THE governoship candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, has rolled out what he called, “a 24/7 economic agenda” that will transform Lagos to a mega city model.

Unveiling his plans to reporters, Ambode promised to set up a Lagos Employment Trust Fund (LETF) with N25 billion over the next four years, adding that this will enhance access to finance of a minimum of N1billion yearly across the five divisions in the state.

He said: “That will allow our youths and unemployed people have access to adequate finance for entrepreneurial ventures. We will protect the growth of our small and medium scale enterprises by providing tax incentives. We will implement government policies that will encourage the private sector to employ more citizens and foster economic development.”

To boost internally generated revenue (IGR) in the state, Ambode said the government will improve the collection mechanism through e-governance.

He also plans to pursue a fully integrated transport management system that combines roads, rail, water and walkways to ease the movement of residents in the city centres and the suburbs.

“We will introduce and establish officially designated bus stops/routes in Lagos. We will improve on traffic with the construction of new roads and maintenance of existing ones, as well as placing directional signs in strategic places. We will also increase the use of our waterways through channeling and dredging,” he said.

With the risingdemand for housing in the state, Ambode promised to create communities that are self-sustainable across the state. He also said his administration will improve on the current policy of home ownership through Lagos HOMS and provide ownership options, such as Rent to Own Programme (ROP).

“This will allow for easy access and reduce congestion at the city centres. We will provide affordable housing schemes by collaborating, through Public Private Partnerships (PPP), to increase the available housing stock. “Our government will also improve on the current policy of home ownership through Lagos HOMS and provide ownership options, such as Rent to Own Program (ROP),” he said

In the area of security, Ambode plans to increase funding to  security in order to sustain the success recorded by the present administration.

He said: “We will boost the State Security Fund to scale up the successes recorded so far. We will continue with the city lighting project by expanding the Independent Power Project (IPP) to enhance the security of lives and property across the state. In addition, our government will embark on the acquisition of the latest advanced security communications technology that will track and monitor the daily activities of the state.”

Ambode also promised to encourage collaboration between the private sector and the government such that the partnership will help government identity areas of growth.

“We will encourage the creation of a Corporate Social Responsibility Trust Fund (CSR-TF) by the private sector, to be managed by a Board of Trustees charged with the responsibility of identifying growth opportunities yearly and financing such opportunities to further boost economic development across sectors and communities in the state,” he promised.

Top on his agenda too education. Ambode plans to provide free education up to the senior secondary school level to ensure that no child is denied the right to education. He also plans to provide one meal per day to students to guarantee a healthy learning environment.

He prmised to seek collaboration with the private sector to ensure the sustainability of the state bursary and scholarship initiatives for tertiary institutions, capacity development for the informal sector as well as skill acquisition through technical and vocational training for residents of the state.

“We will encourage the private sector to partner with government in this regard as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility. We will also deepen skills,” he said.

He also said health sector will not be left unattended to since health is wealth.

To make this happen, he promised to introduce free medical care for children from birth to age six and pregnant women on both pre-natal and ante-natal care.

He said: “Our senior citizens will also enjoy free healthcare from 65 years onwards. We will improve on the quality of Primary Healthcare system and make it more accessible, thereby reducing the overdependence on our general hospitals. We will activate emergency services in all our hospitals.”

On agriculture, he said his government will build on  current administration’s efforts by opening up the  untapped aquatic and seafood resources in the state.

“We will provide incentives for agricultural processing companies, thereby providing employment for our bulging youth population,” he added.

While the current administration has changed the face of tourism, culture and sports, Ambode promised to increase the avenues to showcase the  distinct and diverse culture of the state through the establishment of museums and heritage centers. He added that water parks for children and youths will be created in the state by utilising prominent natural resource in the state.

“To make our state a tourism destination in Africa, we will also develop our waterfront by providing recreational facilities and encourage investors to invest more in tourism infrastructure.

“Our unique cultural heritage will be promoted and enhanced to attract tourists globally. This will also create a secondary market for job creation. We will create community sport centers to encourage our youth development,” he said.

He also unveiled plans tolift the arts and entertainment sector (Nollywood) by providing grants to filsm producers in the movie and music industries to encourage growth in the sectors.

To acheive this, Ambode promised to revive the Lagos Film Office and encourage investors to build theatres, cinemas and art galleries across the state.

“We will partner with the entertainment industry to develop sustainable structures and frameworks to support interested and upcoming youths,” he promised.

