    2019: Group endorses Ambode

A group, of the southsouth People United Forum, Kosofe chapter, Lagos State, has promised to support Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for a second term.

The President of the group, Mr. Dennis Joseph, said the governor had surpassed the expectation of Lagosians. He said the forum would mobilise members in Lagos to ensure the governor wins next year’s election.

He said: “Ambode is a strategic developmental governor whose strategic planning, construction and implementation of budget have lifted the Centre of Excellence. These are physical things you can see. The roads construction going in all parts of Lagos are just too numerous to mention.

“Lagos is the centre of attraction not only to Nigeria but where people from different parts of the world come to want to live. The destruction of lives and property have drastically reduced.

“He has done very well and the Southsouth is proud of him. We have endorsed him and we will mobilise our people resident in Lagos to vote for him. We don’t have any other candidate except Ambode because we want him to continue the good work.”

Joseph said the Southsouth was paramount to the development of the Nigeria, noting that its support for the leader would enhance his success at the poll.

“The Southsouth is the engine room of the nation because we produce the oil that the country depends to survive. Nigeria cannot succeed with the region because it depends on oil from there. So, Nigeria cannot ignore the hands that feed it.

“We are proud that God has made the Southsouth the life wire of the nation. We are peace loving people and sincere in what we do.  Those who are dealing with us sincerely are getting our support. Whatever we do, we are open people.”

Joseph said the Southsouth youths are law abiding citizen, stressing they could only take law into their hands when the leaders disappointed them.

“That will happen due to insincerity on the part of leadership. But as long as the people are taken into confidence and are kept abreast of what is happening in the country things will go the proper way,” he said.

Ambode’s aide advises youths on drugs

The Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Christian Religion, Rev. David Kolawole Verrals, has urged youths to abstain from hard drugs

Verrals, who spoke at the weekend in a lecture organised by the Youth Wing of Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN), in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, said it was unfortunate that youths used drugs to destroy their lives.

He said that was why Lagos YOWICAN organiseda lecture, tagged: ‘Menace of Drugs Among Youths’, to discourage them from hard drugs.

Verrals said: “The youth wing of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN)in Lagos State, at our last council meeting, discussed ways to assist youths in contributing to nation building. We observed that youths are not mentally prepared for activities that can make their voice to be heard on national issues. We observed that socio-economic problems have allowed their condition to deteriorate; engaging in cultism, robbery, drug abuse, militancy, kidnapping and others.

“This appraisal of activities of youths and the need for their contributions to nation building led to the initiative to organise a lecture to advocate a solution to the menace of drug abuse among them.”

CAN’s Secretary in Lagos State Elder Israel Akinadewo, who delivered a keynote address, said the environment and peer influence shaped youth behaviour.

He said parents should serve as role models to their children, to discourage them from drug abuse.

Akinadewo enjoined the government to tackle unemployment among youths

He said if they were employed, they would not engage in drug abuse, “because an idle hand is the devil’s workshop.”

Chairman of the event Dr. Dele Ajayi and the Vice Chairman of YOWICAN in Lagos, Apostle Mike Akinluade, said youths should imbibe virtues.

Primary and secondary school pupils attended the lecture.

  • Ambode’s cultural leap

    Ambode’s cultural leap

By signing into law on February 8 a legislation known as the Yoruba Language Preservation and Promotion Law, Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode demonstrated exemplary cultural consciousness and cultural conviction. The beauty of this new law is that it puts indigenous language on the front burner.

By this move, the Ambode administration has shown that it is in tune with current international thinking on indigenous languages. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) observes: “Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage. All moves to promote the dissemination of mother tongues will serve not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to develop fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.”

The Lagos State House of Assembly had passed the bill in October 2017, after a process that involved input by stakeholders. The law is therefore a product of agreement between the legislative and executive arms of government on what should be done to preserve and promote Yoruba language, which is the main language in the state. It is believed that “in present-day Nigeria there are over 40 million Yoruba primary and secondary language speakers as well as several other millions of speakers outside Nigeria.”

It was a notable coincidence that the law arrived when an influential populariser of Yoruba culture was preparing to depart. It is noteworthy that Prof. Akinwunmi Isola who died on February 17, aged 78, participated in the process that resulted in the language policy.

