I’m not competing with Osoba, help me beg him, Amosun tells Ogun people

Senator Ibikunle Amosun yesterday said he would do everything within his power to settle the rift between him and Chief Segun Osoba, appealing to the elders and people of Ogun State to help him beg the ex – governor for forgiveness if he has done wrong.

Amosun said he is neither in “competition with Osoba” whom he called his “leader” nor anybody, adding that he would continue to accord him utmost respect at all times.

The Governor who spoke during a live programme of the Abeokuta – based Rock-City 101.9 FM radio station and monitored by The Nation, said the Office of Governor is temporary but added that he has come to develop the state and then leave a legacy that would outlive him.

According to him, he is not ignorant of the fact that no politician would want to go into the general elections with a divided house or in an atmosphere of division and acrimony as such, rarely profit anybody.

He revealed that the debt profile which stood at about N40bn last month, has crashed to N36bn. He said that, Ogun does not owe the fabulous N300bn debt being peddled about, by “mischievous persons” out to put wool over the eyes of residents and friends of the state.

Amosun noted that his administration has had to pass through “strenuous and difficult approach” to source funds from banks, to enable it execute its many capital projects among others, across the state in the last three years.

He said: “opposition said we have borrowed over N300bn debts to finance our projects. They are just liars. No bank in Nigeria can lend any government more than N25bn. What they don’t know is that, we have increased our IGR to more than N5bn monthly from initial N730m we met.”

According to him, the highest credit facility ever collected at a time by the administration is about N15bn managed in such a way that the debt profile does not exceed N40bn.

He declared that the administration inherited crippling debt burden, left for it to carry by his predecessor which is being settled in bits. But that in civilized climes, such people that plunged Ogun State into needless liability, should be walking on the streets in palpable remorse, and perhaps made to face justice.

Conference delegates praise Amosun on projects

Ogun State’s delegates to the National Conference have praised Governor Ibikunle Amosun -led administration for giving a face-lift to the state within three years.

The delegates, who hailed the governor’s urban renewal programme, spoke in Abeokuta during an inspection of the ongoing projects within the state capital, together with Amosun.

The leader of the delegation, Senator Femi Okurounmu, noted that the projects are of high standard and worthy.

He said: “The new housing estates built for different classes of people and the road projects have been instrumental in opening up the state to opportunities.

“I must commend your efforts. You have transformed the state within these three years. We saw the flyover bridges and super highways in Abeokuta, which are also being replicated in other parts of the state. They are of very high standard. The Ogun standard is something we should be very proud of.”

On his part, Senator Kola Bajomo expressed delight that unborn children would appreciate the state’s government efforts, adding that the infrastructure put in place by the administration “speak to the present and future.”

“These projects are not stories, but physical things that we have all seen. Being impressed is an understatement. The schools, road infrastructure, housing estates for various categories of workers are well integrated.

“Our unborn children will appreciate this administration. The government needs a lot of support from all and sundry,’’ Bajomo stated.

In her remarks, Prof. Titi Filani described the model schools structure as very fantastic, particularly the good ventilation, numerous rooms as well as introduction of communication technology and technical education, which he said are enough hope for the educational system of the state.

  • Amosun admonishes corps members on community development

Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has charged corps members across the country to come up with ground breaking community development projects that will impact positively on the lives of residents of their places of primary assignments.

He also urged them to discourage any act of violence that could put them in disrepute as leaders of tomorrow, but rather strive to be partners in progress in their various communities.

Amosun, who gave this advice at the closing ceremony and terminal parade of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) 2014 Batch B Orientation Course held at NYSC Orientation Camp, Sagamu, said corps members should endeavour to keep the scheme’s flag flying in their quest for new grounds without attempting to drop the ball.

He charged them to contribute their quota through selfless service in order to leave remarkable imprint on the sands of time.

He also admonished them to move and relate freely with their host communities as well as share the hopes and aspirations of the people of the state.

“I want to congratulate you on the successful completion of the rigourous and captivating three weeks orientation course. This one year of compulsory national service is a time your God-given talents and energy would be fully stretched from time-to-time.

“Make sure you contribute your quota through selfless service to your host communities. I charge you to keep the flag flying and possibly, strive to break new grounds. Come up with ground breaking community development projects that will impact positively on their lives.

“As good ambassadors of the country to your various locations where you will spend the next one year, apply caution in your activities. Shun violence and discourage any act that can truncate the peace being enjoyed in the state,” Amosun urged.

