  • Amosun gives 1,200 pilgrims allowances

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has given a personal donation of 200 Riyadh to each of the 1,200 pilgrims from Ogun in Mecca.

Chairman of the State Muslim Pilgrims’ Welfare Board Dr. Isiaq Yusuf yesterday said the gesture was to ease their burden at the Mina camp, where they are expected to stay for four days after climbing Mount Arafat.

A member of the board, Alhaji Abidoye Amosun, who spoke for Yusuf, said the state government was concerned about the welfare of pilgrims.

He said: “A special package has been provided personally by Governor Ibikunle Amosun for all pilgrims from Ogun to aid feeding during the four-day stay in Mina camp to complete the Hajj rites.

“You must preserve your strength for the task ahead, which is to ensure you complete all stipulated rites expected of pilgrims for your efforts to be accepted by Allah.”

The climbing of Mount Arafat will hold on October 14.

One of the pilgrims, Mr. Raji Abdul-Raman thanked the governor and hailed the conduct of officials of the board.

Another pilgrim, Alhaja Sikiratu Alawiye, said despite some hitches, they were adequately provided for.

Amosun boosts transportation with 150 taxis

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun yesterday inaugurated 150 new vehicles under the Metro Taxi Scheme to boost intra-city transportation.

The ceremony was held at the Arcade Ground of the Governor’s Office in Abeokuta, the state capital.

Last September, Amosun inaugurated 50 mini-buses and seven high capacity buses under the State Mass Transit Scheme.

The governor said the Metro Taxi Scheme was necessitated by the influx of people and investors to Ogun. He said this required an efficient transportation system for people and goods.

Amosun urged the police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), sister agencies and transport unions to ensure the success of the project.

He said: “This event marks another milestone in the history of our state, as we are delivering on our promise by inaugurating the first phase of the Taxi Scheme with 150 brand new fully air-conditioned Nissan Sunny/Almera vehicles, known as Igba Otun (New Dawn).

“Our state’s new socio-economic status has brought with it attendant challenges associated with modern development. There is an influx of people seeking greener pastures as a result of more investments and job opportunities.

“Aside the fact that we have been able to provide security, which enhances the development of investments, it also infers that we must be able to ensure the free-flow of traffic of people, goods and services. It is for this reason that we have intensified efforts on our road projects.

“Some of the roads under construction, which we have styled ‘Ogun Standard roads’, have been completed, while others are at various stages of completion. These roads, when completed, will enhance our transportation system and improve the aesthetics of our environment.”

  • Amosun mourns journalist

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has described the late Mr. Peter Oyeyemi Obe (81) as an icon of photojournalism in Nigeria.

Amosun said the veteran photographer’s death is “a great loss” to the media.

In a statement yesterday, he described the late Obe as a “master of the art of press photography, who bestrode journalism like a colossus”.

Amosun said: “He was a quintessential photojournalist; a thoroughbred professional. His works have been a source of knowledge and inspiration to many in the profession, right from his eventful days in the Daily Times as chief cameraman.”

The governor urged the new generation of photojournalists to follow in the late Obe’s footsteps by making professionalism their watchword.

He commiserated with the deceased’s family and the media, praying God to grant the late Obe eternal rest.

  • Amosun makes case for cocoa processing, consumption

Ogun State Governor Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has called for improved cocoa processing to spur higher earnings.

Amosun, made this known at the Third Round Table on Nigeria Cocoa Value Chain in Abeokuta with the theme: ”Promoting local cocoa consumption in Nigeria: Myths and realities.”

According to him, the government’s support for the local processing and consumption have been identified as germane if the produce is to deliver on its potentials as a source of revenue generation, wealth creation and employment generation.

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Prince Segun Adesegun, Amosun, said if given priority in the National Development Agenda, local cocoa processing would enhance local consumption of the produce and by extension improve the livelihood of cocoa farmers across the country.

He said as part of efforts aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and improving the livelihood of a stakeholders along the cocoa value chain, his government had raised and sold one million high yielding cocoa seedlings to farmers at subsidised rate and has also taken advantage of the Federal Government’s Agricultural Transformation Agenda on cocoa where registered cocoa farmers get inputs for their farms at 50 per cent subsidy while Federal and state governments pay the balance for the input at 25 per cent each.

“The state government has chosen Increased Agricultural Production and Industrialisation (IAPI), as one of its five-cardinal programmes. The programme as conceptualised is expected to transform the state’s agricultural sector to a more vibrant commercial entity that will position the state as the food basket of the nation, a dependable source of raw materials for agro-based industries, generate employment opportunities and attain desirable level of export for improved overall foreign exchange earnings of the country,” he said.

