Nigeria pushing on despite challenges —Ambode

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State yesterday said that against all odds, Nigeria has continued to surmount its challenges due to the commitment of governors and their spouses to addressing issues of governance in their respective States.

Governor Ambode who spoke when he received a delegation of the Southern Governors’ Wives’ Forum (SGWF) on a courtesy visit at the Lagos House, Ikeja, said that the efforts by governors to deliver good governance in their states would not be effective without the complementary role by their wives.

He said the SGWF was an important platform that would afford wives of governors share knowledge and exchange notes on governance which could be beneficial to their people on the long run.

Governor Ambode said: “I want to commend each and every one of your Excellencies for supporting us, we Governors, at least, to be able to create the impact that we are creating. Notwithstanding the fact that these are hard and difficult times, but we are out there still trying as much as possible to create that impact. I must commend you for that supportive role. It is very obvious everywhere that against all odds, we are pushing on and we would succeed.

While pledging his support for the Forum towards their set objectives, Governor Ambode commended Mrs. Aisha Buhari, wife of the President of Nigeria for conceptualizing the SGWF, saying it was a viable avenue for members of the forum to impact on the lives of women and children in their states.

Earlier, wife of the Governor of Imo State and Chairperson of the Forum, Mrs. Nkechi Okorocha said they were in Lagos for the second edition of their quarterly meeting which the state is hosting.

Mrs. Okorocha, on behalf of the forum also congratulated Governor Ambode for his strides in the last one year of his administration, saying that the impact of his government was being felt across the state.

“Let me use this opportunity to congratulate you on behalf of the Southern Governors’ Wives’ Forum on your giant strides towards the massive transformation of Lagos within just one year in office.

“Lagos is indeed our second home, so we can attest to the fact that Your Excellency has done a great job. One begins to wonder what magnitude of development that Lagos would be experiencing during your tenure.”

  • The many strides of Ambode

A year in the life of an administration may not be long enough to recount the huge successes and strides rendered by the man at the helm of affairs.  But in the case of Lagos State, where Akinwunmi Ambode has shown that he is a leader with strong sense of political will, it is easy to glimpse through his numerous strides and landmark achievements within this short period of time.

When he set out barely 12 months ago, many residents did not believe he could do it.  Many people thought he could not muster enough courage and wisdom to steer the affairs of the state towards progress. But like a wizzkid ready to hit the road and grapple with the hurdles on the way, Ambode quickly braced the odds.  Today he has grown from strength to strength; he has proved that he is equal to the task.  He has indeed demonstrated in varied forms that the complications in the state, as it were, are not too mountainous for him to handle.

Today, maximum security is assured in Lagos State.  People no longer feel intimidated by either armed robbers, social miscreants or pick-pockets.  Governor Ambode demonstrated his zeal to quell insecurity in the state when he purchased and handed over security equipment worth over N4.8 billion to the necessary agencies in Lagos.  These included three helicopters with which to survey and monitor security situations in all the corners of the state.

He, like the workman ready to secure his subjects, also gave out 55 Ford Ranger Pick-ups, two gun boats, 15 armoured personnel carriers, 100 saloon cars, 10 Toyota Land Cruiser Vans, 100 power bikes and lots more.  The essence of his gesture was to ensure that no stone was left unturned to secure the state and guarantee lives and property.  And truly, this approach is working, for incessant cases of armed robbery attacks both on private and public establishments have dwindled.  There is relative peace and decorum in Lagos State at the moment.

His effort has yielded the desired results.  Today, he has made so many streets and roads enjoy security lights that people have no choice but to ensure that the state is made to move on.  From Ikorodu to Epe; to Lekki and other places, street lights abound.  They are not only to help illuminate the BRT lanes for easy and safe movements, one of the primary purposes is to give residents the desired confidence to feel a sense of modernity.  After all, this is a mega state where infrastructural provisions should be emulated.  Ambode is keen on keeping the state far ahead of others in terms of social amenities and modern facilities to complement the status of the state.  And within these few months, even his greatest critics and cynics have come to appreciate his determination to take the state higher than he met it.

