Support war against corruption – APC Chieftain urges Nigerians

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger, Kabiru Rijau, says Nigerians must own up ongoing fight against corruption, to save the country from collapse.

Rijau said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) in Minna on Tuesday that those insinuating political sentiments to the war, were selfish and unpatriotic.

According to him, corruption is one of the factors responsible for the nation’s set back and must be fought to a standstill.

He commended the Federal Government for introducing the Whistle Blower policy, saying it would encourage more Nigerians to expose those who diverted funds meant for national development.

“Nigerians should wholeheartedly embrace the programmes in exposing public officers who derive pleasure in looting our treasury.

“Recent discovery of looted public funds through whistle blowers was a clear indication that the system will expose more corrupt Nigerians.

“I strongly suggest to that those who initiated the whistle blower policy be given National Honour for introducing a policy that will eradicate corruption in our midst,” Rijau said.

He advised the government to ensure diligent prosecution of corruption cases, so as to sustain and add value to the war against corruption in the country.

“Our judiciary should compliment the effort of the federal government by punishing those indicted for embezzling public funds,” Rijau added.

Council polls: APC denies circulating guidelines

All Progressives Congress (APC) Lagos State Chapter last night denied materials circulating on social media on the guidelines for aspirants in the forthcoming local government elections.

The party’s Acting Secretary Hakeem Bamgbola told The Nation that the materials were not the position of the party.

“We want Lagosians especially aspirants for various offices to disregard the materials. They did not emanate from the party,” Bamgbola said.

According to him, the guidelines for the aspirants will be duly signed by the party chairman Otunba Henry Ajomale and will be well circulated in the media.

Protesters give Senate three days to recall Ndume

Some persons protesting the suspension of Sen Ali Ndume by the Senate on Tuesday gave the upper legislative chamber three days to recall him or face difficult times.

The protesters, who included some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), barricaded the main entrance to the National Assembly as early as 8:00 a.m., chorusing pro-Ndume songs.

They displayed placards with different inscriptions such as “Ndume Again Insha Allah”, “Who is Afraid of Ibrahim Magu,” “Stop Undermining PMB”’ and “Saraki is a curse”.

They called for the removal of President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, for suspending Ndume (Borno-APC) for six months.

One of the leaders of the protesters, Mr Joseph Okwuama, told newsmen that if the lawmaker was not recalled, they would stage several protests across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for seven days.

Okwuama, who is the National Coordinator, All Progressives Congress (APC) Movement, said the suspension of Ndume, who was also removed as Leader of the Senate late last year, was uncalled for.

“We are talking about corruption in the country. As Nigerian youths, we have to work together in support of the anti-corruption war.

“Corruption is not all about money. What the National Assembly did is corruption; the suspension of Ndume is corruption.

“Ndume’s suspension did not follow due process. The man did not do anything.

“We are giving the National Assembly three days and if they refuse, Nigerians will go to the streets of Abuja and protest for one week,” he said.

Muhammad Tanko, who led indigenes of Borno South, Ndume’s constituency, to join others in the demonstration, said that the constituency could not afford not to have representation in the senate for six months.

“The suspension of our senator for six months is illegal when the Constitution allows for the suspension of only 14 days.

“Saraki must go. He knows what Ndume did for him before he became President,” Tanko said.

A female protester, Mrs Naima Sale, wife of the Chairman, IDPs in Karama Jiji Camp in Abuja, said that the lawmaker had been of help to IDPs and should not be made to suffer for nothing.

Ndume was suspended on Wednesday by the Senate for calling for the investigation of alleged fake customs papers in the importation of a vehicle for Saraki and certificate forgery against Sen. Dino Melaye (APC-Kogi).

An online platform had accused Saraki of importing a Range Rover SUV without paying appropriate imports duty and attempting to clear the vehicle with falsified papers.

Melaye was accused of falsely claiming to have graduated from Ahmadu Bello University.

The senate dismissed both allegations and sanctioned Ndume by suspending him for six months for raising the alarm.

  • Lack of funds may scuttle APC mid term convention

Lack of funds may scuttle APC mid term convention

There are uncertainties whether the mid-term national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) scheduled for April 29, 2017, will still go ahead as scheduled as the party is yet to put machinery in place for the hosting of the convention barely 26 days away from the scheduled date.

After its consultative meeting with governors of these party in early March,  the party had announced that the mid-term non-elective convention will take place on April 29 to review the activities of the party and the government.

The party had also assured that it will set up a convention planning committee before the end of March, but there are no indication that the Party was planning the convention as the planning committee was yet to be in place.

