Ex governorship aspirants enjoined to support Ambode

Aspirants who lost the Lagos State governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to Akinwunmi Ambode in last week’s primaries have been enjoined to close ranks and support him as the party’s standard-bearer in the forthcoming election.

A public affairs analyst and entrepreneur, Mr. Adeniyi Adekunle, made this appeal at an event in Lagos while commenting on the significance of next year’s general election. He urged the close to a dozen other aspirants that lost to Ambode to give him their full support to enable the party to face the election as a formidable and united platform.

Adekunle described Ambode’s opponents during the contest as gallant men who have distinguished themselves in the nation’s public life, especially in Lagos State. He said: “In every contest, there must be losers and winners; that is inevitable. Now that Ambode has emerged as the winner, I want to appeal to his opponents to put whatever transpired behind them and work with the flag bearer to ensure victory for the party at the polls.”

Adekunle, who is also the Chief Executive Officer, Samad Group of Companies, said his appeal was borne out of a desire to see the APC triumph in next year’s election and consolidate on the good works of the incumbent administration led by Governor Babatunde Fashola.

He added: “I’m apolitical. I’m not a politician, but we are all political animals. As a political analyst who has been monitoring events in Lagos in the last 16 years, I’m of the view that the state benefitted immensely from the vision and dynamism of both former Governor Bola Tinubu and the incumbent Governor Fashola. I’ve known Ambode as a hardworking and brilliant technocrat over the years. With his wealth of experience, I’m sure that Lagos State will be better for it, if he is endorsed by the electorates.

The public affairs analyst and entrepreneur said Ambode has started well by extending hands of fellowship to all the aspirants who participated in the contest. His words: “Ambode has done well by saying that his victory is for all of them and that there is no victor and no vanquished at the end of the day. That is a hallmark of a good leader.”

    Vote Ambode, Fashola urges Lagosians

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has urged residents to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode, to sustain the programmes of his administration.

Before the APC primary election, the governor said he would support whoever emerged the candidate.

Speaking at the Lagos Sea Food Festival 2014 at the Bar Beach, Victoria Island, Fashola said supporting Ambode and the APC would  ensure that the state continued to enjoy good governance and high performance.

Noting that this year’s edition of the festival would be his last as governor, he said: “I urge you all to support the new APC governorship candidate; support him, support the party and make sure that the festival continues”.

He told the crowd of fishermen and women as well as other stakeholders at the event that “if you want this to continue, you have a role to play; you have to register and you have to collect your Permanent Voter Cards and then you can use your vote to choose what you want”.

“So, if you want this Sea Food Festival to be here next year, if you want Count Down to be here next year, if you want Beach Soccer to be here next year, the only way you can get them is to vote the government which is providing these activities in Lagos. So, if you want to keep them, you must do your part. Vote APC.

“I hope that you will all do what is necessary to sustain these activities.”

Also speaking at the 10 Degree Events Centre, Oregun, venue of the fifth edition of the Youth Stakeholders’ Forum organised by the State’s IGNITE Enterprise Partnership Project in conjunction with the After School Graduate Development Centre (AGDC), Fashola said the people must do the right thing to sustain the government’s programmes.

“This intervention and several others that have uplifted the lives of unemployed youths have been made possible with taxpayers’ money.

“So if you want continuation, you know what steps to take during the next election,” the governor said.

Ambode has reiterated his intention to open up Lagos for a more conducive business environment and investment opportunities.

He spoke at a thanksgiving service at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Glover Road, Ikoyi, Lagos and later at a Meet-the-People reception in Epe.

“We have a legacy to build upon, and it is our collective responsibility to build on the progress that Lagos has witnessed in the last 15 years,”he said.

According to the former State Accountant-General, the last 15 years had witnessed an irreversible growth and development “of our great state with a foundation laid by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu between 1999 and 2007”.

“The consolidation and actualisation of that growth, of which we are all living testimonies, have been achieved by Governor Fashola.”

The candidate added that it was important to reiterate that the foundation laid by the two  administrations must never be destroyed but built upon.

“I wish to restate my promise, therefore, that I commit to the continuation of excellence and the progress of all Lagosians.”

