A major highlight of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Lagos State Government and Nigerian Breweries Plc. on the ‘One Lagos Fiesta’.

The governor pledged continuous co-operation and partnership between the state and Nigerian Breweries Plc. “We are part of this partnership and we shall do all to support it”, he said, while assuring of his government’s support in creating an enabling environment for the company. Ambode hails Gbadamosi as founding father of Lagos

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday described the late literary icon and foremost industrialist, Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi, as “one of the founding fathers of modern Lagos”.

He said the late Gbadamosi contributed greatly to the development of Lagos State.

Ambode spoke yesterday at a well-attended reception organised by the government in honour of Gbadamosi.

The governor said the late economist and industrialist was commissioner for Economic Planning and ended his service to the state as co-chairman of the Lagos at 50 Celebration Committee.

His words: “I stand here on behalf of Lagosians to celebrate selflessness. Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi was an illustrious son of Ikorodu; a true son of Lagos; a patriotic Nigerian; an elder statesman; a thoroughbred economist; a lover of arts par excellence; a consummate businessman; and above all a selfless Nigerian.

“He was not just a father but one of the founding fathers of modern-day Lagos. We, in Lagos State, will forever cherish his contribution to the growth and development of Lagos State. He was a fine gentleman; a father; an uncle; and a lively person. We, in the state government, will miss him so much.”

Recalling the backlash that trailed Gbadamosi’s appointment into the committee on health grounds, the governor said he (Gbadamosi) stood his ground and never allowed it to deter him from selflessly serving the state, and urged other members to make the events to celebrate the state bigger and more successful in his memory.

President of Lagos Chambers of Commerce and Industry Mrs. Nike Akande, in her tribute, said the late Gbadamosi personified hard work, adding that he was an amiable and hard working industrialist, who always bring deep intellectual insight into national issues.

On his part, veteran actor Olu Jacobs said Gbadamosi was passionately committed to standing with the people and was always particular about the welfare of the arts and artists.

Responding on behalf of the family, Gbadamosi’s eldest child, Mrs. Morounkunbi Osinoiki thanked the government for organising the tribute, saying it was well appreciated by the family.

  • We have lost a great Lagosian, say Ambode, Aregbesola

We have lost a great Lagosian, say Ambode, Aregbesola

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola have expressed shock over the passage of foremost industrialist and economist, Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi.

Gbadamosi, who was a Co-chairman of the Lagos @ 50 Committee, died on Wednesday at the age of 72.

Ambode, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, said he was truly saddened by the demise of the former Minister for National Planning.

The statement described the late Gbadamosi as a true Lagosian, who was passionate and always willing to serve his state and fatherland.

“As a foundation member of the first Lagos State Executive Council after the state’s creation in 1967, he contributed immensely towards laying a solid foundation for what is today the foremost state in the country and the nation’s Centre of Excellence.

“He also distinguished himself as a Federal Minister and the Chairman, Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA).

“Chief Gbadamosi was a sound economist, one of the best in his generation. His passion to serve his fatherland was never in doubt,’’ it said.

“He was the youngest commissioner in Lagos State at 27, an industrialist and a very consistent financial expert.

“He was a proud son of Lagos State, who had paid his dues over the decade.

“A financial guru and a public administrator per excellence, who would never shy away from letting people know that he was a thoroughbred Lagos boy born in Ikorodu,’’ the governor said.

Aregbesola described the late Gbadamosi as a leading industrialist, humanist, art  and culture promoter and writer.

In a condolence message signed by the Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Office of the Governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, Aregbesola described the death of the industrialist as the “passage of a good man.”

The governor, who prayed for the repose of Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi’s soul and extended his condolences to the immediate family, members of the business community, the people of Lagos State, where he hailed from and Nigeria at large.

Aregbesola urged Lagos State Governor Akinwumi Ambode, people of the business and art communities to take with equanimity the death of Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi, describing it as an inevitable end for all.

“On behalf of the good people of Osun, it is our fervent prayer that Allah will grant him Aljanah Firdaus and give the people of Lagos State the fortitude to bear the loss.”

