  • Ambode’s wife declares LTV Xmas fair open

Lagos State Governor’s wife  Mrs Bolanle Ambode opened at the weekend the 31st Lagos State Television (LTV) Christmas funfair.

Mrs Ambode expressed delight at the conduct of the yearly children fun and entertainment event.

The yearly funfair programme attracts about 35,000 children since inception.

She described the number as a measure of good capacity for planning and execution, on the part of the LTV management.

She advised the management that the message of the Christmas season which centres on true love, forgiveness, kindness, peace and joy should not be forgotten as people go about seeking for fun and entertainment across the state.

Calling for caution among the children when handling the swings and other entertainment equipment provided by LTV, Mrs Ambode urged other school children, parents, guardians and school owners to be part of the unlimited fun.

“On the part of LTV, please ensure vigilance, good crowd control and tight security,” she said.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Steve Ayorinde said that the theme of the 31stedition of the Christmas funfair is designed to extend frontiers of merrymaking in the festive season in spite of the economic realities in the country.

The economic situation, according to the Commissioner, will not reduce the standard and quality of services offered by LTV.

He said LTV Christmas Funfair has grown to become the clear leader and reference point today being a renowned platform for recreation and social interaction filling the void created by the sudden departure of famous Department Stores across the state that operated Christmas Grottos some decades ago.

Ayorinde said the premises of LTV will become a one-stop fun centre for every member of the family for the next 30 days.

“As the children visit the Grotto to see Santa Claus, parents could also do their shopping within the De Blue Roof while the whole family sits back and relax with thrilling music from top grade and upcoming musicians,” he said.

  • I’ve political will to tackle traffic gridlock – Ambode

I’ve political will to tackle traffic gridlock – Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday assured the people of the State of his strong political will to take tough decisions and implement effective strategies to bring about a robust traffic management system in the State.

Ambode, who stated this at the Traffic Management and Transportation Summit organised by the State Government, said as a government, his administration is keenly committed to make Lagos work for all, and that effective traffic management, for him, is a good place to start.

The Governor observed that with the realities on ground, there is the need for practical and innovative solutions to address the traffic challenges confronting the State to deliver immediate dividends and future aspirations.

He said: “Lagos, in many ways, is a victim of its own success as many people leave other states and travel to Lagos seeking better opportunities. More Nigerians want to reside in Lagos and this obviously comes with some challenges.”

“As one of the leading commercial centres and an emerging City-State, we need to go back to the drawing board and agree on how our transportation sector can be effectively and efficiently operated to support the kind of trade and investment we want to continually attract.”

“We need to collectively examine how transportation sector can improve public sector delivery through better institutional framework, quality transport infrastructure and then tackle wasteful and socially harmful transport patterns. You will agree with me that the ease of travelling, mobility and communication are critical fuels for our State economic engine,” the Governor said.

Reflecting on the circumstances of high population and pressing need for economic growth, Governor Ambode said there is a strong need for stakeholders in the transport sector to evaluate and articulate smarter and effective strategies that would reduce congestion across the roads.

While emphasising the need for all stakeholders to work together to ensure a commuter-friendly and productive Lagos that promotes a shared sense of vision and leadership opportunities for all, the Governor stressed the need for the consideration of how to make other means of transportation more viable and attractive to reduce the pressure on the roads.

He added: “As a Government that is keen on promoting business and creating wealth opportunities for our residents, we are committed to seeking and funding substantial and comprehensive solutions to traffic challenges, therefore we are ready to take tough recommendations you come out with.”

“We owe it to the people to ensure Lagos works for all. Tackling traffic is a good place to start; a good place to begin the significant change that our people expect from us. Let us make Lagos work for us all,” the Governor said.

Earlier in his welcome address, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Dayo Mobereola said the summit was put together in furtherance of Governor Ambode’s determination and commitment to genuinely address the traffic challenges confronting the State.

He added that the summit was also aimed at jointly developing workable system and solution with all stakeholders with the view to articulate and share knowledge and explore innovative approaches to free the roads and help in developing a robust traffic management.

On his part, Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi said because of its strategic importance to Nigeria’s economy, Lagos accounts for about 70 percent of the country’s transportation network and over 30 percent of vehicular density in Nigeria.

He added that there are about 40 petroleum tank farms in Lagos, and that the best way to tackle traffic gridlock is full enforcement of traffic laws and regulations.

While calling for synergy among the enforcement agencies, Oyeyemi also urged the State Government to establish Mobile Traffic Courts so as to further boost and compliment traffic enforcement.