Ambode said his core message stood on the acronym LAGOS, which, he explained, meant Leadership, Accountability, Good Governance, Opportunities and Service.

“My mission and vision, therefore, is to create a clean, secure and prosperous Lagos State that is driven by a vibrant economy and supported by quality service, equity and justice; a Lagos where no one is left behind and where no one is discriminated against on account of age, religion, creed or origin.

“In building on the legacies of the last 15 years, it is important to expand the frontiers of doing business in this state that has the potential to be one of the top five economies in Africa.

“Lagos deserves nothing less and this shall continue to be part of my message to every Lagosian as we begin to solicit their votes.”

The candidate said his sterling experience in public service over 27 years would be a priceless asset to his administration, if elected governor in 2015.

The President of the All Christian Leaders/Ministers Forum (ACLMF), Dr. Sam Ogedengbe, has congratulated Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode for emerging victorious at the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries in Lagos State.

In a statement yesterday by his Media Consultant, Elder Cornelius Olopade, Dr. Ogedengbe said the victory showed that God had answered the prayers of Lagosians.

He also congratulated the leadership of the APC in the state and at the national level for organising rancour-free, peaceful, fair and flawless primaries.

Ogedengbe said the emergence of Ambode showed that he was the most supported and God‘s chosen aspirant among the lot, adding that everybody should back him so that he would emerge victorious at the poll to enable Lagosians  continue enjoying the dividends of democracy.

Victorious Ambode extends olive branch to fellow contestants

Winner of the governorship ticket of the All Progresssives Congress (APC) in Lagos State,  Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has extended a hand of fellowship to other contestants, urging them to team up with him to win the poll.

In his acceptance speech after the election, the former Accountant-General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance thanked party members and Lagosians for the confidence reposed in his ability, promising never to let them down.

His election by 3,735 of the 5,959 accredited delegates at the peaceful primary election at Onikan Stadium, Lagos yesterday had sparked jubilation among party members.

The election was conducted by the Planning Committee headed by the former deputy governor of Edo State, Pastor John Obadan.

Basking in the euphoria of a successful outing, Obadan said: Ambode, having scored the highest number of votes cast, is hereby declared winner.”

It was celebration galore at the venue as Obadan declared Ambode winner of the primaries.

Trailing him were the Lagos State Commissioner for Works, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, who polled 1,201 votes; Senator Ganiyu Solomon (272 votes); the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Yemi Ikuforiji (272) and former Commissioner for Health, Dr. Leke Pitan (112).

However, shortly after the shadow poll, other aspirants converged on Protea Hotel, Ikeja for the review of the exercise. However, they could not agree on any collective assessment, making them to shelve the press conference proposed for noon.

At the meeting were Ikuforiji, Hamzat, Pitan, Dr. Tola Kasali, Mrs. Tokunbo Agbesanwa, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab and Mr. Adekunle Disu. Former lawmaker, Hon. Lanre Ope, was not at the meeting.

At the primaries, Disu scored nine votes while Wahab got seven. A total 5, 815. 5, 724 votes were valid while 91 were invalid.

Ambode hailed the shadow poll, saying that it had validated the belief of the APC in democracy. He said the delegates voted according to their conscience in an atmosphere of transparency, adding that that transparency is a signpost for a better future for democracy.

Urging stakeholders to put aside the disappointment of the past and face the opportunity of today, he said the APC must win next year’s election for the benefit of Lagosians.

Ambode added: “Lagos deserves the best in terms of good governance and development. We have a legacy to build on.

Before announcing the result, Obadan noted that the process was free, fair and credible, stressing that it underscored the commitment of party members to democracy.

The former deputy governor said: “We are highly impressed with the level of progressive political awareness of the people of Lagos. What we saw at the party secretariat was the cooperation of the entire leadership of our party to ensure that we have smooth, transparent primaries.

“We have been transparent and fair to all. Aspirants have demonstrated a high level of maturity and understanding.”

However, Obadan said the APC has room for ventilation of grievances, urging aspirants who are not satisfied with the primaries to exploit the internal opportunity for redress.

