    •Governor inaugurates 13-block classrooms

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has renewed his administration’s commitment to upgrade infrastructure in public schools to meet global standards.

Ambode spoke yesterday while inaugurating a block of 13 classrooms built by his administration at Oke Ishagun community in Agbado – Oke Odo Local Council Development Area.

The governor said his administration pays particular attention to upgrading school infrastructure, especially at public primary/secondary levels, because it recognises the importance of basic education to higher intellectual development.

Ambode, who was represented by Deputy Governor Dr Idiat Adebule, noted that the “huge resources” committed to providing and upgrading school infrastructure “is consistent with the all-inclusive policy and conviction of his administration that children of today are future leaders who deserve the best education.”

“The basic education level is a crucial stage because it is the foundation upon which all other levels of education are built. It is our desire therefore to ensure that this level of education is strengthened to enhance the future prospects of our children and their ability to cope with the challenges of higher levels of education” Ambode said.

The governor assured that ongoing rehabilitation and construction projects in public schools would go round all the six educational districts in the state.

He said the state executive council had approved that the projects be extended to all public schools irrespective of their areas and location.

His government’s vision, Ambode added, is to “develop a robust public education system that can compare with the best in the world”

In Alimosho alone, the governor listed some of the state government projects to include: Abesan Senior Comprehensive College, Ifesowapo/Aboru Senior Secondary School, Millennium Senior School Ijegun, Egan High School, Egan, Abesan Junior High School, Abesan, Meiran Senior and Junior Model College, Meiran, State Junior High School, Alimosho, Olorunishola Community Junior School, Ayobo, among others.

Ambode urged pupils in the state to justify government’s huge investment in education by working harder and remaining focused.

He said: “To our pupils, the future belongs to you if you listen to your teachers and your parents, you can achieve anything you pay your mind to but you must work hard and pay attention to your studies, read your books , be focused  on achieving your dreams and develop yourself daily.”

Ambode to corporate bodies: support govt with CSR projects

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has urged corporate bodies in the state to come up with a robust Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects that would fast track developments at the grassroots.

Speaking at the Inaugural CSR Lagos Business Luncheon on Matching 2018 Corporate Social Responsibility Budgets to the Needs of Lagos State Communities, held in Victoria Island, Ambode said the government need to partner with the private sector in order to abridge the growing needs of her increasing population.

He said: “The challenge has increased over the years because of recession in the economy which has stretched the resources of the government to cater for the weak and the old which formed a large chunk of her vulnerable population,” adding that government’s call is to rise to the challenge of the grassroots, whose people had risen to the challenges of their environment by engaging in self-help projects.

Ambode, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Tunji Bello, said the state had now reached a time when non-state actors must play more role in supporting the self-help projects and programmes of the communities.

“The 24 million people who inhabit Lagos State today, including the corporate players must see Lagos as one big family where the rich help the poor and where each is his brother’s keeper,” he said.

The governor said he looked forward to serious partnership between the private sector and the government in the next 24 months in the areas of needs assessment of the communities which cut across drainage rehabilitations, roads, electricity, pipe borne water, among others.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Communities and Communications, Kehinde Bamigbetan said right from the onset, Governor Ambode had made it clear that he would embark on inclusive governance that would give power to the people at the grassroots for even development of communities.

He said this mission had manifested in the empowerment of the communities as community leaders were being carried along on projects awarded by the government in the various communities, adding that during the construction of the 114 roads, community leaders were allowed to play active part in the process.

Bamigbetan stated that apart of government’s efforts to reposition the grassroots, it had come to a point where CSR was greatly needed as government could not do all alone and needed the partnership of the private sector through CSR.

Speaking, Deputy Consulate-General, Peoples Republic of China, Guan Zhongpi, said the Chinese government had been partnering with Lagos in the area of CSR and that more attention would be given to the needs of the communities next year.

He said the Consulate had previously implemented more than 10 CSR projects in Lagos, such as donating equipment to schools, sinking of boreholes at the Lagos University, among others.

  • Nigeria must get post-secondary education right, say Ambode, Shettima, Dickson

Nigeria must get post-secondary education right, say Ambode, Shettima, Dickson

THREE governors, one senator, two professors and Confederation of African Football (CAF) chief yesterday identified post-primary school education as a critical step to guaranteeing a stable and prosperous future for Nigeria.

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode; Bornu State Governor Kashim Shettima and Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson said a well-developed secondary school education system would stem the tide of militancy, insurgency and instability threatening some parts of the country.

They spoke in Lagos on ‘Raising a wise generation: Revamping Nigeria’s secondary education’ at a colloquium organised by Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association (Class of September 73).

The event was chaired by Nigeria’s first female Vice-Chancellor Grace Alele Williams (former VC, University of Benin). Senator Oluremi Tinubu was special guest of honour.

Other guests and speakers included the Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ish-aq Oloyede; Chairman, Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) Amaju Pinnick, Prof. John Pepper Clark, his brother Ambassador B. A. Clark and Independent Chairperson of the Nigerian Women Football League (NWFL) Aisha Falode.

The event also featured a fundraiser for a proposed N500 million technology centre at the college to groom pupils on entrepreneurial skills.

Chief host and special guest of honour, Ambode, who was represented by Special Adviser on Education Obafela Bank-Olemoh, said secondary education is a critical stage in the education ladder “because it builds on the foundation laid at the primary level and also prepares students for the challenges of tertiary education”.