    Kudos for Ambode on achievements

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Chief Emmanuel Remi-Williams, has praised Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for his achievements.

He said: “As a matter of fact, I couldn’t believe that a retired civil servant or administrator could enter politics at the apex and achieve so much within a short time. It is very rare, especially in a volatile and cosmopolitan state like Lagos.’’

He listed as achievements of the building of roads, bridges, among others. “New roads have been opened to ease perennial traffic hold ups in the state. For instance, as soon as you enter Lagos through the Ibadan expressway bridge, you are in a fix. So, also work is ongoing at the Epe-Itokin-Ikorodu Expressway. I dove my cap for Governor Ambode for taking the bull by the horn in the area to secure or minimise loss of lives,’’ he said.

“I submit that perhaps the APC National Leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has a magical wand for choosing candidates for positions contrary to the belief that he imposes them. It only means that he has a good sense of judgment. His observation and assignment is par excellent that leaves nothing to be desired,’ ’ he added.

Pa. Remi-Williams recalled that, during the Second Republic, there was never a time the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) held primaries and that the choice of governorship candidates was not supported the party leaders. He added: “There was massive support for party and obedience for party leaders.”

He said the picking of governorship candidates in Lagos followed the same pattern and that those criticising the APC leader should read the history of the state very well, adding that Tinubu had not done anything wrong.

He said instead of criticising him, they should praise him. “The APC national leader is worthy of emulation because he met the progressives and disagreed with the way they operated. He introduced a new formula instead of following the archaic way of choosing candidates and his ideas were embraced by the people, especially the youth, he said.

Pa. Remi-Williams urged the government to visit Epe and learn to improve on the legacies of the late business mogul Ricketts in the axis of the state, saying that the merchant’s family businesses’ tentacles covered saw milling, education and schools.  He said the government could boost water transport as a viable means of transport.

    Ambode hailed for good governance

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has been hailed for his exemplary leadership and good governance.

The President, Patriotic Christian Leaders Forum (PCLF), Dr. Adefunmilayo Akitoye-Braimoh, who spoke in Lagos at the annual intercessory prayer summit organised by the forum to pray for peace and progress, said Ambode distinguished himself as a good administrator by giving the people democracy dividends, despite the recession.

Akitoye-Braimoh, a senior special assistant to ex-Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola on Religious Affairs (Christian), urged Nigerians to be calm and optimistic, as the country’s future was bright.

The woman, who spoke on the theme: ’Spare Thy People O Lord’, taking her illustration from Joel 2:17, said “despite our sins, God will forgive us if we repent and forsake them, because He is merciful.”

She said the programme was organised yearly to pray to God “for His intervention in our affairs so that He will guide our leaders to rule us well.”

“This is not the first time we are organising this prayer. We did so during the tenure of former Governors Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Fashola and they were successful,” Mrs. Akitoye-Braimoh added.

The Bishop-elect of Methodist Church Nigeria, Bishop Stephen Adegbite, prophesied that God would save Nigeria from the jaws of evil doers, irrespective of the antics of Satan, because “He created Nigeria for a purpose and the purpose will be fulfilled. If our leaders can properly manage the resources of the country, Nigeria will be one of the best countries in the world.”

The event was attended by personalities, including the wife of former Lagos State Governor Fashola, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, wife of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Mrs. Nike Obasanjo and others.

Lagos is home to big dreamers – Ambode

    •Unveils Eko Pearl Tower

Lagos State Governor Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Friday evening said the state has the capacity and wherewithal to accommodate those who can dream big and realise their potentials to the fullest. The Governor, who spoke at the unveiling of the Eko Pearl Towers, a 24-storey state-of-the-art residential building, located within the Eko Atlantic City, Victoria Island, said the core objectives of his administration was to create an enabling environment for local and foreign investors alike to thrive.

Ambode who called up Chief Executive Officer of Eko Pearl Construction Company, Mr. Elias Saad and Chief Executive Officer, Chagoury Group, Mr. Ronald Chagoury, to the stage during his remarks at the occasion, appreciated the duo, saying that they believed in the future of Lagos and did not hesitate to invest.

