    I’m sane, says Ambode

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has said he is “healthy and of sound mind”.

A statement by the Director, Media and Communications, Akinwunmi Ambode Campaign Organisation, Steve Ayorinde, said: “It has come to the attention of the Akinwunmi Ambode Campaign Organisation the wicked, baseless and cowardly lies being circulated about our candidate.

“The jittery opposition will stop at nothing in its smear campaign having failed to contain the soaring popularity of the APC candidate. But we are neither bothered nor discouraged; and we know that our numerous supporters can see through the lies and desperations.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Mr. Ambode neither suffers from any ailment nor has he ever met or been treated by a certain Dr. Lanre Adeoye. This fictional tale should be disregarded in its entirety.

“With a clear focus, sound mind and in good health, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode shall be unwavering in his campaigns and strategic consultations to retain Lagos State for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Fashola is working, Lagos is moving and Ambode is ready. No weapon of the opposition can stand against this obvious choice of the people.”

  • Lagos students endorse Ambode

Students of higher institutions in Lagos State under the aegis of Students’ Support Group (SSG) have declared their support for All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate  Akinwunmi Ambode.

The students urged residents  to vote for the governoship candidate in the Aprill 11 election. The leader of the group Mr Ahmed Agbabiaka (fondly called common Sense Revolution),  said the APC standard bearer possessed the skills and experience to move the state to the next level.

Agbabiaka said it was impossible for the APC to lose the election considering the performance of the current governor, who he said had the support of the masses through his populist programmes.

Agbabiaka, who was a member of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), said Ambode’s 27 years of experience in civil service placed him ahead of his main opponent, Mr Jimi Agbaje. He urged Lagosians to vote for experience, adding that the state is too sophisticated to be administered by anyone with no idea of governance.

He said: “It is visible to the blind that the most popular candidate in Lagos who has practicable programmes is Ambode. We don’t want a neophyte to come and put Lagos into a laboratory for experiment. Ambode has a clear-cut agenda and we want continuity of Governor Babatunde Fashola’s programmes. We cannot trust the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because what he is after is to experiment. Ambode is a scholar and has had cognate experience in administration.

“He has served in all areas of governance in Lagos, from the local government to the state public service. So, we believe Ambode is well-equipped for the task ahead. The only thing Jimi Agbaje can claim to have is his past governoship ambition in 2007.”

Ahmed said the group has membership, comprising of students who are 18 years and above in secondary and tertiary institutions across the state.

A member, Jeremiah Olatinwo of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) was confident of victory for Ambode at the polls, noting that students and youths in Lagos were ready to entrust their wellbeing in Ambode for four years.

“After a strategic meeting of Ndigbo in Lagos, we have resolved to vote for the APC. Our interest in the state has been protected and we equally want to show appreciation by voting for the APC candidates.

“I call on all our brothers and sisters to use their vote wisely, by this pronouncement we have endorsed General Muhammadu Buhari and Akinwunmi Ambode.

“I equally urge Igbo to go about the business without fomenting trouble. Our new task is to look forward to the new dates given by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and participate.”

The accord was signed at the Electoral Security Roundtable sponsored by the United States Embassy on Victoria Island, Lagos.

The peace deal was at the instance of the US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, who said there was need for politicians to douse the tension in the country by maintaining peace and engaging in issue-based campaign.

The candidates also pledged, on behalf of their supporters, to promote peaceand commitment to the judicial process.

At the ceremony were the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Archbishop Alfred Martins, National Missioner of Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Imam Abdulrahaman Ahmad, Senior Pastor, House on the Rock, Pastor Paul Adefarasin and National Missioner of Fatil-ul-Qareeb Islamic Society, Sheikh Abdurrahaman Adangba.

    Encomiums as Coliseum hosts Ambode

The Lagos State gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. AkinwunmiAmbode, was on Sunday, was hosted to a Grand House Reception (GHR) by The Niteshift Coliseum, Nigeria’s apex club.

Ambode who was ushered into the club at about 7:30pm with a spectacular display of fireworks became the 77th person to join the exclusive list of leaders in the politics, business, sports and entertainment who have been honoured with the GHR, which started in 1992.

Welcoming the candidate, the chief host of the event and Guvnor of the Coliseum, Ken CalebsOlumese said he was delighted to host Ambode, just like he had hosted former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and incumbent governor, BabatundeRajiFashola.

“In fact, Fashola is the only person to have been hosted twice to a Grand House Reception,” Olumese said.

After a citation of Ambode was read, the APC gubernatorial candidate marshalled out plans he hopes to execute as the next governor of Lagos State. Ambode said it was not ‘accidental’ that he was the 77th person to be honoured with the Grand House Reception. According to him, the addition of seven and seven equals 14, which signifies his aspiration to become the 14th governor of Lagos State.

Harping on moves to develop the state, Ambode disclosed project THESE, which stands for Tourism, Hospitality, Entertainment and Arts, and Sports all representing Excellence to the audience, packed with politicians, captains of industry, journalists, as well as entertainers.

According to him, a robust mix of “public-private partnership is what is needed to move the state forward.”

Thereafter, Ambode was taken to the hot seat where for about an hour, he addressed questions posed by Lagosian.

Among questions he addressed was the contentious issue of citizenship rights in Lagos, given the cosmopolitan outlook of the city-state.