The traffic headache that almost crippled the state a few months ago, has mysteriously disappeared. When a few months back, the governor himself accosted a traffic offender on a BRT lane, he showed that he was prepared to fight, tooth and nail, to restore decency on the roads.  By re-engineering and re-energising the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), he has been able to ginger them into more action.  This feat has come to make more people eager to move about without stress and with less to worry about when to get to work or home.  Most LASTMA operatives now have renewed and fresher approach to traffic control.  In short, their human relations have improved tremendously that people complain less about their hitherto faceless attitude to their duty.

Checkmating the nauseating Apapa traffic gridlock and limiting the movement of heavy duty vehicles in the state has added a new impetus to the sanity that now pervades the entire society.  It is all kudos to the Solomonic wisdom and acumen of Ambode and his amiable team.

When, in March, he commissioned the electrification of many communities that never had light for many years in the Lekki and Ajah axis of the state, he brought to light his love for rural development and infrastructural provision to make people enjoy the fruits of democracy.  In addition to linking them to the national grid, Ambode took it upon himself to offset their light bills pending when NEPA provides them with meters.  In the opening ceremony of that gargantuan project, the governor made it clear that it was imperative for the state government to reach out to other areas long denied access to modernity in the state.  His Operation Light up Lagos is always on the right track.

Today, he has focused attention on Badagry villages where they’ve not enjoyed or seen light since 1967.  The promise of the governor is that by the end of the year, all those communities would have been electrified.

A governor with huge concern for the citizenry, Ambode and his team have deemed it fit to construct over 20 pedestrian bridges across the state.  This is in addition to the completion of many uncompleted road networks and the construction of new ones in the state.  And to make movement and transportation fast and smooth, he has provided about 434 BRT buses to ply different routes.  So far, most of the parks for these buses have been complemented with mechanic workshops.  This, in the reckoning of the governor is to assist in the total maintenance of the buses and to ensure their longevity.

It is also interesting to note the achievements of the governor in the health sector.  Here, he has redirected attention to the moribund School of Nursing, Ikoyi, where he has not only infused new life there, he has decided to remind the public that health is wealth.  As a leader with urgent sense of duty, he commissioned 20 Mobile Intensive Care Unit and some transport ambulances which he deployed to all the local government areas of the state.

Most of the beneficiaries are the general hospitals and other government hospitals with the aim to make cheap and affordable health the envy of the state.  Even medical personnel in some quarters have commended the governor whose working relationship with them has been seen to be cordial, friendly and devoid of undue rancor and intimidation.  What else when it is apparent that the governor has brought his many years experience in the civil service to guide his every official step.  This was why he upgraded all the general hospitals by employing more paramedics and by providing them each with new generating sets.

Equally, in his bid to attract more investors to the state, he has fast-tracked the Lekki Free Trade zone.  This is to help investors come to encourage further development in the state.  Lekki Free Trade zone is a project so dear to the governor and his team.  And he has made it clear that more resources will be deployed to make it materialize sooner than later.

What with the initiation of the 4th Mainland Bridge which he has just started.  That will not just help to decongest roads, it will help to drastically boost movement and the economy of the state.  The governor had said, “I am delighted that this project which has been in the pipeline for years, is now set to take off.  This is the first time a state is doing such a big project without the input of the Federal government…”

Indeed the height of Ambode’s love and commitment to the people was when on Democracy Day, he hosted the physically-challenged in the state.  He mixed freely with them.  He showed them love and showered them with attention.  In fact, the whole Executive Council of the state did a state party for these set of people in the society.

In all, all these show that the person of Ambode is the magic wand that the state needs to overcome its developmental headaches.  He has come to usher in entirely new hopes and aspirations to keep the state on the front burner especially now that Lagos State has joined the enviable club of oil producing states in Nigeria.  This is another feather to his cap, for he has been in the forefront of endless efforts in the past to look for oil in the state.  Now the die is cast and Lagos State is on the threshold of history with governor Ambode as the arrowhead.

Ambode launches N500m Disability Trust Fund

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday launched a N500million Disability Trust Fund for physically-challenged persons in line with Section 12 of the Special People’s Law. He called on individuals, corporate organisations, non-governmental organisations, and other stakeholders to support the fund to reduce the challenges of such people.