“Lagos State is looking for dreamers, you are more than a dreamer.  What you’ve done here is nothing but just to inspire the rest of the city of Lagos saying that if we join hands together, we can do it. Lagos is the land of opportunities and many investment opportunities abound in transportation, entertainment and tourism. Our commitment is to create an environment where your investments are secure and profitable,” he said.

He said the Eko Atlantic City Project, when completed, would go a long way to create employment and wealth for the people of the state. The governor added that aside being a major part of the changing face of Lagos, the project was also one of the most anticipated in the history of Nigeria and Africa. Describing the unveiling of the Eko Pearl Towers as a remarkable day in the history of the state as the Eko Atlantic City gradually comes to life, Ambode said the structure, in all ramifications, represents the new standard for property development.

“Eko Pearl Towers, the first residential development in Eko Atlantic City, is a set of high-rise buildings, privately owned and developed by the Eko Pearl Construction Company. I am told that the tower is a collection of deluxe two, three bedroom and penthouse type apartments with Sea and Marina views. As we can see, this is a magnificent pearl by all standards, and the new standard for property development in Lagos State,” Ambode said.

The governor said his administration was embarking on many urbanisation projects which, when completed would deliver a Lagos that will compete favourably with all the mega city-states of the world which Lagosians can be proud of. “All these efforts will reposition Lagos State, putting it firmly on the international map as not just the financial, commercial and tourist hub of Africa but also to create employment and wealth for our people.”

Earlier, Chief Executive Officer of Eko Pearl Construction Company, Mr. Elias Saad, thanked the Lagos State Government for their support in helping him actualise his dream. He said that the Eko Pearl Towers, also known as the Black Pearl Towers, was a residential high rise building located in the centre of Eko Atlantic City, adding that the White Pearl Tower under construction would also be ready by next year. People call me the dreamer, I’m so happy that I was able to actualise my dream in Lagos by delivering the Eko Pearl Towers like I promised”, Saad said.

Ambode gives varsity scholarships to two best pupils

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday gave full university scholarships to best outgoing pupils of Itohan Girls’ Grammar School on Sapele Road in Benin, the Edo State capital.

He hailed his Edo State counterpart, Adams Oshiomhole, for the people-oriented projects inaugurated in the twilight of his administration.

The Lagos governor said the fact that the projects were completed when Nigeria was facing economic challenges showed Oshiomhole’s astute, prudent and visionary leadership.

Ambode spoke when he inaugurated the rebuilt Itohan Girls’ Grammar School on Sapele Road in Benin, the state capital, to mark the end of Oshiomhole’s administration.

Noting that education remained the bedrock of the society, Ambode said the inauguration of the secondary school with modern facilities as well as the state’s top-class university underscored the importance which Oshiomhole attached to education.

He said: “Oshiomhole understands leadership and the needs of his people. He understands the concept of inclusive governance and making sure nobody is left behind. The projects inaugurated today (yesterday) demonstrated the government of inclusion which this administration has been running.

“This is very remarkable and it is very significant because this is one governor who actually started well and is ending very strong. Roads have been inaugurated in areas that needed government attention and presence.

“We are very sure these roads will open up communities and even join three local governments together and also accelerate growth and development.”

  • Ambode hailed on peace, unity

    Ambode hailed on peace, unity

The Igbo community in Lagos has praised Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for maintaining peace and cordial relationship among the diverse ethnic groups that reside in the state.

Describing Lagos State as the microcosm of the entire country, the Igbo community, speaking through the Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State, Christian Uchechukwu Nwachukwu and his Council of Chiefs, said since assumption of office, Ambode has regarded and treated everyone, irrespective of religious and ethnic leanings, as Lagosians.

They spoke at the Lagos State Igbo Community Centre, Okota area of Lagos on Sunday while appraising the success of this year’s New Yam Festival celebration held on Saturday, October 29.

