    •Lagos  empowers 2,613 women entrepreneurs with N2.1b

GOVERNORS Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos), Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom), Godwin Obaseki (Edo), Seriaki Dickson (Bayelsa) and Ayodele Fayose (Ekiti) have hailed the contributions of women to the society and nation-building.

They spoke at the opening of the 17th National Women Conference organised by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) in Lagos with the theme: “She creates, she transforms”.

The governors took turns to celebrate the doggedness, dexterity and creativity of women and their notable contributions towards building a better society.

In his goodwill message at the event, Ambode lauded the resilience of women in their different spheres, noting that women are naturally-gifted with skills and talents that make positive difference and impact on their generation.

He said: “Our women are constantly creative; making something out of nothing. Creativity has become very essential to succeed in today’s world because we face new challenges everyday – at home and at work. As the woman creates and transforms, she positively impacts the family, the workplace and the nation.

“With the female population in our country today, it is clear that our women have the capacity to positively affect the Nigerian economy and are already doing so.”

He was optimistic that the conference, aside celebrating the resilient and dynamic nature of women under diverse situations, would go a long way to unleash the creative and transformative energies of more women.

Ambode, who restated his administration’s commitment to supporting female entrepreneurs, added that as at September 2017, no fewer than 2,613 female entrepreneurs, who run Medium and Small Scale businesses have been funded through the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund to the tune of N2.1 billion, assuring that more would be given before the end of the year.

The governor congratulated the first female mechanic, Sandra Aguebor, who was presented with the Inspirational Woman of the Year Award, saying she had dared to succeed in a career many see as a sole reserve for men.

Emmanuel, who was guest of honour, lauded COWLSO Chairman and Lagos State Governor’s wife Mrs. Bolanle Ambode for sustaining and improving the COWLSO conference, which started 17 years ago.

The governor said there was need for women as liberator of the world to be appreciated by every man for their contributions to growth at all times.

On the theme of this year’s conference, Emmanuel urged women to live their lives by creating and transforming people and things around them without minding the shortcomings, adding that it was important for them to keep hope alive.

Also, Dickson said the role of women in transforming life could not be under-estimated, saying that it was imperative for women to always be appreciated and celebrated.

Dickson and Obaseki hailed Lagos State for the initiative, saying that they would replicate same in their states for the benefit of women.

On his part, Fayose said life without women would be full of crises, saying that it was important for women to be given opportunity to be in the drivers’ seat in the country.

In her welcome address, Mrs. Ambode urged women to speak up against the barbaric practice of female genital mutilation, saying that the campaign must start from the home-front, churches, mosques,  offices and the communities.

Mrs. Ambode said: “Female genital mutilation is evil, it is wicked, it is anti-social and unjustifiable. In fact, it is a crime against women. We must devote time for enlightenment and awareness, especially among uneducated mothers. We must stand together against it, until the practice is totally eradicated in our country and the world.”

She urged woman to resist the temptation of pursuing economic empowerment at the expense of taking good care and paying attention to their children, stressing that children who do not enjoy parental care, easily grow to become potentially dangerous youths and threatening the peace of the society.

“The rising trend of leaving the girl-child entirely in the care of housemaids, neighbours or strangers in pursuit of income or for flimsy reasons, should be discouraged.

“We must desist from and discourage child-labour, child-abuse and fight child trafficking with all our strength. We owe it a duty to give good parenting to our children and indeed all other children put in our care. We must give them hope and allow them see the positive side of life, as a way of bringing back good morals and societal stability,” Mrs. Ambode said.

In her keynote address, the Vice President’s wife Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo urged women to work hard to transform their children and wards into greatness and create a safe and secured society by inculcating the right virtues in their children.

She particularly urged the womenfolk to draw inspiration from women who had performed creditably well in their chosen profession, and endeavour to leave their footprints on the sands of time.

Mrs. Osinbajo said women must speak up against rape and all forms of abuse against women and children, and also speak in defence of the downtrodden and less-privileged in the society.

Highlight of the event was the presentation of the Inspirational Woman Award Mrs. Aguebor by Mrs. Osinbajo and the unveiling and beautiful rendition of the COWLSO anthem.