Ambode, who spoke at an event held at the Lagos House, Ikeja, tagged “Ability in Disability,” said he chose to celebrate Democracy Day with them to fulfil his pledge to give every individual a voice in his administration.

The event, he said, afforded them opportunity to showcase their talents and enjoined Nigerians to encourage and show them love instead of pity.

He said: “Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, let me use this opportunity to appeal to all Lagosians to embrace people living with disabilities. Do not discriminate against them. All they require is care, support and opportunity to live a fulfilled and productive life just like any of us.”

The governor called out four of them – Dr Waheed Oki, who runs one of the largest clinics in Badagry; Shade Sulaiman, a programmer with Lagos Television; Akin Akinloye, leader of Sugar Band and Leila Atake, a lawyer, to join him on the stage.

Ambode said: “These are people who are successful in their own right. Dr Oki for instance is from Lagos Island and I have known him now for over 42 years. We were in the same class in form one. I have lived all my life growing up with people with disabilities and that is why I am doing this for them. I just want to honor all of you for your chosen careers and for living it up and allowing your abilities to actually triumph over your disabilities.

“I am committed to doing this and I know that with the position that I have, I am your partner and all the ones that are out there also, Lagos State will partner with all of you and you will all live your lives to the fullest.”

He said the impression most people have about persons living with disabilities often result in discrimination against them, noting that it is high time Nigerians began to embrace them as part of the society.

The governor said: “They are faced with barriers to education and training which limit their job opportunities, leading in turn to poverty, social exclusion and restricted access the basic human rights which we all take for granted. This is unacceptable. People living with disabilities have a right to live a decent life and enjoy the benefits of good governance and as much as anyone else.

“Physical disability is not inability and should not be seen as an inhibition from achieving something positive in life. The theme of this event tells the story – “Ability in Disability”. People living with disability have special skills and talents which if properly harnessed will make a huge difference not only in their lives, but to the society.”

Highlights of the event include special performances by several groups from Pacelli School of the Blind, Kelly Blind, Sugar Band led by Akin Akinloye, veteran saxophonists, Kunle Ajayi and Yemi Sax, among others.

  • Ambode….progressive beat goes on

    Ambode….progressive beat goes on

Lagos State Governor Akinwumi has built on the achievements of his predecessors-Babatunde Fashola and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu-in the last one year. His performance is a sign of more good things to come for Lagosians in the next three years, reports Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU

In the last one year, Lagos State has stood out in the federation. The former Federal Capital Territory and economic nerve centre has become a huge construction site. Under the dynamic, hardworking and diligent governor, Akinwumi Ambode, the state has continued to shoulder enormous national, sub-regional and continental responsibilities. It is evident that Lagosians did not vote for the former Accountant-General in vain. The financial surgeon has won the hearts of critics who felt that it will be difficult for him to fit into the shoes of his predecessor.

His performance has changed the perception. Ambode is a silent worker. The technocrat-turned politician is not a noise maker. He only allows his work to do the talking for him. The style of the shrewd administrator, which has yielded enormous dividends, appears to be beyond the ken and understanding of those who had earlier underrated his capacity.

The governor had swung into action from the first day. He inherited the traffic snarl in the metropolis. The governor urged the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to adopt new strategies, instead of impounding vehicles. His advice was misconstrued by some motorists to mean that they could get away with any offence. Traffic robbers took advantage of the gridlock on the bad roads. Armed robbers were on the prowl at two new generation banks at Ipakodo Ebute, Ikorodu. The governor received the blame.

However, he was undaunted. For him, governance is not a 100-metres dash that requires hasty decision making, but a four-year journey requiring careful, thorough and coordinated policy and decision making.

In his inaugural speech, Ambode reiterated his commitment to the State Development Plan (2012 – 2025) built on four pillars of Social Development and Security; Infrastructural Development; Economic Development and Sustainable Environment. These he had narrowed down to a tripod of security, job creation and infrastructural development.

On Saturday May 30, the governor unfolded his vision to the body of Permanent Secretaries. The result has been a more efficient and service-oriented civil service. The streamlining of some ministries, departments and agencies has reduced the cost of governance. The creation of new offices has catered for the emerging needs of the people.

