Amosun leads democracy walk, says June 12 is watershed

Over five thousand people on Wednesday walked the major streets and roads of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, in remembrance of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election purportedly won by the late business mogul, Chief M.K.O Abiola.

The walk which began at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, at exactly 7:30 am coursed through the Abiola Way, Sapon, Itokun, and Lafenwa and terminated hours later at the MKO Abiola family house in Isabo area of the state capital, where the crowd were received by Abiola’s younger brother, Alhaji Mubashiru Abiola and Engr. Rahmon Abiola.

The Democracy walk train was led by the state Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, his Deputy, Prince Segun Adesegun, Ogun Assembly Speaker, Prince Suraj Adekumbi, daughter of the late Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, Mrs. Hafsat Abiola – Costello, Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Taiwo Adeoluwa, Ogun State First Lady, Olufunso Amosun, pro – democracy group and other trade unions.

Amosun, who addressed the gathering at the late Abiola’s family house, said June 12 was a watershed in the annals of Nigerian elections and transcends Abiola and his family.

The governor noted that the late politician paid the supreme price to pave way for Nigerians to enjoy the present democracy.

  • ‘Don’t ban us in Ogun’, motorcyclists beg Amosun

‘Don’t ban us in Ogun’, motorcyclists beg Amosun

Commercial motorcyclists yesterday urged Ogun State Governor Ibikuinle Amosun not to ban them from operating in the state.

The motorcyclists, under the aegis of the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Riders’ Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), converged in Abeokuta, the state capial, at a seminar organised for them, tagged: ‘Ride to live’ .

They said a ban on their operation would create more security challenges, increase unemployment and affect many homes.

The association’s Chairman, Chief Samsudeen Apelogun, said commercial motorcycling has created jobs for many people and is contributing to the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) .

Adebayo said: “Banning commercial motorcycles is not the solution to the problems associated with commercial motorcycling. At a point in this country, we had serious problems with fake drugs. The pharmaceutical companies were not shut. The war against fake drugs was initiated and fought seriously.

“The banning of commercial motorcycles by some state governments would do us more harm than good. It is obvious that the level of unemployment has increased and many more youths rendered jobless. If care is not taken, more youths will take to crime.

“Do not forget that financial insecurity is very fundamental and if we are truly serious about making our country a secure place for all, we must give the necessary attention to the financial independence of our people.”

House of Assembly Speaker Suraj Adekunbi and the National President of the association, Sheu Maihula Babangida, were at the event.

She advised children and youths in the state to support and promote her campaign for the going green initiative through tree planting to ensure a sustainable and healthy environment.

Speaking during the Children’s Day celebration/launch of GEFTY initiative at the Moshood Abiola International Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta, Mrs. Amosun said all children and youths are GEFTY ambassadors and they were expected to launch the Ogun State Youth 10,000 Tree Planting exercise, which would be accomplished through 6,000 children present at the ceremony.

She noted that the initiative is geared towards promoting a clean and healthy environment devoid of environmental pollution as well as teaching them to protect their future to contribute to the progress of the state and Nigeria.

“The world is going green and job creation is going green and we do not want our children be left out in the sensitisation of the green initiative. Today, we shall be flagging-off 10,000 tree seedlings to be distributed to our children for planting in their homes and environment to ensure greener and better condition of the environment, she said.”

Mrs Amosun called on parents to join hands with her in uplifting the environment by ensuring their wards are guided through the planting process, enjoining them to educate the youth on recycling techniques and get unemployed youths off the street into the recycling business of turning waste to wealth.

“Let’s educate them on agricultural tree planting and get our unemployed youths off the street into farmland orchards: they should plant fruit trees in tons on acres of land, and in so doing they would sustain the environment whilst earning a living,” she said.

  • Amosun inaugurates panel on Ado-Odo crises

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has inaugurated a Judicial Commission of Enquiry to look into the April 14 and 15 crises in Ado-Odo, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area.

The five-man panel is chaired by Justice Elizabeth Osinuga. The Secretary is Mr. Olumuyiwa Ojo.

The inauguration was held yesterday at the Governor’s Office in Abeokuta, the state capital.

  • Amosun locks out workers for lateness

•‘Sapon-Itoku Bridge’ll be ready by December’

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun yesterday locked out hundreds of civil servants, including commissioners, who were late to their duty posts.

He told them to go back home, if they could not resume at work punctually.

The two gates of the secretariat were locked by 8am on the governor’s order.

The Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Taiwo Adeoluwa, who was appalled by the number of affected workers, warned that the government would not condone such indiscipline any longer.

Adeoluwa said: “This action is a routine exercise to ensure that civil servants know the essence of punctuality and imbibe it as a virtue. It is not aimed at frustrating or scaring anybody. If the governor could make it to the office before 7:30am, there is no excuse for anyone who comes late to work.”

He said late comers would be sanctioned in the future.

The Head of Service, Mrs. Modupe Adekunle, also warned that, henceforth, lateness would be taken seriously.

Also yesterday, Amosun said the Itoku-Sapon Bridge would be ready by December.

He spoke after inspecting the work done on the bridge.

Amosun said: “Many of our people were inconvenienced to pave the way for this bridge, but in the next few months, they are going to see the benefits. We will build shops to take the traders off the roadsides. We are intensifying efforts to build the roads and shops simultaneously to boost economic activities and create wealth.

“I am satisfied with the pace of the work, despite the rainy season. We work everyday and I assure you that by December, the bridge would be completed. Work is in progress and we are not resting on our oars.

“We started demolition last December and construction began in February. When our shops are ready in December, traders whose shops were demolished would use the shops free for a year.”

