Nigeria ‘ll be great again, says Amosun, other

Ogun State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has expressed confidence that Nigeria would be great again in spite of the myriad of challenges confronting her.

In his message to the Muslim faithful as they marked the Eid-el-Fitr yesterday, Amosun urged Nigerians to continue to work for peace and unity in order to ensure genuine and steady development in the country.

The governor spoke shortly after he joined other Muslim faithful to observe the Eid-el-Kabir prayer at Oke-Yidi, Lantoro, Abeokuta, to mark this year’s Sallah celebration.

He said the nation’s economy would “bounce and pick up again” with the return of President Muhammadu Buhari from medical vacation in London.

According to him, Buhari has stepped up his onslaught against corruption and insecurity as well as showing commitment towards the country’s economic development.

He urged Nigerians to continually give their support to the President in his determination to put Nigeria on the path of greatness.

“Clearly, things are getting better. And with the return of Mr President, things will get even better. Of course, we have noticed that all the three key areas of Mr President’s administration are being reinvigorated.

“From security, you will see what Mr President is doing, and everybody is working round the clock to make sure that the entire nation is secured.

“Look at corruption, for instance, of course you know Mr President’s stance. He is still fighting corruption and he will continue to fight it.

“He had said that we have to kill corruption before corruption kills us. Even as we speak, corruption is already killing us. Thank God for his administration that is now fighting corruption.

“One thing that I know that is very dear to Mr President’s heart is to make our economy rebound, that our economy picks up and that we create wealth for our people.

“And we cannot do that without diversification. In these key areas, we are walking our talk. I know with the support of the good people of Nigeria, Nigeria will be great again.

“Anybody that knows God must know that peace is very synonymous with God. Such person will not preach violence, hatred and insurgency.

“So, I want to admonish us in Ogun State and indeed Nigeria, that once we love one another, once we are united, once we are peaceful, Nigeria will be great again.”

Earlier in his sermon, the Chief Imam of Egbaland, Alhaji Liadi Orunsolu, urged the people to be faithful to God and man.

Orunsolu, who prayed for the wellbeing of President Buhari and his administration, also asked Nigerians, particularly Muslims, to have patience and be willing to sacrifice for the progress of the country.

“Although, things are hard, I believe that if we can have patience and are willing to sacrifice, things will be normal again,” he said.

  • APC urges aspirants to surpass Amosun

APC urges aspirants to surpass Amosun

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State  has said it will field in a governorship candidate that would build on  the achievements of Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

Its Acting Chairman, Alhaji Tajudeen Lemboye, made this known in Abeokuta, the state capital,  when former House of Representatives member, Hon. Abiodun Akinlade, declared his governorship.

Akinlade represented Yewa South/Ipokia Constituency between 2003 and 2015. He  defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to APC after reuniting with Amosun.

Lemboye urged the state to copy the example of Lagos State that  had continued to benefit immensely from continuity in governance since the return of democracy in 1999.

He said APC must present a united front in 2019 and appealed to aspirants to conduct themselves wisely to ensure victory for the party.

“Governor Amosun has made a difference in Ogun State. We want someone that would continue with his pace of performance. We have asked him (Akinlade) several questions and he has offered answers satisfactorily. We are convinced that if given the opportunity, he would do well.

“We are an umpire. Anybody can aspire and decide to contest from any zone, whether Ogun West or Ogun East or even Central. We have not zoned the governorship. But eventually, we will decide the most competent and qualified aspirant to fly our party’s flag,” Lemboye said.

He described  Akinlade as  a credible politician and  man of the people, saying he represented his constituency and the state well at the National Assembly from 2003 – 2015.

According to him, the former lawmaker would perform better  if given another opportunity to serve.

He said the APC had given Akinlade permission to traverse the length and breadth of the state and solicit the support of party members and the electorate.

Responding, Akinlade assured that he would run a people- oriented government, accord  special recognition to women and youth through empowerment and entrepreneurship.

“The governor is risking his achievements to support Ogun West for governor. I want to assure him that we will not disappoint him.

“I have what it takes to step into the shoes of Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

I have aspired for governorship thrice, but this time round, with God and the support of the governor and leaders of the party, I will emerge victorious come 2019,” Akinlade said.