Why we must be grateful, by Ambode

LAGOS STATE Action Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Mr. Akinwumi Ambode has urged Muslims to pray for the peace, progress and continued unity of the country.

Ambode said the commemoration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad, which is today, should be an occasion for remembering Nigeria in prayers, ahead of next month’s election.

In a statement by his Director of Media and Communications, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, the former Accountant General of Lagos State said: “The Prophet’s special day, coming just after the momentous occasion of the New Year celebration, is an opportunity for every Muslim brother and sister, and indeed all Nigerians, to rededicate themselves to the virtues of charity, selflessness, fairness and good neighbourliness that holy Prophet Muhammad represents.

“As we successfully welcomed the New Year and are preparing for violence-free and credible elections, the occasion of Eid-el-Maulud calls for good wishes, belief and commitment to the safety, security and survival of our country and every citizen.”

Yesterday, he spent time at three charity homes in Lagos with his running mate and secretary in the State Government (SSG) Dr Oluranti Idiat Adebule.

Ambode visited and donated gifts to the SOS Children’s Village in Isolo; the Hearts of Gold Children’s Hospice in Surulere and the Modupe Cole Memorial in Akoka.

He said he decided to start the New Year with the visit because “they(less-privileged) remind us of why we need to be grateful to our Creator at all times and are the reason why no one should ever be tired of giving.”

In his New Year message to the people of Lagos State, Ambode said: “Fellow Lagosians, I join you in your prayers for yourselves and your loved ones for this New Year and beyond. I believe that we have said thank you to God for bringing us to this New Year and we have prayed for success, good health, peace and divine guidance.

“I have also prayed to God, and I trust that all our collective prayers and our great hopes for Lagos shall continue to be fulfilled. Our belief in a greater, better Lagos shall never be dashed and 2015 shall for us be a year of hope renewed. Together we shall keep the faith always.”

Christians under the aegis of the All Christian Leaders/Ministers Forum (ACLMF) have begun mobilising for the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and the party’s governorship candidate in Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode.

The National President of ACLMF, Dr. Sam Ogedengbe, who spoke yesterday at the group’s end-of-the-year youth summit/symposium, held at the Overcomers Prayer Assembly, Abule-Egba, Lagos, said Christians should vote for Gen. Buhari because he is honest and disciplined, adding that his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, is a devout Christian, who would complement Buhari’s effort.

He said Lagosians should vote for APC’s governorship candidate, Ambode, to allow the continuity of Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola’s laudable programmes.

Ogedengbe went on: “2015 general election is crucial in the history of our nation. We should avoid voting for politicians, who don’t have the interest of the masses at heart. There is need for a change at the national level. Nigerians should support the Buhari/Osinbajo candidature to put this country on the path of progress.

“We are mobilising Christians and other Nigerians to vote for Gen. Buhari because we need him at this crucial time to right the wrongs. People should vote for APC because it has a solution to the nation’s problems.

“Christians should no longer sit on the fence. We should vote during the general elections. It is only through our votes that we can effect a change. As we go for crossover service tomorrow (today), we should remember Nigeria in our prayers because this is our Jerusalem.”

He urged the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) , Prof. Attahiru, Jega, to conduct free and fair elections.

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, visited yesterday the Gbagada General Hospital, where he was received by the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Idowu Adekunle Dada.

Ambode said he visited the hospital to “show solidarity” with the workers in the spirit of the season and give gifts to the patients.

“The hospital is close to my campaign office so I am visiting my neighbours,” he said.

The APC candidate said the Babatunde Fashola-led administration had done well in upgrading hospitals in the state and stated his desire to continue with this trend, if elected.

He shared his interest in improving the quality of health services in the hospital and in Lagos generally, saying “If God gives me the grace, I will continue in the tradition of upgrading our hospitals in Lagos. It is a must for us to have a first-class health service delivery in this state of ours”.

He praised the selflessness and commitment with which health workers discharge their duties even in a hostile environment.

He promised such selfless and committed service to Lagos as governor.

Dr. Dauda thanked Ambode for the visit, stating that this was the first time a governorship candidate visited the hospital. He said the hospital management is “ready to work with and work for him” to ensure the continuity of good governance in the state.

Fashola meets APC gov aspirants, urges support for Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, SAN, yesterday hosted a meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirants, who contested the governorship primaries of the party in the state, commending their conduct during the primaries. He urged them to rally round the party’s flag bearer, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, for the campaigns ahead.