Ambode unveils Fela’s statue in Ikeja

As part of activities marking the 79th posthumous birthday of the Late Afrobeat Legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode on Sunday unveiled the Liberation Statue erected his honour at Allen Roundabout in Ikeja

Eulogizing the virtues of the late musician and freedom fighter, Governor Ambode described him as an enigmatic artiste who used the platform of his art to agitate for social and human rights by challenging government and people to explore development through social and economic activities that are rooted in African values.

Governor Ambode said aside from challenging people to free their minds of all inhibitions and actualise their true potentials, the late music icon also voluntarily turned his back on a life of comfort and privilege, and took up his saxophone as a weapon to fight for the liberation of the people from neo-colonialism and bad governance.

While insisting that the spirit of Fela was still alive as a movement of social consciousness and justice against oppression, the Governor said the late legend made the world sit up and take notice of the energy of African art and music, adding that he will forever be accorded his position in the global hall of fame of artistes.

“The phenomenon that the world knows as ‘Fela’ was deeply rooted in the evolution of Lagos State. The story of music, art, entertainment and tourism in Lagos and Nigeria cannot be told without an eloquent mention of the “Abami eda”.

“On this day, October 15th, which would have been Fela’s 79th birthday, the government and people of Lagos State celebrate ”Fela” with the unveiling of this Liberation Statue.  It has been 20 years since he passed on but the memories he left us with remain evergreen. Today we celebrate a man who voluntarily turned his back on a life of comfort and privilege, and took up his saxophone as a weapon to fight for the liberation of our people from neo-colonialism and bad governance.

“This “Liberation” statue is not an image of Fela but a symbol of Fela’s philosophy. This artwork was created as a form of respect and remembrance to this legend; what he stood for and fought for with his music; his mythology; struggle for freedom; fight for human dignity; social consciousness; courage and Pan-Africanism,” the Governor said.

Responding on behalf of the family, Fela’s daughter and social commentator, Yeni Kuti commended Governor Ambode and the artist for coming up with such a monument to recognize and honour their father in a big way, saying that it was a good representation of their late patriarch.

She specifically justified the design of the monument, saying it was the expression of how the artist felt about the late legend.

He said though Fela was no more, but it was gratifying that he is still alive in his music and in the music of Femi, Seun and other artistes who have followed his style of music, assuring that the unveiled statue would be the first of many to celebrate the Afrobeat icon.

Ambode is a committed leader, says Ashafa

The senator representing Lagos East in the National Assembly, Olugbenga Ashafa, has said Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is a visionary, committed and courageous leader.

The Senator made the comment while addressing the press at the ongoing Lagos State Executive/Legislative Parley 2017 themed “Mega City to Smart City.” Ashafa stated that “Let me seize this opportunity to commend His Excellency Governor Ambode and the entire team of Lagos State Government under his leadership for the awesome work of further transforming Lagos State. The socioeconomic and infrastructure development going on around the state can only be a testament of one thing: Visionary, committed and courageous Leadership.”

The Senator also identified Lagos State as being in the forefront of development across the country stating that “No doubt Lagos State has been in the forefront of development across the Country and this is so not necessarily because we have so much resources, but because the resources coming into Lagos have been well managed by the Governor of Lagos State and his team.”

Ambode backs Tinubu on devolution of powers to states

LAGOS State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode said yesterday he was solidly behind the position of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on devolution of powers and the need to entrench true federalism.

Ambode spoke at the Fourth Quarter, 2017 Town Hall Meeting, the 9th in the series, at the SUBEB Proposed Permanent Site in Kosofe Local Government.

He said the clamour across the country for restructuring was not out of place as the present political structure was seriously hindering Nigeria’s growth.

Tinubu, at a forum held in Lagos, backed the call for devolution of powers and the need for the nation to truly adopt the practice of true federalism.

He noted that it was the surest way to correct the nation’s power imbalance and quell the agitations for secession.

Ambode, while responding to a question raised by a resident on true federalism, said: “I support true federalism; I support all the issues raised by Asiwaju; we are on the same page. That is the page of APC; that is where we are and that is what we are committed to.

“Like I have always said, we need to deal with issues that relate to devolution of powers. Like somebody said, if I have more resources, all these items that you are coming to raise here, once you raise it, I will just say done. I need more money. So, why should somebody be saying they are the ones in charge of inland waterways, when the waterways is transporting my own people and my own services and when there is a law about it?”

Ambode also queried why despite the existence of Hotel Occupancy and Restaurant Consumption Law enacted by the Lagos State House of Assembly, there were still attempts from the Federal Government to regulate hotels and entertainment centres in the state, a situation he said was an anomaly that should be addressed accordingly.