But the National Publicity Secretary of the party,  Malls Bolaji Abdullahi said plans for the convention was still in progress as the party has not taken any decisions. To either cancel or postpone the convention.

The Nation gathered on Monday that the constitution review committee set up by the National Working Committee to recommend amendments to the party constitution has abandoned the work apparently due to lack of resources to finance its activities.

The committee which has representatives of the governor and national Assembly was yet to begin its work on the document that is supposed to be ratified at the convention.

The party, after been criticised for not holding a national convention as stipulated in its constitution, declared in a statement that it will hold a national convention not later than April this year.

Sources close to the party told The Nation that one of the governors of the party had told the leadership of the party during their meeting in March that the NWC cannot fix a convention for the National Executive Committee.

The party, through the National Publicity Secretary, had announced that it will hold the convention to review activities of the part and fill positions in the leadership that were vacated by former national officers, saying “the vacancies to be filled occurred principally from political appointments, deaths and resignations.

The Congress to fill the vacancies would be followed closely by another Congress to nominate delegates into the mid-term non-elective Convention of the Party.

“The Congresses will be followed by the National Caucus meeting, and finalised with the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Party, which will consider and set the dates for the National Convention, which is expected to hold not later than April of 2017.”

According to Article 25 (A)(i) of the APC constitution which state that the National Convention of the Party shall be held once in Two (2) years at a date, venue and time to be recommended by the National Working Committee and approved by the National Executive Committee subject to the giving of the statutory notices to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and at least fourteen (14) days notice given to members eligible to attend.

It also says that the constitution provides that the National Executive Committee may summon an emergency National Convention at any time provided at least seven (7) days notice of the meeting shall be given to all members eligible to attend.

It was gathered that the some APC governors and the Presidency has decided not to fund the party, asking the leadership to source its own funds, while dues from political appointees have not been forthcoming.

Recently, Kano state governor was quoted as saying that the governors will not take state resources to fund the party, saying what the party was going through in terms of financing was part of the change going on in the country.

The governor was quoted as “It is still part of the change mantra. People were used to getting cheap money, some people struggle to be part of the APC officials in order to make money but the Buhari here is not like that, so if the party has programmes on the ground; the government have no problem to see how the party can be funded but let me tell you the issue of taking government money to fund the party does not arise now.”

When contacted on phone, the National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi told newsmen that the National Working Committee has not taken any decision to cancel or suspend the convention, pointing out that plans were still ongoing to host the convention.

  •  APC must mediate in Senate, Presidency face-off – Don

A Professor of Political Science, Femi Otubanjo, said on Thursday that the All Progressives Congress (APC) must mediate in the current face-off between the Senate and the Presidency.

Otubanjo, who works with the National Open University of Nigeria, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday.

According to him, APC, being the ruling party has a role to play in ensuring that the process of governance in the country is not thwarted by the face-off.

The don was reacting to decision of the Senate to suspend legislative approval for 27 Resident Electoral Commissioners forwarded to it by President Muhammadu Buhari.

However, the Senate at its sitting presided by Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, suspend consideration of the request by two weeks pending when the President removes Ibrahim Magu, as Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Otubanjo said that the APC should not allow the face-off to adversely affect governance.

”There is a ruling political party and fortunately, the majority of the people in the National Assembly are APC members including the President, and the Federal Government is APC government too.

”There ought to be a platform for discussing and reconciling whatever proposal or nomination the executive is bringing to the legislature for approval.

”We saw President Trump when he was trying to repeal the Obamacare, he called his party members in the parliament to a breakfast table to discuss his proposal, though, it did not work, but that is how things are done.

”The party leaders have a role to play to ensure smooth working relationship between the Senate and the Presidency.

”The party leaders should initiate mediation by calling their members in the Senate and the Presidency to a round table to talk and settle their disagreement.

”By doing so, they will be able to succeed and smoothly deliver their campaign promises to the people,” he said.

    Tinubu a working made-in-Nigeria product – Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, has described the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as a true example of a working made in Nigeria product.

Asiwaju, on behalf of the First Lady, my entire family, all your admirers at home and across the world, we say a big thank you for your large-heartedness, benevolence and visionary leadership that you have unleashed on this nation. You are a Statesman par excellence, my leader, our leader – Ambode[/quote]
Describing the theme of the Colloquium, ‘Make it in Nigeria – Use What We Make-Make What We Use”, Ambode said he was an unrepentant convert of the ideology, noting that Lagos state has demonstrated it with the successful partnership with Kebbi state on Lake Rice.

Mr Abayomi Adesanya, the APC Publicity Secretary in Ondo, made the observation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Friday.