The summit was with the theme: “Tackling Current, Evolving and Future Traffic Management Needs of Lagos State.”

There were sector perspectives from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Nigerian Police, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), among others, while the lead paper was presented by Dr. Gboyega Banjo, a traffic management expert who worked with the World Bank for 17 years.

  • ‘Ambode’ll be best governor’

    ‘Ambode’ll be best governor’

Chairman of the Conference of Executive Secretaries of Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas in Lagos State Alabi Kolade David has faulted Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s critics.

He said the governor was meticulous in planning and execution of his administration’s programmes.

David said by the time the results of the governor’s  efforts become visible, Ambode would be adjudged the best governor in Nigeria.

The executive secretary of Bariga Local Council Development Area said the governor had performed creditably.

He said: “When Ambode came on board, he said he would practise government by service and make life easier for Lagosians.

“I don’t understand why some people are saying the governor is slow. If I may ask, slow in what?

“Ambode met a lot of abandoned projects and he gave instruction that all should be completed. If you go round Lagos State, you will find out that many projects are ongoing.”

  • Ambode’s Lagos: Beyond cynicism and distraction

In-spite of explicable concerns over traffic gridlock as well as pockets of traffic robbery incidents across the State, it vital to affirm that the Akinwunmi Ambode Administration in Lagos State has commendably discharged its responsibilities within such a short time in office. Of late, the much talked about traffic gridlock in the metropolis is steadily giving way. With the reformation of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, LASTMA, Lagos residents have begun to notice remarkable improvement in traffic situation in the State. Same goes for security situation as occurrence of traffic and armed robbery operations have drastically dwindled across the State.

The current improved traffic and security condition in the State is the outcome of months of painstaking planning by the State government and relevant stakeholders. Governance is not as simplistic and straightforward as some people would want to think. Lots of methodical and strategic thinking go into formulation and execution of government policies and programmes. From the outset, the vision of the Ambode administration is to transform Lagos into a 24/7 economy. To achieve this goal, the security component has always been accorded a top priority. Therefore, one of the earliest tasks of Governor Ambode was to meet with key stakeholders in the State to advance security course.  On the occasion, over One Billion Naira was realised as cash donations from various corporate organisations and individuals while others made commitments to provide other vital technical support.

Consequently, the Ambode administration has made concerted efforts to fortify the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), in partnership with the State Police Command, to further enhance its operational capability. This is reflected in the handing over of 2 surveillance helicopters, 10 armoured tanks, 10 brand new Hilux vehicles and115 new power bikes, to the State Police Command and RRS respectively. This is in addition to the purchase of 100 new squad cars for a new initiative tagged Special Operation Service (SOS), which will harmonize community policing in partnership with the Rapid Response Squad (RRS). Likewise, an integrated security and emergency control platform that interface with all security networks in the State has been set up. The outcome of all this investment in security is the relative calm and peace being experienced in the State.

The improved traffic situation in the State is equally a product of multifaceted strategies being deployed by the State government. One of such is the restructuring of LASTMA. Another is road-repair. For the Ambode administration, which actually came on board in the thick of the rainy season, road rehabilitation is a necessity. In Lagos, the rainy season often has serious implications for human and vehicular movement.  Since significant portions of the roads have been largely damaged by the rains, the Ambode administration came up with “Operation fix all potholes”, which is geared towards ridding all roads of potholes to enhance a hitch free vehicular movement. By defying the prolonged rainy season in its road rehabilitation’s quest, the administration has disregarded a universally held belief that road maintenance work is seldom done during the rains.

Through this process, over 230 roads have been improved across the State. These include Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Mongoro-Cement-Dopemu under bridge axis, Epe-Ijebu -Ode road, Odumola-Poka/College road junction axis, Ado road, Ajah, Obalende bridge descent inward NIPOST,  Lekki-Epe expressway, Elemoro-Abijo axis,   Billings way, Oregun,  Ashabi Cole street, Alausa, Abdul Ouadri Adebiyi street, Magodo Ph II among others. This is aside major rehabilitation works being done on the Ejigbo-Ikotun road, Moshalasi-Ayobo road, ACME road among others. Meanwhile, it is imperative to emphasize that the exercise covers and favours every Division, Senatorial district as well as Local Government Council Area in the State.

It is, however, important to stress that the palliative works being carried out on some strategic roads across the state are not meant to provide permanent solution but temporary relief for Lagos residents pending the setting in of dry season, when real asphalt works will be applied to the depressed surface. Considering the level of work done so far on the roads, in addition to several on-going commitments such as the newly commissioned Mile 12-Ikorodu BRT lane and busses, it is expected that significant improvement will soon begin to take place in road transportation across the state.