The Eze and his Chiefs expressed their happiness that the Governor identified with Ndigbo during the celebration by sending high-powered delegation to represent him, even as they saluted his wife, Bolanle for also sending a powerful delegation to represent her.

They were of the view that “the gesture indicates that the Igbo and other non-indigenes have got a home away from home in Lagos State.”

They urged Ndigbo to ensure that the cordial relationship existing among them and owners of the land continued. They also implored them to obey the laws of the land and remain obedient to the government in power.

“The All Progressives Congress (APC) administration in Lagos State has demonstrated the ability to care for all, irrespective of ethnic or religious inclinations. It is therefore necessary that the gesture be reciprocated by all through being law-abiding and respectful to constituted authority in Lagos State. There is also the need for all residents of Lagos State to love one another in order to ensure that Ambode’s plans for all are realised,” they said.

They Eze and his Council of Chiefs also praised the sterling qualities of Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu who ensured that he was represented by two powerful members of his Oba’s Council and many White-cap Chiefs. They noted that “even though Oba Akiolu was not in the country, yet he sent people to represent him. That was a show of magnanimity which also indicates that he is a man who relishes peace, unity and friendship.” They wished him more rewarding reign on the throne.

They also thanked many dignitaries who attended the fiesta. They included Most Rev. Dr MVC Iheanachor, the Publicity Secretary of the APC in Lagos, Mr Joe Igbokwe, the leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike; a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. • Ambode has performed better than Fashola, says PDP lawmaker

Ambode has performed better than Fashola, says PDP lawmaker

Hon. Victor Akande is a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member of the Lagos state House of Assembly representing Ojo constituency 1. He spoke with Oziegbe Okoeki about his experience as an opposition lawmaker. He also spoke about the Akinwunmi Ambode administration, the anti-corruption war and other issues.

As a PDP member in the Lagos State House of Assembly dominated by the APC, how will you describe your experience in the past one and half years as a minority member?

It has been a very good experience. Specifically, I want to denounce the word minority. You chose to be a minority when you want to be a minority. When you say minority, you are talking from the party affiliation. But, the moment you cross the borderline and you come into the august assembly to serve and represent your people, then, you are no longer a minority; you are in the majority. Because what matters most is getting the dividends of democracy to your constituents at the right time. And when you are still leaving in that dreamland of the minority, then, you are not doing yourself good; you are doing disservice to yourself and to your constituents. But, by and large, it has been a very wonderful experience. Thank God, the opposition should be encouraged because it brings out the best; I mean the best of legislative work. And where there is opposition, the citizenry can enjoy that opposition because everybody will be watching themselves. They want to perform. If you hear your counterpart doing well, you want to do well also and it is to the benefit of the Lagosians. In that wise, having two, three political parties representing people of different constituencies is very good. Secondly, it has been so wonderful because of the kind of leadership that we have in this House. When we talk like this, they will think we are praising them because we want to be or decamp to the APC. But, if somebody has done well, it is good for us to applaud him so that you”ll be encouraged to do more. The leadership of the House has really tried and he gave us a level playing ground so that we can be heard. Unlike in a situation where since they are in the majority, they will not even allow you to say anything on the floor of the House, but, our leadership here is not like that. He has been magnanimous to the extent that everybody is given an opportunity to be heard. And in his wisdom, he has tried to carry everybody along for the betterment of Lagosians. And that is what we have really enjoyed and I pray that we continue to enjoy the good relationship, because it is only when you have good relationship and rapport that development will come to Lagos and you would be able to do the legislative work the way it is supposed to be done.