NAN reports that President Buhari returned from London to Nigeria after 51 days of medical vacation in the early hours of Friday.

Adesanya said: “the rumours of the death of the President were the handiwork of some unpatriotic Nigerians and the opposition who were desperate to weaken and derail the anti-corruption fight of the President.

“But, we thank the God Almighty for the safe return of the people’s president.

“We enjoin Nigerians to continue praying for Buhari-Osinbajo led-Federal Government to succeed in putting our country on the path of glory among the committee of developed nations’’.

“The President’s return has vindicated our claim that the President is not terminally ill as being portrayed in some quarters opposed to the anti-corruption war of APC-led Federal Government.

“I, on behalf of APC, also apologised to Nigerians on the role played by Gov. Ayodele Fayose in making himself the “prophet of death’’ while the President was abroad attending to his death

“Fayose has been put to shame by Buhari’s hale and hearty arrival on Friday,’’ he said.

  • Why Nigeria is undeveloped – Senator

Why Nigeria is undeveloped – Senator

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream) Chief Tayo Alasoadura has attributed ethnicity, political corruption and religious bigotry as the bane of development in the country.

Making particular reference to the book written by the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the Senator representing Ondo Central said since the early 1960s, political and financial corruption continued to remain an obstacle to Nigeria development.

Alasoadura spoke on Wednesday as a Guest lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife during the 2017 Distinguished Guest Lecture/Award Ceremony organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences in the University.

The lecture entitled Leadership: The bane of development in Nigeria was delivered on his behalf by his Senior Legislative Aide (SLA)Wale Alake.

The lawmaker noted that the Transparency International (IT) had ranked Nigeria as 132nd most corrupt country out of 182 countries worldwide.

According to him, “as we speak, whistle blowers are responding to the new government policy on the revelation of financial crimes, stressing that mind-boggling sums were being discovered in the possession of totally ‘unconscionable’ Nigerians.

He noted that Nigerians are now discovering why the country is undeveloped and wallowing in the midst of plenty.

However, Alasoadura enthused that Nigerians have taken their destiny into their hands by electing President Muhammadu Buhari to rescue the country from treacherous and dishonest leaders.

The former Commissioner for Finance in the state recalled that in 2015, President Buhari told Nigerians that corrupt officials had stolen more than $150b from government coffers within the last 10 years.

He pointed out that recent unfolding revelations have shown that the President was right.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Chieftain noted that several infrastructures and industries could have been built with the ‘stolen funds now in private pockets.

Alasoadura urged the youths particularly students in higher institutions across the country, who he described as leaders of tomorrow to think, find and develop better leaders for Nigeria to facilitate progress.

  • APC prays for PDP

    APC prays for PDP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has prayed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) resolved its leadership crisis soon to enable it to take up responsibility as a viable opposition.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, in Abuja on Tuesday, the party said there was the need for PDP to be vibrant to provide the critical opposition.

It said, “we pray for them to put their house in order soon because we believe that democracy is better served when the opposition is alive.

“However, we also know the PDP can only begin to take steps towards recovery if they stop peddling conspiracy theories and blaming imaginary enemies.’’

It recalled that Sen. Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the party had alleged that the APC instructed the Police to prevent its members from meeting at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja.

Makarfi, according to it, had also alleged that the APC had somehow influenced the Appeal Court decision which ruled against him as the PDP National Caretaker Committee Chairman.

“Neither of these allegations is true in any respect, the Police does not take instructions from the APC.

“The police have explained why they stopped the Makarfi group from meeting at the ICC.

“If the factional PDP is dissatisfied with the police explanation, they could seek further clarifications from the police or pursue alternative means of redress,’’ the APC said.

It added that so far, the Makarfi faction of the PDP had not faulted the police or provided any proof for its allegations against the APC, a development that was surprising.

It said that this was “especially so considering that Makarfi and his group had in their ranks, individuals who are experienced to know that without evidence, such allegations can easily be dismissed as baseless.

“Such allegation without evidence can, therefore, be ignored by all right-thinking members of the public, including the APC.’’

The APC added that Nigerians should be worried by the behaviour of PDP factions which was capable of eroding the confidence of Nigerians in the judiciary.

It added that even as the PDP battled for survival, Nigerians should observe restraint in the interest of the country`s democracy, saying that APC had no interest in the internal crisis of PDP.

Thugs attack Ankio Briggs, anti-Dickson protesters

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson, on Tuesday, boasted that only the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would win future elections in the state.

The governor advised other party members including loyalists of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to renounced their membership and join the PDP if they had ambitions to contest any future electoral positions in the state.