The governor realigned the Ministry of Rural Development, Parastatals Monitoring Office and the Political and Legislative Powers Bureau. He established the Office of Overseas Affairs and Investment (Lagos Global), the Office of Civic Engagement and the Ministry of Wealth Creation.

He also scrapped the Office of the Special Adviser on Taxation and Revenue, and the Debt Management Office. Also, he merged the office of Works and Office of Infrastructure, the Office of Drainage Services and the Office of Environmental Service.

In his drive for investment, Ambode has held fruitful discussions with the President of Namibia, Dr Hage Geingob, the President of Dangote Group of Companies, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, investors from Dubai, United States of America, and envoys from several European and Middle East countries. Through these meetings, possible partnerships in areas of power, healthcare and capacity building have been ignited.

Ambode has been putting smiles on the faces of people. It was distressing to him that last year’s baby of the year, Oluwajomiloju, was diagnosed with a heart defect. He approved that the baby be flown to India at the expense of the state government. The surgery was successful. Next was Mrs. Ruth Uche, whose husband had fled his Agege home when his wife gave birth to triplets. When he read her story in the newspapers, the governor directed the deputy governor, Dr. Oluranti Adebule, to provide official assistance to the family. Later, Mr. Uche came out from his hideout and returned home to his family.

Retirees are not left out. In August last year, Ambode approved N11billion to offset the arrears owed them since 2010.

Security is a major priority of the administration. To curb petty crimes, cultism and armed robbery, the governor rebranded the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Nigerian Police. In an unprecedented move, he donated equipment worth N4.765 billion to the police. The items include 100 4-Door Salon Cars, 55 Ford Ranger Pick-Ups, 10 Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-Ups, 15 BMW Power Bikes, 100 Power Bikes, Isuzu Trucks, three helicopters, two Gun Boats, 15 Armoured Personnel Carriers, revolving lights, siren and public address system, Vehicular Radio Communicators, Security Gadgets including Bullet Proof Vests, Drones Helmets, Handcuffs, etc, Uniforms, Kits and Improved Insurance and Death Benefit Schemes for officers.

The governor also donated 48 patrol vans, 385 walkie talkies, 11 base and repeater stations, 1,150 uniforms, 570 handcuffs, 1,150 belts, berets and boots to boost the operation of the Neighbourhood Watchers. The move has improved security in the state.

Hailing the security agenda of the Lagos State government, the Minister of Interior, Lt-General Abdulrahman Dambazau (Rtd.) said it is unprecedented in the history of Nigeria.

The “Light Up Lagos” project has also assisted in boosting security. Major highways in Lagos have been lit up, improving driving experience for motorists and reducing criminal activities at night. In the past few months, the government has fixed street lights from Berger to Lekki, Third Mainland Bridge, Iyaba Ipaja, Ikorodu to Lagos Island, the entire Ikeja axis, Victoria Island, and Ikoyi. Also,49 transformers were donated to communities that were hitherto in total darkness while  67 communities in Ibeju-Lekki, starting from Eleko to Ode-Omi, were connected to the national grid. There are plans to connect 34 communities in Badagry to the National Grid in September.

Ambode has approved new 500KVA transformers for three communities in Palmgroove Estate, Ijegun and Alapere. In April, he commissioned a 36km stretch of Street Lights from Ile-Zik to Sango Toll Gate, while the entire stretch of Murtala Mohammed International Airport Road has also been lit up. He said the project will be extended to other parts of the state.

In furtherance of the government’s commitment to the criminal justice reforms, plans are underway to establish the first high-powered DNA Forensic Laboratory in Nigeria. The proposed Lagos State DNA Forensics Centre (LSDFC) would fulfill the need for DNA profiling, which is a unique forensic technique. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with ITSI Biosciences LCC for the commencement of the establishment of the Centre.

Ambode has achieved a lot in road rehabilitation and reconstruction in many parts of the state, including Ipaja, Mosan-Okunola, Oshodi- Isolo, Ikotun-Ejigbo and Somolu. Having started his career at the grassroots, the governor has not forgotten his past. He is committed to the happiness of the grassroots people. The Lagos State Public Works Corporation has been directed to move into these areas to give the roads a facelift.