In a paper by Isola at the Yoruba Summit organised by the Lagos State House of Assembly in June 2016, he shared his thoughts on the subject, ‘Making the Teaching of Yoruba Compulsory in Public and Private Schools in Lagos State.’ Isola, who was represented by Professor Duro Adeleke of the University of Ibadan, had argued:  “We should speak Yoruba in our institutions. Yoruba is one of the languages recommended to be taught in our schools to promote unity and it occupies a prominent position among languages in the world. If you lose your language, you will lose your culture. The language of a people has to do with their culture, dresses, hairstyle and some other things.”

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi noted in a tribute:  “Prof. Isola was an unabashed believer in the promotion of the Yoruba language, which he once demonstrated by being the first person to deliver a university convocation lecture in Yoruba at the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, which was very unconventional.”

Another striking coincidence: The Yoruba Language Preservation and Promotion Law arrived in the same month that the world celebrated   International Mother Language Day 2018 on February 21. This special day has been observed “every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.” The theme this year was “Linguistic diversity and multilingualism count for sustainable development.”

Commissioner for Information and Strategy Kehinde Bamigbetan shed light on the law, saying Yoruba language “has become mandatory for all candidates seeking admission into our tertiary institutions.”  According to a report, “He said anyone seeking admission into the Lagos State University, Lagos State Polytechnic, Michael Otedola College of Primary Education, Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Lagos State School of Nursing and Lagos State College of Health Technology, among others must have credit in Yoruba language.”  The law makes it compulsory for all primary and secondary schools – private or public – in the state to teach Yoruba Language as a core subject at all levels.

Furthermore, the law stipulates that “all state-owned tertiary institutions are to incorporate the use of Yoruba Language in their General Studies (GNS) courses.”  Other highlights: The language will be an acceptable means of communication in business and government, and all laws will be translated into Yoruba language.

There is no doubt that there will be problems to be solved as the law takes effect. It is important to focus on the advantages. UNESCO notes: “To foster sustainable development, learners must have access to education in their mother tongue and in other languages. It is through the mastery of the first language or mother tongue that the basic skills of reading, writing and numeracy are acquired. Local languages, especially minority and indigenous, transmit cultures, values and traditional knowledge, thus play an important role in promoting sustainable futures.”

The UN specialised agency is expected to know what it is talking about. UNESCO’s position supports the Yoruba Language Law. The organisation says:  “Languages, with their complex implications for identity, communication, social integration, education and development, are of strategic importance for people and planet. Yet, due to globalisation processes, they are increasingly under threat, or disappearing altogether. When languages fade, so does the world’s rich tapestry of cultural diversity. Opportunities, traditions, memory, unique modes of thinking and expression — valuable resources for ensuring a better future — are also lost.”

The organisation also states: “At least 43% of the estimated 6000 languages spoken in the world are endangered. Only a few hundred languages have genuinely been given a place in education systems and the public domain, and less than a hundred are used in the digital world.”

It takes a thinking political administrator to grasp the cultural dimension of the pursuit of socio-economic development. By paying attention to the preservation and promotion of Yoruba language, Ambode has shown a holistic approach to governance.

Cultural governance is usually overlooked by leaders, which is why Ambode’s critical cultural interventions in less than three years at the helm deserve to be properly situated.  It takes a culture-friendly mind to think culturally. Ambode’s cultural focus shows that his understanding of “needs in the society” is not narrow and simplistic.

Now that Lagos has shown the way, despite its pronounced cultural diversity, it is expected that other states in the country’s southwest where Yoruba is the main language will emulate the language policy. It is clear that the Yoruba have a duty to preserve and promote their language.

Indeed, every indigenous language deserves to be preserved and promoted. The question is: Where are the preservers and promoters?

  • Afenifere Renewal Group backs Ambode on Yoruba language law

    •Yoruba Professionals hail Lagos governor

The Lagos State pan-Yoruba organisation, Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG), has hailed Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for signing the Yoruba Language Preservation and Promotion Law of 2018.

The ARG said the law was another first in the country as it would arrest the decline of Yoruba usage among youths.

