Monarch asks Ambode to strengthen traditional institutions

The newly installed Kakanfo of Ilara Kingdom, Epe Lagos State Otunba Gbolahan Nowoola has urged Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to strengthen traditional institutions for effective service to the people.

Speaking during his installation at Epe, the monarch said there was urgent need to mobilise the people at the grassroots to realise government’s policies and prgrammes.

Nowoola added that the donation of vehicles by Ambode to first-class kings in the state was commendable; stressing that it was a support for grassroots development.

He said: “Governor Ambode respects royal institutions; recently he gave all the first-class kings two vehicles to support their kingdom.

“This will go a long way in garnering support for government’s policies and programmes, even as it would help in transforming the state. It is a tradition laid by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and followed by Mr. Babatunde Fashola.’’

He said as the newly installed Kakanfo of Ilara, his brief is to defend the people against external aggression.

“My people should expect me to defend them in case of any fight. I am expected to mediate in family crisis and settle misunderstanding arising from boundary disputes that could lead to war,” he said.

He maintained that as a former soldier, he had the quality to lead and defend his people when the need arises.

He noted that his new post is in compliance with tradition. “My forefathers did it, we fought the colonial authorities when we were still under the Ijebu Kingdom.

“The colonial masters had to carve Ilara, Epe, Somolu and Sagamu out of Ijebu Province and merged us with the Lagos Province to whittle our strength,” he said.

He called for support for President Muhammadu Buhari in order to achieve government’s drive for a better society.

“The man has not even started working but things have been working because of his name. The new slogan in town is that the fear of Buhari is the beginning of wisdom. Nigerians should support him,” he said.

  • Kudos to Governor Ambode

SIR: I want to sincerely thank Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State for having started to fulfill some of his electoral promises which he made to the people of the state during his campaign to be elected as the governor.

Among the promises was his resolve to end the trend of casualization in the state’s Civil Service. Recently, he made good his promise by regularising the employment status of the medical doctors who were engaged some years ago as casuals. Many doctors who benefitted from this gesture of the governor have heaved a sigh of relief having been saved from many years of tortuous wait during the period that they were in that pitiable condition.

It is noteworthy that the affected doctors, during the period of the endless wait, did not allow their plight to affect their zeal to give in their best at work. This could be testified to by many patients who patronize the various government hospitals scattered in the state. They held their heads and worked hard during the period of wait.

The ugly effect of their status if they had remained as casuals would have been that they would stagnate on the same position forever without any growth! These are young and brilliant doctors, who would have wasted away due to frustration, and for no fault of theirs.

While thanking Governor Ambode for regularizing the employment status of the doctors, I wish to respectfully appeal to him to go further steps to kindly look into the plight of many lawyers, most of them in their prime, who were also engaged as casual workers many years ago into the state Civil Service. Some of these lawyers have spent almost between five and 10 years and have stagnated on the same position that they were engaged! Many of them are very brilliant with bright career prospects if they are given the opportunity to grow in the state employment.

I also, recall that some of them were not paid their salaries for the period that they agitated for improvement on their conditions of service.

I believe that you will, also kindly review their case and bring smiles on their faces like their medical counterparts. As you do this, may God continue to equip you with wisdom, good health of body and mind to enable you continue to give the good people of Lagos State dividend of good and responsible governance, which is based on transparency and accountability, to the admiration of all, including your fellow governors, who would like to emulate you in the governance of their states.

    Association rallies support for Ambode

A community-based development group, Lafiaji Community Association (LCA), has enjoined Lagosians to rise in support of the government in tackling insecurity and traffic snarls.

The association lauded the Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration for canvassing a new strategy to combat crime.

Governor Ambode at the end of a retreat for executive council members, over the weekend, urged the police to step up their surveillance and come up with new strategies to tackle crime.

LCA president Babatunde Abozos urged residents to be security conscious.

He said:“Our people have to be vigilant in every aspect. Though, God is the only person that secures our lives; we have to be wary of what goes on around us. Any suspicious move should be reported to security agencies. We must also checkmate the activities of hoodlums and commercial bus drivers that hide under the guise of fighting for political parties to create chaos in the polity. On our own, we are ready to give the present administration our full support particularly in the area of community development.”

The association’s former Vice President, Ayo Benson said the association would contribute towards youths’ development.