Those in attendance at the meeting included Ambode; his running mate and Secretary to the State Government, Dr (Mrs) Oluranti Adebule; Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr Obafemi Hamzat; former Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr Tola Kasali; Senator representing Lagos West, Senator Ganiyu Solomon; former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Supo Shasore, SAN, Mrs Adetokunbo Tobun-Agbesanwa, Mr Abayomi Sutton and Mr Lanre Ope.

The governor, who spoke at the Lagos House, Ikeja, added that there was a need to build the team for the governorship candidate, suggesting that even if meant offering the people who helped in their various campaigns, they should all rally round the party’s flag bearer.

“The candidate has to get on the road from yesterday. And nothing would be more enabling and more intimidating for the opposition than to see all the aspirants together with the winner”, he said.

Fashola noted that it was a matter of managing time, stressing that once or twice, the aspirants should find the time so that they can give the flag bearer the needed push to go forward with the campaigns.

He congratulated the candidates for making Lagos proud with the way they conducted themselves during the Lagos APC primaries, adding that it served as a push for the bigger convention of the APC at the national level which turned out to be a success.

He stressed that many of the presidential candidates borrowed a leaf from the way the Lagos aspirants conducted themselves, adding that he is yet to learn from any state where there were as many as 13 contestants in a delegates election in the current dispensation where there was no bickering.

Governor Fashola said all of them embodied the spirit of excellence, adding that this informed his delight at their conduct during the primaries.

Also speaking, the Lagos State chapter of the APC, Chief Henry Ajomale thanked the aspirants for the spirit of sportsmanship that they displayed during and after the primaries.

He said since the process has now been concluded, what is left is for everyone to rally round Ambode to ensure the success of the party at the 2015 gvernorship polls.

  • Lagos SSG is Ambode’s running mate

The All Progressives Congress on Wednesday chose the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Mrs. Oluranti Adebule, as running mate to its governorship candidate in the state, Akinwunmi Ambode.

Ambode secured the party’s governorship ticket after defeating 12 other aspirants at a primary election held on December 4.

  • As Buhari, Ambode and Ugwuanyi emerge

The political environment is on a tailspin, with the cries of the politically robbed and the jubiliation by the successful gladiators. Of course there are those who suffer political hallucinations and delusions about their political worth, and as such, try to pass off mere political mirage as arrested political tsunamis. Among the political wayfarers and the wailing, it is difficult to distinguish the genuinely robbed, from the robbers who were beaten in their game.

So, I propose to the weather beaten victims and failed aspirants, particularly those who abandoned their constituencies while the party lasted, a new law to establish a chartered institute of political arbitrators and mediators, to help arbitrate and mediate the rambunctious fractures arising from their rejection at the primaries. While the law makers work out the details of such an act, or law, to show their frustration, let us look at some of the celebrants, who are already gearing up, for the February show down.

    Alhaji Muhammadu Buhari

Retired General Muhammadu Buhari, austere politician and veteran presidential contestant, and the candidate of the alternative national behemoth, the All Progressive Congress (APC), will square with President Goodluck Jonathan, as the main contenders for the 2015 presidential election. Fortunately for him, his co-contestants at the APC primary have accepted defeat with equanimity, and so will hopefully support him during the campaign and general election. But still he has the challenge of time and resources to prosecute the money guzzling presidential campaign.

He will also have to contend with selling his vice presidential candidate, as the best, from among the very influential contenders, within his party. Hopefully the choice he has made will bring value towards a successful campaign. There is also the combustible issue of religion and tribe. Even more serious will be how to handle his several enemies, from among the top corrupt national elite, who know that a Buhari presidency could ruin their contrived life of opulence, luxury and corrupt enrichment, at the expense of the hoi polloi. But despite the challenges, Buhari will give President Jonathan a good fight.

    Mr. Akin Ambode

The emergence of Mr. Ambode, an urbane retired civil servant, is substantially similar to that of Governor Babatunde Fashola in 2007, and Lagosians are hopeful that if he wins in 2015, he would perform excellently well, just like the incumbent. Ambode’s emergence as the gubernatorial candidate of the APC started off as a rumour, before the royal endorsement of the Oba of Lagos. Now, against the permutations of his co-contestants, he resoundingly won the contentious party primary.