This has improved the driving experience of motorists and reduced traffic gridlock. Most of the roads were not captured in last year’s fiscal year. The federal roads were also rehabilitated. These include the Lagos/Abeokuta and the Lagos/Badagry Expressway. No fewer than 500 roads have been rehabilitated while 189 have been earmarked for the next phase.

The major roads that have been completed include the Ago Palace Way, Capitol Road, Ajasa Command Road, Ejigbo Ikotun Road, Okota Road, Isolo, Metal Box Road, Ogba, Daleko Road, Mushin, Brown Street, and Oshodi.

Local government roads are not left out. In fulfillment of his campaign promises to ensure rehabilitation of inner roads, the governor approved the construction of 114 roads; two roads each across the 20 local governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs). Next month, these roads will be completed. Also, the construction of flyover bridges in Abule Egba junction and Ajah round about, two of the State’s high-density traffic zones, was approved by the Lagos State Executive Council.

The projects will be completed within a period of 16 months.

To boost public transportation, 434 New BRT Buses now ply the Ikorodu Corridor. This followed the commissioning of the Mile 12-Ikorodu Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Extension Project. The Blue Line Rail Project was re-launched by the governor. When completed, 500, 000 passengers would be conveyed daily between Marina and Okokomaiko.

Recently, Ambode unfolded plans for the construction of the Fourth Mainland Bridge. If this feat is achieved, history will not forget the governor. The project, which would be built under a Public Private Partnership initiative, will run from Ajah through Ikorodu, Isawo and berth at Ojodu, Ikeja, to the Lagos/Ibadan expressway. Investors have already shown interest in the project. The MoU for the project is about to be signed.

To discourage traffic and environmental abuses, a Special Offences (Mobile) Court was set up to deal with such cases, with the view to bring restoring sanity and orderliness. The move will curb the activities of traffic offenders, including motorcyclists, who violate traffic rules.

The administration has defended the health sector. In August last year, Ambode commissioned 20 Mobile Care Units Ambulances and 26 Transport Ambulances, which were deployed to the General Hospitals and 24 hour primary healthcare centres. He also approved the purchase of generators and x-ray machines to all general hospitals to ensure that 24-hour power supply is not compromised while cost incurred by patients in carrying out x-ray is reduced. The governor has tried to resolve outstanding issues relating to the welfare of doctors, thereby engendering stability in the sector. More paramedic staff and special medical coordinators have been recruited. Last week, the government announced that it has entered into a Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative for the construction of a Medical Park in Ikoyi. It will gulp N49billion. The project has already been awarded to MEDIPARK International Limited Consortium, which comprises of MEDIPARK International Limited, Cleveland Clinics Ohio, United States; St. Barnabas Healthcare System, New Jersey; and American Hospital Management Company, Washington DC. It is expected in 20 months. Ambode is committed to educational development. In a move to resolve the protracted crisis at the Lagos State University (LASU), he came up with an Executive Bill proposing a five-year single tenure for the Vice Chancellor. It was signed into law after itspassage by the House of Assembly. According to the new law, LASU is now a residential institution and the retirement age for professors is 70.

No fewer than 1,300 qualified teachers have been recruited for the primary schools. Over N1billion was used to renovate and supply educational infrastructure to secondary schools.

The governor has also lived up to expectation in job creation. The launch of the N25bn Employment Trust Fund is a right step in the right direction. Soft loans with very little interest are being given to entrepreneurs. In February, Ambode inaugurated the Board to manage the fund.

In the quest for food security, the  government has entered into a deal with the Kebbi State Government for the Development of Commodity Value Chain Rice Production.

The government has not neglected tourism. It has partnered with the private players and Nollywood to tap the limitless talents of the sector. Recently, the government rebranded the ‘One Lagos Fiesta’ to boost the industry.

As the state prepares for the 50th year of its creation on May 27, 2017, Ambode has put in place an elaborate plan for the celebration. A committee headed by Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, with economist Rasheed Gbadamosi as co-chairmen, has been set up.

Many people believe that Ambode’s sound financial management is an advantage, especially at this period of the national economic downturn. At work in Lagos is the blueprint put in place by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, which was built upon by former Governor Babatunde Fashola. Working with the blue-print, Ambode is living to expectation as the consolidator.

