  • Amosun to resuscitate Lagos-Ilaro railway

The Ogun State government will leverage on the agricultural sub-sector of the state economy to jump start its industrial revolution of the state for socio economic development.

To effectively achieve this, the State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, said that the government is reconstructing the old railway line that passes through Yewa South and North and Ifo Local Government areas.

It was a triumphant entry for the governor as thousands of party supporters, market men and women, artisans, traditional rulers welcomed him on his working tour of the local government, which is in the Ogun West Senatorial District of the state.

Everywhere he went, he was cheered by jubilant supporters who thronged the empire field, venue of the rally.

Reasons for the love and appreciation might not be unconnected with the monumental infrastructure and the giant strides of the administration in the quest to rebuild the socio-economic development of the state which residents said has brought a new lease of life.

Addressing the thousands of residents of the local government who came out to celebrate him, Governor Amosun said that the resuscitation of the old light railway line which runs through Lagos, Ilaro and Idogo would put agriculture in the area in a pride of place as it would ease transportation of agricultural produce.

While assuring residents of more development, Governor Amosun also promised not to betray the confidence reposed in him by the people of the state.

  • More projects coming to Ota, says Amosun

More projects coming to Ota, says Amosun

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has said the Palm Mall would resuscitate the Gateway Hotel Ota and boost business in the area.

The mall, which is expected to serve Ota and its environs, will be replicated in other major cities, such as Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode and Sagamu.

Amosun spoke yesterday in Ota, when he visited Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area as part of his assessment tour of the 20 local governments.

It was a wet day but the governor, who was accompanied by the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunmbi Ishola and the Council Chairman, Rotimi Rahaman, defied the rain to address the residents.

Amosun announced that the world’s biggest ceramic manufacturing company would inaugurate a state-of-the-art factory in Ogun State next year.  He described the state as the nation’s industrial hub.

The governor expressed happiness that the development strides of the present administration get front page mention in the media.

“I am happy to note that the past three years have ushered in an era where the state is on the front pages of newspapers for good reasons. “We have been adjudged the industrial hub of the nation and one of the best states to do business and in the nearest future, we hope to become the nation’s commercial capital.

“The world’s biggest ceramic manufacturing company would inaugurate its factory in our state next year.

“It is no longer news that we are the nation’s industrial capital, even the President attested to it during the inauguration of a factory.

Amosun decried the delay and inconsistency in the federal monthly allocation.

He said he had been able to run the state, pay workers’ salary on time by thinking out of the box, without putting unnecessary stress on residents.

The governor inaugurated a health centre built in Otun Ota, noting that the state’s increased Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) was a testament to what Ogun will become.

He said a new power plant that will serve Agbara Industrial Area would be built within the local government.

  • When hunters endorsed Amosun

It was a rare welcome and a surprising one at that. Governor Ibikunle Amosun got a heroic welcome from hunters at Owode in Obafemi – Owode Local Government Area with dozens of gunshot salute.

The hunters (Olode), some of whom adorned themselves with hides and skin extracted from their game – deer, antelope and leopard, shot intermittently into the air as Amosun sets foot on the town and same feat was repeated when he mounted the podium to address the people.

They also pledged to work assiduously for the actualisation of the Governor’s second term ambition.

The Governor was in Owode, the headquarters of Obafemi – Owode Local government area in continuation of the tour of the state, ostensibly to ascertain how his programmes and policies have impacted on them in the last three and half years.

Head of the state’s hunters association, Obafemi – Owode Local government branch, Mr Najeem Adetokunbo, said Amosun has earned their support for his 2015 ambition, citing the prevalent peace in the state, the clean and safe environment as well as infrastructural and urban renewal efforts as reasons for the decision.

Adetokunbo said hunting is their occupation and appealed to the Governor to help them facilitate the process of obtaining licenced gun and also support hunters’ competition.

Addressing the people, Amosun pledged to build more roads in the area, establish standard hospital and also create at least three Local Government Development Areas (LCDA) out of the present Obafemi – Owode Local Government Area.

  • Sagamu to Amosun: we’re grateful but give us more

The people of Sagamu in Remo division of Ogun State have expressed gratitude to the state government for the facelift given to their community, but they are asking Governor Ibikunle Amosun for more developmental projects in their area. ERNEST NWOKOLO reports

Sagamu, the royal home of the Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Adeniyi Sonarinwo, and a melting pot of the nation’s major tribes has witnessed an unprecedented level of development in recent time courtesy of the Ogun State government and the residents are forever grateful.

