  • Residents beg Ambode to prioritise water, roads, electricity in Badagry

Residents of Badagry have urged Governor Akinwu-nmi Ambode and the lawmakers from the area to prioritise provision of water, roads and transformers for the people.

The residents made the plea at the official inauguration of eight modern boreholes donated to the Badagry Constituency II by the lawmaker representing the area, Mr Setonji David.

Setonji, who represents Badagry Constituency II at the Lagos State House of Assembly, donated the boreholes to mark the 2016 World Water Day in his constituency.

He said he decided to provide the boreholes to make potable water available because many residents had no access to potable water in the area.

According to him, many ailments and diseases could be prevented by access to potable water.

He said: “Water is life and it is one of the basic necessities of life. It is unfortunate that many people still walk long distance in search of water, water scarcity and stress is still on the rise. When we provide clean water for citizens, they will be healthy and we will spend less money on health care.

“In Badagry, most people do not have access to potable water and we cannot continue to look and leave them in their plight. I want to appeal to Gov. Ambode to come to the rescue of Badagry people and other areas with water challenge.”

The lawmaker who is Chairman, House Committee on Physical Planning and Urban Development assured the residents that government was working hard to improve electricity and roads.

Pastor Olusegun Odesanya, the Chairman, Ibiye Town Community Development Association (CDA) in Olorunda Local Council Development Area (LCDA), said residents had challenges of potable water.

The cleric said: “The challenge of water here is so much that we have started using this borehole long before today using our power generator for pumping of water.”

Also speaking, Alhaja Oluwakemi Idowu, the Woman Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Olorunda LCDA’s Ward C, who commended the lawmaker for the borehole, said that residents spend a lot of money to buy potable water.

Baale of Agemowo in the same LCDA, Chief Solomon Godonu said,”We thank the lawmaker but we need more development in the area of road and electricity. Our roads are bad.”

The boreholes are located in  Itakete Quarter, Singbomeh Compound Age Mowo,  New layout close , Ilogbo Eremi, and  Ago Egun Quarters, Ibiye in Olorunda LCDA , Badagry.

    Lagos joins oil states

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday declared that Lagos has officially joined the league of oil producing states in Nigeria, following the discovery of crude oil by Tunde Folawiyo Petroleum Company Limited in Badagry, Lagos.

Ambode made the revelation when the management of the company led by the Group Managing Director, Mr. Tunde Folawiyo, visited him at the Lagos House, Ikeja.

The governor praised the firm for their doggedness to achieve the feat after 25 years of hard work, saying that by the provision of Section 162 (2) of the 1999 Constitution, Lagos has become an oil producing state.

He said: “I want to thank you very much for this and I say it with all conviction because I know that based on Section 162 (2) of the 1999 Constitution, Lagos becomes an oil producing state and by virtue of this, the 13 per cent derivation that is due to oil producing states, Lagos will start to partake from it by your very good gesture.

“So we officially declare Lagos State as an oil producing state. We also notify the Federal Government by this action that we would be sharing out of the 13 per cent derivation. So all we need do is to apply and then we join.”

Ambode added that the feat has not only placed Lagos in the history books as the first state outside the Niger Delta to become an oil producing state, but has also opened up a new page for revenue generation.

“It also means that by the additional revenue that is coming from this action, we would have more resources to provide infrastructure for Lagosians and this is what we want other investors and businessmen to emulate, so that beyond the issue of profit, you are actually creating impact on people without them necessarily knowing that it is actually coming from a venture like this that you have embarked on,” he said.

He said the resilience of the Tunde Folawiyo Petroleum Company, an indigenous firm, has shown the possibilities and opportunities for investors and businessmen willing to commit their resources to boost local production.

“I want to commend what you have done; it’s a sign that you believe so much in Lagos State. I want to congratulate you. I want to showcase you as a very good example of a dogged entrepreneur, as someone who believes in Nigeria because that’s what you epitomise here.”

Folawiyo said the discovery of crude oil in Lagos, which has taken over 25 years to achieve, has gone a long way to show the possibilities achievable if government continues to support to indigenous investors and companies.

He said the company has committed about $400million dollars to achieve the feat, adding that the current status of the oil well has the capacity to produce at least 12,000 barrels daily, with a possibility to increase to 25,000 to 50,000 barrels in the nearest future.