“I won’t discriminate against non-indigenes and indigenes of Lagos,” he said. “We want to create a cleaner Lagos, a secure Lagos for everyone alike. It’s about making everyone to be part of the story of Lagos.”

Also reacting to questions about complaints of consumer protection, Ambode said structures are in place to protect the consumers. He said his administration would also promote sports at the community level, taking advantage of the youthful population resident in the state.

The event which was supported by the Mainland Business League, was spiced with music supplied by The Coliseum Shifters Dance Band.

Guests at the event include Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, Princess Akintoye Braimoh, Senator Olorunnibe Mamora, Ehi Braimoh, Former Vice Chancellor Lagos State University, Chief Kunle Ogunade, Olorogun Sunny Kuku, Ayo Sonaiya, Alariwo of Africa, Tony Okoroji and ace broadcaster Taiwo Obileye.

It will be recalled that penultimate Sunday, Jimi Agbaje, the Lagos gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambode’s major contender, for the post of governor, was similarly hosted by The Coliseum.

Personalities that have so far been hosted to the GHR include President Goodluck Jonathan, late businessman and politician Chief M. K. O. Abiola,, EreluAbiolaDosunmu, former Inspector General of Police Sir Mike Okiro, the late Afrobeat king FelaAnikulapo-Kuti, Rev Chris Okotie, co-ordinating minister of the economy Dr Mrs NgoziOkonjo-Iweala, former Ghanaian president Jerry Rawlings, former Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles ClemenceWesterhof, and Brig. Benjamin Adekunle (Retd.) among others.

  • ‘Ambode is right choice for Lagos’

‘Ambode is right choice for Lagos’

All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Hon. Bolaji Ayinla has urged Lagosians to vote for experienced politicians at the polls. He said there is no room for trial and error candidate. He said the party deliberately chose Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, an experienced administrator, as its governorship candidate.

Ayinla, a member of Lagos State House of Assembly, is contesting for the House of Representatives in Mushin II Constituency. He said what is needed in Lagos is continuity. Ayinla said the foundation was laid by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu 15 years ago, adding that Governor Babatunde Fashola has built on it.

The flag bearer said, if elected, Ambode will not only consolidate  on the legacy, but he will also move Lagos to the next level.

He said that Lagos will remain a model state under Ambode.

Ayinla described Ambode as a seasoned civil servant and a professional, who has what it takes to govern the state. “There is no doubt the APC will win, not only in Lagos State, but nationwide,” he said.

Ayinla added: “There is no room for trial and error in Lagos. We can’t entrust the governance of the state in the hands of an inexperienced candidate that will take us back. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) can’t make any difference in 2015 with Jimi Agbaje as its governorship candidate.

“Agbaje was one of us. He should have waited for his turn and be groomed for the job. But, his inordinate ambition has taken him to two or three parties within eight years. Agbaje is not in the right party. He should retrace his steps and return to the progressive fold where he belongs.”

On his mission in the House of Representatives, Ayinla said his experience from the campaign field has shown that the immediate needs of his constituents are employment for the youths, security of life and property and provision of basic infrastructure, including stable power supply, good roads and potable water.

He promised to attract federal presence to his constituency, if elected. Ayinla therefore, urged people to reject President Goodluck Jonathan and vote for Gen. Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential election.

He advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that all eligible voters collect their voter’s cards so that they can exercise their franchise during the elections. “INEC is improving on the distribution of voter’s card. If they keep the tempo, we shall get there,” he added.

  • Ambode promises more projects

    Ambode promises more projects

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Akinwumni Ambode, has promised to implement people-oriented projects, if voted into office.

He made this promise at a rally in Lagos yesterday organised by Southsouth, Arewa and Ndigbo indigenes in the state.

The APC candidate promised to provide an enabling environment for non-indigenes to do their businesses, adding that his administration would not discriminate against them.

“I want to build a Lagos where people can realise their aspirations. My vision for Lagos is leadership and accountability, good governance and quality service.

“I will build an educational trust fund to cater for the unemployed youth; I will finance artisans to establish cottage businesses.

“There would be a revitalisation of vocational skill and education so people with vocational education don’t end up as roadside vulcanisers and welders.”

  • ‘Stop destroying Ambode’s billboards’

    ‘Stop destroying Ambode’s billboards’

A group, Support Group for Ambode 2015, has condemned the destruction of billboards belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, by operatives of the Federal Task Force.

A statement by its spokesman, Kehinde Bamigbetan, described the Federal Task Force as a “gross exploitation of the unemployed by an insensitive and anti-people-led Federal Government, seeking to set the poor against one another”.

“It is sad that the same government that controls power at the centre is approaching the electoral contest in Lagos State with reckless impunity and irresponsibility.

“For instance, two weeks ago, the Task Force pasted notices on outdoor advertisement on the Third Mainland Bridge and other roads built by the Federal Government in Lagos State, purporting to direct their owners to remove them.

“It followed up this illegal threat at the weekend by destroying the billboards and other outdoor adverts.

We hereby call on the PDP and its candidate, Jimi Agbaje, to call on the Federal Task Force to abide by the rule of law and respect the authority of the local governments of Lagos and their agency, the Lagos State Signage and Advertising Agency (LASAA) to carry out the regulation and control of outdoor advertisements and hoarding.

“This is the only way Agbaje can convince the electorate that he truly subscribes to decency, respect for authority and non-violence in canvassing his options in the forthcoming elections.”