He said his critics lack the intelligence to appreciate the work done by his administration in the last 23 months, adding that they “are not cerebral and cannot give what they do not have”.

  • Amosun, Ajimobi urge Wemabod to build more houses

Amosun, Ajimobi urge Wemabod to build more houses

Governors Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun) and Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) yesterday urged the management of Wemabod Estate Limited to build low cost houses for the people.

They said this was necessary to grow the economy of the Southwest.

The governors spoke yesterday at the Premier Hotel in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, during the company’s 50th anniversary.

They were represented by the secretaries to the government of both states – Taiwo Adeoluwa (Ogun) and Akin Olajide (Oyo).

Ajimobi urged the company to build 1,000 housing units in Oyo.

Amosun said: “In Nigeria’s peculiar environment, 50 years is a long time. The business environment is harsh and I congratulate Wemabod for surviving.

“Wemabod has kept the legacy alive. We are requesting its presence in Ogun State because this is our common patrimony. Beyond that, it appears most of the things we talk about in Odu’a are things we inherited from our forefathers. It is good to take good care of what we inherited, but we would add more value, if we do things that can serve the coming generation.

“We can think out of the box and leave a good legacy for the coming generation. We hope that the next 20 years will be more glorious. We have the human capital to support you. I will like to see the presence of Wemabod in Ogun State. Those things that we were shown were what we inherited. We will like to see a Wemabod that can break new grounds.”

The Chairman of the occasion, Gen. Adeyinka Adebayo (rtd), said: “I want Wemabod to extend its presence to all Southwest states. I do not want it to limit its activities to Lagos and Oyo.

“I hail you for the job you have been doing since the military left. The military played its part, but Wemabod is playing a significant role.”

Wemabod Managing Director Olumide Ologun said: “We must keep the flag flying by contributing to the growth of member states and the people. We are expanding our revenue base through partnership. One of the major landmarks of today is to celebrate our customers, staff and people.”

  • My critics are ignorant, says Amosun

My critics are ignorant, says Amosun

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has said critics of his administration are either “ignorant” of its achievements or “confused”.

He spoke yesterday at Ilara, Imeko-Afon Local Government Area, while inspecting ongoing work on the 107-kilometre Ilara-Ijoun-Oja Odan-Ilase road.

Amosun said: “Those criticising us for doing these roads are either ignorant of what we are doing or confused by our level of service delivery. But we will not be deterred. We will remain focused on doing what the good people of Ogun State elected us to do.”

He expressed satisfaction with the level of work done on the first phase of the three-phased project.

Amosun said: “I laugh when I hear some people say our road projects are concentrated in Ogun Central. They are ignorant of what is going on. This road is 107 kilometres and it is the longest of all the roads we are building. It cuts across the four local governments in Ogun West. It links Yewa North, Yewa South, Ipokia and Imeko.

“It is only Ado-Odo/Ota that it does not touch and we are treating that local government specially. We have Ilo-Awela already there. We are doing this road to open up this area, which is the food basket of the state. “When it is completed, farmers will not have problems bringing out their farm produce again. They will not need to go to Abeokuta or Ayetoro again before getting to Ilaro. They will easily link Ilaro through Oja–Odan.

“For me, this is the most important of all the roads we are doing, as it will impact positively on the lives of the people of this area. We are ready for the job we were voted to do and by the grace of God we will do a good job.”

The Project Manager of PW Nigeria Limited, Mr. Hakan Dal, said the people had been cooperating with the company.

The project, which began last November, is to be completed in May, 2015.

The governor also inspected the 7.4km Oke-Oyinbo/Idagba road. He said the Lafenwa/Ayetoro road would be built into six lanes.

  • Amosun’s wife lauds Airtel’s school project

Wife of the Ogun State Governor, Mrs Olufunso Amosun, has urged corporate organisations and wealthy individuals to support worthy causes. She was reacting to Airtel’s gesture to adopt a primary school in Oke-Agbo, in Ogun State.

Inaugurating the block of four classrooms and three offices renovated by the telecoms firm under its ‘Adopt-a-School’ scheme at St John’s Primary School last Thursday, Mrs Amosun said such efforts would make the society a better place. Mrs Amosun said the initiative agrees with the policy of the Ogun State government to provide quality education to underprivileged children.

“Airtel’s Adopt-a-School programme is in tandem with the policy of the Ogun State government, aimed to provide quality education to underprivileged children. As you know, Ogun State government is committed to creating a conducive learning environment where both privileged and underprivileged children would have access to quality education,” she said.

As beneficiaries of the gesture, Mrs Amosun counselled the pupils to be serious with their studies as it was the only way they could repay the company’s gesture.

“It is not for you to dance and say thank you that Airtel wants. They want you to become governors, presidents, tomorrow. Focus on your books. It is left for you to use what you are given well,” she said.

The Company’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Mr Segun Ogunsanya, said Airtel Nigeria is committed to alleviating poverty and illiteracy from the country through education.

Ogunsanya said:”Quality education offers children the best opportunity in life to realise their dreams and become the leaders of tomorrow. A great environment is also critical to the development of a sound mind.

“It is therefore in recognition of the importance of education and as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility vision that we have committed to the adoption of public primary schools across Nigeria.

“We are adopting government – owned primary schools located in an undeserved, rural and semi-urban areas and providing them with requisite infrastructure and learning tools including classrooms, textbooks, furniture, school uniforms, school bags and relevant training to improve the teaching skills of our teachers.”

Head Teacher of the school, Mrs Victoria Boyejo, said she was overjoyed about the scheme which she said has changed the school’s status.