Strategically located mid-point between Lagos and Ibadan on the ever busy Lagos-Benin Expressway, the town is highly accessible to almost all tribes because of its central location and this has given it a sort of mini-Nigeria image.

Also, after the industrial towns of Agbara and Ota, it is about the third industrial haven in Ogun State, hosting a plethora of big companies including Lafarge Cement, Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mosinmi depot, International Cement Company that is just berthing there among others.

But the residents have their worries. In spite of the ongoing infrastructural development of the area by the state government, they said this is not catching up with the speed of urbanisation and population upsurge in the ancient town that is equally fast assuming the status of a megacity.

They are expressing the fear that Sagamu may soon slipped into the path of the seamy side of Aba, the commercial nerve centre of Abia State, notorious for filthiness, disorderliness, broken down roads and chaotic striving if federal, state and local governments do not embark upon strategic development there to reverse the creeping decadence.

The chiefs and monarchs – Chief Olumuyiwa Sonuga, Oba Omobola Oduwaye, Oba Solomon Oyenuga among others who gathered recently in the town to deliberate on its 30th festival day, said accessibility within Sagamu township is poor, laborious and often takes the Israelis – like journey before one could connect point B or C from A following the deplorable state of roads.

Citing Oba Awolesi Erinwole road, a major artery to the town which has remained deplorable in the last decade, they urged the federal and state governments to fix it because of its strategic importance to movement of goods and persons.

The road connect to the Lagos – Benin Expressway and leads to such places as the Asoludero home of ex – Governor Gbenga Daniel, Lafarge Cement factory, NNPC (Mosinmi depot), Odongunyan Military barrack and Ikorodu town in Lagos state among others.

Sonuga, a civil engineer and President of the Sagamu Development Association (SDA), said the Sagamu people aren’t “crying wolves” over Oba Awolesi road “ as poor construction and maintenance” have ensured its steady sorry state.

Describing Oba Awolesi road as impassable, he rued that gullies and craters have ruined it, and urged the federal government to reconstruct it while calling on the state government to, as matter of urgent intervention, build a fly – over bridge across it at the junction where the road connects with the Lagos – Benin Expressway as was done in Ijebu – Ode at  Mabolufon junction.

Sonuga who lauded Governor Ibikunle Amosun for the dualisation of Akarigbo Road and the fly- over bridge at the Sabo area of the town, said another fly – over when constructed  at Lagos – Benin Expressway end of Oba Awolesi road, would not only make entry and exit easy at that busy junction, but also safe for motorists, pedestrians, commuters and Sagamu residents.

According to him, accidents are frequent occurrences at that spot, recalling a fatal one that happened there three weeks ago as case in point.

Also, Oba Oduwaye, who is the Onifojege of Fojege, appreciated the state governments for the “developmental projects being executed in the town and environs,” however also called on the Governor to build a fly – over bridge at the expressway junction of Oba Awolesi road for the safety of the people.

But Amosun who visited Sagamu last week while on tour of the Local government pledged to build more access and safe roads in Sagamu.

Also, the Secretary to the Sagamu Local government Council,(SSLG), Mr Isiaka Salami, who promised palliative measures would be carried out on the town’s roads when the rainy season subsides, blamed residents for their deplorable condition.

“We are the problems behind the condition of the roads. Residents keep dumping refuse on the drainages and block them. When it rains, the water forces itself onto the roads and wash them away.

“That is why you see gullies and craters here and there. Although, there has been shortfalls in money accruing to the local government from the federation account but we will do some palliative measures when the rains subside.”

  • Govt not owing salaries, says Amosun

Govt not owing salaries, says Amosun

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun said yesterday that the government was not owing salaries.

He said his administration inherited N2.4billion from his predecessor on the payroll of the Tai Solarin College of Education (TASCE) alone.

The governor urged the institution’s workers to dialogue with the government rather than protesting. Amosun spoke at a tour of Ijebu Ode Local Government.

He said: “If the government pays such huge amount of money, it will collapse and won’t be able to do other projects.

“Few days ago, our lecturers protested the non-payment of their arrears.

“When I was coming, I saw some placards with inscription, such as “Amosun pay our 48-month arrears” but I want to tell you that we do not owe anybody in the state.

“We will invite you again and fine-tune things. But let me say this because we are responsible to you.

“As we are speaking, Amosun and the Ogun State government do not owe anybody in the state.