In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Ayanleye Yinka, ARG described the governor’s move as “heartening” for the Yoruba race in Nigeria and the Diaspora.

It said: “This epoch-making law with the active participation of the Speaker and members of the House of Assembly was a bold step in preserving our language, its usage that is fast becoming unpopular among younger generations, which should be the natural propagators, are even embarrassed to speak the language, thereby making it to inadvertently die a slow death and on its way to extinction.

“With this novel law and many of his laudable interventions in the affairs of the Southwest, Governor Ambode has demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is a man of courage and foresight.”

The group hailed the state for demonstrating its role as “a pacesetter in advancing and strengthening the course of true democracy in a federation with diverse cultures and languages”.

It added: “The Lagos State chapter of ARG and its leadership, led by Victor Ayotunde Bankole Osunloye, have been reassured by the governor’s uncommon leadership, valour and commitment that the goals and objectives of the Southwest, which has been laid by our late sage (Chief Obafemi Awolowo), would come to fruition before long.”

It urged other Southwest states to emulate Ambode’s “audacity of leadership”.

Also, Yoruba professionals, the Southwest Think-Tank (SWETT), has hailed Governor Ambode for signing the law.

Ambode, on February 8, signed the bill into law, making it possible for Lagos residents to promote and propagate the Yoruba language.

The law has also paved the way for students to be admitted into any state-owned tertiary institutions with a credit pass in Yoruba language.

SWETT described the move as timely and rewarding for the Yoruba nation.

In a statement yesterday in Lagos by its Secretary, Dr. Femi Adeogun, SWETT said: “By this singular effort, Governor Ambode   has displayed an uncommon trait of an Omoluabi, setting the pace for other governors to emulate.

“Since his assumption to the exalted position as governor of Lagos State, Mr. Ambode has never hidden his passion for the development of the Yoruba race, an attribute that has garnered for him more respect and honour among the Yoruba, particularly promoters of Yoruba culture and tradition…”

    Ambode approves N30,000 for interns

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has approved the payment of N30,000 as monthly stipends to Ready.Set.Work (RSW) interns.

Special Adviser to the governor on Education, Mr Obafela Bank-Olemoh said this in a statement yesterday.

The RSW is an entrepreneurship and employability initiative of the Lagos State Government for tertiary institution students in the state.

It is aimed at equipping graduating students with work ethics to enable them excel in their chosen careers.

Bank-Olemoh said the governor also approved N8 million in seed funding for the top five winners of the RSW Business Pitch Competition, whose businesses would be placed in incubation.

He said the beneficiaries would commence their internships and incubation respectively on March 1.

The interns, he said, are part of the 2,000 final year students from six tertiary institutions in the state who took part in the 2017 edition of the 13-week intensive Entrepreneurship and Employability training programme.

Bank-Olemoh said the programme, which held its pilot in 2016 with 500 final year students from three tertiary institutions in Lagos State, was scaled up in 2017 to 12,000 students from six institutions.

The institutions include Lagos State University, University of Lagos, Lagos State Polytechnic, and Lagos State College of Health Technology.

Others are Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, and Michael Otedola College of Primary Education.

Lagos APC reps endorse Ambode for second term

Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the House of Representatives from Lagos State yesterday endorsed Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for second term.

The endorsement, according to him, was based on the massive infrastructural development and giant strides in all sectors and sections of the State.

They presented a letter to Ambode at Lagos House in Alausa, urging him to seek reelection in 2019.

Led by Majority Leader Femi Gbajabiamila, the APC Caucus said the decision to unanimously endorse the governor for second term was as a result of his brilliance performance in the last two and half years.

Speaking to Government House correspondents after a closed-door meeting with Ambode, Gbajabiamila said the lawmakers were indeed proud to associate with the achievements of the governor so far and would be supporting him all the way for another term in office.

The House Leader, who described the endorsement as history repeating itself as the Caucus was the first to endorse the governor for election in 2015, said it was instructive that there was not a single dissenting voice in the decision to support Ambode for re-election.

“This is a very unique occasion because we have said all we need to say behind closed doors but they are worth repeating.