He said: “In this contest, a winner emerged. If any aspirant is not satisfied with the way the exercise was carried out, he can go to the Appeal Committee, which is sitting in Lagos.”

It’s victory for Lagosians and democracy

My fellow Lagosians, it is with a deep sense of gratitude and humility that I accept this ticket to run as the flag bearer of our great party, APC in the 2015 gubernatorial elections. This victory was made possible by you, the people. And to my fellow contestants, I have nothing but commendation and respect for putting up a good fight. The success of this primary and the victory that has come out of it is not just for me but for all of us that stepped into the water. It is a victory for Lagosians and for democracy.

I thank all the delegates, over 6,000 of you who voted according to your conscience. For once, you did not waver in your faith in the process put in place by our great party, APC. To the State party Executive and the national officers, I extend my appreciation for the long hours and the experience invested in this exercise. The orderliness, the transparency of the process and the spirit of sportsmanship devoid of bitterness that characterised this process signpost a better future for our democracy.

Our party has demonstrated to all that we are a party of great minds and democratic ideals. The flag of the party that you have handed over to me I accept with a deep sense of history, knowing fully well that Lagos deserves nothing but the best in terms of good governance and dynamic development. We have a legacy to build upon. We have a challenge to meet, and speedily too. The responsibility belongs to all of us.  Let us put aside the disappointment of yesterday and embrace the opportunity of today, not forgetting that the future begins today.  We must never forget that the future of Lagos is bigger than the summation of our ambitions.

After this victory, we must move quickly to retain the party APC in the column of the progressives by returning the APC to power in Lagos. The task ahead is daunting, but surmountable. We have only just commenced the first phase of the execution of our political agenda. The next phase beckons. We must all work together to usher APC back into power in Lagos State.

On my part, I promise never to waiver or fail. I promise to energise and mobilise our teeming supporters in the next phase of this struggle. I put myself to the task, knowing fully well that the foundation laid must never be destroyed but built upon.  I commit to the continuation of excellence and the uplifment of the lives of all Lagosians.

I thank you, and God bless Lagos State.

Ambode, who will fly the APC flag in next February governorship poll in the state, said in a brief acceptance speech that his victory at the primaries was for the people of the state and democracy.

He praised the 12 other aspirants for putting up a good fight.

In the speech titled: “A Renewed Hope” the governorship candidate urged the contestants to put the outcome of the exercise aside and work for the progress of the party and the state as a whole.

Tambuwal, Ambode, Yari, Umana get APC’s tickets

All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidates  emerged yesterday, across the country, signalling the final countdown to February’s general election.

The party’s presidential candidates will emerge next week in Lagos to climax the pre-general election activities.

The party will pick its House of Representatives and Senate candidates this week.

House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal picked the Sokoto State ticket. Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode took a commanding lead in Lagos —as of 1.a.m. Mr. Umana Okon Umana won in Akwa Ibom, Olorogun O’tega Emehor is the Delta State candidate.

Total delegates accredited 3,569, total votes cast 3,513 and total valid votes 3,501.

The chairman of the four-man Electoral Panel, Bolaji Khalil, said 10 votes were invalid.

Tambuwal, who attributed his victory to Allah, praised Governor Aliyu Wamakko for his resilience in providing the right kind of leadership.

“ I, therefore, wish to thank delegates and the good people of Sokoto State with the hope that you will extend your support to the party to ensure we form a responsive government that will transform the state,” he said.

After a rowdy scene, a former secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government, Umana Okon Umana, was declared the winner at the Uyo Township Stadium.

Umana, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) last week, scored 2,444 of the 2,453 valid votes.

His opponent, Senator James Akpanudoedehe, scored only six votes.

The shadow poll kicked off in Lagos  around 1.30 pm, following the accreditation of about  6,000 delegates from the pre-existing 20 local governments.

As from 9 am, the aspirants stormed the venue. They include the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, Hon. Lanre Ope, former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Mr. Olasupo Sashore (SAN), Senator Ganiyu Solomon and former Health Commissioner Wahab Tokunbo.

Others are: Mr. Tayo Ayinde, Mr. Adekunle Disu, former Accountant-General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and Mrs. Tobun Agbesanwa, the only woman in the race.