The governor said: “We enacted a law and somebody says he wants to do another law that regulates hotels inside Lagos. Is it not because of the roads that they put hotel there? That is what devolution of power is saying. If these things are on Residual List, let local government and states deal with them. That is all that we are asking for. It’s not that we will generate Value Added Tax (VAT) here and somebody will be sharing 50 per cent of the VAT somewhere else.

“So, obviously that is the whole idea behind this agitation for true federalism, devolution of powers and the need to use it to liberate ourselves so that we can get more prosperous; so that our people can be more comfortable and it is all about the welfare of our people. Our people have said we should do this work and we must be able to speak on your behalf on the things that really matter to all of you,” he said.

Lagos backs Tinubu on devolution of powers- Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday said the State Government is backing  the position of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on the issues of devolution of powers and the need to entrench true federalism.

Governor Ambode, who spoke at the Fourth Quarter, 2017 Town Hall Meeting, the 9th in the series, held at the SUBEB Proposed Permanent Site in Kosofe Local Government, said the clamour across the country for restructuring was not out of place as the current political structure was seriously hindering Nigeria’s development.

Tinubu, at a forum held in Lagos recently, backed the calls for devolution of powers and the need for the nation to truly adopt the practice of true federalism, submitting that it was the surest way to correct the nation’s power imbalance and quell the agitations for secession.

The Governor, while responding to a question raised by a resident on calls for true federalism said, “I support true federalism; I support all the issues raised by Asiwaju; we are on the same page. That is the page of APC; that is where we are and that is what we are committed to. Like I have always said, we need to deal with issues that relate to devolution of powers. So, why should somebody be saying they are the ones in charge of inland waterways when the waterways is transporting my own people and my own services and when there is a law about it”.

Governor Ambode also questioned why despite the existence of Hotel Occupancy and Restaurant Consumption Law enacted by the Lagos State House of Assembly, there were still attempts from the central government to regulate hotels and entertainment centres in the State, a situation he said was an anomaly that should be addressed accordingly.

“We enact a law and somebody says he wants to do another law that regulates hotels inside Lagos. Is it not because of the roads that they put hotel there? That is what devolution of power is saying. If these things are on residual list, let Local Government and States deal with them. That is all that we are asking for. Our people have said that we should do this work and we must be able to speak on your behalf on the things that really matter to all of you,” he said.

Alluding to the fact that the last four months of the year, popularly called the Ember months usually spring up security challenges, the Governor charged Traditional Rulers and community leaders in the State to join hands with the State Government to wage a total war against all forms of crimes as well as drug abuse in their various communities.

He said his administration will not relent in its efforts towards reducing the menace, adding however that concerted efforts from the traditional rulers and community leaders, who are closest to the people, were very pivotal to achieving the desired result.

“We are in October and we are going to December, naturally, when it gets to the ember months, somehow traditionally, crime rate go up but in the last two years, we have been able to reduce crime rate when it is coming to December.

“I want to appeal to all our traditional rulers and other community leaders; there is a need for us to support the Neighborhood Safety Corps. Also our volunteers and the people should now be more vigilant and then cooperate with our security agencies to maintain law and order.  I want to reduce the crime rate to the barest minimum and I know that we are going to engage a lot of our youths in end of the year activities to make sure that peace continue to reign in Lagos,” the Governor said.

Besides, Governor Ambode also implored the various Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to increase their awareness campaign on the dangers of drug abuse, saying that there was an urgent need for them to also join the fight against all forms of domestic and sexual violence.

“Like people already know, we are at the forefront of fighting drugs, sexual abuse and violence against women and children, we will not relent in fighting these menace in the society. I believe strongly this is the time to talk to our children; I believe strongly this is the time to talk to our wards and even those who are around us that this time around, the State Government is ready to fight crime in all its ramifications,” he said.

The Governor also commended residents for their continuous support to his administration, saying that it had gone a long way in driving the various infrastructural development programmes implemented by the State Government.

He particularly commended the efforts of some community associations who have taken the initiative to start up projects in their vicinity, assuring that aside recognition from the State Government, his administration would ensure that such projects would be supported to ensure realisation.

Governor Ambode also tasked chairmen of the 20 local government and 37 local council development areas to look into the welfare of persons living with disabilities and the elderly, saying that the all inclusive mantra of his administration must be felt in every part of the State.

