Ambode vows to tackle militants, vandals

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday renewed his administration’s commitment to flush out militants and pipeline vandals threatening the peace of the state.

Speaking while receiving the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr Idris Kpotun Ibrahim, at the Lagos House, Ikeja, said the government will not relent in its effort to tackle all forms of criminal activities.

Ambode said the recent military raids on the hideout of criminal elements has yielded positive result, assuring that all efforts would be made to sustain the success recorded so far.

He said: “I want to commend the Nigeria Police and other security agencies on the fight against a militants and vandals in the last one week. Again, we need to sustain and ensure that these people do not go back to the creeks. “On our part, we are going to do whatever it takes to take the militants and vandals off Lagos. If it means shutting down some locations where they seem to be hibernating in terms of any commercial trade, we would do it and make sure that we guarantee the lives of our people.”

Ambode appealed for more police presence to secure the lives and property of the over 22 Lagos million population.

“I want to thank you for visiting Lagos. You’ve worked in Lagos before. The Lagos of then and the Lagos of now is totally different, the population in Lagos is over 22 million and then the land space is not increasing, so the number of police officers that we have in regards to population is very meagre. So as you recruit policemen, we appeal that more police officers be deployed to Lagos, we have space for them, we can build more police stations and we can equip them effectively,” he told the Acting IGP.

Ambode also requested for more police patrol of the waterways, assuring that his administration would play its own part by ensuring the welfare of officers in the line of duty.

“We also want to say that we have reduced crime in Lagos by 70 per cent in the last six months, but again, some ugly points are coming out along our waterways. We want to partner with you to keep our waterways safe, we need a greater presence of marine police across our waters and we also know that we can support them by providing gun boats, but again we want to say that we would take proper care of welfare of police officers who are assigned to Lagos,” he said.

Earlier, Ibrahim who said he was in Lagos to visit some police formations and appraise recent operations in conjunction with other security outfits, commended the State Government’s support and cooperation to the police and other security agencies in recent time, saying that the synergy between security agencies and the Lagos State Government was worth emulating.

He also lauded the state government for setting up a Security Trust Fund to aid the fight against crime, saying that other states should emulate the model.

  • ‘Ndigbo not aware of town hall meeting with Ambode’

‘Ndigbo not aware of town hall meeting with Ambode’

The Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State, Christian Uchechu-kwu Nwachukwu has warned Ndigbo not to engage in activities that would bring them to disrepute. He also advised them not to involve Governor Akinwunmi Ambode in any activity that is intended to deceive Ndigbo, Lagos State government and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Eze Nwachukwu gave the advice at the Lagos State Igbo Community Centre, Okota Lagos while addressing reporters on the purported hosting of Ndigbo by Governor Ambode tomorrow.

Reacting to a report published on page 46 of July 29 edition of The Sun Newspaper entitled: “Ambode hosts Ndigbo”, Eze Nwachukwu said Governor Ambode would not host Ndigbo in a town hall meeting without informing him to mobilise his people in his capacity as the recognised Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State.

He said: “The story is not genuine, it is unfortunate as well as deceitful. I advise my Igbo communities in Lagos State to be alert and wary of this fake information aimed at deceiving Ndigbo and the host state.”

He noted that “it might be a mischievous Igbo group that wants to use the name of Ndigbo and Governor Ambode to deceive the government and party. If government and party want to organise such huge and beneficial event, majority of Igbo stakeholders would be aware of it and government itself would be aware of it.

“Contacts made to the governor’s office indicate that his office is not aware of the planned hosting of Ndigbo tomorrow.

“Government should be wary of these infamous people, who want to take advantage of their positions to reap where they did not sow.”

He advised Ndigbo in positions of authority in APC and government to be careful, saying the present era is that of change to better ways of doing things.

“Our people should jettison all manner of behaviours that bring bad name to them because we are in a dispensation in which sincerity, honesty and credibility characterise governance. For a person or group of persons to decide to deceive the current APC-led government in Lagos State is quite unfortunate.

Ndigbo should disregard the dubious call for town hall meeting which the governor is not aware. If there is any town hall meeting between the Governor and Ndigbo, we will be aware of it and then disseminate information to stakeholders in the 57 council areas; because we would want to hear from the governor whose policies and programmes have impacted positively on the lives of indigenes and non-indigenes, especially Ndigbo.

“It is the duty of the office of Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State to inform Ndigbo  about such important event were there any. It is not Ambode’s style to call Ndigbo to a town hall meeting without going through the appropriate channel. He knows there is Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State whose office could be contacted to mobilise his people for such an important meeting with him.