Benson said: “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop. The number of jobless graduates is alarming and this I think, should be looked into with utmost urgency. We have uncountable graduates without jobs and they have families to cater for. Frustration sometimes forces them into nefarious activities. If people are employed, their level of thinking will change and they will be more useful to the society.”

He lamented the incessant epileptic power supply, urging government to intervene quickly.

“Electricity is very important in our country and people believe that our electricity is not good; that’s why a lot of industries has moved out of our country. If our electricity is improved, I believe a lot of these companies would return and that will creat more job opportunities to the youths,” he said.

He warned the youths to eschew criminal activities.

  • LASTMA and Ambode’s demand for civility in traffic management

LASTMA and Ambode’s demand for civility in traffic management

Lagos Governor, Ambode, is the new Sheriff in town who thinks Lagosians and Lagos deserve better, and believes discipline and civility are key. Though mis-understood, he sees the forest for the tree as he governs Lagos.

DRIVING on the streets of Lagos has always been a hassle. For a city that is over ten times overpopulated and suffered decades of no investment in road infrastructure pre-1999, vehicular traffic congestion is expected to be an unfortunate part of its culture. New York, Cairo, London are just some of the few mega cities around the world that suffer from the same challenge.

However, the traffic congestion on most Lagos roads has become unbearable for many road users lately. The social media postings of many Lagosians recently has been laced with their frustrations about the situation. They complain that the trips that used to take 30 minutes now last double or triple the time. Every morning, Facebook and Twitter is filled with pictures of unhappy drivers, snailing their way to their businesses and offices. There is a lot of cyber anger out there, but unfortunately it is all aimed at the wrong guy.

When former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu created the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) by signing it into law in the year 2000, many residents thought it was a timely idea. Finally, an agency of the state government had been empowered to reduce deaths, injuries and economic losses from road traffic accidents, conflicts, congestion and delays on the public roads in the state by employing modern traffic management techniques. The agency also created jobs for many thousands.

Soon, most Lagosians began to see the wisdom in creating the agency. In fact, some states now have their versions of LASTMA. The officers of the agency became the most feared on Lagos roads. The fear of LASTMA became the beginning of wisdom. Every driver’s worst fear was to see a man or woman in cream-coloured shirt and maroon trousers knock on their windows or sternly ask them to park their cars on the side of the road. When that happened, you either begin talking very fast or start calling your government contact. Or, as a final resort, prepare to pay a heavy fine. No one wanted that, so most former offenders learnt to keep traffic rules. Defaulters were punished and knew not to commit the offence again. Life was getting good.

However, the story changed when certain corrupt LASTMA officers began to implement another set of rules they had written for themselves. They found a loophole in the system and exploited it mercilessly. Instead of preventing traffic gridlocks, they began hunting offenders and taking bribes. Some would create impossible situations on the roads and await unsuspecting victims. Some even tampered with traffic lights simply to ensnare innocent drivers. Cars properly parked were sometimes towed away and the owners left in distress. LASTMA officers became almost lawless; Lagos’ Enfant Terrible.

One of the first things the new administration under Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was to go did was to seek to re-brand LASTMA and re-jig its operations. Having attended countless town hall meetings and read reports from focus group discussions during the election campaigns, Governor Ambode knew the LASTMA he was inheriting needed to change to fit the vision he has for the state.

So, he ordered that all seized vehicles in the possession of LASTMA be released. The Transport Ministry also announced some new guidelines for the officers of the agency, one of which meant adopting a system where traffic offenders are booked instead of confiscating their vehicles. Oluseyi Whenu, the permanent secretary of the ministry of Transport, said the new policy is aimed at ensuring the free flow of traffic in the metropolis.

Mr. Whenu said the government was implementing a better traffic management and documentation procedure where traffic offenders are booked and given a grace period for payment and defaulters apprehended at home through the information on the motor vehicle database.

“Since LASTMA officials are a reflection of the state government, they should ensure that their activities add value to the government’s covenant with Lagos residents to make life easier for them,” he said.

Since this announcement, there has been a marked drop in the efficacy of the field officers in LASTMA. They have almost totally abandoned their duty posts. There used to be at least two sets of LASTMA officers on the Eko Bridge every morning. These days, you would be lucky to find one at his duty post between the Mainland and Ikoyi. Drivers used to avoid the BRT lanes like plagues. These days, private car owners and Danfo bus drivers are so bold that they would use the BRT lane right in front of the Government House at Marina. No one stops them because LASTMA officers are sulking. The big babies!