In the health sector, the administration is equally making appreciable progress as the governor recently commissioned 20 Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) Ambulances and 26 Transport Ambulances. The aim is to bring quality healthcare service closer to the people, particularly during emergency situations. It is also aimed at widening the coverage of emergency services beyond the metropolis to the hinterland. The ambulances, which are to be deployed free of charge for Lagosians, are part of Ambode’s promise to run an all inclusive government.

Similarly, more paramedic staff and special medical coordinators have been employed to ensure 24 hours service to the citizens. There are also plans to equip all General Hospitals in the state with new mobile X-Ray machines to reduce the cost of patients doing X-Ray outside the hospitals.  In same vein, funds have been approved for homegrown cochlear implant surgery, under a special programme dedicated to restoring the hearing ability of those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Cochlear implantation is a hearing device implanted into a deaf patient’s ear through surgery, thus helping to convert sounds into impulses which enable the patient to hear. A 64 year old man has already undergone the surgery successfully.

The education sector is also receiving commensurate attention from the state government. In a bid to improve primary education in the state, 1300 teachers have been recruited into all public primary schools across the State. Being the foundation of education at all levels, the Ambode administration is poised to strengthen the quality of the Universal Basic Education Programme in Lagos State to give pupils a solid and sound academic background. The exercise is equally expected to achieve a balanced workforce of teachers in public primary schools in the State.

In order to reduce the economic and emotional burdens of State pensioners, the sum of N11bn has been released to pay off pension liabilities owed the mainstream retirees and the retirees in Local Government Areas since 2010. The development is part of efforts to find a holistic solution to the issue of payment of pension entitlements to retirees under the pay-as-you-go pension scheme which was discontinued in April 2007, as well as outstanding accrued pension rights due to retirees under the contributory pension scheme.  This intervention will go a long way in ameliorating the sufferings of retirees in the state.

Also, the civil service, which oils the machinery of government, has been restructured for tactical re-positioning. Some MDAs have been re-aligned while new ones have been created to align with the vision of the administration. Similarly, government agencies with rented office accommodation are back in the secretariat. The goal is to cut the cost of governance as almost three billion naira is currently being saved monthly through this initiative.

The past five months, no doubt, represent a significant milestone in the life of the Ambode administration. It is the foundational period when solid socio-political and economic frameworks have been put in place. Now that preparatory job is done with, Lagosians are reassured of a better and brighter future.

  • Domestic violence a real tragedy – Ambode

Domestic violence a real tragedy – Ambode

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State says domestic violence continues to be a real tragedy faced by many citizens in the society and requires collaborative effort to address.

Ambode said this in Lagos on Friday night, at a dinner to end the Domestic Violence Awareness Month organised by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT).

He was represented at the event by the Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule.

The governor said aside legislation, a sustained, coordinated and multi-level approach across all sectors of the society was needed to end domestic violence.

He said that all the sectors in the society, such as the police, health, justice, education and social services must be involved.

“My administration is fully committed to drastically increase the rate of conviction of offenders to serve as deterrent based on the fact that domestic violence is considered a serious crime in Lagos State.

“We have ensured that the right laws are in place, infrastructure and support system are being worked on, and I recently approved the purchase of rescue vehicles to respond timely to distress call.

“We are in the process of establishing more shelter and transit homes as support services for victims and would-be survivors of domestic violence.

“The government alone cannot do it and I urge you all to continue to partner and participate in these sensitisation campaigns as this is the key driver of the fight against sexual and gender-based violence.

“Your partnership and participation will bring succor to victims in Lagos State and ultimately eradicate this menace from our society,” Ambode said.

Also speaking, Mrs Funmilayo Tejuosho, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Mushin Constituency 1, described domestic violence as a crime against humanity.

Tejuosho urged law enforcement agencies to ensure proper and total enforcement of the provisions of the landmark Prevention Against Domestic Violence Law, 2007.

Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State, said that domestic violence was a pervasive and heinous violation of human right as well as a threat to development and peace in the world.

According to him, if this crime is left unaddressed, it poses a serious threat to the future generation.

In his remarks, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, promised that the law enforcement agency would put in its best to curb the menace.

Owoseni who was represented by Mr Biodun Odule, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, also urged the public to speak out and report cases of violence within their areas.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Domestic Violence Awareness Month, commemorated every October since 1995, is to create awareness, break the silence and end violence once and for all.