There is a believe that the PDP members in the House have been swallowed by the APC …

I want to say to a larger extent, there is no time; at no point in time that the PDP issues was brought to the floor of the House that you wouldn’t hear my voice, even if that is the only voice you will hear, you can attest to that. Even apart from talking about PDP, there are no topical issues that is on the floor of the House that I, Hon. Victor Akande will not talk, not just talk, but make a very good contribution on the issue. So, I don’t know, I can not say for others, I can only talk for myself. I only know myself, I know why I am here and I am doing that which my people sent me, I am doing that which Lagosians want and that is to represent the people in the best way possible. If issues concerning the PDP are raised and the issues are germane or critical, I will talk. And let me tell you the truth, I am not supporting Mr. Speaker. When there are issues like that, he would definitely call one or two PDP people if their light is on. But, you can bear me witness that most often, myself and Hon. Jude Idimogun have always been talking. We are both in this together and I give it to Mr. Speaker. He would always call any PDP whose light is on to speak, he would want to hear our opinion, but when your light is not on what do you expect. You see, there have been this synergy that is working for us, when you are doing the job there is no need to fight. It is not a matter of buying you over, why am I here in the first instance, I am here to represent the people, in which way, to make good laws and if we can expunge or amend the anachronistic laws we will do that and again to attract dividends to my constituents. How? Looking at the problems and presenting it on the floor of the House in the form of bills or motion, that is why I am here. Aside that, if I am fighting the opposition that are in majority continuously, I am not going to attract anything. Will I now be applauded when I get back to my constituency for fighting them; no, that is not the issue and you don’t fight unnecessarily and there is nothing to fight about. You see, I have talked about the general hospital in my area and it has been approved. It is in this budget now, I have talked about some roads which they have started doing. I have talked about some schools and there is work on that already. So, if I continue fighting what is going to be my gain or what am I going to take back to my people to show them what I have done.

A lot of people believe that Lagos under Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is working. What is your view?

I have gone on air to say Ambode is trying. There was a time when he just came in, I was watching the man; and I say the man has what it takes. I want to say this, whether you like it or not, I want to say this categorically, Ambode is far, far better than Fashola. And when you look at what he has achieved within the short space of time, go and compare it to when Fashola came in. He has performed wonderfully well. But, you can not say Ambode is working or has performed without taking the glory back to the House of Assembly who put him on his toes. We are the lawmakers; we talk. He is just been proactive. Immediately we reach a resolution, before evening, the governor has already reacted to it. And that shows that he is a very good governor. He is performing. Nobody will take that away from him. Forget about party affiliation. But, the truth is that when you talk this way, people do not want to see. I don’t follow the bandwagon effect. I want a situation. Somebody is working. I tell you the truth. If you are not performing, I will tell you the truth. I don’t care what they are going to do to me. So, the man is trying. He is putting in all his efforts to make sure that he improves on what he met on ground.

What is your assessment of the war against corruption by President Muhammed Buhari?

If some people say it is one sided, I want to add salt to the injury. It is not just one sided, it is a course in vengeance. When you look at the way the whole thing is going on, why is the president only concerned about PDP? And not just the PDP, he is only concerned about some clique of people that he has had issues with or some people that were not doing his bidding. So, based on this, he is not just one sided, it is a kind of revenge. He is on a revenge mission because it is not only one sided, but one-sided that has revenge as an undertone and that is why you could see that, instead of focusing on developmental projects and policies, the president or the current administration is foot dragging. Nobody wants to go on revenge and will have it all. If you are not on revenge, you get people from here and there; get the best brain whether they are from the PDP or the APC. They work and you get result. But, because you are on a revenge mission, then, what do we have? You forget to develop the economy and the economy is dwindling every day. Look at the dollar rate now up till today. And it is a pity if the current administration does not see the good programmes and policies that was put in place by the past administration, which has agricultural undertone, entrepreneurship and which build the youths for the future. But now, we are going back into the stone age era. The era where men walk on foot alone, where we use the locomotives before we achieve the result, that is appalling. A situation where an eighty or seventy something  years old man is now given an ambassadorial position, what is he going to do or add? Which quality is he going to add? When we have a lot of people from 30 to 40 to 50 years languishing in abject poverty, no job, and you are still going to re-cycle an eighty something years old or 78 years old to come and take political office or appointment. That is a disaster.

What impact have you made on your constituents?

Let me say that, if I do well, my people will bring me back. If I don’t do well, let them not bring me back. But, I would do my best to make sure that I have it back in Ojo Constituency. Not individuals. If you are putting money or building castle in individual stomach, then, that is a problem.