Amosun, explained further that cocoa beans generated by government’s intervention are expected to feed the two cocoa processing industries located in the state.

Also speaking, the State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mrs. Ronke Sokefun, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr Lanre Bisiriyu, said that the government has approved the establishment of 150 hectares of cocoa farm plantation by unemployed agricultural science graduates.

In his welcome address, Chief Operating Office, Centre for Cocoa Development Initiatives, Mr. Oghenerobo Adhuze, said promoting local utilisation of cocoa products was inevitable if the country aspires to have a sustainable cocoa economy.

  • Amosun deserves second term, says Anisulowo

Amosun deserves second term, says Anisulowo

Senator Iyabo Anisulowo is a former Commissioner for Agriculture in Ogun State and Minister of State for Education. She spoke with MUSA ODOSHIMOKHE on the activities of Governor Ibikunle Amosun and his bid for a second term.

Many people are endorsing Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun for a second term. What is your view?

Yes, I have said it many times. He has been doing well, especially with the infrastructure – roads, schools and opening up investment opportunities for people. Workers in the state are being taken care of; the area that I am expecting him to do more is agriculture. If he doesn’t go for the second term, how will he open up the rural roads that would enable investors to plan, invest and move their finished products out of the markets? He is trying and in fact, I never knew he could do the much he has done now. I believe that we should be patient; we should give him support and, no matter what he may have as his shortcomings, at least, we are all human beings. But for me, nothing will make me go against him. If I go against him, it will also mean I don’t have the love of my people in my mind. So, let us give him the chance. Let him go for the second term so that he can actually help us also, in this area (Ogun West Senatorial District) because we are nearer to the Egbas. I mean, Egba and Yewa, we are nearer to one another. And the wind should blow across the land so that we can say that, at least, we have experienced democracy.

But your kinsmen from Yewa land still feel that the governor has not been fair enough to the zone. Do you share that view?

Every human being has his own different strategy. Amosun’s strategy is to combine four local government areas across the pure Yewa land. The road ,which he started from Aiyetoro, through Imeko, Ilara, Ijoun and the rest, is a major breakthrough for us in the border area. And when roads along these routes are put in the proper shape, development will come and radiate across the towns. To me, honestly, he has started well and even if I don’t benefit anything, no problem. If it is for some personal bases, well, I can say he shouldn’t go for the second term. But I don’t have any covenant with him to say he should go for only one term or not. Also, the constitution allows him to go for the second term. Therefore, let him go. To me, as an individual and also, as a leader in this community, as many I can convince, I will.

What is the agitation for power shift to Yewa all about?

I don’t think we are prepared for it because the major stakeholders are looking at this Amosun issue. They are feeling that “ko sa wa seti wa na” (He should come and do our own too). It is the survival of the fittest for now. For most people, that he has been demolishing houses in Egba, Aiyetoro, Ijebu-Ode, Sagamu and others, and you should know that, it is four-legged. He has touched the four zones and I must confess to you. The extent is what we are talking about. Nobody can compete with Abeokuta; it is the state capital. If a Yewa-born person becomes a governor, he will live in Abeokuta because it is the state capital. He can’t shift the state capital to Ilaro, no! He can only, like we have a governor’s lodge here too, beautify or expand it to his own taste so that whenever he comes to his constituency he can have where to pass the night there and his entourage. But the capital will always remain in Abeokutaand that has been established. So, if they are spending 30 percent of the state income in Ijebu and they are also spending 30 percent in Yewa/Awori, definitely, Abeokuta will take the remaining 40 percent. And most people, especially workers live in Abeokuta. So, the economy will be better off than any other place. It is we, ourselves that we should sit down and map out our strategies on how to develop our own area, according to our ability.

What is your position on the local government autonomy?

For me, honestly, it is a difficult thing to do. When I was the Senate Committee Chairperson on State and Local Government Administration and, if not for the third term agenda that we threw out and other things, we would not have been better off. Take for instance, we have changed Yewa name. Sagamu too was badly spelt in the constitution. The local government autonomy then, thank God, the current Senate President, David Mark was part of the review. I could remember we went to Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, to review the constitution in a bid to change certain things and clauses. It was not controversial that time. I mean the issue of the local government autonomy. I am surprised now because, without the local governments having financial muscle, the rural areas can’t develop at all. Invariably, I am in support of local government autonomy. I had been the senate chairperson on state and local government administration and I know the limitation of the state.