Dickson spoke at the Peace Park, where a crowd of PDP loyalists mobilised to celebrate his first year of his second term and five years in office as the governor.

The governor, who danced to Ijaw war songs before addressing a mammoth crowd of his supporters said: “This state is unshakably PDP. When they tried to be funny, don’t worry, the reason I am Ofurumapepe leading this party is that when the battle never tough, Ofurumapepe doesn’t come out.

“Anybody who wants to contest an election, let me put you on notice, the only platform that can win an election in this state under my leadership is the PDP. Which election will be tougher than the one we won with me as the candidate?

“We will lead the party to win all elections in the state, God willing. We have nothing to hide. We are busy chasing the challenges of government in Bayelsa and at this time our hands as we have always said are opened.

“The doors of PDP in Bayelsa are open even for those who made mistakes, our big umbrella is waiting to receive all of them back. If they don’t come back no way for elections in the state. Tell them. If they come back, accept them”.

The Peace Park, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, was the destination for all lovers of Dickson, as he marked his anniversary.

It was fanfare as a crowd of supporters adorned in their best attires marched the streets of Yenagoa to show Dickson love on Valentine day.

As early as 7:00 a.m, supporters of the Restoration Government from various local government areas started processions from Igbogene, the outskirts of Yenagoa to Peace Park, located opposite Government House, Onopa, a distance of over 40km.

The residents who marched according to their local government areas of Brass, Yenagoa, Nembe, Kolokuma-Opokuma, Southern Ijaw, Ekeremor and Ogbia, defied the scorching sun as they, drummed, sang and danced on the streets.

Hundreds of groups including youths carrying pro-Dickson‘s banners, placards and other Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) materials to rejoice with their governor.

Women were the most colourful in their different uniform wrappers, blouses and scarfs with a touch of red, Valentine’s colour.

The venue was congested with youths, all political appointees, federal and state legislators, national and state PDP’s executive members, security operatives, journalists and traditional rulers.

But prior to the event thugs disrupted an anti-Dickson protest led by a Niger Delta activist, popularly referred to the Amazone of the Niger Delta, Ankio Briggs.

Briggs and other protesters assembled around the Tombia Roundabout to commence a demonstration against Dickson‘s decision to confine herdsmen in the state within the Bayelsa Palm area of the state.

The activist, who came from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to lead the protest under the auspices of Ijaw Women Connect (IWC) was disorganised by thugs in the presence of security operatives including the police.

Briggs said the thugs injured some of the protesters and stole her telephone handsets, identity cards and other personal effects.

    [news_list display=”tag” tag=”Dickson” count=”2″ show_more=”on”]

She said they pushed her down in the presence of a senior police officer complaining that the police failed to protect her and other protesters.

She, however, said the demonstration was not against the leadership style of the governor but a “love rally” to disagree with the decision of the governor to allocate land to herdsmen.

But in a swift reaction, the government through the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Jonathan Obuebite, said the activist was attacked by her own thugs.

“The information we receive as a government is that Briggs mobilised people to Bayelsa for a protest. But they people turned against her and attacked her because she could not pay them the mobilisation fee”, he said.

Obuebite, who sympathised with Briggs, thanked security agencies for calming down the situation and saving the life of the activist.

But Dickson insisted that the PDP would bounce back and regain the control of the centre in 2019 after resolving their internal crisis.

He said he had transformed the state and brought development high used to be fantasies to realities adding that the people of the state now have the best hospitals, roads and schools under his government.

“Everywhere you go, they tell you that one of the safest states in e country is Bayelsa because you said no to people who practice violence.

“You have seen massive roads and we will continue to build the roads, hospitals and schools which they could not build,” he said.

He noted that the hardship in the state was caused by APC at the federal level accusing the party of destroying the economy.

He said under the APC, naira which used to be N160 to the dollar had skyrocketed to N500.

The governor, however, promised to lift an embargo in employment in the state immediately he completed his reforms in the public service.

He said his government would make more appointments to empower the people and reward persons who worked for his victory.

Speaking at the occasion, the National Publicity Secretary, PDP and former Minister for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said when he first visited Bayelsa under former Governor Goodluck Jonathan, the state was a mini-village.

But he said Dickson had transformed the stage into a town describing the governor as one of the pillars of the PDP.

“With governor Dickson, PDP has a future”, he said adding that PDP managed the country for 17 years only for APC to destroy the economy.

He said all the institutions built by the PDP were being used by APC to fight corruption in the country and insisted that in 2019, the party would bounce back.

In their goodwill message, other speakers eulogised the governor saying he had redefined development in the state.