At 1 pm, the gate of the venue was locked. Ambode entered the stadium, shortly before the closure of the gate. The chartered  accountant went around the high table to greet party leaders and co-aspirants. He cracked jokes with Senator Solomon before sitting next to the House of Representatives member, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

Voting started at 20.25 pm. Delegates from Epe Local Government Area were the first to cast  their votes, shortly after the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Pastor Peter Obadan, a former deputy governor of Edo State, highlighted the voting procedure.

Obadan directed that delegates should put their badges on before voting. He also asked the local government chairmen to identify the delegates to prevent impostors from participating.

Obadan assured aspirants and delegates of a fair exercise, saying that “counting will be done in the open and the result will be announced”.

Governor Babatunde Fashola  was absent. However, his deputy Mrs. Adejoke Orelope- Adefulire, Secretary to Government Dr. Oluranti Adebule and some commissioners witnessed the poll.

  • Southwest governorship primaries

    Southwest governorship primaries

Coronation in Oyo, Ogun; epic battle in Lagos

Group Politics Editor, Emmanuel Oladesu, takes a look at the aspirants and the issues that would determine the result of the APC gubernatorial primaries

AS next year’s elections gather momentum, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has a major challenge in the Southwest, which is perceived as one of its strongholds. This is the challenge of managing the governorship primaries that will produce its flag bearers in three states; Oyo, Ogun and Lagos, where governorship elections will hold. According to observers, the major concern is how to prevent post-primary crisis, which has always been the albatross of the progressive bloc at periodic elections.

As the three states go through the rigour of the selection process, the remaining three chapters-Ekiti, Osun and Ondo-will devote attention to parliamentary elections. Two years ago, the progressive family lost the Ondo governorship poll. Few months ago, it also lost Ekiti to the PDP. But, it survived in Osun, where its candidate, Governor Rauf Aregbesola, was re-elected.

    Ogun:

The shadow poll in Ogun State will be a walk over for Governor Ibikunle Amosun, who is seeking re-election. He has no rival at the primaries. He is a lone ranger in the race. Perhaps, the chapter is taping from the tradition of conceding the nomination to an incumbent, in recognition of his constitutional right to a second term and his achievements in the first term.

Two weeks ago, the governor rounded off his “popularity tour” of the local governments. He was endorsed for second term across the three districts. In fact, one of his aides, Soyombo Opeyemi, said Amosun is prepared for 2015. “The governor has lived up to expectation as attested to by his achievements across the sectors. Many people want him to continue beyond 2015,” he added.

Amosun controls the party machinery at ward, local government and state levels. He is also loved by national party leaders, who believe that he has done the APC proud, owing to his feats across the sectors. A native of Owu, Amosun has been endorsed by Egba monarchs and community leaders for a second term. In Egbado and Ijebu/Remo areas, his works, especially the urban renewal programmes and successful infrastructural battles, speak for him.

However, after securing re-nomination, the governor will have to gird his loins. The ruling party is polarised in Ogun. His deputy, Prince Segun Adesegun, and three senators-Alhaji Gbenga kaka (Ogun East), Segun Obadara (Ogun Central) and Akin Odunsi (Ogun West)-are up in arms against him. The three senators who have defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) have the backing of the APC leader, former Governor Olusegun Osoba. Some members of the House of Assembly have also deserted the governor. Therefore, while Amosun will not be opposed at the primaries, which will pale into a mere coronation for him, he will have to gird his loins as he prepares for the general election.

    Oyo:

In Oyo State, the governorship race is no more a matter of conjecture. Unlike Amosun, his Ogun State counterpart, Governor Biola Ajimobi has a rival at the primaries. But, the aspirant, Adebayo Shittu, a lawyer, former lawmaker and Commissioner for Justice, is not perceived as a formidable challenger. His support base, according to watchers, is thin. His structure is also weak. Besides, Shittu lacks a formidable financial muscle. Many party stalwarts have described him as a loyal  paper weight politician. A source said he entered the race, following the sentiment against the governor in some quarters that he has not done well. Reflecting on this perception, a zonal officer of the party, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said: “Bayo Shittu is like a spoiler in the race. I tell you that he will not get up to 10 votes at the primaries.” However, Shittu, in a chat with reporters in Lagos, said that “Oyo APC needs a fresh blood to win.” He explained that, despite the control of “party power” by the governor, many indigenes have an axe to grind with him over his alleged politics of exclusion.

