  • MAUSTECH: Amosun allays fears of MAPOLY students

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has assured students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) in Abeokuta, the state capital, that the creation of the Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology (MAUSTECH) as well as the Ogun State Polytechnic at Ipokia will not disrupt the academic calendar of their institution.

The governor spoke yesterday at his office in Abeokuta when he addressed students of MAPOLY during their peaceful protest to his office.

The students expressed grievances at the refusal of their lecturers to conduct an examination, three weeks after it was scheduled to hold.

Describing the action of the lecturers as a ploy to hold the government to ransom, Amosun said representatives of the institution would be invited to give reasons for their decision.

The governor, who said the lecturers wanted the academic workers of MAPOLY to be automatically transferred to the new university, noted that this could not happen because only those who qualified to lecture in a university will be absorbed.

He added that the students will not be moved to Ipokia immediately, as MAPOLY will not go into extinction until after four years.

Amosun cautioned the students against being used for selfish interest.

Allaying the fears of students, the governor said new lecturers would be employed at Ipokia to lecture National Diploma I students.

He added that no new ND student will be admitted into MAPOLY this year.

The students, led by Chairman of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), Comrade Sikirullahi Balogun Olawale, hailed the government for handling their grievances well.
