Ambode donates vans to Ikoyi, VI residents

LAGOS State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday donated two Toyota Hilux pick-up vans to the Victoria Island Ikoyi Residents Association (VIIRA).

The gesture is to sustain the gains of the clean-up of those  areas.

The governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Tunji Bello, at the event, restated his administration’s commitment to the success of the exercise.

He said the gesture became necessary to assist the residents’ association in driving the campaign and monitoring compliance.

According to him, the present administration believes that the government cannot do it alone and must involve the members of the community who are the first point of call for anybody living in the area.

He said: “The residents are the first to notice any infraction in any area and would be able to tell the government about it.

“These vehicles would be used in patrolling the cleaned up areas and would assist with the feedback mechanism which the state government has put in place to ensure that there is zero tolerance for shanties and illegal structures in Victoria Island and Ikoyi.”

Responding, a member of VIIRA’s executive committee, Dr Mohammed Salami, said the vehicles would be well utilised, adding that the donation came at a time the association is contending with shortage of patrol vehicles.

Ambode plans to setup economic team to scale up rating as 5th largest economy

Lagos State Governor Akinwumi Ambode has said the state will set up an economic team to help scale up the state’s current rating as the fifth largest economy in Africa.

Ambode spoke yesterday when he received a delegation from the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce in his office at Ikeja House.

The economic team would comprise of distinguished individuals from the private and public sector.

He said the emergence of Lagos was very instructive, adding that government would explore synergy with the private sector with the view to catapult Lagos into a true global city-state in the true sense of the word.

According to him, “very soon we would be setting up what we would refer to as an Economic Management Team to drive the fifth largest economy, because that’s the way we need to envision our self and this Economic Management Team will involve nominees from the Chambers and other people in the private sector.

Ambode said his administration has been investing massively in security and other business incentives because he understands the crucial role the private sector play.

He explained that the decision to come up with the Office of Oversees Affairs and Investment, otherwise known as Lagos Global, was part of efforts at encouraging investment in Lagos both from within and outside, among many other initiatives of the present administration.

“Because our economy is in the hands of the private sector and we are willing to allow them drive it, that is why we have decided to formulate policies and decisions that will make the private sector to thrive in this State and that is why in the last 18 months, we have been running this administration on a tripod of security, job opportunities and infrastructure development.”

Ambode said his administration is not leaving any stone unturned in providing security and enabling environment for businesses to thrive in the state.

The leader of the delegation and President of the Council, Prince Dapo Adelegan, congratulated the governor on the emergence of Lagos as the fifth largest economy in Africa.

He said the Chamber would be willing to partner with the government not only to globalise the state’s economy but also in the area of policy formulation, among other critical sectors.

  • Zuckerberg, Ambode and the emerging IT revolution in Lagos

Zuckerberg, Ambode and the emerging IT revolution in Lagos

Both are young, articulate, dynamic and share a similar passion for quality education delivery. Both are also driven by futuristic ideas with a global vision. Incidentally too, both are information-savvy philanthropists and providers of veritable platforms for the youths to freely express their views. But while one is a Jewish-American, the other is Omo Naija gon-goni, as we describe true-born Nigerians in Pidgin English parlance. Yet, there is still more to their point of convergence than people may readily admit. But who really are we talking about here?

The first of course, is Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Face book .

His name certainly rings a loud and crisp-clear note in the vast firmament of our knowledge- economy that drives several global thoughts and processes, virtually on daily basis. He, along with his friends, Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes and Eduardo Saverin, by their sheer creative ingenuity   came up with the site which allows users to create their own profiles, upload photos and communicate with other users. That was in 2004. By the end of that year it had reached 1 million users. But it has since grown to more than 250 million people, over the past 12 years, making  Zuckerberg a billionaire.

That global attention was riveted on the commercial nerve-centre of Nigeria; nay the West African Sub-region by his recent visit was understandable. It clearly signals a profound message of increasing hope for faster economic development of the megalopolis and that of the youths. There comes in the commendable giant steps, so far taken by the governor of the host state, the highly focused and resourceful,

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration to reposition the state for an all-embracing Centre of socio-economic and political.  Notably, he has since assumption of office about one and a half years ago propelled his vision of Lagos  as a destination of choice for any serious-minded, entrepreneur from anywhere in the world. What with the assurance of all-round, tight security network, courtesy of his donation of top-of-the range security gadgets to the police and all-inclusive community surveillance, across the state. What with the massive infrastructural development of roads, bridges and clearing of waterways to facilitate journeys by sea. What about the focus on the triple projects of Eko Atlantic City, the $300 Elegushi Kingdom Imperial City as well as the history-making Smart City, coming up in conjunction with Smart City LLC, Dubai  being  the first of its kind in Africa.

