Ambode donates mobile clinic for cancer diagnosis, treatment

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Wednesday donated a Mobile Cancer Centre for diagnosis and treatment of cancer-related diseases.

The Centre, according to the governor, will also help in increasing advocacy to prevent spread of the killer disease.

Ambode, who spoke while handing over the facility to the representatives of the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP), a non-governmental organisation, said he was passionately committed to the fight against cancer.

He said the Mobile Clinic, which cost the government $1million (N365million) was a confirmation of his administration’s commitment to the improvement of the healthcare system.

He said: “I want to thank the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP). Sometime in June 2016, they did ask me to support issues that relate to cancer, but we decided that we are going to procure this Mobile Cancer Centre.

“What we are donating today to this Committee is a Mobile Clinic that deals with issues that relate to advocacy and treatment of cancer patients because we do not have the financial resources to have Cancer centres placed in all locations in Lagos. Therefore, we decided to go for this Mobile Cancer Centre. It is costing us N365million approximately $1million. What this does is that we can reach out to every community and every cancer patient and we can give hope back to those who are hopeless.

“On a day like this, we extend the commitment of the state government to the people of Lagos to improve on our health system and also help those that never imagined that there would be hope for them because they have been afflicted with cancer and any other aliment that relates to cancer.”

Badagry obas: Ambode praised over elevation

The member representing Badagry 11 State Constituency at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Setonji David has described the elevation of three Baales to the status of Oba in Ajara, Badagry Central as unprecedented in the history of Badagry traditional institution. He also said the action has redressed 50 years of injustice in the communities.

David, who was reacting to the elevation of the three obas in a chat with reporters in his office at the Assembly Complex penultimate Thursday, pointed out that the three obas are from his constituency.

The lawmaker said the struggle to elevate the traditional rulers has been on for over 50 years, adding that he is overjoyed because “this is happening in my time as their representative in the Assembly.”

The three traditional rulers who were elevated to the status of oba by the state government are Aholu Tha-zunnoh Toyon 1 of Ajara Vetho Kingdom, Aholu Whento 1 of Ajara Topa Kingdom and Aholu Agano Toniyon Jeyin 1 of Ajara Agamathen Kingdom.

David assured that the recognition by the Lagos State government was of great social significance to his people.

“The obas and other traditional rulers embody the fundamental values of the people; they are the custodians of the mores, customs, belief systems and values of the people. Consequently, the people look up to them for direction in virtually all matters that affect their society,” David said. He further stated that “such honour done to the rulers is honour done to all the people of the communities”.

While noting that the people of Ajara Vetho, especially, had appeared before various chieftaincy tribunals over their agitation for an oba dating back to the 1970s, David said the new titles would go a long way to further assure the people of government’s commitment to ensuring equity and justice for all.

“I am short of words to describe the fullness of joy I experienced when I heard the good news. My people were also jubilant by the development.

“On behalf of Ajara in particular and Badagry as a whole, our heartfelt appreciation goes to Governor Ambode and all who supported our aspiration through the long tortuous journey,” David said.

He enjoined the obas to live up to the expectation of the people, even as he said they should be role models to ensure the people look up to them always.

According to him, the whole of Ajara group did not have an oba before this development.

“Of all the administrative groups that make up Old Egun-Awori District Council, which includes Badagry, only Ajara was left behind in this regard; thus the elevation represents a major redress of chieftaincy matters in Ajara’s interest,” he said.

  • Ambode orders extension of Oshodi/Airport Road

THE Lagos State Government has extended   the scope of work on the 10-lane Oshodi-International Airport road  to Ladipo bus-stop on the Apapa/Oshodi expressway.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday said there would be no point expanding the road if it would not get to that point.

“There is no point reconstructing the Airport Road if it is not extended to this point, and the extension will also complement the ongoing project within the market,” Ambode told traders at the Ladipo spare parts market.

He was addressing the traders during a tour of some projects.

The  airport road is scheduled for completion later this year.

Ambode appealed to the traders to give way for contractors to rehabilitate and reconstruct roads within the market.

According to him, the traders selling on the road are delaying the contractor’s work, which may have effect on the project’s expected time of delivery in May.

“The only reason why this project will not be delivered is if you continue to obstruct the contractor. You need to talk to yourselves; I do not want any trading on this road until it is finished,” Ambode said.

The governor, who said he would bring development to the market, urged its leaders to appeal to the traders and cooperate with the contractor.

Ambode also inspected the  Oshodi transport terminals (OTT), roads on Ketu-Alapere axis and the Eko Arts Theatre beside the Opebi Link Bridge.

The OTT is expected to be delivered in August.

The Vice President, Ladipo Spare Parts Market, Mr Jude Nwankwo, assured Ambode of the traders’ cooperation.