  • Ambode promises better, more prosperous Lagos

Ambode promises better, more prosperous Lagos

Lagos State Governor  Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday reassured Lagosians that his administration would not rest on its oars, but intensify efforts to deliver more infrastructure across the state in the next one year.

The governor, in his one year anniversary Address to Lagosians, titled, “Daring to dream and ready to actualise”, said despite the fact that the global economy is in turmoil and the Nigerian economy is facing huge challenges, Lagos has continued to march on with confidence and a clear vision.

Outlining some of his plans for the next one year, Ambode said plans are underway to install a fiber optic network around the State to boost broadband access to our homes and offices, improve the transportation system as well as continue the massive infrastructural development ongoing across the metropolis.

“We shall build and rehabilitate more roads; we shall ignite our Tourism and Entertainment potentials by approving a new International conference center and entertainment and theatre district; our television and radio stations will be fully overhauled to make them first class.

“We shall automate our bus system and introduce new buses; we shall overhaul our garbage collection system to make it more efficient; we shall build and refurbish more schools; we shall commence disbursement of loans to entrepreneurs and our youth under our Employment Trust Fund; establish a Rent-To-Own housing scheme and many more initiatives.

The governor said more importantly, greater attention would be paid issues involving the elderly, the youth and the people living with disabilities in the coming year, while schools and hospitals will receive special attention comprehensively.

“Fellow Lagosians, I renew my oath and pledge to serve you diligently, with passion, love and perseverance. I have always wanted to serve and I just ask that you continue to give me the cooperation to serve you and together, we will all realise the Lagos of our dreams where we thrive and not just survive.

“I also ask you to dream along with me as we actualize a vision of a vibrant, non-discriminatory, clean, prosperous, safe Lagos that we can all be proud of and God will help us all achieve our dreams,” he said.

The governor, who also spoke at a thanksgiving service held at the Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Ikeja to mark his  first year anniversary, said his election despite many challenges, was a clear indication that God was involved right from the beginning and as such he would continue to draw strength and inspiration from the Almighty.

The governor  thanked the National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) , Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu for believing in him and supporting him.

  • ‘Ambode is performing’

    ‘Ambode is performing’

Ambode Babes, a women support group for Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, has solicited support and prayer for the governor to perform more for the state’s growth.

Their leader, Alhaja Sekinat Jinadu Awote, who addressed reporters in Lagos at the weekend on the activities lined up to commemorate the first anniversary of the  Ambode administration, said the efforts of the administration to make life better for the people should be hailed.

She appealed to the governor to step up his effort towards empowering women.

Mrs. Awote said the governor should improve the lives of Lagosians and empower women.

She said: “If he empowers a woman, he is empowering the country.”

Alhaja Awote urged Lagosians to expect more, “because what they have seen in the last 12 months is a tip of the iceberg.”

Her words: “Governor Ambode will fulfil his electoral promises. He is a man of his words.

“I have known him since when he was a director in the civil service. He is a good leader, who is not only accommodating, but is concerned about the progress of Lagos State. I am not surprised by the giant strides he is making.”

The patron of the group, Prince Abiodun Akin Aderinoye, while praising Ambode, said: “Civil servants get their salary alert on the 20th of every month, when other governors owe. They have started getting their leave allowances. The governor promised to recruit teachers, LASTMA and KAI officials. These he has done. Don’t forget the 114 roads in the local governments and local council development areas. We need to thank him so he can do more.”

  • Ambode: From words to deeds

Obviously, saying something is not the same thing as doing something. Also, it may well be easier to say something than to do something. These realities mean that a power-seeker may well be a talker and not a doer, and may well demonstrate inaction in power.

In October 2014, a power-seeker who is today in power formally expressed his desire to govern Lagos State. He projected his political vision through an inventive acronym, LAGOS, which was notable for the inclusion of service.   Akinwunmi Ambode declared at a well-attended event at the Onikan Stadium, Lagos: “Our message is LAGOS. LAGOS is Leadership, LAGOS is Accountability, LAGOS is Good Governance, LAGOS is Opportunities and LAGOS is Service. This is what I stand for.” It was striking that his organising principles were put in a capsule named after the state he sought to govern.