Indeed, it is heart-warming to note that the Co-Creation Hu CcHub, the first of the two facilities visited by Zucerberg at Yaba, Lagos  was donated by the state government. Its noble aim is to further the cause of enhanced, ICT-driven entrepreneurial activities that the state is currently known for.In fact, the visitor  was so thrilled that he had this to say: “ I got to talk to kids at a summer coaching camp and entrepreneurs who came to Cchub to build and launch their apps. I’m looking forward to meeting more people in Nigeria.”Truth is, that Zuckerberg had read a lot about it before his visit but needed to find out, first-hand what the true situation was.

That inspired his scientifically-honed, inquisitive mind to sneak into the city at the wee of that night, unnoticed. Beyond  getting  to breathe the fresh, free  air of Lagos, he jugged along the modern Lekki- Ikoyi link bridge  in the company of some youths to show the world that here, indeed, is the next Dubai to do business in safety, comfort and style.

That also puts to rest the fundamental questions that would have been raised if the situation was otherwise. Could he have risked his dear life to travel to a violence-prone and politically unstable city? Of course, not. Could he also have dared to meet with whiz kids of Information Communication Technology (ICT) at the Yaba-based Andela, if the enabling environment has not been provided by the state government? Certainly, not.

For instance, Andela  is on record that Andela is an engineering organisation building and raising the next generation of technical leaders in Africa. As a business venture it recruits the most talented technologists in Africa and shapes them into world-class developers.

The course runs for four years. It has accepted 200 engineers from a pool of 40,000 applicants in its first two years of operation. It would be recalled that early this year, Chan Zuckerberg Initiative gladly  invested in Andela because it was greatly impressed by the company’s innovative model of learning and its determination to connect the global technology ecosystem, using the most talented developers in Africa.

According to Seni Sulyman, the Director of Andela, ”Marks’ visit demonstrates to all Nigerians developers and entrepreneurs that they

have caught the attention of the tech world, and they are capable of succeeding on a truly global level.”

The question now is how to build on Zuckerberg’s visit? With both the visitor  and Ambode well-known as philanthropists there is need for more effective collaborations. For instance, La Roche Leadership Foundation established by Ambode  in 2012 is  a non-profit organisation with the mandate of developing educational and leadership skills of young Nigerians. As the state governor, efforts should be sustained, to strengthen our educational processes based on accessible and affordable information technological processes.

Zuckerberg’s visit is a potential pragmatic  synergy between like minds, to build strong and sustainable socio-economic programmes, processes and projects for the benefit of Lagos and more so our job-seeking youths. That is the dancing steps of  Ambode.

    •Governor’s aide: more projects coming

Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa has handed over reports of the constituency stakeholders’ meeting organised by the House to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for implementation.

The constituency stakeholders’ meeting, second in the series, took place simultaneously in all 40 constituencies.

The reports contained requests and recommendations of the people on how the state would achieve growth.

On Friday during the Executive-Legislative Parley, Obasa told the governor the reports contained wishes and recommendations of the people, urging him to ensure their implementation.

“We decided to feel the pulse of our people through the constituency stakeholders’ meeting and what I’m presenting to you today is their aggregate demands and recommendations collated by our field officers, who worked in the 40 constituencies,” the Lagos Assembly Speaker said.

Ambode assured that the contents would form major components of the 2017 budget.

Ambode later handed over the reports to Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget Akinyemi Asade for implementation.

Ambode has a lot in stock for Lagosians, one of his aides said at the weekend.

Senior Special Assistant on Media and Strategy to the Governor, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku, spoke when he hosted a delegation of young professionals in his office at Alausa, the state secretariat

The delegates were led by Mr. Wale Adelakun, an ex-president of the Student Union Governing Council at the Federal University of Technology, Akure.

Ajanaku said:  ”There are over eight thousands federal and state roads scattered across Lagos, with most of the road networks linking the rural areas with the urban areas in deplorable conditions. Fixing these roads is a major part of the people’s demand from the governor during the electioneering campaign.”

He said Ambode’s response has been immediate and impressive, as he embarked on the construction of two roads each in the local governments and the local council development areas.

Ajanaku said more projects were coming for the benefit of residents.

He added that “the decision of the government to embark on the demolition of shanties and criminal hide-outs in recent times is in line with the vision of the government to develop Lagos to a mega city status”.