While commending the dogged determination and visionary skills of the brains behind the scheme established for over four decades, Amosun

pointed out  that the NYSC scheme remained one of the unifying factors that has survived this long in spite of the twin scourge of terrorism and economic downturn facing the nation.

He charged employers to discourage the idea of rejecting corps members posted to their organisations, assuring that “the state government would not relent in providing the necessary ambience for a hitch-free service year.”

The governor reiterated that the state’s board of the NYSC which was inaugurated recently, would further see to the welfare of the corps members and strengthen the existing structure.

Amosun promised openness to partnering with any willing individuals or organisations in the tireless efforts to maintain security of lives and property in the state.

  • Mark, Amosun, Oshiomhole, others hail Soyinka at 80

Mark, Amosun, Oshiomhole, others hail Soyinka at 80

Governors, lawmakers, scholars, critics and other frontline Nigerians yesterday poured encomiums on Nobel Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka on his 80th birthday.

They noted that Soyinka has been one of the most outstanding contributors to Nigeria’s educational growth, knowledge and global Literature.

Senate President David Mark said Soyinka is a rare breed of the writer and intellectual.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by his Chief Press Secretary, Paul Mumeh, the Senate President said Soyinka has been touching lives and shaping the future of younger generations.

He said Soyinka brought pride and honour to Nigeria when he won the Nobel Laureate Prize in 1986.

Mark said: “Prof Soyinka is a pride to Africa. His kinds are few. We cannot appreciate him enough. His intellectual prowess is equal to none. Many successful Nigerians passed through him. Many more would profit from his fountain of knowledge and wisdom.

“As the erudite Professor marks his birthday, I pray and wish him good health, peace and abundant wisdom to continue to contribute to the development of Nigeria.”

He said the Senate and the National Assembly congratulated “this son of Africa and a true citizen of the world on this special occasion of his birthday”.

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun said Soyinka is an international and intellectual icon for his globally  – acknowledged literary accomplishments.

The governor rued the absence of role models for the youth, adding that this does not augur well for the country and its future leaders.

He said this was the reason his administration was always celebrating good things about Ogun State.

According to him, this is to encourage the younger generation to emulate or learn good lessons.

Amosun spoke yesterday at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, the state capital, at a Wole Soyinka project to mark the literary icon’s 80th birthday.

The ceremony featured a spelling competition, a debate and reading contests among selected secondary school pupils.

The governor, who was represented by his Special Assistant on Media(Print), Mr Sola Balogun, urged   youths to aspire to international intellectual figures, like Soyinka, who he said attained his global status through literary works.

Amosun said: “The nice things about Ogun State we are bringing forward so that the younger ones can learn something positive from them. Our youths can challenge themselves to be like Wole Soyinka, who was once a youth.

“You can study to be an international figure. The problem we have now is that we are becoming more and more bereft of quality role models for the youths. But all hope is not lost for Nigeria. We can still pick good role models for ourselves, and in the interest of the family, state and the country.”

Also, former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel described Soyinka as a “rare breed and one of the greatest writers” that has ever lived.

In a congratulatory message, Daniel noted that Soyinka’s literary prowess and advocacy of native culture, humane social order and critiques of repressive military governments stood him out among his contemporaries as a fiery fighter and legendary statesman.

In the statement by his media aide, Mr Ayo Giwa, the former governor said: “Without any doubt, Prof Soyinka’s outspoken criticisms, which earned him extra-judicial arrests and imprisonment, shaped the political history of modern Nigeria in no small measure. They make his comments on national and international issues reference points at different fora.

“The award as a Nobel Laureate in 1986 further cemented his invincibility in his chosen career… No doubt, the ‘Kongi’ has etched his footprints in the sands of time.

“At 80, we cannot but celebrate this fierce fighter and legendary peacemaker whose patriotic ideals have earned a permanent place at national and international Halls of Fame.

“As one of the most celebrated sons of Ogun State, Nigeria and Africa, I share in the joy of the landmark celebration as Ogun State Government did on the occasions of the 70th and 75th birthday anniversaries. I wish the literary giant a very warm birthday and pray for his robust health in years ahead for more colourful years of irreplaceable memories.”

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi said Soyinka’s life and work are sources of inspiration to many.