Ajimobi has been endorsed by individuals, groups and associations. APC chieftain and former deputy governor, Iyiola Oyedokun, who noted that the governor has the right to seek re-nomination, said “he has tried his best.” He alluded to the urban renewal programme, which has given Ibadan, the state capital, a face lift, and the construction and rehabilitation of roads. “Every government has its own focus. Anybody that goes into government must have a focus. Ajimobi has focused on some areas,” he added.

Ajimobi will emerge as the flag bearer because he wields enormous influence in the chapter. But, the political family is under stress. This has implications for the general election. Few months ago, Senators Olufemi Lanlehin and Ayo Adeseun left the ruling party. Lanlehin is joining forces with former Governor Rashidi Ladoja’s Accord Party (AP). Adeseun is teaming up with the PDP. Therefore, while it will be easy for the governor to get the ticket, he has a major battle to fight at the general election.

    Lagos:

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola will bow out from office next year after completing his two terms of eight years. The succession battle is gaining momentum in the economic hub and commercial capital of Nigeria. It has provoked interest beyond parties and the political class. Even, other states are monitoring unfolding events. APC governorship aspirants are intensifying their consultations and mobilisation.

In this electioneering period, events in the ruling party will influence the decisions by the PDP. No doubt, the struggle for the ticket may become fierce, warranting strategic defections by impatient politicians seeking the golden fleece outside their political family.

There is no shortage of competent politicians and technocrats to take over from Fashola in the APC. Observers contend that the aspirants parade intimidating credentials. No fewer than 16 chieftains are vying for the governorship. The aspirants  include Senator Ganiyu Solomon, House of Representatives member, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, House of Assembly Speaker Hon. Yemi Ikuforiji, and former Accountant-General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode.

Others are Commissioner for Works Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, former Health Commissioner Dr. Leke Pitan, and businessmen Alobo Bakare and Adekunle Disu. Others are former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Supo Shasore (SAN) and Mr. Tayo Ayinde. Many of them are disciples and beneficiaries of Tinubu’s political philanthropy.

Last month, two aspirants-Senator Gbenga Ashafa and Transport Commissioner Kayode Opeifa-left the crowded race. Ashafa said he would re-contest for the Senate in the Lagos East. Opeifa, son of the Asiwaju of Awori, explained that he was not favoured by zoning. His political base is Agege, Lagos West.  Former Environment Commissioner, Dr. Muiz Banire, may have also quietly left the race without an explanation.

Many issues will shape the shadow poll. The first is the incumbency factor. In 2007, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the former governor, was in charge. Today, Fashola is the governor, although he is not in control of the political machinery. As the party prepares for the primaries, party faithful expect the two leaders to work hand in hand, and with the active support of critical stakeholders, to midwife a worthy successor.

To an extent, indigeneship may be a factor. When the Olowo-Eko of Lagos said that “we will not allow the son of the Ewekoro monarch to rule us in Lagos,” the message was internalised by party chieftains and prospective delegates. Yet, in another dimension, some have argued that the 1999 Constitutions guarantees a level-playing field for contestants.

According to the APC leadership, zoning is a factor. In fact, the party has earlier announced that it has zoned the slot to Lagos East Senatorial District. However, aspirants not initially favoured by the zoning have traced their ancestral roots to the district. For example, Solomon has claimed that his illustrious father and strongman of Mushin, Lagos West politics, the late Chief R.B. Solomon, left Ipakodo, Ikorodu Division, for Mushin in 1949. Hamzat has claimed that he is a descendants of Ajiborisa family of Epe. Shasire has also said that he has deep seated historical links with the East. Therefore, zoning , may have paled into a weak factor.

