Ambode gives contractor December deadline on road projects

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has ordered contractors working on multi-faceted expansion projects at the ever busy Berger Bus Stop on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to work day and night to ensure completion by December.

He spoke at the weekend when he carried out extensive  inspection of on-going projects across the state.

The governor said the directive became imperative in view of the strategic importance of the axis being the major gateway to the state.

The expansion projects at Berger include the construction of about 700 metres slip road through which traffic outward Lagos-Ibadan Expressway can connect Omole Phase Two, Magodo Phase One and Olowoora.

The road, which was designed with drainage channels, sidewalks and street light, is about six metres wide and can conveniently accommodate two vehicles at a time.

Apart from the pedestrian bridge, which has been completed, there are also expanded lay-bys and reservation areas at both sides of the Berger Bus Stop to facilitate easy pulling off of commercial and private vehicles from the main expressway.

Massive road improvement, construction of lay-by and reservation projects are equally on-going under the bridge.

Ambode, who was accompanied by his top officials, also ordered the construction of iron barricade under the newly completed pedestrian bridge to compel usage so as to achieve its main purpose of saving lives and facilitating free flow of traffic.

Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure Ganiyu Johnson, who briefed the governor on the work done so far on the Berger projects, said the projects, upon completion, will give Berger a new befitting look and ensure permanent removal of gridlock hitherto associated with the area.

“The idea is that we should have a reservation area for our commercial buses and also a reservation area on top. In the phase one of it, we have on both sides about 200 metres of reservation area. For instance, vehicles coming from upland and wanting to discharge passengers have been accommodated as we have cleared the road further down and we have about three to four base underneath the bridge.

“We have also improved Wakati Adura, Ijaye Road and Isheri Road in such a way that there will not be any traffic gridlock anymore by the time we complete this project and there will be a free flow of traffic around the whole place. We are also moving the roundabout at PWC forward a little bit to Wakati Adura area and channelise the place just to improve traffic flow,” Johnson said.

The governor also inspected the newly completed lay-by at Car Wash Bus Stop in Oworonsoki, which made it a total of four modern lay-bys constructed in Oworonsoki axis by the Ambode administration.

Ambode inspected the on-going construction of 1.65-kilometre slip road from Olopomeji in Oworonsoki to Ifako with under pass through which vehicles can make U-turn back to either Lagos Island or Oshodi through Gbagada and others.

    Ambode names school after Ajomale

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has named Olokun Primary School, Ilasamaja in Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) after the state’s All Progressives Congress (APC) party Chairman Otunba Henry Ajomale.

The event was attended by party faithful, monarchs, community leaders and government officials.

Ajomale, The Nation learnt, built a block of six classrooms and donated it to the government in 2015.

It was commissioned by former Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola.

An elated Ajomale thanked the governor for honouring him while he’s still alive.

Such initiative like this, he said, is done after the demise of an individual, but “to have considered me worthy of this gesture while I am still alive, is a great gift from the government. I am also very grateful to the people of Ilasamaja. It is an edifice that would live after me.

“The situation in the school was very pathetic; hence I decided to give it a facelift to rival any private school. I am happy to hear the head teacher saying the children’s results have improved greatly.”

He promised to equip the school with computer systems so that the pupils can match their peers in any private school.

Chief Ajomale called on well-meaning Nigerians to take interest in assisting school pupils.

“We cannot leave everything for government, individuals, groups and corporate bodies need to come on board to ensure brighter future for our children,” he said.

The council’s Sole Administrator, Ms Abimbola Oshikoya, said Ajomale deserved the honour.

She promised that the council would maintain the infrastructure in the school and appeal to individuals to invest in children’s education.

He described Ajomale as a wonderful and nice person.

“I am really proud of him and happy to associate with him,” he said.

The school Head Teacher, Mrs Rabiat Adebayo, said the pupils now concentrate more on their studies and are learning very fast.

“Come during the school hour, you will see the children learning in a conducive atmosphere. They are happy to be in the new block. With my dedicated teachers, we can boast of good results”, she said.

  • Residents laud Ambode over road construction

Residents of Alhaji Idowu Street, Akowonjo, have hailed the Lagos State Government for the rehabilitation of their roads and the provision of street lights.

They are elated that after 35 years of total abandonment which left the area in deplorable condition, the government has was repairing the roads with interlocking stones.

According to them, Alhaji Idowu Oke and Lambe Kudaisi streets were usually submerged in by flood during rainy season. Once it rained, residents had a lot to worry about as properties were usually damaged and sometimes, little school children got swept away by flood.