As Ambode marks a year as Governor of Lagos State, his performance in office shows that he is a man who can walk the talk.  It is useful to reflect on how he moved from words to deeds. What’s in a biography? Plenty, if it’s about Ambode.  The Art of Selfless Service by Marian Osoba, which was launched in Lagos ahead of Ambode’s political ascendancy, stands out as a must-read for anyone who wants a picture of him.

Two quotes from the biography deserve contemplation, considering the familiar tendency for personal aggrandisement in the country’s corridors of power.   Ambode was quoted as saying: “A true leader sees his work as selfless service towards a higher purpose. A true leader should be judged by what he has not – ego, arrogance and self interest.” He also said: “We must, wherever we find ourselves, create an atmosphere of selfless service.”  Ambode’s emphasis on selfless service is a defining plus because a leader without a correct sense of service is ultimately negative.

Interestingly, the biography provides a thought-provoking response to the view in certain quarters that Ambode is a puppet of certain political kingmakers. Ambode said:”At different points in our lives, we have had relationships; a teacher, a boss, an employer, a friend, a parent who has greatly changed the way we looked at life and the world. Someone who inspired us and motivated us, someone who taught us to set goals and instilled the confidence and spirit to achieve them, someone who had high standards and truly stood for something; such a person is the real mentor we all need to find. I have found true leaders through such observations in the course of my career…they help you build your art of selfless service, but it is important too that you carve out for yourself an identity authentically your own, that you don’t monkey another person’s life so slavishly as to lose your own.” Against this background, it may be observed that Ambode has been guided by his understanding of brand identity. In a year in office, he has communicated his own unique personal brand.

Before he became a governor, Ambode in May 2014 published a piece in celebration of Lagos State’s 47th anniversary.  Ambode said in the piece titled “Happy Anniversary, Lagos State”: “As Lagos turns fifty in the next three years, therefore, the future beckons on whoever would take over the baton in the relay of enduring people-friendly policies to solidify and build on these worthy legacies.” His reference to legacies was a tribute to the governmental accomplishments of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who governed the state from 1999 to 2007, and Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, who succeeded Tinubu. The state’s 50th anniversary will be celebrated next year, and the Ambode administration is preparing for a mega celebration.

It stands to reason that a megacity needs mega governance. The status of Lagos as a megacity is a reason for mega governance. Nigeria’s megacity in 2015 was listed 12th among the world’s largest 35 cities, and credited with an unofficial population figure of “approximately 21 million”. Of course, a mega city has to grapple with mega challenges. Megacity challenges include slums, crime, homelessness, traffic congestion and environmental pollution.

“If we take the concept of resource generation, allocation and distribution into cognisance and apply the principles of good governance, we will achieve economic growth and development,” Ambode said while presenting a paper titled “Public Finance: Probity and Accountability” at a workshop organised in August 2014 by the Lagos State Government and the Lagos Business School. Also, in a newspaper interview he shed light on his understanding of good governance, which is an essential aspect of his vision:”In essence, the elected government is like a caretaker for the rest of the people, overseeing their resources on their behalf. The citizens remain the landlord while the elected officials are only caretakers. Arising from this, good government can only thrive where the resources of the people are judiciously distributed to various sectors/needs in the society in a just and equitable manner that makes life easier for every person.”

It is noteworthy that when in November 2015 the Ambode administration donated modern security equipment worth over N4bn to the Nigeria Police Force, President Muhammadu Buhari described the donation as a “remarkable feat”. Buhari urged other state governments to “emulate Lagos State by supporting security agencies that are trying to keep us safe”.  Ambode’s exemplary donation was of national significance because security is significant.

Food is significant too. Food is a hierarch in the hierarchy of needs. When in March the Ambode administration signed a record-setting agriculture-related Memorandum of Understanding with Kebbi State’s Atiku Bagudu administration, it was an exemplary move towards a much-needed agricultural revolution in the country. “This is the first time in the history of Nigeria that two states are collaborating to develop their agricultural potential,” Ambode declared. The logic of this agricultural partnership and how it will enable national food sufficiency and food security, apart from its employment-generation possibilities, is compelling and commendable.

