Obasanjo, the big masquerade of my re – election- Amosun

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has acknowledged the immense role of ex – President Olusegun Obasanjo in his re – election success.

Amosun who was appreciating the people of the state for their support that ensured the success of his first term tenure as well as the re – election at the polls last April 11, described Obasanjo as the “big masquerade” whose support brought much goodwill to him(Amosun).

He said Obasanjo deserved a special mention and commendation.

Obasanjo whose name elicited deafening ovation when Amosun mentioned him for commendation, was not at the stadium but his wife, Mrs Bola Obasanjo, was in attendance.

Amosun said:”but, as Yoruba use to say, that Egun Nla lo n gbe yin Igbale ( the big masquerade is the last at the shrine) let me specially appreciated our Baba, former President, Baba Olusegun Obasanjo” he could not finished his remarks before the crowd went into frenzy.

“He could not be here, because he is in Abuja, but, we have his wife; our mother with us here. I say you are recognized Mama.”

The political relationship between Obasanjo and Amosun was rekindled following what the former President openly admitted as the Governor’s impressive performance in the areas of infrastural development, urban renewal, palpable security, clean and safer environment of Ogun state

Also, the Director General of the Sen. Ibikunle Amosun Campaign Organization during the 2015 electioneering period, Chief Bode Mustapha, lauded Obasanjo for the Amosun re – election.

“He is not sentimental about the positive rebuilding mission in the state, and that is Obasanjo for you. So, for the people of Ogun state to have given him that cheers, it is a lesson for all that there is always reward for everything,” Mustapha said.

  • Advice for Amosun

    Advice for Amosun

The Methodist Church, Nigeria, yesterday urged Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun to make the sustenance of the relative “peace and security” in the state part of his second term priorities.

The Church, which lauded Amosun for the return of peace to the state, said the tempo should not only be sustained, but also improved upon.

The Archbishop of Remo, Ijebu, Yewa and Egba Diocese, Rev Luke Odubanjo, spoke at a briefing yesterday in Abeokuta, the state capital.

Rev Odubanjo said the Church’s Prelate, His Emminence, Chukwuemeka Uche, will visit the state next week.

He advised Amosun to create more jobs for the youth and graduates.

The Archbishop also called on the governor to return missionary schools to their  owners.

Rev Odubanjo said the government lacks the resources to singlehandedly provide education for the citizens.

He noted that the church is a good human resource manager and has been contributing to the building and development of people.

The Archbishop recalled that the late Premier of Old Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the late Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, the late Dr Tai Solarin were some of the  products of the Methodist Church’s mission schools.

  • Amosun, beware of second term curse

SIR: Second term tickets by elected officials always seems a very hard task with most active only during their first tenure. The believe of an average Nigerian is that the winning second term ticket is a grand avenue to blindly loot the state treasury.

The performance of Babatunde Raji Fashola, the out – going governor of Lagos State has raised the bar performance during second term for governors not only in the South-west but also in the entire country.

As an indigene of Ogun State which is ranked among the highly intellectual states in the country, I was highly impressed by the first term performance of our dear governor Senator Ibikunle Amosun. His performance within three years clearly outclassed the performance of a governor who had earlier spent eight years in the saddle.

Amosun clearly touched all facet of governance in the state hence the massive votes that saw him emerge to continue his good work.

However, outside the euphoria of electoral victory, I sincerely commend him for not just sitting back to enjoy the dancing and clapping that followed his victory. He did surprised me by signing the light rail project contract that will improve the transport system in the state.

The governor should endeavour to complete all the projects embarked upon during his first term and fulfill all the electoral promises he made during his campaign which include youth employment creation, women empowerment, medical and health services and care for the old pensioners and the civil servants.

The governor should avoid the booby traps set by the opposition to frustrate his planned lines of action and avoid the curse of the second time in office. It is on record that most governors that perform creditably well during their first term always misbehave, become power drunk and forget their immediate consistuency which is the people of the state.

Example abounds in our state – Ogun and other states – of the prodigal acts of second term governors who virtually turn their state into their personal estate. Governor Amosun please avoid the traps. Avoid the curse of second term. May God continue His good work in your life.

    Revisit airport, says Amosun

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has called on the Federal Government to resuscitate the abandoned international airport project initiated 10 years ago.

The governor spoke at the site of the proposed airport at Imosan village, Wasimi, in Ewekoro Local Government Area.

Amosun said he had written to the Federal Government to complete the project, noting that since its benefits to the government and the people are immense, government cannot afford to abandon it.

He said though the project is a Federal Government sponsored project, the state is ready to facilitate it to improve the lot of its people.

“The perimeter fencing had been done. It is five by five kilometres. The survey and design are in place, but for the way we are as a nation, it was stalled but at least we can physically see that the project does exist and we can only wish it gets to the advanced stage,” Amosun added.

  • Amosun: blame NNPC for pipeline vandalism

Amosun: blame NNPC for pipeline vandalism

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has blamed the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for the routine vandalisation of its pipelines.

Amosun said the ineptitude of the NNPC and its inability to secure pipelines in the state are partly responsible for the attacks on the facilities by vandals.

The governor spoke yesterday when he visited the scene of vandalised pipelines on Iperu-Ogere Road in Ikenne Local Government.

He said vandalism is also a reflection of the state of the economy.

Amosun lamented that two cases of pipeline vandalism have occurred in the state this week.

A similar one at Arepo,  last week, left an expectant mother dead.

He recalled that when he drew the attention of President Goodluck Jonathan to the problem in 2012  and also suggested ways of combating the menace, the President did nothing about it.

Amosun said: “Vandalism is a daily occurrence which shows the state of our nation.

“I still maintain that NNPC is part of the problem because it is the agency assigned to ensure that things like this do not happen.

“This is either dereliction of duty or neglect on the part of the agency.

“I don’t know how as a nation we can prevent a recurrence.

“I mentioned some solutions in 2012 when I visited Arepo and when President Jonathan invited me to his office but nothing has been done about it till now.”

He said there is likely complicity of influential Nigerians, adding that governors should be involved in checkmating the vandals.

Amosun said it is unbelievable that the Federal Government could assign the task of securing pipelines to  a group of people “in this age and time when technology and relevant security agencies are in place”.

He urged the Federal Government to employ the services of credible stakeholders and security agencies to protect the facilities.

The state government had last Monday signed an agreement with the Chinese Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC) for the construction of light railway project in the state.

The Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Adeoluwa Taiwo, signed the contract documents on behalf of Ogun State, while the Chairman of CCECC, Mr. Cao BaoGang, signed for the construction firm.
