Amosun: wage bill, WAEC fees hit N9.5b

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun yesterday said the state’s monthly wage bill had hit “almost N9billion”, following increase in staff strength, pensioners, others.

Amosun said the fee for the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for pupils has risen from N466million to N496million due to surge in enrolment.

The governor spoke at his Oke Mosan office, Abeokuta, the state capital, after  swearing–in transition committee chairmen for the 20 local governments.

He said the WASSCE fees may jump to N500million next year.

Amosun said there was need for the state and local governments to “think out of the box” on how to effectively meet the increasing needs of residents amid dwindling federal allocation and internally generated revenue.

The governor said he would create local council development areas from the existing 20 councils to fast track development in rural settings, adding that commissioners would be appointed soon.

He said despite the daunting financial challenges, his administration was paying workers,  not indebted to WAEC and executing capital projects that would further bring investments and development.

According to him, his “most virulent critics know that the administration has done quite well but are unwilling to admit it publicly”.

Amosun urged the chairmen, including Adesina Baruwa (Ijebu-Ode), Tolani Timothy (Ikenne), Olaniyi Opanuga (Odogbolu), Omisanya Awoniyi (Sagamu) and 16 others not to use their new positions to pursue personal business.

  • Relocate beggars, hawkers from highways, FRSC urges Amosun

OGUN State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Adegoke Adetunji has appealed to Governor Ibikunle Amosun to assist in evacuating beggars off the Sango-Ota Bridge.

No fewer than 100 beggars, he said, besieged the bridge daily, hindering the flow of traffic.

Adegoke said this is against the traffic regulations.

He spoke at the yearly campaign/enlightenment organised by Ota Unit Command in conjunction with Shell Nigeria Gas Limited for road users at the Sango Main Park.

Adetunji was answering questions on the accident on the bridge that killed three and a similar mishap on Benin/Sagamu Expressway in which 13 Olabisi Onabanjo University students died.

The Sango crash, he said, was caused by a Scania Truck with registration number TTD 219 XA which rammed into some commercial vehicles which have turned the bridge into a garage.

The FRSC chief said the fatality could have been more, if the vehicle had run into the beggars on the bridge.

He also appealed Amosun to relocate  hawkers on the expressway and all roads in the state, saying this would enhance free flow of traffic and enable haulage vehicles to manoeuvre in case of brake failure.

He said: “75 per cent of the expressway starting from toll gate to Sango has been occupied by traders. This is dangerous and worrisome should accident occur.”

Adetunji urged tipper owners and Independent Petroleum Marketers to stop using underage drivers and ensure that their vehicles are in good shape before embarking on a journey.

The FRSC, he said, is partnering with the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), and Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) across all the states, to regulate the trucks that would be used for haulage and ensure that rickety ones are taken off the roads.

Any haulage truck that doesn’t meet the required standard will not be allowed to move on the road, while any under-age driver would be arrested and prosecuted, Adetunji said.

Adetunji enjoined all tipper/truck owners to ensure that speed limiters are installed in their vehicles before the September deadline.

Any commercial vehicle caught without the device after the deadline, he said, would be impounded and the driver prosecuted.

Adegoke said two drivers must henceforth accompany trucks embarking on a long journey.

This, he said, would guarantee that no driver drives more than the normal four hours at a stretch and observe at least 30 minutes rest.

The Ota Unit Commander, Mr Matthew Olonisaye, urged vehicle owners and other road users to respect traffic laws, especially during raining season.

According to Olonisaye, the public enlightenment is imperative because the Corps is saddled with the responsibility of creating a safer motoring environment through sensitisation, education, regulation and enforcement of traffic laws.

He appealed to motorists to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition before going on a journey to avoid endangering other road users.

He urged vehicle owners to ensure they use good tyres.

Tyres, according to him, come with expiry dates, once a tyre begins to wear-out, it becomes more likely to be slippery on a wet road and this can lead to accident.

Tyres, Olonisaye said have four years life span and the expiration starts from the manufacturing date e.g.”4002″. The first two numbers “40”, he said, represents the year of manufacture.

He urged the vehicles owners to note the manufacturing and expiring dates while buying tyres, and warned against the use of fairly used tyres.

Olonisaye urged drivers to ensure greatest caution when driving in rain or at night. Windshield, wipers, pointers, headlights and rear lights must be working perfectly. He reiterated that eyes, hands and brains must be in good shape, adding that compliance to speed limits is required.

He appealed to all drivers to ensure the use of seatbelts and avoid drunk driving and overloading.

Commercial drivers are enjoined to comply strictly with the use of passengers’ manifest for the identification of all passengers in case of accidents.

The Chairman, Ado/Odo-Ota Local Government, Mr Rotimi Abdulrahman, urged the drivers to be defensive drivers.

APC chieftain lauds Amosun on creation of local govts

Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Olamikekan Bakare has praised Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s plan to create additional  councils.

He said the initiative will speed up development and enhance grassroots politics. Bakare, who  hails from Imobi, Ijebu East District, said the existing local governments are inadequate to enhance the quality of life.

He said: “I so much believe in the governor’s initiative because breaking the local government areas into smaller units will definitely allow developments to spread to the rural areas which to me, mean that the governor has his people at mind and it is a welcome development.”

Bakare urged members of the National Assembly to work for the progress of the country to avoid electoral protest by voters.