The governor described the Nobel laureate as an innovative “social change agent” who is constantly seeking a better society for Nigeria, especially through his writing.

“Soyinka’s writings have been a source of inspiration to me. Through original insight and personal convictions, he has been driven by his regard for a fresh society that would subscribe to equity, justice and freedom. We hope to continue to draw for a long time to come from his example,” Amaechi said.

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole said Soyinka remained a source of inspiration and pillar of support.

In a congratulatory message yesterday to the renowned writer, Oshiomhole said: “Over the years, whereas many to whom our nation has given so much often conduct themselves in a manner that undermines national unity. But, Soyinka, who has brought global glory to Nigeria, has done more to cement our nationhood without demanding much. You have not only written volumes seeking to cement our nationhood, but at some point even had to endure 20-month solitary confinement to keep Nigeria one.

“As a global statesman today, your greatness lies not only in your extra-ordinary literary talent and creativity but also the tireless energy you always exert in the pursuit of your convictions.

“For you, art is nothing if not deployed as a weapon to extend the frontiers of liberty and elevate the human civilisation. From your classic, titled: The Man Died, we draw timeless inspiration never to be afraid of telling truth to power. That it is more honourable to die fighting on our feet than on our knees before the oppressors.

“As a hardcore labour man myself with the privilege of leading the Nigerian workers’ movement as a two-term president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), I attest that you are a true comrade at the barricade in the true sense of the word.

“In the popular resistance of military dictatorships in the 1990s, you joined us on countless occasions on the street to fight for freedom. Even when the ‘Praetorian Guard’ drove you into exile and sentenced you to death in absentia, you never failed to connect with those of us left at the barricade at home to deepen the struggle for liberation.

“With the return of democracy in 1999, age would still not deter you from joining us in street marches against government’s anti-people policies, even in the face of the ambush of armoured tanks.

“For us, the government and good people of Edo State, you have remained a source of inspiration and pillar of support, in our determined effort to liberate our people from the shackles of political oppression by a few political ‘godfathers’ and expand, in a meaningful way, the frontiers of good governance, democracy and development.”

Acclaimed poet Prof Niyi Osundare said Soyinka’s contribution to Literature is groundbreaking.

He noted that the globally renowned writer is “epochal and phenomenal” in his writing.

Osofisan described Soyinka as “an outstanding personality”, adding that words are not enough for a tribute to the literary giant.

According to him, Soyinka is an inspiration to younger generations of writers.

He said: “One significant contribution, however, is his creation of what I will describe as a ‘condition of plausibility’ for the existence of an authentic African drama in the English language. After him, all of us became empowered, and credible.”

  • Ogun has attracted $7.3 billion investments, says Amosun

Ogun has attracted $7.3 billion investments, says Amosun

About $7.3 billion has been invested in Ogun State in the last two years.

Governor Ibikunle Amosun revealed this yesterday in Abeokuta, the state capital, at the opening of the second Ogun Investors’ Forum, themed: “Agriculture and Urban Development: Ogun State, the New Frontier.”

Since 2012 when the last investor’s forum was held in Abeokuta, Amosun said over 46 major industries had established their factories in the state.

He said over 30 others were in their various stages of completion. They include Lafarge WAPCO Cement; Wemco Cold Steam Iron Steel factory; May and Baker Pharmaceutical Company; Shongai Plant; Procter and Gamble, which is the largest single American investment in Nigeria, outside the Petroleum sector; Dangote Cement and Nestle Plc, among others.

Amosun said: “The talking point as we speak today is not about who is in Ogun State, but about who is not in Ogun State and this is just the beginning.”

He said the “tremendous” response of investors and industrialists in choosing Ogun State over others informed the theme of this year’s edition of the forum, adding: “We are determined, ambitious and forward looking in our developmental programmes and projects. We are focused on preparing our people and our state for the future because we see Ogun as a state that will play a pivotal role in the future development of Nigeria and Africa by harnessing its natural potentials in Agri-business.”

Urging investors to leverage on the state’s vast land for housing and agriculture, Amosun said his administration allocated over 200,000 hectares of land to investors in agriculture at a minimal cost and will make more land available.

He identified palm oil, palm kernel and rubber cultivation, aquaculture and livestock farming as areas of agriculture with viable business opportunities for investors.

The governor said: “We seek a creative, participatory approach from investors in achieving our dreams of agricultural development and urban renewal. Our approach is not only holistic but futuristic. We are determined to provide housing for majority of people who work in Lagos but live in Ogun.