“Ordinarily, some of us have been in this business for long time and when you have endorsements, there are always dissenting voices maybe one or two but among every single member, there was not one dissenting voice and I think that is very important.

“So, we are here today as stakeholders across all the Local Governments and federal constituencies of the State to present a very unique letter to our governor seeking for him to run again in 2019.

“We will give him unflinching support and have him re-elected overwhelmingly as governor in 2019,” Gbajabiamila said.

He urged the governor to see the endorsement as a call to do more for the people of the State come 2019.

Ambode thanked the federal legislators for the honour done to him, saying that the endorsement would spur him to do more for the people.

“I am greatly humbled to receive the APC Caucus in the House of Representatives from Lagos State. I am more delighted that this word of encouragement by way of this letter is to inspire me further to continue to render service to the good people of Lagos.

“I want to thank you so much for the honour you have done me. I receive it with all humility and I pray that God gives us the grace to actually honour all the letters and the words in this message,” the governor said.

“Because of the giant strides of our amiable Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode in the last two and a half years in governing the State; because of the things he has done across board, across all the Local Government Areas, across different sectors, we sat together and we decided without a dissenting voice to seek his audience and endorse him for re-election in 2019 as the Governor of Lagos State,” he said.

  • Ambode donates N365m mobile clinic for cancer diagnosis, treatment

Ambode donates N365m mobile clinic for cancer diagnosis, treatment

LAGOS State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday donated a mobile cancer centre for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer-related diseases.

It is the first in Africa.

The centre, according to the governor, will also help in increasing advocacy to prevent spread of the disease.

Ambode, who spoke at the Lagos House in Ikeja, the capital, while handing over the facility to representatives of the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), said his administration was committed to the fight against cancer.

The governor said the mobile clinic, which cost the government $1 million (about N365 million), was a confirmation of the commitment of his administration to improve the healthcare system.

He said it would give hope to residents who may not have the wherewithal to go for diagnosis and treatment.

Ambode said: “I want to thank the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP). Sometime in June 2016, they did ask me to support issues that relate to cancer, but we decided that we are going to procure this Mobile Cancer Centre.

“What we have that we are donating today to this committee is a mobile clinic that deals with advocacy and treatment of cancer patients because we do not have the financial resources to have cancer centres in all locations in Lagos.

“We decided to go for this mobile cancer centre. It’s costing us N365 million, approximately $1 million. What this does is that we can reach out to every community and every cancer patient. We can give hope back to those who are hopeless.

“On a day like this, we extend the commitment of the state government to the people of Lagos to improve on our health system and help those who never imagined that there would be hope for them because they have been afflicted with cancer and any other aliment that relates to cancer.”

Congratulating the CECP for its campaign against cancer, Ambode said the facility would deal with the cancer scourge.
The governor noted that the long-term plan of his administration is to have e-mobile centres across the state to aid early detection, diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

He added: “I have done this and it is the first in Africa, if not in the world, because it encompasses all other diagnostics about cancer. That’s why we are very proud to be associated with this project. We can also say that, ultimately, we should have e-mobile cancer centres placed all around Lagos. But we just feel by this gesture we would reach out to everyone who has been left behind in the community.

“The operations of this particular unit would be supported by us and then we would support the daily running to ensure that it is on the road everyday, looking for cancer patients to bring them back to life.

“You can imagine the amount we have spent. It is just to bring hope to the hopeless and bring back to those who really need it.”

Health Commissioner Dr. Jide Idris said in a period where communicable diseases, such as cancer, were becoming epidemic, the donation of the mobile cancer centre was a direct response by the administration to provide a stop-gap.

Also, Executive Secretary of CECP, Dr. Abia Nzelu said: “We are indeed grateful for the generosity you have shown and the love and passion you have shown towards the good people of Lagos State, particularly with regards to this cancer menace. We are particularly that this is happening on a very special Day. Today is known as Valentine’s Day; a day set aside to celebrate love and indeed, you have shown that to the good people of Lagos in particular and indeed to Nigerians in general,” Nzelu said.

She said the Mobile Cancer Centre, the first in the world and fitted with digital equipment, would tackle communicable and non-communicable diseases with specific focus on cancer.