“Since there is no information to my office and no invitation extended to Igbo stakeholders, it indicates that the purported town hall meeting is a scam,” he said.

Also speaking, the immediate past Special Adviser on Transportation to Ojo Local Government Area, Mr Smart Onyia said he was not aware of such event. He also said contacts made to officials of the state and local governments revealed that neither the Lagos State government nor Ndigbo has such plan for a town hall meeting with Governor Ambode tomorrow.

Mr Onyia, who is the state Chairman of Igbo Mandate Group in APC, advised Ndigbo in Lagos to be careful of such phony plan by some self-serving individuals who want to use the name Ndigbo to achieve their selfish interests. He described the purported town hall meeting with Ambode as a scam.

He said: “The leadership of Ndigbo in APC Lagos State is unaware of any town hall meeting. There is hierarchy in the leadership of Ndigbo in Lagos. Christian Nwachukwu, who is the recognised Eze Ndigbo in Lagos State, is not aware of the so-called town hall meeting with Governor Ambode tomorrow as reported in The Sun Newspaper.

“We are dissociating ourselves from such event because it has not received the blessing of the leadership of Ndigbo in Lagos.

“I advise right-thinking Igbo man or woman in Lagos State not to attend the meeting tomorrow. We believe those behind such plan

are not sincere and honest. They want to misguide Ndigbo for their personal interests.

“With every respect, I urge Governor Ambode not to honour the event for the interest of Ndigbo in APC, because the invitation didn’t come from the right source. He and the National Leader of APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu should inquire if the leadership of Ndigbo, especially the Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State, is involved or carried along.

“It is not Ndigbo that are organising the purported town hall meeting. Ndigbo have institution and hierarchy beginning from Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State to the leadership of other groups of Ndigbo that include Igbo Mandate in APC and Igbo Political Coalition, among others.

Such bodies were not contacted. Therefore, tomorrow’s event is not a project of Ndigbo.

Some individuals who want to feather their nests are behind the phony town hall meeting.

“The Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Lagos State is not aware of the planned town hall meeting. If it is aware, it would have communicated us. I as the State Chairman of Igbo Mandate in APC has not been informed about such meeting.”

Dangote refinery will address fuel scarcity – Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, on Tuesday said the refinery project being developed at the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) by President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, would address the perennial fuel scarcity problem in Nigeria and West Africa.

Ambode, who spoke during an inspection tour of the refinery by the Togolese President, Mr. Faure Gnassingbe, expressed optimism that the project would positively change the face of oil and gas business in West Africa.

He said the project, which is the largest single line refinery in the world, was a testament to Lagos status as prime investment destination that has gained investors’ confidence over the years.

He said, “This investment is one of the biggest in Africa today and will have a huge impact on the economy of not only Nigeria but the whole of West African sub-region.

“This refinery, when completed, will be the largest single line refinery anywhere in the world refining 650,000 barrels of crude oil daily.  Apart from creating jobs, this refinery will contribute immensely to solving the fuel supply challenge in the West African region.”

Ambode also commended the pace of work on the project, saying huge progress had been made by contractors handling the refinery.

He also saluted the doggedness and unwavering desire of Alhaji Dangote to contribute positively to the growth of the Nigerian economy and his confidence in the Lagos economy.

  • Buhari, Aregbesola, Ambode, others hail The Nation at 10

Buhari, Aregbesola, Ambode, others hail The Nation at 10

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday led the way in wishing The Nation well at 10. The Nation, Nigeria’s widest circulating newspaper, clocked 10 yesterday.

“Ten years is a milestone in the life of any organisation”, the President said in his message.

There will be a service today at the firm’s corporate office in Matori, Lagos, to mark the milestone.

Governors Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos), Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Kashim Shettima (Borno), Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom) and former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola also sent goodwill messages.

Fashola urged the newspaper to continue the “pursuit of the truth” and remain the nation’s compass and gold standard “if she must remain a relevant competitor in the conventional media space and a force to be reckoned with”.

To Ambode, The Nation has redefined the scope and shape of Nigeria’s media industry.

He said: “The newspaper has not only carved a niche for itself, it has in the past decade, been in the forefront of shaping public discourse, through its robust editorial contents, spearheading major news breaks through its exclusive reportage and controlling narratives through its array of foremost columnists.

“Despite its emergence at a time the media industry was facing a lot of challenges, The Nation Newspaper through consistent, vibrant and pragmatic management of news and human resources, has remained steadfast to its mission and vision.”

Aregbesola said The Nation gave journalism “a refreshingly new breath”.

“The birth of The Nation with an unusually panoramic editorial spread gives Journalism in Africa a refreshingly new breath. Democracy, humanity have been meritoriously served by this newspaper,” he said.