He promised to ensure a holistic economic policy by harnessing the state’s comparative advantage in the three Free Trade Zones of Olokola, Kajola and Agbara.

He stressed the need to create the  State Capital Development Authority through the appropriate legislation and pursue aggressive food/livestock production and rural development.

  • Amosun’s Chief of Staff urges support for governorship ambition

Mr Tolulope Odebiyi, the Chief of Staff to Ogun

State Governor Ibikunle Amosun, has begun consultations with various political groups and party chieftains in the All Progressives Congress (APC), especially in Ogun East Senatorial District ahead of the 2019 governorship election.

Odebiyi met earlier with the Chief Mobiliser of Amosun for Second Term Project, Otunba Babatunde Onakoya (aka Debasco), as well as other party chieftains for their support and blessings to realise his ambition.

He sought the blessings and support of the APC leader in Leguru Local Government Council Area (LCDA) and Odogbolu Local Government Area.

The governorship seat has reportedly been zoned to Yewa-Awori in Ogun West Senatorial District.

Odebiyi noted that success might be hard to achieve, if an aspirant does not consult people widely on the matter.

On the political significance of every senatorial district in the state, the governor’s aide, who is also the son of the late Senator Jonathan Odebiyi of Iboro-Yewa in Ogun West Senatorial District, hailed Onakoya for his usual support.

The aspirant urged the APC chieftain to double his efforts ahead of the 2019 governorship poll.

He said: “I am at home. There’s no division in Ijebu and Yewa. I belong to (the late) Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s family, which makes me a part of Ijebu. The likes of (the late) Baba Bisi Onabanjo, Onasanya, among others, testify that I belong to Ijebu as well. I have fathers here; so, I have no doubt that I am in the midst of my people.

“I want you all to know that we are working to achieve the best in the standard mission of Governor Amosun’s administration.

“We have been in the system, we know where the shoe pinches, and I am using this medium to clamour for continuity in Ogun State.

Amosun to applicants: keep your CofO safe

Certificates of Occupancy (C of O) and other land title documents are security papers that should be handled with care and kept away from unauthorized persons,  Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has said.

The governor spoke yesterday  at the distribution of C of O and other land title documents to beneficiaries of the Home Owner Charter at the Oba’s Complex Auditorium, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta.

Amosun, who was represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Jide Ojuko, urged those who have collected theirs to be mindful of how they handle the documents so that it would not fall into wrong hands.

‘’Please ensure you keep your C of O in a very safe place. I have seen cases where people will take the documents, forge the signature and promptly take them to the bank to obtain loans without the consent or knowledge of the owner,’’ he advised.

The Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, Ministry of Urban and Physical Planning,  Bola Ajayi, appreciated the efforts of Community Development Associations (CDA), saying the success recorded on the implementation of the programme was a testimony to the genuineness and sincerity of the current administration in making life worth living for the people.

He appealed to the beneficiary to sensitise their neighbours about the authenticity of the programme.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Solomon Ajayi from Ekerin Oyero in Ifo Local Government Area, lauded the governor for introducing the scheme for the people of the state.a

  • Ogun 2019: Obasanjo, Amosun drum support for Ogun West

Ogun 2019: Obasanjo, Amosun drum support for Ogun West

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, and Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State have justified why the Ogun West Senatorial District should produce the next governor of the state in 2019.

They spoke in Abeokuta, at the 80th birthday ceremony of a former Secretary to the State Government, Deacon Poju Adeyemi, yesterday, stressing that the people of Ogun West are competent, qualified and capable of governing the state.

Obasanjo said it will be unfair to deny Ogun West the governorship position in 2019, after more than 40 years of the creation of the state.

He said Ogun West has credible, illustrious and competent professionals in all sphere of endeavours, such as academia, military, civil service and politics.

However, the former president warned the people of Ogun West to sink their differences and come up with a single candidate in the forthcoming elections.

He said the zone has been unable to present a single candidate in previous elections, due to their political rivalry.

According to him, the people of Ogun East Senatorial District have been out smarting Ogun West in previous elections, by standing behind a single, united candidate.

Amosun, while eulogising the celebrator, said the only way to make him happy for the rest of his life, is to make sure that a candidate from Ogun West emerges as the next governor of Ogun State in 2019.

He said the district should produce the next governor in the spirit of justice, equity and fairness.