Ambode: domestic violence traceable to dysfunctional family background

Lagos State Governor Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has identified dysfunctional family background as a major cause of domestic violence. He advocated the need for parents to imbibe in their wards, the virtues of honesty, respect, morality, good neighborliness, peace and love.

Governor Ambode spoke yesterday at the Lagos House during the family day celebration hosted by the state government in commemoration of the International Family Day.

He said acts of terror and violence that have ruptured global peace and security could be traced to the absence of strong family ties, and as such, parents must spend time with their children no matter how difficult it may be.

The Governor described the family as the smallest but most important unit of the society, saying things can only go right in the country if first addressed in the family.

His words: “Most of the recorded domestic violence is traceabe to dysfunctional family backgrounds. Our traditional family cohesion and bond has been weakened due to daily life challenges of trying to make ends meet.

“We must, as a matter of urgency, in spite of the demanding pace of life, pause and find time to reconnect with our families. Our families need us; our children need us. The family always provides emotional support in times of need. We have family members in need of emotional, physical and moral support. The support and encouragement given to a family member today can prevent an act of terror or suicide tomorrow.”

Ambode promised that his administration would continue to provide the necessary infrastructural and institutional support for the family, adding that government would soon embark on the building of world class leisure parks.

“One of the crucial infrastructure that the government has put in place to encourage family bonding is the establishment of parks and gardens in strategic locations across the state. I am happy to note that these facilities have become the convergence point for families to relax, not only during festive occasions, but also on weekdays and weekends. In addition, this administration has started the process of building new world class leisure parks.

“As we celebrate the international day of the family today, I urge you all to spend more time with your family, especially with our children. A hug or a smile goes a long way in boosting the morale of family members. If we want to get the society right, we must get the family right. We must start at the family level to reintroduce the norms and the values which we grew up with. “Our families must reintroduce and imbibe the virtues of honesty, respect, morality, good neighborliness, peace and love. We must work towards living in harmony with family members and ensuring safety of lives through healthy practices.”

The wife of the governor, Bolanle said without communication, social interaction, love and mutual respect for one another, a family can hardly be united or peaceful.

She said women and children deserved to be respected and pampered, adding that such was needed to avoid domestic violence.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Families, Healthy Lives and Sustainable Future”.

Other dignitaries at the event included the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Idiat Oluranti-Adebule; Chief Justice of Lagos State Justice Olufunmilayo Atilade; former Lagos State Deputy Governor Princess Sarah Sosan; members of the State Executive Council, among others.

LAGOS State Government has rewarded some civil servants for their dedication and commitment to work.

Governor Akinwumi Ambode, who presented the award to the beneficiaries yesterday, said the awardees were honoured because of their effectiveness and efficiency.

Ambode, represented by the Head of Service, Mrs Olabowale Ademola, at the event held at Memorable Garden Alausa, said the government would continue to support initiatives aimed at excellent service delivery in the state.

Office of Transformation, Creativity and Innovation Director-General Mr Toba Otunsanya said the awards were designed to reward outstanding individuals and Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) that have gone beyond the call of duty to ensure that the objective of the initiative is realised.

He said through these workers’ efforts, the state now has functional front desks across the pilot MDAs and directional signages on all the floors of the chartered MDAs,

Ambode to residents: we must achieve noiseless Lagos

LAGOS State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has restated his resolve to stop noise pollution.

Ambode, represented by the Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Samuel Babatunde Adejare, spoke to a select crowd of stakeholders and school children at the LTV Blue Roof in Agidingbi, Ikeja, on Monday.

The forum was organised by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), for the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

He said achieving a noiseless Lagos is a task that must be done.

The governor said population increase, heightened by the economic status of the state, has led to high congestion with attendant effect on increased vehicular traffic and commercial, industrial, religious and social activities.

He said: “My team is working towards a sustainable physical planning and urban development that will provide an enabling environment for socio-economic activities.”

Adejare, who also addressed the stakeholders, said government would no longer tolerate noise pollution from human activities. He said the forum was organised for every stakeholder to see the need to avoid noise and not constitute nuisance to others.

LASEPA General Manager Mr Adebola Shabi said though sound is essential to daily living, “noise is generally regarded as unwanted sound which produces unpleasant effect and discomfort to the ears.”

He said LASEPA is poised to regulate noise levels and elevate the standard of living by making the state livable.