Tambuwal said The Nation in its first decade of existence has “influenced many aspects of our social, economic and political life. From business and economy to sports, security, politics and entertainment, the newspaper has made critical interventions that have shaped public policy and influenced the actions of those in authority”.

Shettima said The Nation was welcomed because of its “array of talented journalists, writers and media administrators”.

The newspaper, he said, has not disappointed him.

“It is a clear leader in news; it carries very forthright and pungent editorials and it has in its stable some of the most informed commentators and columnists of the day. And the fact that it is available all over the country as one of the earliest sources of news, views and analyses, has endeared it to the Nigerian reading public. That is indeed a testimony to the organisational abilities of its entire team of administrators, journalists and other key support personnel. For us in Borno, the fact that we could reach you early in the morning everyday, has endeared your titles to us. The Nation newspapers help us to connect with the news, views, even the day-to-day stories of ordinary citizens in all corners of Nigeria, creating livelihoods, forging friendships or even arguing, thus helping to shape our collective destiny as a people while underlining the inter connectedness of our humanity,” Shettima said.

Emmanuel said The Nation “has re-defined journalism and uplifted the image of its practitioners as opinion moulders and the guardians of our national trust and ethos”.

He said the newspaper has been dispassionate and objective in its treatment of news and features and, has refused “to use your pages to traffic in incendiary and un-sanitised reportage”.

The governor urged the newspaper to maintain the standard and continue to beam the searchlight on issues that “bind us as a nation rather than those that divide us”.

  • Ambode’s loans

All things being equal, the Lagos State government will from September, commence disbursement of N6.25 billion as loans to interested unemployed youths in the state.

The fund according to the commissioner for Wealth Creation, BabatundeDurosinmi-Etti is to assist unemployed Lagosians to create wealthby setting up businesses of their own. And it is meant for everybody including artisans and traders.

He said the creation of his ministry was on account of the huge number of unemployed youths in Lagos state and that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had directed the fund to be made available to ‘everybody’. Consequently, interested individuals and groups have been advised to organize themselves for easy accessibility to the fund.

Given the dire economic situation in the country and the high unemployment rate especially among the youths, the proposal by the Lagos State government to make some funds available to unemployed youths to set up their own businesses is very visionary and therefore worthy of commendation. It recognizes the problems in the continued harbouring of a large army of youths with no visible means of livelihood and the potent danger it poses for the peace and orderly conduct of the society.

By making available the loans to the youths to set up their businesses, the government would have kept them busy as gainful partners in wealth creation, while at the same time obviating those ills associated with joblessness. It is therefore a worthy intervention to add value to human capital by making them worthy citizens. The larger benefits to society are enormous.

Though details of the modus operandi of the fund are yet to be made public, there is no doubt that if properly managed, it will go a long way to create jobs for the army of the unemployed youths who daily roam the streets for lack of gainful unemployment. This will not only rob off very positively on the reduction of the sundry crimes that have come to buffet our urban centres but diffuse the potent threat to national stability which the subsisting situation portends.

The Lagos State government is therefore on the right track for coming to terms with the reality that given its cosmopolitan nature with a burgeoning population, some form of direct intervention to have the youths engaged is a sine qua non for peace and stability of the state.

Yet, as commendable as the project is, adequate care must be taken to ensure that the overall objective is neither defeated nor circumscribed by actions or inactions either on the side of prospective beneficiaries or those to be charged with its implementation. We say this because of the tendency for the fund to be sabotaged by the observed penchant of the average Nigerian to see such loans as free funds to service conspicuous consumption.

Since the fund is said to be for all those who apply, it is only to be expected that the number of applicants will far outstrip whatever is available for disbursement.Yet, it is still a good beginning. What needs to be done is for the state government to come up with fool-proof criteria for authenticating the identity and other information to be supplied by prospective beneficiaries.

In a clime where data on individuals is hard to come by, there is the need to work very closely with traditional institutions, market associations and the like to stand as guarantee for applicants. Also very relevant is the need to verify and monitor the kind of businesses the loans are to be deployed.

It was in an apparent move to check these sources of abuse that the government warned that those who will supply false names and wrong addresses or divert the loans to frivolous activities such as weddings would be made to face the law. That is the way to go otherwise the good idea may be defeated by some of our ruinous dispositions and attitudes to anything that is of the civic realm.

No doubt, there is the urgency to get the youths engaged through such intervention loans if we are serious in reducing the debilitating unemployment rate in the country. With the daily laying off of workers on account of the technical recession which our economic managers have admitted, governments both federal and state must seek out other alternatives of aiding the unemployed to engage in some form of self-employment. That will also involve conscious and concerted efforts to provide such supportive infrastructures as power, water, durable roads among others. At present, the current state of these social infrastructures is a serious disincentive to investment.

