people because we are benefitting more than before. Any other party is a deceit.

“You can see for yourself massive construction going on everywhere in the Southeast including the second Niger Bridge, which the construction firm has assured to deliver to us before the 2022 agreed date.

“So, where is the marginalisation of Ndigbo?”  Ngige queried.

The former senator, who represented Anambra Central Senatorial District, said the Southeast would see a significant upgrade of the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway between November and December once the rain subsides.

Sagay, who chairs the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), said the zoning arrangement has come to stay.

According to him, when a northerner rules for eight years, a southerner would take over.

He said if President Muhammadu Buhari completes his second term in 2023, it will be the turn of the South to produce the President.

According to him, the Southwest, Southeast and Southsouth will compete to produce presidential candidates of all the political parties.

Sagay said: “It is not possible for any northerner to aspire to be the presidential candidate of APC or any other political parties in 2023.

“All the presidential candidates would come from the South. Anyone advocating anything to the contrary is mischievous and out to destroy the party.”

The legal icon explained that an established convention can overrule the law because it has become law.

He said zone was a political arrangement put it in place to remove fear of domination among the constituents.

Also, former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Second Vice President Monday Ubani said jettisoning zoning was capable of setting the country on fire in 2023.

Ubani said zoning of key political offices was designed to cure some of the defects in Nigerian political system.

He noted that power has been rotating since 1999 between the North and the South and should be sustained.

“Nigerians should ignore those saying there is no zoning. We should maintain zoning in the interest of equity, fairness and justice,” he added.

  • Stray bullet kills APC leader at Oshodi

A STRAY bullet allegedly fired by a policeman on escort duty on Sunday night, killed an All Progressives Congress (APC) community leader at Shogunle, Lagos.

The man, identified as Waliu Daudu, was said to have been hit at the back of his head by a bullet allegedly fired by the policeman.

It was learnt that the incident occurred in front of the deceased’s 1, Bello Street, Shogunle, home when he was unpacking the chairs, tables and canopies he rented to the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC), Oshodi Parish, whose harvest, the policeman’s principal, a pastor in another CCC parish simply identified as Genesis, had attended.

Genesis was said to be a visiting pastor and one of the special guests at the harvest.

The policeman was said to have fired the shot around 8pm at Oluwani/Odalume Street to scare hooligans who had allegedly attempted to harass his principal when they were leaving the venue.

However, another account of the incident said the bullet hit Daudu at the venue, but was only noticed when he fell in front of his home at the next street while unpacking the chairs, tables and canopies.

The Nation gathered that the police have arrested the Shepherd of the CCC Oshodi Parish, Superior Evangelist Z. Alabi, in order to get information about the guests invited and those who brought police escorts.

It was learnt that police investigation would ascertain whether the policeman was on lawful duty and if ‘Pastor Genesis’ was entitled to police escort.

At Daudu’s home on Tuesday, his widow, Yemi, was inconsolable, as relatives and sympathisers consoled her.

The woman, who could barely speak, was overheard lamenting about the fate of her four children- Habib, 12, Basita, 9, Basik, 6, and Ali, 2.

She said: “I don’t understand what is happening. I am still confused. I do not know what to do. I was with my husband till 6pm on Sunday when he said he wanted to go and pack his chairs, tables and canopies.

“Then I went to my shop at 20, Bello Street, Shogunle and it was while I was there that someone called to ask me where my husband was. I told the person he went to work and the person said okay.

“A few minutes later, a man was making call near my shop and I heard him saying that a policeman’s bullet had killed Daudu that owned a rental service. He said the man fell in front of his house. Then I ran and held the caller to explain what he was saying.

“I rushed home and truly, my husband was lying in a pool of blood in front of our house. “My husband was a quiet and peaceful man. He was hard working. He also worked as an estate agent.”

The woman’s sister, Rashidat, said policemen came to their home around 8:30pm and removed the body.

She said the family was worried and would appreciate it if the body could be released so that Daudu would be buried accordance to Islamic rites.

“I appeal to the government to give the deceased’s children scholarship so that their father’s wish for them to be educated will be fulfilled,” Rashidat said.

The Nation learnt that the Oshodi Local Government chairman of APC, his deputy and other party members in the area visited Daudu’s home yesterday to commiserate with the family.

Condemning the incident, the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) in Oshodi demanded the immediate withdrawal of all policemen on VIP duties.

It urged Police Commissioner Zubairu Muazu to ensure that the suspect is prosecuted.

Spokesman for the command, Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said investigation was on to ascertain the identity of the policeman, after which action would be taken.

He said at the moment the command was yet to establish who the policeman was and where he came from.

  • Those without one-year membership can’t carry APC’s flag, says Oshiomhole

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday dashed the governorship aspiration of a former Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the Cross Rivers Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Frankland Briyal.

The national chairman declared that only those who have spent at least one year in the party are qualified to contest its ticket.

Oshiomhole, who spoke last night while inaugurating the governorship screening committee, said aside those who have spent at least one year, others who have spent less would require a waiver from the National Working Committee (NWC) to contest.

Briyal joined the APC about two weeks ago when he resigned from his position at the electoral body to contest the governorship election in Bayelsa State on the platform of the APC.

But Oshiomhole said any prospective aspirant would not be eligible to vie for the governorship of Bayelsa and Kogi states, if they are not financial member of the party for a year.

While inaugurating the 14-member screening panel, headed by Senator Hope Uzordinma, the APC National Chairman said it would be unfair to hand the party’s flag to those who just joined when there are well entrenched members of the party angling for the governorship seats in the aforementioned states.

Oshiomhole urged members of the committee to adhere strictly to the guidelines of the party, adding that the NWC reserves the right to grant waivers to any of the aspirants who does not meet the party’s guidelines.

He said the August 29 primaries of the party would take place simultaneously in Lokoja and Yenagoa.

According to him, the party will give aspirants a fair chance to actualise their aspirations.

On behalf of the committee, Uzordinma expressed gratitude to the party for reposing confidence on members of the committee.

He added that they would discharge their assignment without fear or favour.