“We do not intend to owe anybody and we will not owe. If I say I will pay the money once, the government will collapse but we will pay gradually.”

The paramount ruler of Ijebu land, Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Chief Imam of Ijebu, Abdlerasaq Salaudeen and leaders in Ijebu have endorsed Amosun for a second term.

The monarch said: “The people will repay your good works in the 2015 election. What we have seen in this administration has not been experienced in Ogun East Senatorial District before.

“In December, I will celebrate my 55th coronation anniversary and I have never experienced such in the past.

“The two flyover bridges here have contributed to the development of Ijebu land..”

Salaudeen said: “We accept our governor the way other zones in the state accepted him. We even accept him more than them. We pray that God gives him more knowledge and strength to move the state forward.”

Speaking on behalf of other leaders, M.O Olaiya, urged the people to consider the good work the governor had done.

  • Amosun’s aides, others injure in bus, convoy collision

Amosun’s aides, others injure in bus, convoy collision

Two aides of Governor Ibikunle Amosun and some occupants of a commercial Mitsubishi bus conveying foodstuffs were injured yesterday morning when the passenger bus ran into one of the Sports Utility Vehicles(SUV) in the convoy of the governor.

The accident occurred at about 9.30am on Sapaade-Ogere, Ogun State, stretch of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway when the governor was travelling to Ekiti State.

The affected jeep in the convoy was damaged.

According to a source, the vehicles in Amosun’s convoy were going in the direction of Ibadan, Oyo State, when the rickety bus coming at the opposite end crashed into one of them.

It was learnt that the accident occurred at a failed portion of the road, where repair work was being carried out.

The driver of the commercial bus, it was gathered, lost control when he came face-to-face with  convoy at the bad portion  and rammed into  it.

The women in the commercial bus were said to have been injured even as the governor alighted to sympathise with them.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Yusuph Olaniyonu, who confirmed this to reporters, said no life was lost.

He noted that it was just a minor accident as nobody sustained injury.

He said: “We are going to Ekiti. Only one jeep was affected and we have transferred the occupants to our own bus.”

  • Ameyo’s apparition and Amosun’s ecstasy

It is imaginable that she was an unseen presence at the show, and possibly other ethereal beings were in attendance.  “Why not now?” she might have wondered.  Those in a position to answer the question could easily have acted in a way that would have made the poser out of the question. But because they didn’t, the September 29 National Honours’ investiture seemed like an event that had lost its soul and had become soulless; these two conditions may not be the same.

Speaking of souls, particularly the souls of the dead, perhaps such apparitions were at the venue, International Conference Centre, Abuja, just to see the spectacle organised by the living dead.  Or is there a better description for those who are biologically alive but morally dead?

The celebration of deadened consciousness, which the event projected on account of glaring and jarring omissions in the list of awardees, represented yet another instance of institutional insensitivity. In this specific case, the institution is no other than the country’s presidency, or more precisely, the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

It would take a phenomenal leap of the imagination to grasp the administration’s tactless treatment of the memory of those who recently paid the ultimate price and made a supreme sacrifice for the country. It would probably be more appropriate to call it an egregious insult which the departed do not deserve.

What is even more unacceptably unthinking and unfeeling is the brusque defence by Dr Doyin Okupe, Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Jonathan, who reportedly said via his Twitter account that the national honours were not given posthumously.  It is instructive that between September 19 when the full list of awardees was publicised and September 29 when they were decorated, there were loud calls from concerned quarters highlighting the nauseating exclusion.

Two of such wake-up calls will suffice. The Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Cross River State chapter, Dr. Callistus Enyuma, said: “One would expect that she should not be neglected when honours are given. I believe it is not too late for her to be included on the honours’ list. She must have that honour.” Next, the President of Jojaina Deck of the National Association of Seadogs, Mr. Fabian Avoh, said: “Let us ask the Federal Government or precisely the presidency what yardstick was used in including all sorts of people on the list of the highest honour in the land when Adadevoh, who sacrificed her life, was not on the list.”

In a reasonable context, the inclusion of Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh who died on August 19 should have been beyond question, even if by way of special mention at the event and by immortalising her.  She was the most prominent among the country’s health care workers who died of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) after contracting it from the Liberian- American Patrick Sawyer who brought it into the country and died from it on July 25. It is noteworthy that the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, said of her role: “She it was who took the initiative to intimate the ministry concerning the index case; and substantially to her credit, the moderate containment achieved we owe to her and her colleagues.” There is no doubt that the professional intervention of Adadevoh and others arrested the possibility of a wide-spread dispersal of the deadly virus. The Jonathan administration must be suffering from inattentional blindness.