These two instances will suffice to illustrate and underline Ambode’s national relevance and remarkableness, beyond his undeniable gubernatorial value.  By effectively moving from words to deeds, he has shown what is possible when a leader takes his own words seriously.

  • APC man hails Ambode’s first year record

‘Tinubu is hero of our democracy’

A chairmanship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State, Captain Adebayo Dosunmu (retd.), has hailed Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for his sterling performance in the first year of his administration.

The APC chieftain noted that since the governor assumed office, he had distinguished himself as a purposeful leader with people-oriented programmes. Dosunmu said: “Within this short period, Lagos State has witnessed meaningful socio-economic growth and development.”

The politician also hailed APC National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for supporting Ambode to build on the successes of his predecessors.

The APC chieftain described Ambode as a democratic marquee who “we are all enjoying now”.

On the APC National Leader, Dosunmu added: “With a humble beginning and struggle through the thick and thin of life’s vicissitudes, Asiwaju rose to become a distinguished leader with burgeoning reckoning. Today, Nigerians celebrate Asiwaju Tinubu as the hero of Democracy Day.”

  • Ambode launches N500m Disability Trust Fund

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has launched a N500million Disability Trust Fund for physically challenged persons.

He said the fund was in line with provisions of Section 12 of the Special People’s Law and called on individuals, corporate organisations, Non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders to support the fund to maximise the disabilities of challenged persons.

Ambode, who spoke at an event held at the Lagos House, Ikeja, tagged ‘Ability in Disability’, said he chose to celebrate Democracy Day with persons living with disabilities.

He said that the decision to host them was not only in line with the commitment to run an all-inclusive government but to emphasise his pledge to give every individual a voice in his administration.

He said the event afforded them the opportunity to showcase their talents just as he enjoined Nigerians to encourage and show love rather than pity them.
“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, let me use this opportunity to appeal to all Lagosians to embrace people living with disabilities. Do not discriminate against them. All they require is care, support and opportunity to live a fulfilled and productive life just like any of us,” he said.

  • Lagos at 50: Celebration will showcase achievements, culture – Ambode

Lagos at 50: Celebration will showcase achievements, culture – Ambode

•My critics are ignorant – Soyinka

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Friday officially launched the one year long activities to mark the 50 years anniversary of the State which will climax on May 28, 2017, just as he said the activities lined up would showcase to the world the unique achievements, culture, heritage and the tourism potentials of the State.

Governor Ambode, who spoke at a special children programme tagged “Vision of the Child” to officially kick start the one year long activities for the Golden Jubilee of the State, said the celebration was put together to provide historical opportunity to propel the State into unimaginable greatness as well as put it on highest pedestal in the league of world’s mega-city states.

The Governor, who assured that the events would be the biggest celebration in the 50 years history of the State, added that Lagosians should expect nothing short of world class events. He said: “This golden jubilee celebration will show Lagos for what it is – a home for all and a land of opportunities where dreams are made and fulfilled.

“This celebration will be all inclusive and in furtherance to this, each of the five administrative divisions of the State will have one month to showcase their culture and landmass. In this way, we will expose to the world the uniqueness and diversity of our culture and tradition as well as our great tourism potentials.”

Speaking on the vision of the child initiative, the Governor who said the State had consistently supported the initiative explained that it was aimed at promoting creative thinking, literary arts and painting skills. Besides, Governor Ambode commended the Lagos At  50 Committee headed by Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka and Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi, and expressed optimism in their ability to showcase the State to the world and organize memorable events.

In his remarks, Soyinka clarified that the idea of the one year long celebration was just to create consciousness of the celebration in the minds of the people, and not that events would be organized every day. He said for instance, a month of solidarity would be dedicated to victims of Boko Haram, while the people would equally be given the opportunity to know more about Lagos.

Soyinka also used the opportunity of the occasion to fault those against his appointment by Governor Ambode as co-chair of the Committee, saying they were only exhibiting ignorance. While stating that he would not join issue with such people, Soyinka said his family was a pioneer in the development of the State, and that it was unfortunate that the so-called Lagosians were denying themselves the opportunity of knowing Lagos which his Committee would offer.