A resident, Alhaji Moshood Idowu whom the street is named after said: “We want to thank Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for giving us a lifetime gift. The road was so terrible. We could not cross from some point to the other. We have called on all our community leaders to cooperate with the government so that Lagos State will continue to excel.

“What the government has done here is a mega road in a mega city for a mega community. Luckily, we also have a Nigerian who has the interest of the people at heart as well as the contractor, Bashaul Construction Company. What he has done here is a world-class engineering work. In fact he has given us additional construction which is not part of his contract.”

  • Ambode’s inspiring possibilities

    Ambode’s inspiring possibilities

THE innovative voyage embarked upon by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode at the Oworonsoki bus stop has no doubt mitigated the debilitating traffic snarl and incidental crime of yore that transcends Lagos Island to the mainland. Curiously too, it has raised the question regarding whether a single innovation can give satisfactory answers to a myriad of multi-faceted traffic and incidental problems confronting Lagosians?

With Ambode, an innovative administrator and manager whose career has been defined by the acclaimed ability to think outside the proverbial box at the helm of affairs, the answer is a resounding ‘yes’.

To start with, when Ambode assumed office in 2015, quite a few impatient political watchers and inhabitants of Lagos State underestimated his. But with time, the amiable and self-effacing governor of Lagos State steadily showed that despite his slow and steady start, he might readily surpass the limit set by the state’s superlative governors since 1999. To the joy of many, he has, so far, exceeded expectations. Without doubt, he has proved his detractors wrong and has validated the confidence reposed in him by the citizens of Lagos State and the Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The exploit of the current henchman of the centre of excellence is legendary: From the repositioning of the state government’s policy to meet up with the pursuit of result-oriented governance; to eventual reordering of the huge debts he met on resumption and having purposeful grip on state finances; down to transformation of the emergency services that has now become efficiently responsive, akin only to others like it in developed climes. The current Lagos governor of compassion has times without number exhibited his milk of kindness to pensioners and staff in the employ of the state government.

Apart from ensuring that the staff of the state government get salary by the 21st of every month at this excruciating period when most of the states across the federation are owed arrears of salary; he has gone further by not only assuring pensioners in the state of their pensions but making sure that a large chunk is provided to pay them at a time their counterparts in other states are not being paid at all. Indeed, the welfare of people around him in the state is of paramount significance to this amiable governor. Pensions are given undiluted prioritization in Lagos state to the admiration of all. Thanks to this humane governor that is doing everything to increase the revenue base of Lagos State.

Another passion that makes Ambode distinct is his unrelenting and unprecedented passion to bring in foreign investors into the state. And his realisation of the need to create a safe environment was responsible for his result-yielding repositioning and massive funding of operations of the security outfits in the state. This is meant to guarantee the safety of lives and property. Surprisingly too, his interventions in especially the area of roads construction and maintenance in record time have gone a long way in tackling obnoxious traffic gridlock in all parts of the state.

This is commendable in view of the limited resources at his disposal. Ambode has gone far flung in reviving amongst others public primary education, public health services not to talk of his unwavering crusading for social justice issues most especially on domestic and sexual violence. Indeed, the Ambode-led Lagos State government has shown the entire country how prudence and strategic thinking can bring about acceptable results in the face of daunting challenges.

But perhaps more marvelous and impressive than the adumbrated list of achievements above is the recent innovations embarked on by the governor at the Oworonsoki Bus-Stop end of the 3rd Mainland Bridge. The area that had become synonymous with traffic bottleneck, traffic-time robberies and intense stress has now become something joyous according pleasure drive- thanks to the out-of-the-box solution consisting of iron fencing and the relocation of the traffic-inducing bus-stop at a nearby purpose built facility.

The ingenuity in this is that, while a causal observer might be tempted to think that the intervention at the Oworonsoki Bus-Stop was only traffic-centered, road users are now beginning to appreciate that the nature of the intervention was indeed designed to solve many problems at the same time in a most cost-efficient manner.

In the first place, average rate of fuel usage by motorists has been noticeably reduced. In a 2008 published research carried out in Germany, scientific exercise led to the conclusion that the fuel consumption of vehicular traffic on a given road section depends strongly on the velocity profiles of the vehicles and the researchers specifically found that traffic congestion typically leads to an increase of fuel consumption in the order of 80 per cent.