Ours is a county where many are qualified to work and are prepared to work. Yet they cannot find any work to do. That is the irony of our situation. And we can continue with such a foreboding scenario with dire repercussions. The Lagos State government should work with great zeal and focus in determining artisans and traders genuinely intent in improving their fortunes and avail them of the loans.

The initial disbursement of N6.25 billion should serve as a pilot scheme and experiences gathered from its implementation brought to bear in enhancing the overall success of subsequent disbursements. Closely linked to this is the ban on street trading which the state government has moved to enforce. A recent interview by some reporters on why street trading flourishes, highlighted such factors as the poor state of the nation’s economy, spiralling inflation, lack of sufficient capital to start off business, inability to pay for shops that are usually out of the reach of many, among others.

The loans when properly managed and harnessed, will also partly address street trading which was outlawed since 2003 but has not been fully implemented because of the abject poverty in the land and the repercussions of having toexacerbate the situation. It was in an apparent realization of the yawning gap between the ban and the material conditions of the people that reservations have been made on its full implementation now.

The government appears not unmindful of these reservationsas it has gone ahead to engage the public on the evils of patronizing street hawkers. The state Commissioner of Police, FataiOwoseni took up the challenge to sensitize the public on the dangers inherent in patronizing these street hawkers when he recently addressed the media.

After enumerating the dangers associated with street trading such as robberies, sale of harmful and substandard goods and exposure to accidents, he admitted “We know the mood of the society and we want to balance our enforcement and that is why we are doing a lot of public enlightenment”. He has said it all.

Owoseni raised another valid issue when he urged street traders and hawkers to form a formidable front and meet the government to create corner shops for them. That initiative should rather be taken up by the government as it will enhance the overall success of any eventual and full implementation of the ban on street trading.

With the creation of the corner shops that are within the reach of the poor, youths who are lucky to benefit from the loans will have little problem adapting to the competitive business environment. By the same token, traders driven out of the street will find alternative and affordable places to do their business. So the corner shops are two sides of the same coin as they will not only enhance overall success of the utilization of loans but the crusade against street trading. Should we wait any longer to have them on stream?

Ambode pledges speedy completion of Eko Atlantic City project

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday carried out an extensive tour of the Eko Atlantic City Project, pledging his government’s support to see the project to speedy completion.

The governor was confident that the initiative would boost the state economy and increase its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), when the city takes off in the next 18 months.

Ambode, who was accompanied on the tour by members of his cabinet, said: “I would like to express the total support of this government to this project because at the end of the day, we need to grow the economy of Lagos and this obviously is going to have multiplier effect on our IGR.

“We promise that we are going to grow our IGR to N30 billion by 2017 and N50 billion by 2018 and this project is a sure outlet in achieving that goal,” he said.

He expressed satisfaction on the infrastructure already put in place, saying that investors can now take advantage of the investment opportunities.

Hailing the promoters of the EAC Project for their confidence in committing huge resources to the Nigerian economy, Ambode said their investment was a positive sign that Nigeria remains the investment hub in Africa.

He said: “Notwithstanding the economic recession that has befallen the country right now, we have come to also show that outside the recession, there is a whole lot of progress going on in the investment climate in Lagos State.

“We are very happy that the signs are looking very good for investment in Lagos. We are also very happy that we are doing everything possible to encourage investors to come into the state and I like to assure that we are committed to make this project a big success.”

Ambode, who also inspected the 8.5-kilometre long shoreline wall, otherwise known as the “Great Wall of Lagos”, built to protect the EAC, said it was gratifying that the project would not only protect the new city, but also protect the whole of Victoria Island against any ocean surge, which was one of the primary reasons for the project.

Chairman of Eko Atlantic City Mr. Ronald Chagoury said one of the first two residential buildings in the new city would be completed by the end of August.

The second residential building, he said, will be ready before the end of the year, adding that the first office block will be ready between September and October.

Poll rates Ambode as top performing governor

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is leading other governors in the poll organised by the African Leadership Magazine to determine Nigeria’s top performing governor, it was learnt yesterday.

The poll, tagged: “Good Governance Polls for Nigeria’s Top Performing Governor”, started two weeks ago with Ambode maintaining the lead with increased 36.1 per cent of the total vote casts.

Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano is closely trailing Ambode with 25 per cent.

The poll, according to its organisers, was designed by the group as part of its strategic engagement tool to monitor performance and gauge the mood of the electorate in Nigeria.