However, despite the clamour by Christians for a “Christian governor,” religion will be a weak factor. There are Christians and Muslims in the race. Reflecting on the inexplicable factor, Shasore said that it is a non-issue, adding that stakeholders should avoid the danger of erecting religious platforms for politicking in a polity still battling with the ethnic divide. Another chieftain, Hon. Lateef Raji, a House of Representatives aspirant in Osodi/Isolo Constituency, said: “It is a non-issue. Christians and Muslims in Lagos State have co-existed harmoniously without friction. We have had more Muslims governors than Christian governors, but it is mere coincidence. In the Southwest, religion has never shaped our politics.

Echoing him, APC chieftain, Alhaji Kola Oseni, warned against setting a dangerous precedence. “In my family, among the children of my mothers, we have Muslims and Christians. Merit should be the watchword, not religion,” he said.

The lessons of Lagos politics are also instructive. But, aspirants often refuse to learn from history. Historically, it is difficult to predict who will emerge the flag bearer. Lagos State is dynamic. The political field is slippery. Therefore, the contest is always unpredictable. The first aspirant on the track may never become the winner. The history of governorship contest is replete with the emergence of aspirants who were never in reckoning before. These emergency aspirants have always breast the tape and smiled away with the crown. Instructively, eyes were not on Tinubu in 1998/99 and Fashola in 2007. But, they were thrown up by some circumstances and they won the governorship polls.

In 1999, Tinubu was warming up for the Senate, until the Afenifere leaders of Ijebu origin advised him to signify interest in the governorship. The only dissenting voice was Dawodu, who, had favoured Funso Williams for the seat. Had Dawodu, fondly referred to as the god of Lagos, signified his intention to run, he would have emerged as the candidate. Dawodu never totally forgave his Awoist friends; Senator Abraham Adesanya, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Chief Olaniwu Ajayi. The AD flag bearer, Tinubu, defeated the PDP candidate, Sarumi. He spent eight years in office.

In 2007, the defunct Action Congress (AC) had 14 aspirants. They included Jimi Agbaje, Abiodun Ogunleye, Solomon, Oyinlomo Danmole, Tola Kasali, Tokunbo Afikuyomi, and Femi Pedro. Others are Tunde Fanimokun, Bayo Ajisebutu, Kaoli Olusanya, Omotilewa Aro-Lambo, Remi Adikwu-Bakare, and Fashola, the dark horse.  At the primaries, the former Chief of Staff secured the ticket.

Ahead of the selection process, the party seems to be polarised by two options-primaries and consensus. Times are changing. Miffed by the culture of imposition, some forces are pressing vigorously for internal democracy. Ironically, the beneficiaries of imposition are turning around to discredit the process that threw them up as party candidates, elected representatives and political appointees. A member of the House of Assembly, Bisi Yusuf, chided those crying foul over imaginary imposition. He said imposition has different meanings to different politicians and at different times. “When it favoured them, they embraced it. When they know that it will not favour them, they are crying foul.”

Last week, the aspirants attended a crucial meeting in Ikeja to brainstorm on consensus candidacy. A source said that it was deadlock.

The advocates of guided primaries are also being challenged. This is a major challenge. But, the reality may stare the party in the face during the primaries. When the Lagos APC opted for direct primaries at its inaugural ward congress, it was chaotic in some councils. Party leaders immediately retraced their steps. In subsequent local government and state congress, consensus was adopted and there was peace.

Perhaps, the strongest factor is mutual agreement among party leaders. A chieftain, Alhaji isiaka Adekunle-Ibrahim, said this approach is possible. He said: “The doctrine of mutual consent by the controlling leadership is very important. Ambition is important, but the collective interest of our party will be defended by our wise elders. I look forward to a brainstorming session involving Tinubu, Fashola, Ajomale and his executive committee, party elders, and members of the Gubernatorial Advisory Council and other leaders in the G 15. These eminent leaders will vet the aspirants, moderate the selection process and ensure that the right candidate emerges”.