He lamented the decline in education standards from what obtain in pre and early post-independence years.

“The questions that come to mind on occasions such as this are: where and how did we get it wrong?

“What is clear, however, is that the level to which our secondary education and by extension the education sector generally has degenerated, did not happen in one day.

“It has been a progressive decline as a result of a combination of factors. The most talked about is inadequate funding,” Ambode said.

The governor noted that revamping secondary education to raise a wise generation will require paying attention to “physical infrastructure to guarantee a conducive learning environment, provision of modern learning materials and equipment, competent and well-motivated teachers; and a curriculum whose content must be capable of imparting the right skills relevant to the needs of the 21st century”.

The governor observed, however, that “funding alone will not guarantee the desired results if it is not complemented with strategic planning driven by creative and innovative ideas”.

He explained that the launch of “Code Lagos”, “which would ensure that a million Lagosians will learn how to code in three years”, was part of his government’s effort to boost the quality of education.

Shettima, who focused on girl-child education, lamented that the poor secondary education standard in the Northeast had multiple and wide ranging effects on the human development index.

Shettima noted that terror group Boko Haram understood the importance of modern education that was why it forbade it.

He said: “Boko Haram destroyed a total of 5,600 classrooms in Bornu State alone and they produced a total of 54,911 widows and 52,311 orphans.

“We have no option as leaders but to invest in the education of our youths, because these orphans and widows, if we fail to take care of them, in 10 to 15 years, they will become the Frankenstein monster that will destroy all of us.”

Dickson said the militancy in his part of the Niger Delta started seeing a marked reduction following extensive investment in developing post-secondary school infrastructure.

“When I took over, there was not a single boarding school in Bayelsa State. If you’re wondering why some places have issues of militancy, insurgency, instability, criminality, unemployability and other similar crises, you just need to look at the state of and investment in education.

“When I became governor in 2012, standing on the podium at my inaugural speech, I declared a state of emergency on education. When I came down, a lot of my friends told me I had destroyed my government. ‘Where are you going to get the money to fund such a weighty declaration?’ For me, it was a question of priority.

“Now in Bayelsa, we have almost 15 model boarding schools. We also set up our flagship secondary school, the Ijaw National Academy, with over 1,000 students. All of them are on state government scholarships. We selected the best boys and girls from all the primary schools, irrespective of the background, capacity or pedigree of their parents, in all the Ijaw speaking areas along the coastline of Nigeria from Ondo to Awka Ibom.”

Senator Tinubu urged Nigerians to invest in improving education standards across the country, as no government could do it alone.

She said: “Many of us are dissatisfied with the state of education in Nigeria today. Indeed, those who understand the full ramifications, of defective, incomplete, non-competitive or non-existent education will be appalled. Already, it has been noted that due to inaccessibility of education and high incidences of drop outs, Africa lacks a critical mass of skilled labour.

“Beyond the inaccessibility of formal schooling, we must also avert our minds to the quality of our schools.

“We should be concerned about the nexus between the type, structure and standard of education in our country on the one hand and the quality of the students that graduate from our schools on the other hand.

“We should concern ourselves with the curriculum and the need for relevant, current, useful and globally competitive education. We must also pay attention to the state of infrastructure, staffing, teacher training, and enrollment capacity vis-a-vis total population; the integrity of our examinations and the resultant certifications they confer.

Prof. Williams urged the elite to focus on assisting teachers to upgrade their skills so they can impart world-class education on pupils.

Members and leaders of the party who met at Epe, praised the governor for transforming the state.

They urged Lagos residents to support the administration’s efforts.

Lagos East APC Leader Alhaji Akanni Seriki said Ambode had surpassed the expectations of the people, adding that Epe residents were proud of him.

The party leader said the construction of roads and other infrastructure developments across the state had positioned Lagos as the best city in Nigeria and one of the fastest-developing cities in the world.

He thanked the party’s National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, for allowing Epe to produce the governor, noting that the people were behind Ambode.

Seriki urged party members and those outside the party to support the governor.

The party chieftain noted that APC’s dream to make Lagos better could only be achieved through collective efforts.

He said the choice of Ambode as the governor was not misplaced, adding that those who contested the position with him would agree that Lagos was in safe hands.

Seriki said: “I give thanks to God who made it possible through Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for Ambode to be our governor. Epe residents are proud of him, just as other Lagosians have openly commended the great work he is doing.

“Those who disagree on the choice of Ambode when he was initially presented and those who contested against him are now comfortably at home that he has not disappointed the people.”

Also, the Balogun of Epe, Chief Lanre Razak said Lagos East Senatorial District was mustering the support to ensure that Ambode completes the good working he is doing.

He said the roads, schools and health facilities dotting the nooks and crannies of Lagos under Ambode were increasing.

According to him, the party will unite and support the governor’s efforts to record more successes.

The zone’s Publicity Secretary Chief Tunde Temionu said the gathering was to review the performance of the party.

He said: “You can see what happened today that the turnout was really encouraging. This did not just happen; it is because the governor is doing well in the discharge of his responsibilities to the people.

“We are one family; we are all united for the same purpose. We are not going to relent. We will continue to do the needful to promote the good work the governor is doing in the state. We are really proud of him.”