His major challenge now should be how to assuage the ill-fillings of the other contestants, who had high opinion about their political clout, but had languorously lost out at the keenly contested primary. As has been argued by other concerned commentators who have genuine sympathy for the success of the party at the general polls, there is the need to heal the fractious ruling party, before the elections in 2015. There is also the need to assure non-indigines that Lagos remains the center of excellence for all its inhabitants, regardless of religion or tribe.

    Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi

As expected, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Gburugburu) the preferred candidate of the incumbent Governor of Enugu state, Barrister Sullivan Chime, emerged as the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), though with some serious hiccups. Against the tradition of Ebeano political family, the deputy senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, successfully extracted a favourable compromise from the Governor. That is a good development, in the interest of enduring democratic culture. As I have stringently argued on this column, the closure of the political space against any form of opposition does not do anybody any good, not even the immediate beneficiaries of the existing status quo.

Considering that Enugu state is substantailly a PDP state, it may be safe to conclude that Gburugburu will be coronated at the general elections, next year. Well that is if the state Ebeano family are able to put their fractious house in order. Towards that, I urge Hon. Ugwuanyi to reach out to his senior brother and colleague, Senator Ayogu Eze, in the overall interest of their senatorial zone, primed to produce the next governor of the state. Gburugburu must give it to Ayogu, he distiguished himself creditably well as a Senator, and with executive and legislative experience, would have made a fantastic Governor, if he was the choosen candidate.

There is also the issue raised in a discussion I had with a friend and colleague, who argued in favour of our state producing a female senator, for the first time. Pushing his argument, he said that Enugu state is a laggard, when it comes to empowering women with high political office, and urged for suport for what many call, the tumultous emergence of Mrs Ifeoma Nwobodo (Ifeoma di niru), as the candidate of a faction of the PDP, to represent Enugu East senatorial zone. But that will wait for the final resolution of the party or the court, over the authentic candidate from among the three contenders laying claim to the same position. Furthering that argument, the alternative would be for Gburugburu to nominate a female, as his deputy.

As we await the final showdown next February, it is my wish that Buhari will gain enough support, to pose a serious challenge to President Goodluck Jonathan, at the polls. To achieve that, he must come up with a dream team. As we count down to that election, which may make or mar our fractious nation, it is my earnest prayer that the campaign will be issue driven, with the candidates telling our troubled nation, how he can solve our numerous nation-state threatening challenges.

  • Other parties should emulate APC, says Ambode

Other parties should emulate APC, says Ambode

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Lagos State Akinwunmi Ambode has urged other parties to learn internal democracy from the APC.

He said the rancour-free, open and transparent manner in which the House of Assembly, National Assembly and governorship primaries were conducted make APC worthy of emulation.

The candidate spoke when he visited the APC chairman, Chief Henry Ajomale, at the party secretariat on Acme Road, Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos.

Ambode said it was to the Ajomale-led exco’s credit that winners were chosen according to delegates’ wishes.

“Unlike elsewhere where parallel elections are being held by different factions; where aspirants are forced to wear bullet-proof vests and casualties being recorded, the APC primary elections under your watch recorded no violence.

“Not a single aspirant has threatened to leave the party on account of the conduct of the primaries. Instead, they are congratulating winners with a promise to ensure victory for the party next year,” Ambode said.

The governorship candidate said the APC has demonstrated strength, popularity and acceptability as the people’s preferred choice.

“We have done this through the huge number of delegates who voted at our primary election last Thursday. Our competitor could only muster a fraction of our delegates, even at that, their figures could barely add up.

“In line with its progressive orientation, our party has shown to the world its sterling qualities; that ours is a unified, non-acrimonious, and accountable party.

“We have also shown that internal democracy can thrive and be well communicated to the nation. This is what your leadership has achieved. This is what has been clearly communicated and which is being applauded even by critics,” he said.

Ambode said APC’s feat was not only commendable; it was a message to other states and to every Nigerian that “democracy has found a solid root in our great party.”

He added: “It is a clear message that not only can other parties learn from us, but that the APC deserves to retain our dear state Lagos and take over the federal structure in 2015.

“No one can be in doubt any longer that as our members converge on Lagos for our national convention, the same spirit of openness, fairness and camaraderie will prevail in choosing our presidential candidate.

“I am a product of a Lagos that is an epitome of progressive development, good governance and democratic ethos.

“I am a product of a remarkable process made possible by the party leadership and the good people of Lagos, for which I am eternally grateful.

“My promise at all times, therefore, is to submit to the leadership and direction that our party provides and to continue with the spirit of excellence that the two successive administrations have laid down.”