The governor said the people of Ogun West have contributed immensely to the growth and development of Ogun State, adding that the only way to compensate them is to give them the governorship slot in 2019.

He urged all stakeholders in the state to see reason with him, in ensuring that a candidate from Ogun West takes over from him in May 2019.

Prominent personalities at the birthday ceremony included the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, the Olubara of Ibara, Oba Jacob Omolade, Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Suraj Adekunbi, members of the Ogun State Executive Council and members of the Ogun State Traditional Council.

He said: “His role as one of the pioneers of the Western Nigeria Television (WNTV), the first television station in Africa, and a consistent television personality, made him a pride to the Broadcast industry.

“Baba Faleti, as a broadcaster, poet and writer targeted his energy at the promotion of culture and his death at this time is regrettable. His sound wisdom would have been valuable now that we are all battling to restore our fading traditional values.

  • State creation hampered South West development – Governors

State creation hampered South West development – Governors

Southwest governors on Monday lamented the splitting of the old Western Nigeria into six states by the Federal Government, saying the action not only robbed the people of their oneness, but also hampered the region’s socio – economic development.

The governors – Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos), Senator Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Ayo Fayose Ekiti) and Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), spoke during the Southwest Governors’ Quarterly meeting held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Amosun, the host Governor in his welcome speech, said instead of building bridges, state creation led to boundary disputes and security challenges among them.

The governor recalled that many landmark achievements were recorded in Yoruba land during the time of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, as Premier of the Western Region.

He advised that the time has come for them to unite, promote and re – enact the achievements of the South-West in the Nigerian Federation.

Amosun said: “As a region, it is important that we promote the pre-eminence and achievements of the South-West in the Nigerian Federation. This in reference and in particular to the greatness we have achieved as a people when we were together as a regional government in Nigeria.

“We will recall those laudable feats made us the envy of other regions. Time and space will, definitely, not permit me to begin to list the giant leaps that the South-West took as a region between 1957 and 1967 particularly under the leadership of the late sage, Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo.

“Permit me to list a few. We have physical infrastructure such as the Cocoa House at Ibadan, which was aptly named after the source of its funding; the Agodi Secretariat at Ibadan; and the different roads that connect our towns and cities some of which are still standing the test of time. We also have the educational infrastructure of which we are still benefitting from today.

” Indeed, many of us seated in this room are beneficiaries of the Free Education Programme of that time. It is the same Free Education Programme that culminated in the establishment of a University that was once the most beautiful campus in Sub-Sahara Africa, the then University of Ife, and now appropriately named the Obafemi Awolowo University, at Ile-Ife.

“We cannot also forget the economic infrastructure; we have the O’odua Group as the umbrella Investment House for the commercial enterprise of the region such as the Sketch Publication; the Wemabod Estates; the Lafia Hotels; the Premier Hotel at Ibadan; the Area J4 Forest Reserve and others.

“However, the creation of states from the old Western Region in 1976 which should have been an impetus for further socio-economic development had been allowed to create artificial boundaries between our people.

“And to further worsen the situation, some of our people are also making themselves available as instruments of division because of their selfish political gains. The consequence is that our people begin to see themselves as a people of one state or the other rather than as a sub-unit of the entity of the Yoruba people.

“This is not without its attendant challenges of intra and inter-state boundary disputes which have worsened security in some states and, hampered socio-economic development. Instead of building bridges, some of our people are digging trenches for protection against their own brothers and sisters.

“My dear brothers, the onerous task on our hands is to lead our people to further prosperous living. That is why the chosen agenda for this meeting ‘Economic Self-Determination for South-West Nigeria’ with special focus on ‘South-Western Nigeria Export Initiative’ is very apt.

“Instead of the bowl-in–hand practice that each of the states seeks from the Federal Allocation, the time has come for us to map out strategies to harness the natural resources of the entire region for further socio-economic development of the South-West Region as a whole and for more prosperity for our people.

For Aregbesola, the old Western Nigeria recorded greater feats when it operated as single state.

“If we look critically at the achievements we had as singular state of Western Region. We must be mindful of the fact that as singular state then, we achieved more than now when we are divided into six states.

“We must identify our strength, unify those strength and explore them for the benefit of our people. We use the development to galvanise our potentials,” Aregbesola said.