The states themselves, according to the constitution, are supposed to add 10 per cent of their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to the local council funds. That is why they have the joint account – state and local government. The reason for the joint account is that the Federal Government puts its own money to the local governments and the state governments are required to add additional 10 per cent of their IGR into it and then, they will now share. So, invariably, the constitution meant well. It is the interpretation and the implementation of the clauses of the constitution that is causing ‘wahala.’ It is to enrich the local governments so that they can execute projects, take care of the environmental sanitation, to pay staff salaries, health and others.

Why is it difficult for the National Assembly to create states?

It is unfortunate that we don’t do our politics right in the south, especially as it concerns the creation of more local governments. And they (north) like joining the Army and you can see balance. The north believes in democracy and militocracy. If they can’t make it democratically they believe they will make it militocratically.

And so, everybody either good or, bad was sent to enlist in the Army.  But in our own case here in the South, we were resenting the Army and we didn’t send our children to join the Army except the ones that were stubborn. You can see where it has landed us.

It landed us in an area of succession because we were not able to enlist our people. And because they had killed one nobody would want to take over. But they, if they are still killing 100 persons of their own they would have people stepping into their shoes. In the area of local government or state creation, it is very difficult now because we are in a democratic era, but it is on the military by its fiat that you can just create local governments and states.

But in a democracy like ours, it is difficult because it has to be discussed and debated. Population will be brought into focus. Take for instance, if we are creating local governments the questions of what are the potentials would come in? How buoyant is the local government? In this wise, sustainability will come in. And when this debate starts, interest groups will come in. And there are some people in this country that have money to stop whatever they want to stop or promote whatever what they want to promote.

They have enough funds and that is the problem, but God is supreme. So, it is going to be difficult and when they were saying it, that they would create more local governments and states and I was once in that chamber before.  I know what can happen and I know what can’t happen because when they close the doors behind them so many things go on inside. And when that those things are going inside, even with your best ideas you will realise that you can’t speak for your own people alone. You will have to think Nigeria and when you are thinking Nigeria certain things can’t be done.

  • APC’ll rebuild Nigeria, says Amosun

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun yesterday said the All Progressives Congress (APC) will rebuild Nigeria.

He spoke at the Ake Palace Ground in Abeokuta during the inauguration of the Ogun APC chapter.

Amosun urged citizens to keep hope alive, adding that the APC marks a new dawn in Nigeria.

He said: “Today, APC is the only party with representation across the six geopolitical zones in the country. It is a mass-oriented party.”

Assuring Nigerians that APC would restore sanity to all sectors of the economy, Amosun said: “Education will be revived. Agriculture will be returned as the mainstay of our economy, providing employment for our youths and become the industrial base of our country. Health care services will be restored and extended to all the nooks and crannies of the country, among other mass-oriented programmes of the APC.”

The governor said the ongoing development in Ogun is a sample of what to expect from the APC.

“With APC in the saddle of leadership, our future is bright in Ogun and Nigeria,” he added.

The ceremony was attended by party stalwarts, community associations, trade unions, farmers, artisans and youths.

  • Buhari, Tambuwal, governors attend Fashola father’s Fidau prayers

Buhari, Tambuwal, governors attend Fashola father’s Fidau prayers

Former Head of State, General Muhammadul Buhari (rtd) and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal and ten governors led the list of prominent personalities who gathered on Tuesday to pay their last respect to late Alhaji Ibrahim Demola Fashola, father of Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN).

The event which was the 8th Fidau Prayers for Pa Fashola held at the Tafawa Balewa Square drew an array of personalities and large turnout of guests dressed in red and yellow head gears and caps and was held amidst tight security.

The arrival of Governor Fashola, his siblings and other dignitaries signalled the start of the event at about 2pm.

The large tents were beautifully decorated with yellow and red colours and a big banner bearing the photograph of the deceased with the inscription, “Farewell Papa.”

Governors present at the event are – Comrade Adams Oshiomole of Edo State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti ), Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Senator Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun) , Senator Abiola Ajumobi (Oyo), Aliyu Babangida (Niger), Muritala Nyako (Adamawa), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Captain Idris Wada (Kogi), Sule Lamido (Jigawa) and the Deputy Governor of Imo State.

  • Growth imminent with APC, says Amosun

Growth imminent with APC, says Amosun

•’Defectors to PDP not our members’

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has said the coming of the All Progressives Congress (APC) marks a new dawn in Nigeria’s politics.

He said the country would grow as soon as the APC takes over governance at the centre.

Amosun spoke in Abeokuta, the state capital, during a valedictory meeting with leaders of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Ogun chapter.

He said: “Nigeria has no business with poverty, given the quantum of its resources. It is unfortunate that it has been mismanaged and APC will address this. I am sure that if APC is at the helm of affairs, this country will progress within a short time.