Ambode plans monthly payment on LagosHOMS

    •More houses coming soon

Lagos State plans to introduce monthly payments on its Home Ownership Mortgage Schemes, popularly called Lagos HOMS, in a bid to cushion the effects of the recession.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who said this after an extensive inspection of projects, said his administration decided to scale up the rent-to-own policy by introducing a monthly payment plan.

According to him,  people can pay monthly instead of being compelled to make a down payment of 30 per cent or one year.

He said: “We believe strongly that people should be able to pay one month and live in our housing schemes. We don’t think in a recession, we should be having a situation where we allow people to come and buy when they don’t have money or to come and pay one year rent.

“We think the way to move forward is to allow these our younger ones to just pay one month deposit and pay one month rent and move into the houses and then more or less play up our rent-to-own scheme.”

Ambode said the government took time to review its mortgage schemes vis-à-vis its financial flow, adding that many housing schemes have reached advanced stages of completion, and that they would be rolled out soon.

The governor, who inspected the Illubirin Housing Scheme on Lagos Island, said government, in partnership with the private sector, was making arrangement to transform the scheme into a live, work and play environment.

“In addition, the other housing projects that we are doing are on course and I want to assure Lagosians that in the next few months, we will be seeing a lot of housing units,” the governor said.

Commissioner for Housing Gbolahan Lawal debunked insinuations that the Illubirin Housing Scheme was abandoned, saying government is improving on the project, which is sitting on 28 hectares.

Ambode also inspected the construction of a lay-by and slip road into Isheri Olowora at Berger.

  • Kidnappers use shanties, says Ambode

    Kidnappers use shanties, says Ambode

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday said the kidnappers of pupils and teachers of the Model College, Igbonla, Epe use some of the shanties illegally constructed in the city to carry out their nefarious activities.

He promised that the teachers and pupils abducted last Thursday would soon  be rescued.

Ambode said his administration would soon commence a review of its laws to curb and effectively punish perpetrators of such act.

Speaking shortly after carrying out an extensive inspection of projects across the state, Ambode issued a seven-day ultimatum for all illegal structures on the state’s waterfront to be demolished, urging occupants to vacate immediately.

Speaking at the Ilubirin Housing Scheme on the Lagos Island, the governor, who was irked by the erection of several shanties and structures within the premises and especially on the waterfront, said his government would not condone such activities.

He said kidnappers and criminal-minded persons often seek refuge in such shanties close to the waterfront, from where they perpetrate their heinous crimes and then make use of the waterways to ferry their victims to another location, in most cases to another state.

Ambode said: “I also want to use this opportunity to appeal to all those living in the shanties around these schemes especially on the waterfront illegally that they should vacate the areas forthwith.

“You will see that most of the issues that we have with kidnappings are actually being brought up by those who are illegal settlers by the waterfront. We will commence demolition of all the shanties around the creeks in Lagos State and also around our waterways in the next seven days. I have given directives to that effect to the appropriate agencies.

“The safety of our children and all Lagosians is paramount in this administration. We will not allow a few set of people who come into Lagos and stay on our waterfront illegally and then use it as opportunity to kidnap our people. I also want to assure our people that government is seriously on the issue of the children and the teachers that were kidnapped in the Igbonla Model College and very soon, we will get the victims back.

“I believe that the era of kidnapping has come to an end. We are going to review our laws and I can tell you sincerely that we will deal with kidnappers squarely in Lagos from this moment onwards. We will review our laws and make sure that there is no room for kidnappers in this State.”

Ambode, who also spoke on the plans to continue construction of the Ilubirin Housing Scheme, said that his administration has taken time to review its mortgage scheme vis-à-vis its financial flow, adding that the Ilubirin axis would be designed as live, work and play environment under a private sector initiative.

The governor said: “In addition to that, the other housing projects that we are doing are on course and I want to assure Lagosians that in the next few months, we will be seeing a whole lot of housing units being rolled out. We believe strongly that people should be able to pay one month rent and live in our housing schemes.

“We don’t think in a recession, we should be having a situation where we allow people to come and buy when they don’t have money or to come and pay one year rent. We think the way to move forward is to allow these our younger ones to just pay one month deposit and pay one month rent and move into the houses and then more or less play up our rent-to-own scheme.”

Housing Commissioner Gbolahan Lawal debunked insinuation that the Ilubirin Housing Scheme project had been abandoned, saying that the initial design to accommodate 1260 families, has been remodeled to 500 housing units.

He said that the government, in collaboration with a private investor which is investing about $500 million into the scheme, has perfected plans to make the scheme a live, play and work environment.

Ambode, accompanied by members of the State Executive Council also inspected the Federal Government Guest House in Marina which has been handed over to the state government and the ongoing upgrade of the Bus Terminal at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) on Lagos Island.