The Governor, who reeled out some of the major projects embarked on by his administration in the last quarter which include commencement of the reconstruction of Oshodi International Airport Road, construction of Pen Cinema Flyover, opening of the DNA Centre, appealed to residents on inconveniences being experienced as a result of ongoing projects and assured that they would be completed on schedule.

He said the State Government was deeply concerned about the traffic situation in Apapa area in recent times, saying that efforts would be put in place to address it, just as he said that 43 major link roads affected by rain would be rehabilitated before the end of the year.

Among dignitaries present at the event include Senator Gbenga Ashafa, Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora, former Deputy Governor, Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, former Speakers of the House of Assembly, Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, Hon Jokotola Pelumi, APC Chairman in Lagos, Chief Henry Ajomale, Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu I and other major traditional rulers, members of the State Executive Council, among others.

  • Ambode to end building collapse

    Ambode to end building collapse

The Lagos State Government has promised to bring an end to records of building collapse in the state.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Abiola Anifowoshe, said this during the induction ceremony for recruited and deployed staffs to the Lagos State Materials Testing Labouratory (LSMTL) in Magodo, Lagos.

He said the staff employment was sequel to the spate of collapsed buildings experienced in the state, arising from engagement of quacks in the construction of structures, use of substandard building materials by property developers, poor sensitisation on undertaking material testing in building and civil engineering construction.

According to him, building collapse has led to colossal loss of innocent lives and properties across the state. “In order to prevent further happenings, the state Governor, approved the recruitment of 115 staff for LSMTL.

They comprise of Civil engineers, Building officers, Chemical engineers, Geologists, Quantity surveyors, Architect, Driver, Mechanics and Cleaners.”

He noted that the type of materials, equipments and machines that LSMTL has in their labouratory, with the newly added staff, would make the sky the limit. “I can assure you that the rate of collapse will be reduced to the bearest minimum and possibly no collapse at all.”

He said the gesture was another proof of the several people oriented and sustainable programmes of the state governor, geared towards creating gainful employment for her citizens.

The Permanent Secretary, Mrs Boladele Dapo-Thomas, represented by the Acting General Manager, Olalekan Ajani, said the three-day induction programme is to impact the new staffs with knowledge.

She said the public service is all about service delivery to the people, noting that it is the government’s tool of implementing her policies, programmes and agenda.

She told the new staffs  to acquaint themselves with the basic and general rules, regulations and principles guiding the conduct in or out of service.

“Our business at LSMTL is to help curb the incidence of incessant collapse in building and civil engineering infrastructure, by testing materials used in the ‘building and construction industry’ for quality assurance. We are empowered by subsisting law to test existing buildings and civil engineering infrastructure to ascertain their structural integrity so as to prevent collapse.

Ambode signs 500 Certificates of Occupancy monthly

The Lagos State Government yesterday said at least 500 Certificate of Occupancies (C of Os) are approved monthly by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to scale up provision of housing and create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Abiola Anifowose, who stated this while addressing a news conference in Alausa on activities lined up by the government to celebrate this year’s United Nations World Habitat Day, said the present administration had initiated several initiatives to reposition the Lands Bureau for greater efficiency and quality service delivery.

He said the theme of this year’s celebration which is “Housing Policy: Affordable Homes,” is in line with the commitment of the government to ensure provision of affordable houses to more Lagosians, while also reducing the bottlenecks previously associated with land administration.

He recalled the introduction of Rent-to-Own housing policy of the government which allows people to pay monthly rent leading to eventual ownership of such houses, and the reduction in prices of the housing units in government schemes across the state, saying that such initiatives were geared toward increasing home ownership.

Anifowose said: “In the last few months, the present administration has repositioned the Lands Bureau and the agency now offers world class services. As we speak, Lagos State has started processing Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) online and every month, the Governor signs more than 500 C of Os. All the bottlenecks of the past have been confined to the dustbin of history.

“This is just the beginning and I can assure the people that by the end of December this year, we are installing more equipment and from the comfort of their homes, offices or wherever they are, people can get all the information needed on land administration including the e-planning system.”

Urging the people to cooperate with government in its bid to rid the state of unwholesome practices in the building sector, Anifowose said it was important for those intending to embark on any development to get the necessary approval and information on the land intended to be used for such construction.

He said: “The first thing you should do if you want to acquire a land in Lagos is to call for land planning information.