“We have enough land for large scale farming and investors should also look into waste management and urban landscaping. We are linking our neighbouring states with our light rail system and together we shall walk into the new frontier of development.”

Former Mexican President Vincente Fox, in his keynote address, said Nigeria, especially Ogun, can compete with other developed countries in food production and processing. Fox is optimistic that if the agricultural revolution going on in Ogun is sustained, the “Gateway” state would soon attract developed nations to the country. To actualise this feat, Fox said the state needs to mobilise youths and imbibe in them the ‘can do spirit’.

He urged the government to inculcate commercial and mechanised farming in the educational system and convince youths that they can be successful in life as farmers.

Fox urged the Federal Government to boost the productivity of farmers through technology. He said Mexico, which was not producing enough food before his tenure, has become an agriculture hub, adding “Today, Mexico produces over 70 per cent of foods consumed in the United States and private sector partnership is the secret for achieving the feat.”

Fox said no nation can develop on its own and countries need to partner.

He said: “Private participation is the solution to development, as it builds capacity and saves the government money which can be used in developing other sectors. Government should also build technology, but it should be private sector driven. This is the formula for development.”

Ogun State is seated on a land mass of 16,409.26sq kilometers and over 80 per cent is arable land. The state has a favourable climate for the cultivation of cash and food crops all year round, as well as for livestock rearing.

  • Terrorism is social menace, says Amosun

Terrorism is social menace, says Amosun

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has said terrorism is a social menace.

The governor spoke yesterday in Abeokuta, the state capital, when he received the Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Jonathan Richardson.

He said insurgency is a bane to peaceful co-existence among Nigerians, especially in the Northeast.

Amosun called for a united force to fight the Boko Haram insurgency.

He hailed the Australian government for collaborating with the international community to fight terrorism. The governor prayed for quick restoration of peace in the crisis zones.

Amosun told his visitor that Ogun was the most industrial-based state in Nigeria, maintaining a cordial relationship with reputable firms.

Also, the wife of the  governor, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, has said this year’s Children’s Day on May 27 will be marked with a special prayer among children from parts of the state.

The children will pray as a congregation for the speedy release of the over 200 schoolgirls abducted in Chibok, Borno State, a month ago, she said.

The session may also be a thanksgiving, if the abducted girls are returned before the day.

The prayer session, according to Mrs. Amosun, will hold at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.

  • Amosun promises 1,000 housing units, others to Ogun workers

Amosun promises 1,000 housing units, others to Ogun workers

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has promised to deliver 1,000 housing units for the civil servants.

The governor has also resuscitated car and housing loans to the workers, the people he called the engine room of any government.

Amosun made the promises yesterday during the Workers’ Day celebration at the M.K.O. Abiola International Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta.

The governor said 200 units of the houses would be ready by May 29 and another 500 in December.

He said the others would be delivered later.

Amosun said his administration was committed to prompt payment of workers’ salaries, training and retraining of the workforce.

He said: “In the last 35 months of our administration, we have been unwavering in the discharge of our duty to better the lot of our workers. We have consistently taken the issue of the on-the-job training of our workforce seriously.

“Our administration believes that a well trained and retrained civil service will increase productivity and resultantly raise our administrative competence. Across all cadres and levels of the public service, we have continued to make fund available for this purpose.

“…I must say that I am particularly happy that the era of non-payment of salaries, leave bonus and pension arrears have become a thing of the past in the Ogun State public service. Workers now collect their salaries and various allowances as at when due.

“Only few weeks ago, our administration released N1.5 billion to clear the backlog of pension arrears inherited from the immediate past administration and those that retired in the course of our administration. Let me reassure you that we are fully aware of the vital position occupied by the workers and we would not at any time hesitate to implement other programmes that will make our workforce happy.”

Also, the governor has urged governments at all levels and Nigerians to reflect on the prevailing insecurity in the land, particularly the growing insurgency in the Northeast.

Amosun advised that all hands should be on deck so that insurgency and other vices would not push the country to the brinks

The chairman of the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Ishola Ambali urged all workers and other Nigerians to give peace a chance so that the nation could develop.

Ambali hailed Amosun for his worker-friendly policies, especially the prompt payment of salaries and clearing of backlog of pension arrears, infrastructure, transport, women empowerment and economic development.