An overwhelming 35 per cent popularity rating for the Lagos State Governor, among other governors, shows his popularity as he continues to deliver good governance, promoting infrastructural development and people-centred policies that better the lives of the people of Lagos.

Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun is in the third place with 8.8 per cent. Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike is in the fourth position with 7.9 per cent of the total vote casts.

Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai sits in the fifth position with five percent.

Voting is still ongoing and is expected to close in the next four days.

He said: “This is a new and a bigger version of Victoria Island. We are going to have an Energy City here, a financial hub that is more or less going to run under a Free Trade Zone and so on.

So far, out of the over 10 million square meters of the project, about six million square meters have been reclaimed, while there are 15 bridges and two tunnels designed with the project.

Earlier, Chairman of Eko Atlantic City, Mr. Ronald Chagoury said one of the first two residential buildings in the new city will be completed by the end of August, while the second will be ready before the end of the year, adding that the first office block will be ready between September and October, 2016.

Chagoury described the project as an impressive financial district which upon completion, would compare with the financial district in Paris, France and the 5th Avenue in New York, United States.

He added that the Great of Lagos was scientifically designed to withstand any ocean surge and that it was built to last for 1, 000 years.

Elders beg Ambode for link bridge

Members of the Elders’ Forum of Ifako-Gbagada community have appealed to Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to build a link bridge that will open up their area to the expressway.

The elders, in a statement, said the troubles of the community would be over if a bridge is built over the canal at Yewande Brown Street, a busy route in the community.

The statement reads: “The linkage shall continue through Yewande Brown Street to Adegbenro Street to enter into the Express road at the already provided entry point with a gate at Ifako bus stop.  When constructed, it shall massively reduce traffic on Ayodele and Diya Street.

“All the people of Soluyi 1 and Soluyi II commute through Ayodele Okeowo where the magnificent headquarter of the Deeper Life Bible Church causes a major traffic bottleneck on worship days. Building the link bridge and opening the entry point, by the gate at Ifako Bus-stop to the Express shall be the needful beginning of rescuing us from the present seeming cul-de-sac,”   Elder I. A Salawu, the Chairman of the Association said.

Applauding Ambode on the various construction projects in various parts of the state, the community pleaded not to be left out.

Tracing the history of the community’s prolonged battle with traffic bottleneck, the elders praised the efforts of the Deeper Life Christian Church to help ease the problem, but maintained that the community would welcome more from the church.

“We really appreciate what the Deeper Life Christian Church has been able to do for us. But, the truth is that we need more and we call on them not to stop the good work they are doing in the community.”

Ambode presents staff of office to Igbogbo monarch

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has presented the staff of office to the new Adeboruwa of Igbogbo in Ikorodu Division of Lagos State, Oba Semiudeen Orimadegun Kasali.

Like a carnival, a procession of the town’s cultural best was on display on Monday.

The residents trooped to the palace to witness the coronation.

Commercial activities were halted. Traders besieged the palace to felicitate with the new monarch.

At exactly 11:30 a.m, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affair, Musiliu Folami, who represented the governor, presented the instruments of office to the monarch. This was greeted with fanfare as residents bowed before the new Adeboruwa.

It is a turning point in the affairs of the town, Oba Kasali said before a tumultuous crowd of residents. He pledged to run an open-door policy, adding that rapid development of his domain would be his priority.

The monarch assured that the residents would not be treated as second-class beings as he would always seek their opinions on matters concerning the town’s development.

Oba Kasali said: “Our plan is to rebrand Igbogbo Kingdom, facilitate rapid socio-economic development, encourage cultural rebirth and improve our traditional status. We will also pursue development of our potential tourist centres and maximise human and material resources for the benefit of the kingdom.”

The monarch expressed appreciation to other aspirants to the stool, saying their interests added colour to the contest.

He extended a hand of fellowship to them to turn the fortunes of the town around.

Oba Kasali said his reign was an act of God, pledging to rule the town with rule of law and justice.

He added: “As an officer in the temple of justice, I will defend the rights of my subjects and seek justice whenever they feel aggrieved on any matter. As custodian of Igbogbo culture and tradition, I am soliciting the support of my subjects to take the town to enviable height.”

Ambode congratulated the monarch for his successful coronation.

The governor urged him to lead with principle of justice and fairness.

He assured the monarch and his subjects of the government’s readiness to work with them to bring more development to the town.

Oba Kasali, a lawyer, was elected from Ijaolu Royal Family of Itun-Nla in Igbogbo. He attended University of Ibadan (UI) for his first degree and got his Master’s from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

He was Chief State Counsel in the Lagos Ministry of Justice before his appointment as Adeboruwa of Igbogbo.