In this era of market-rate pump price of petrol, Lagosians are grateful. While the savings on fuel usage is laudable, one must also note that the savings have multiplier effects of their own: lower fuel usage will translate to more cash savings and, those cash savings, when banked and aggregated, could translate into funds available for lending for developmental purposes.

There is also the positive effect on the environment. The innovative intervention by Ambode at the Oworonsoki Bus Stop having reduced traffic congestion has also reduced the concentration of carbon dioxide emissions in that area and in all areas that have witnessed a reduction in traffic congestion consequent upon similar interventions by the governor. Of course, carbon dioxide has been shown to be the main pollutant warming our planet and the alarming negative effects of environmental warming are well documented.

Closely related to the above is the beneficial effect of the Oworonsoki Bus- Stop intervention on the health of road users. From saving road users from concentrated carbon dioxide inhalation to reducing the physical, mental and emotional stress associated with traffic congestion, this intervention has a pleasant effect on the health of Lagosians. Repeated exposure to carbon dioxide has been identified as a possible cause of lung cancer while the inconvenience, physical discomfort and consistent sedentary posture forced by traffic build up could aid the lifestyle habits that have been proven to occasion strokes and heart attacks. Indeed, a professor of medicine and Chief of Cardiology at the University of California, San Francisco, David Waters, is reported to have observed that more Nigerians are dying and developing stroke because of the long hours they spend in traffic.

Now, Lagos State has always been and remains Nigeria’s economic focal point, generating a significant portion of the country’s Gross Domestic Product. Most commercial and financial business activities are carried out in the central business district situated on the island where most of the country’s commercial banks and financial institutions and major corporations are headquartered. It is thus clear as daylight that the intervention at the Oworonsoki Bus Stop will further fulfill Lagos State’s metamorphosis in to a dream mega-city.

The promotion of commerce and the ease of doing and transacting business is a legitimate expectation of taxpayers from the government of Lagos State. The innovative intervention by Governor Ambode at the Oworonsoki Bus Stop has met that expectation. Traffic time has been cut by almost half and the prospect of making multiple trips to the Island from the mainland is no longer dreadful.

One must appropriately note that the foregoing benefits would not have accrued if Ambode had followed the standard traffic congestion solution of deploying more and more traffic control officers to hotspots. That would have amounted to the ‘same old, same old’ approach that only resulted in corruption and inconsistent results at the bus stops.

For instance, by incorporating the construction of the metal fence to his innovative solution, the governor has reduced, if not stopped, the recurring incidences of traffic-time robberies. With the fence in place, robbers will have to think more than twice before engaging in their nefarious acts because the chances of escape have been reduced to virtually nil.

In the same way, passengers of commercial buses no longer have a reason to pressurize drivers to stop at places not designated as bus stops because the fence has removed any mileage to be gained by so doing.

It is for these reasons that one is compelled to extol the gratifying efforts of Ambode and what to expect from him in the future despite the prevailing economically challenging time. May Ambode never get tired of moving Lagos Forward-Amen.

WHY WE’RE PARTNERING AFRIMA, BY AMBODE

THE suspense was finally over, Monday, when Lagos was announced as the official city for the hosting of this year’s edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA).

Three other states, including Cross River, Rivers and Akwa Ibom had bided for the hosting right which was announced at the Protea Hotel, GRA, Lagos, at a press conference that had several artistes, music promoters and officials of the African Union Commission (AUC), a key partner of the award scheme.

Incidentally, AFRIMA, which is gearing up for its third edition, had its two previous editions in Lagos.

Declaring Lagos as the official city to host the show, AUC’s Head of Culture, Ms. Angela Martins posited that taking a decision on the Centre of Excellence was a herculean task because all the cities targeted were equal to the task in terms of infrastructure, tourism potential and richness of culture but that Lagos State has an edge in key areas.

According to Martins, the African Union was pushing forward its developmental agenda and policies through the AFRIMA platform.

Giving the acceptance speech on behalf of Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode were the State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde and Special Adviser to the Governor on Culture, Mrs. Adebimpe Akinsola.

In his speech, Governor Ambode who was delighted the award will take place in Lagos, promised that the state would not only throw its weight behind AFRIMA, but also provide facilities and infrastructure to make AFRIMA 2016 a success.

Explaining why Lagos would support the show, Governor Ambode said African Union’s vision aligns with that of Lagos State.  “The reason why Lagos State is partnering with AFRIMA should not be far-fetched. More importantly, the vision of AFRIMA is a veritable platform to celebrate the best of talents in African music industry which aligns with the vision of the African Union to foster peace, unity and development through cultural expressions and creative enterprise.”