That is why the city is experiencing such traffic gridlock. LASTMA has downed tools and Lagosians are suffering for it. Robberies in traffic are back. So are the heartaches that come with accidents and injuries.

It is heartening that members of the public now know whom to blame for this. The Lagos State House of Assembly has summoned the General Manager of LASTMA Mr Bashir Braimah, to explain the persistent gridlock. Mr. Jude Idimogu, representing the Oshodi-Isolo II, said the gridlock was as a result of the deliberate action of LASTMA officers in reaction to the demand by Governor Ambode that they behave better at their jobs.

“Many of the officers will be at the traffic prone areas, standing akimbo and be watching the situation unperturbed,” Idimogu said.

Mr. Tunde Braimoh, another representative for Kosofe II went further to ask the Lagos Government to disengage the officers for displaying such behaviour.

“Now that the governor came up with a modern way of enforcement, what the officers do now contradicts their ‘modus operandi’. If there is need to drop all of them and recruit others, we have to do so. They cannot disregard the law of the House and the state,” Braimoh said.

Mr. Segun Olulade, representing Epe II said, “(The) transport situation has degenerated in the state because of lawlessness of drivers and LASTMA. I have seen some sort of collaboration in sabotaging the government. Some so called LASTMA disobey traffic laws.”

Any society that allows a section of itself to operate above the rule of law toys with danger. Lagosians must support the stance of their beloved governor that LASTMA operates with the bounds of civility while carrying out their legitimate duty. They must stand with Governor Ambode in his quest to modernise the process of traffic management in Lagos.

LASTMA should not hold us to ransom. They are not bigger than the people. Governor Ambode, please deal with them! Within the bounds of the law, of course.

Ambode tasks police to review strategy on crime prevention

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has urged the State Police Command to step up its surveillance in the state and come up with new strategies to tackle the wave of criminal activities in the state.

Speaking at the closing session of the four-day leadership retreat for the State Executive Council, Body of Permanent Secretaries as well as some heads of parastatals, the governor further urged the Police to improve on its mode of operations to ensure the safety of lives and properties in the state.

The governor, who spoke shortly after the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, addressed participants at the retreat, also pledged the support of the state government towards effective policing of the state.

While noting that the resources ploughed into securing the state must reflect in the reduction of criminal activities, the governor added, “We are not yet where we want to be; we have only 33, 000 policemen in Lagos for a population of over 20million. Again, we don’t have control over these police officers.

“We need to let the Commissioner of police leave this retreat believing that the Police need to own their own business just the way we have told ourselves that we want to own the business of governance. We need to see some things change. There has to be some form of paradigm shift; we want to see our police officers patrol in convoy between 12 midnight and 4am.

“That is why we on our own part, we have gone out of our budget limits, using our resources from the Security Trust Fund, to say that, yes, it might not be within our budget, but we would spend money to support the police, because if the state is safe, the economy will thrive.”

The governor also charged his team to take the lessons learnt from the retreat and make a commitment to implementing them in their various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) so as to better the lot of the people of the state.

On his part, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, who read the resolutions reached at the retreat, said the participants agreed that the police in conjunction with the state government will come up with a holistic and joint approach to tackle traffic robberies, cultism, street trading and menace of area boys in the state.

He said: “Participants agreed to proffer immediate, short and long term solutions towards unlocking traffic gridlock on major roads, highways and streets in Lagos. They also agreed on the need to deploy appropriate cutting edge technologies to improve revenue generation.”

Ambode urged to build storage facilities

The Lagos State Butchers Association has urged Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to build storage facilities in markets for members to keep their meat.

Its Chairman, Alhaji Bamidele Kazeem, who spoke in Lagos at the weekend, said this is necessary to promote hygiene and ensure the meat eaten by Lagosians is safe.

He said they needed more air-conditioned vehicles to carry meat from abattoirs to markets.

Kazeem hailed the governor for appointing Oluwatoyin Suarau as the Commissioner for Agriculture and Cooperatives and Gbolahan Lawal for Housing, saying the second coming of Lawal as a commissioner was a reward for the job he did in the Ministry of Agriculture.

Kazeem hailed the Supreme Court judgment, which validated Ambode’s election.