Even more intriguing is the likelihood that the government may also be afflicted with complicated confusion. Two days after the disquieting silence on the EVD-related deaths of health care personnel who worked at First Consultants Medical Centre, Obalende, Lagos, Jonathan referred to the tragedies superficially. He said in his October 1 address on the country’s 54th Independence Day: “I appreciate and welcome the spirit of collaboration, unity and partnership with which we confronted the threat of the Ebola Virus Disease. I thank all Nigerians for working together to prevent what could have become a major epidemic. I particularly thank the medical personnel, some of whom paid the ultimate sacrifice.” Could this be interpreted as thanking the dead for dying?   What a way to reward heroic self-sacrifice!

Interestingly, Jonathan’s idea of reward seemed suspect, if not mischievous, especially in connection with three personalities who made this year’s national honours’ list of 305 awardees: the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a former governor of Edo State, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun; and the Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, who is on his way out, having lost controversially in the June governorship election to Ayo Fayose of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) . Considering that the men are members of the APC, the intensely critical opposition party with a strong ambition to rule the country, their inclusion may have been no more than a wily attempt to present the Jonathan administration and the PDP as perhaps dispassionate and uninfluenced by zero-sum mentality. They were given the title, Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

It is food for thought that these particular honourees, who could have exploited the publicity opportunity to further rubbish the administration and what it stands for by maintaining a respectable distance, chose the path of counter-productive accommodation. Odigie-Oyegun was represented at the ceremony. Fayemi, rather than be in Abuja to receive the national honour, attended the opening ceremony of the Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi Centre for Gender and Social Policy Studies donated by his wife to the Obafemi Awolwo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. He was quoted as saying: “It is thus at great cost that I am here in demonstration of my dedication to a worthy cause. Nothing can be more important than this. The CON can be posted to me by courier, but nobody can post this to me.”  In both cases, there was a sufficient indication of acceptance.

Amosun surpassed them by displaying a petty ecstasy. Not only did he attend the investiture, he apparently got carried away. Listen to him: “When you are given an award like this, you are honoured; it is a call for more service. It is like describing an elephant; it is from the perspective from which you are looking at it. Yes, there may be one or two misgivings about it; people will talk anyway. I think whoever is given, it is a call to serve more, render selfless service to the nation and to our different states.”

It would appear that Amosun may not have reflected on the governmental performance of the giver. Has Jonathan himself shown a satisfactory understanding of the concept of service in political office?  Why would he desire to encourage what may be indeed alien to him? What is the subtext of this dramatic political scheming?

Pray for Nigeria, Amosun charges Muslims

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has urged Nigerian Muslims to use the occasion of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir to pray to almighty Allah for peace and continued coexistence of the country.

He noted that the much needed development of the country can only be achieved in an atmosphere of peace, which is being threatened by the continued activities of insurgents.

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mrs Olufunmilayo Wakama, Amosun said: “I want to enjoin our Muslim brothers and sisters to always pray for Nigeria.

“The much needed development can only be achieved and enjoyed when there is peace in the land.”

Amosun also called on the Muslim faithful to continue to offer prayers as the country prepares for the 2015 general election.

He congratulated the entire Muslim umaah and wished them a happy celebration.

Amosun: I’m shocked by her sudden death

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has expressed sadness on the death of a top female journalist and former presidential spokesperson, Dame Felicia Oluwaremilekun Oyo.

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media, Mrs. Olufunmilayo Wakama, Amosun said he was shocked by the sudden death of the veteran journalist, describing it as a big loss to the media industry.

He said: “Dame Oyo was not only an icon in journalism, but also a trailblazer in the pen profession, who was well respected in the media world. I recall those days at the Villa, when I was a senator. I used to marvel at her energy and dedication to duty as the senior special assistant on media and publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo between 2003 and 2007.”

    Amosun rues Chibok girls’ captivity

gun State Governor Senator Ibikunle Amosun lamented yesterday the celebration of the country’s 54th Independence anniversary without the release of the over 200 Chibok school girls.

He said they are part of the future leaders, adding that had President Goodluck Jonathan believed early that they were abducted, they would probably have been rescued.

The governor spoke at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta.

He said unless the right leadership was put in place, the country’s march to greatness would take a long time.