Continuing, Ambode said, “These values are also in sync with the Lagos State vision of being an undeniable entertainment capital of Africa, as well as being the hub of creative expressions in the continent. The aim is to open up the state for performing arts to blossom and we are ready to partner with credible organizations to ensure that Lagos remains the destination of choice for arts and entertainment, for artistes and for those who make the business of arts to thrive.”

The governor who later received the AFRIMA delegation at the Government House, Alausa, reiterated his promises for the award.

The third edition of AFRIMA has been scheduled for November 4-6, 2016.

Obasanjo, Ambode, others advise media on Nigeria’s unity

•NUJ President urges Buhari to save economy

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged the mass media to put national unity first above sensationalism to avoid plunging the country into a major crisis of the type witnessed in Rwanda in1994.

In the early year of 1994, the rival Hutu majority in Rwanda killed about 800,000 people, mostly of the Tutsi minority, in an ethnic cleansing exercise. Millions of others were displaced.

Obasanjo, who recalled that the “Rwandan genocide” was “triggered” by the press, noted that the nation’s media were not cautious enough.

He said: “Nigeria is increasingly polarised and divided along ethnic lines with the press fanning the embers of division and separation.”

The ex-President made this known while delivering his keynote address at the maiden edition of the National Summit of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

The summit is themed: “The Media and National Unity”, was opened by the host governor, Ibikunle Amosun.

Obasanjo, who was represented at the occasion by the former Executive Secretary of the National University Commission (NUC), Prof. Peter Okebukola, noted that in the last four months, Nigeria had witnessed an average of 20 hotspots, which almost pushed the country to the precipice.

He singled out the Niger Delta Avengers in the Southsouth, Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast and herdsmen-farmers’ clashes across the geopolitical zones as three issues presenting the greatest potentials for national disintegration.

The former President, who dumped partisan politics to become an elder statesman, said the time has come for the citizenry to start asking how the country arrived at its precarious situation and the feasible way out.

He said save for the civil war, at no time in the nation’s history has Nigeria being so fractured than in recent years.

According to him, his immediate concern is for the press not to allow itself to be used as a “wedge” for separation but to be an “adhesive for bridging the gaps.”

Also, Amosun challenged media practitioners to work towards the unity and cohesion of the country.

The governor said: “It is imperative that journalists as professionals should always be on their guard against forces that seek to take advantage of the formidable power of the profession for their selfish ends.”

According to him, “it has even become more important that the profession divests itself of partisanship, ensure objectivity in its reportage and inculcate investigative journalism if it desires to continue to remain relevant.”

For Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who was represented by the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello, the media must discharge their watchdog roles with great sense of responsibility and patriotism.

He urged media executives and professionals to always put national unity and security above personal considerations in line with established ethics and ethos of news reportage.

Ambode urged the media to “champion the cause of ensuring that crime and criminality by anybody are reported without prejudice to any ethnic group and religious belief.”

NUJ National President Abdulwaheed Odusile called on President Muhammadu Buhari to revive the nation’s economy.

Odusile said “Nigerians are suffering” and urged Buhari to devote more time towards reviving the economy and save Nigerians from further pains.

He enjoined all tiers of governments to create a conducive environment for jobs creation so that the burgeoning crowd of unemployed Nigerians could be gainfully employed.

Justifying the summit, the NUJ President said it was an opportunity to discuss national issues.

He said: “There is no better time than now because more than never before, Nigeria’s unity is being threatened” by many forces.

He identified the militant groups in the Niger Delta, separatist movement in the Southeast and the terrorists across the Northeast as voices threatening fabrics of Nigeria’s existence.

According to him, “Nigerian media cannot just afford to keep quiet and watch as agents of destruction attempt daily to the tear the country apart.”

In attendance at the opening ceremony were the Iyalode of Yorubaland, Chief (Mrs.) Alaba Lawson and hundreds of media practitioners.

  • Provide parking space, NURTW chief urges Ambode

The Deputy Chairman, Ojota branch ‘C’ of Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Rasheed Oyebola has called on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to provide parking space for transporters under his union who were ordered to vacate the Ojodu/Berger Motor Park. He said the seven-days notice given to them was inadequate.

The union chief urged the government to provide enough parking spaces that will be accessible to passengers.

He, however, stated that non-availability of Motor Parks at Ojodu/Berger has continually caused hardship to their drivers, union members and passengers who resort to parking by the roadside in order to load their passengers.