Adekunle Ibrahim added: “The party has said that there is going to be primaries. But, the respective chapters also reserve the right of screening. The APC is strong and every effort will be made to make it stronger. Ahead of the primaries and general elections, reconciliation and crisis resolution mechanisms should also be strengthened. Our leaders-Asiwaju Tinubu, Governor Fashola, Pa Hamzat, Alebiosun, Murphy Adetoro, Rabiu Oluwa, Ajomale, Basorun, Seriki Bamu, Prince Ogunleye, Prince Oluyole Olusi, and others-will not let us down.”

    Adoption:

APC contest in Lagos has witnessed intense competition because some interested parties with longstanding gubernatorial ambition had preferred the option of adoption rather than resort to open primaries as is now the case. So, the refusal of the party elders to use adoption is believed to have left some disgruntled. However, in a matter of days, the party will throw up the preferred candidate of the party members in the primaries.

    Aspirants:

    Solomon:

The first aspirant to have declared his interest is Solomon. Although his base is Mushin, he is a household name in Lagos. The political scientist is son of the eminent politician, the late Chief R.B. Solomon, a Second Republic leader of the UPN and an ally of Jakande. From 1998 to date, Solomon has been relevant. Apart from serving as the Chairman of Mushin Local Government Area, he is also a former member of the House of Representatives. Solomon is very popular. He is a crowd puller in Mushin and Lagos West. Pitan:

The successful medical doctor from Agbowa, Epe Division, is perceived as the candidate of the Mandate Group. In post-Fashola era, the group wants to bounce back as an influential power bloc in the Centre of Excellence. He served as Commissioner for Health and Education for eight years in Tinubu Administration. In recent times, he has set up a medical mission. Any where he goes, he is accompanied by health workers who screen people for ailments. Many believe that he is fit to rule the state. Few weeks ago, his supporters started the agitation for primaries. He is intelligent and hardworking.

    Ikuforiji

Ikuforiji is from Epe. He is a loyal politician. He became a member of the House of Assembly in 2003. He was re-elected in 2007 and 2011. He is the longest serving Speaker of the House. The Speaker enjoys the support of legislators as the head of the legislative arm. Under his leadership, the House has been stable. He has had the privilege of representing two constituencies-Epe and Ikeja, which are in two separate districts in the House of Assembly.

He was the first Permanent Secretary to have done so in the history of Lagos Civil Service. When the Federal Government withheld allocations to Lagos councils, he designed the blueprint for the financial survival of the councils. His colleagues in the civil service describe him as a man of character, capability and competence.

Ambode is calm and calculating. His partisan moves in recent times suggest that he is learning at the feet of experienced political gladiators. No fewer than 60 traditional rulers from the five divisions of Epe, Ikorodu, Ikeja, Badagry and Lagos witnessed his declaration ceremony at Onikan Stadium, Onikan. The crowd was huge, brooms filled the air. Also present were Christian and Muslim clerics, wives of the Oba of Lagos, Lagos white cap chiefs, top party leaders, members of the National Assembly, party officers from ward, local government and state levels. At the ceremony, he was endorsed by ‘Conference 57’, which comprise of former local government chairmen. But, Fashola emerged as the candidate. He later served as Commissioner for Special Duties. He is not a threat to any aspirant. For him, it is not a do-or-die affair.

    Shasore:

Shasore is a legal luminary and a member of the Body of Benchers. He was succeeded as the Justice Commissioner by Ade Ipaye in 2011. Shasore is a close friend of Fashola. Ambode, a former  Accountant-General and Permanent Secretary, spoke at his campaign office at a meeting with members of Lagos Deserves More Campaign Group, an independent group backing him.

The aspirant told the group’s leader, Bode Ojelabi, that he had designed programmes on human capital development.

Ambode said if he emerged the party’s candidate and won the election, he would transform the state’s infrastructure development and urban renewal projects, especially at the grassroots.

He said his administration would focus on job creation, food security, affordable health care, integrated transport network, affordable housing schemes and free basic education, among others.

“The APC administrations have been rated high in each of these areas. If given the opportunity, our team will definitely start on a good note given the records of Governor Babatunde Fashola and his predecessor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

”We have developed people-centric programmes of action. We have, also, worked out strategies to ensure their effective implementation. But we need your support at all levels to make good our plans. We need the support of all Lagos residents to make our promises.”