He said: “Our senators and members of the House of Representatives should stop playing politics at this period when Nigerians are expecting good governance as promised by the APC government. The nation’s interest should be more paramount to the legislators than their personal interests.

“Our legislators must be serious and get set for business of governance rather than fighting unnecessary cause, Nigerians are full of expectations of good governance as promised by the APC government. And I expect our people to have prepared themselves for this course. Our party, APC must not fail Nigerians because it’s the hope of the nation at this period.”

Bakare advised Nigerians to be patient with the President Muhammadu Buhari, noting that his six weeks in office has brought more improvement to the country.

Dankwambo, Ambode, Ahmed, Ortom, Oshiomhole, Amosun, others preach peace, patriotism

GOVERNORS have implored religious, traditional and community leaders as well as their followers to pray for sustainable peace as Muslim end Ramadan fast.

They urged the citizens to be patriotic and live in peace, irrespective of their religious or ethnic differences.

Gombe State Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, in his goodwill message as part of the celebration, said Nigerians should imbibe tolerance and mutual respect for one another to attain “sustainable peace, which is a catalyst for the development of our dear state and country”.

“As we are aware, no meaningful development can take place in an atmosphere of rancour and acrimony. We should, therefore, be tolerant with each other and encourage peaceful coexistence among our diverse people,” he added.

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, urged the citizens to rededicate themselves to the cause of a peaceful and prosperous Lagos, where residents, regardless of ethnic, religious or social status, can prosper.

The governor, in the Eid-el-Fitri message, said it was only by embracing peace, unity and fairness that Nigerians could put the country back on its leadership pedestal.

He urged them to embrace the tenets of love, tolerance, forgiveness and brotherhood, which characterised the period of the holy month.

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom felicitated with the state Muslim Community on the occasion of this year’s Eid-el-fitr celebration.

He rejoiced over the peaceful co-existence between adherents of the various faith – in the state, especially in the spirit of this year’s joint breaking of fast between Christians and Muslims.

The governor, however, regretted his inability to extend the usual courtesies due for such seasons on account of dwindling finances of the state.

He promised to meet such obligations when the financial fortunes of the state improve.

Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed urged Nigerians to imbibe the lessons of Ramadan, especially the values of good neghbourliness, patriotism and respect for the sanctity of human life.

Ahmed, in an Eid-el-Fitri message by his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Abdulwahab Oba, identified greed and selfishness as causes of Nigeria’s socio-political, economic and security problems.

He emphasised that if Nigerians demonstrate the kind of compassion and love for one another as displayed during Ramadan, Nigeria would surmount its numerous challenges and become a role model to other nations.

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose urged Muslims to rededicate themselves to the service of their country as they mark this year’s Eid-el-Fitri.

The governor, in his Sallah message, enjoined Nigerians not to lose sight of the gains and lessons of the Ramadan fasting as they go about their daily activities.

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole asked Muslims to exhibit the true spirit of peace and love in their daily dealings with men of all faith, saying Islam as a religion of peace abhors violence in whatever guise.

The governor, who congratulated the Muslim Ummah on the success of this year’s Ramadan, urged them to inculcate the lessons learnt during the Ramadan fast to positively impact on their neighbours and the society.

To Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun, the nation will overcome its challenges and emerge a strong, united and prosperous nation.

In a message by the Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, the governor stated that “the attributes of self-discipline, compassion, brotherliness and patriotism exhibited during the holy month of Ramadan, if sustained, we will attain the dreams of our founding fathers for a united and prosperous nation.”

Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko hailed the people of the state for embracing the Residency Card initiative.

Besides, he admonished Muslims not to return to habits they dropped  before  the Rammadan.

The governor called on Muslims  to sustain the lessons of  Ramadan by allowing the “God-like characters they lived all through the period of the Ramamdan to become a way of life for them”.

  • Awo, Amosun and LG autonomy

SIR: I wish to add my voice to the on-going debate on local government autonomy in Nigeria which has gained national lime light since the reins of power was passed on to President Muhammad Buhari on May 29.

In the past few weeks, Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun has been a delight to men of reason in Ogun State in particular and Nigeria in general for his insistence on local government autonomy in the country. He has spoken unambiguously on this issue. He is a lone voice of wisdom among the 36 governors in the country who has taken up the gauntlet on the issue. For this attribute, he is following the footsteps of Chief Obafemi Awolowo who tackled the issue of federalism head on.

The name of Chief Awolowo was encrusted in gold for championing the political restructuring of Nigeria through his call for a federal system of government. The principle of federalism as enshrined the current Nigerian constitution was rooted in the pressure that Chief Awolowo and other progressive contemporaries brought to bear against a centrist government in the 1950s and 1960s.

Same way, the name of Senator Amosun will be written in gold among the exponents of local government autonomy in Nigeria. The tenacity with which Chief Awolowo championed the principle of federalism as desirable for the progress of the country is the same tenacity deplored by Senator Amosun to root for local government autonomy in Nigeria.

The principle of federalism places the responsibility of decision making on the federating units rather than allow the central government decide on issues that impinge directly on the people. Similarly, local government autonomy being promoted by Senator Amosun will bring government nearer to the people and local constituencies in the country.

These two structures of government, federalism and local government autonomy, are like twins born of same mother. Therefore, it is an anathema of the highest order to find federalism in the statutes books of the country while local government autonomy is jettisoned.