“This is the change we have been waiting for. It will transform the country.”

The governor said the APC would soon be inaugurated in the state.

At the meeting were Senators Olabiyi Durojaiye, Gbenga Kaka (Ogun East), Gbenga Obadara (Ogun Central), Akin Odunsi (Ogun West) and some House of Representatives’ members.

Also yesterday the APC said the purported defectors to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ijebu-Igbo were not registered APC members.

Ijebu North Local Government Secretary Adebayo Adekoya said the PDP’s claim that some APC members defected was spurious and a cheap propaganda to deceive the public.

Adekoya said a former PDP State Secretary, Chief Otemolu Pegba, who announced at a political gathering in Ijebu-Igbo on Sunday that he has dumped APC for PDP, is not an APC member but a member of the Imole Group, which is involved in the Labour Party’s (LP’s) activities.

He said: “How can a splinter group with scanty membership strength, which has been actively involved in LP activities, be referred to as APC faithful?

“One wonders why the PDP has to resort to sensational and blatant lies to gain cheap political points that would serve no purpose.

“They claimed that over 5,000 people defected from various parties to the PDP. In as much as I would not want to speak for other parties involved, I clearly state that the congregation at Prince Buruji Kashamu’s Ijebu-Igbo home, where the event was held, including security men and onlookers, according to reports, were not up to 2,000. How did they arrive at 5,000 defectors?

“They can only sell such lies to dummies. I am doing this to set the records straight that the few people they claimed left for their party are mere political liabilities, who will add more to the internal wrangling in the PDP.

“PDP is smarting from the crisis rocking it and has become desperate to the degree of recruiting undertakers to escort it to its final resting place – the archives of defunct Nigerian parties.”

  • Community tasks Amosun over collapsed bridge

About a year ago, residents of Iken-Ogbo-Ijebu in Odogbolu Local Govern-ment Area, Ogun State woke up to find out that the only bridge linking the town to other neighbouring towns had collapsed.

The collapse, which was caused by a heavy flood that ravaged the area, also affected movement of school children, market women, businessmen and women to neighbouring towns.

A year after, the bridge is yet to be repaired causing untold hardship to the people. The bridge, according to the residents, serves as the only gateway to other towns such as Okelamuren-Ogbo, Ibido-Ogbo, Isanya-Ogbo, Ijagun-Ogbo, to mention but a few.

The CDA Chairman of the Iken-Ogbo-Ijebu, Comrade Gabriel Adenrele Odulaja, the traditional ruler, Oba Lawrence Oguntayo and Baale of Iken-Ogbo-Ijebu, Otunba Olalekan Odunfejo, were said to have intimated the state Ministry of Works of the development, but nothing has been done so far to address the problem.

In the same vein, the people are also calling on the state government to provide electricity for the town, adding that the only transformer for the area had packed up since over a year ago.

The residents said they are now at the mercy of criminals who hide under the cover of darkness to perpetrate crime in the area.

  • Amosun, Imam: Don’t abandon Ramadan virtues

Amosun, Imam: Don’t abandon Ramadan virtues

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun and the Chief Imam of Egbaland, Alhaji Liadi Orunsolu, yesterday urged Muslims not to return to the vices they had jettisoned during the Ramadan.

They said Muslims need to allow the spiritual teachings, prayers and blessings of the fasting period to continue to manifest in their daily lives.

Amosun and Orunsolu, in their separate Sallah messages to Muslims yesterday at the Lantoro prayer ground, Abeokuta, said there would be abundant blessings from Allah when His servants obey His commands.

The governor urged Muslims to obey the teachings of Prophet Mohammad, adding that obedience always attracts immense rewards from Almighty Allah.

According to him, Muslims are to follow in the footsteps of Prophet Ibrahim, who received immeasurable blessings from Allah through unalloyed obedience to His command.

He added: “The fear of God, discipline, study of the holy Qur’an, alms-giving, compassion, tolerance and fulfilment of civic obligations, exhibited by the faithful during the holy month, were deeply inspiring.”

The governor advised Muslims to continue in the same spirit.

Amosun assured that his administration would continue to put smile on the faces of the residents through the provision of basic amenities for the comfort of all.

The Chief Imam said part of the teachings of the Ramadan include honesty, love to the less-privileged in the society, alms-giving and constant prayers to Almighty Allah.

Orunsolu also urged Muslims to shun corruption and other vices that are opposed to the will of Allah.

The Muslim cleric advised the faithful to love and care for the needy and the underprivileged in the society.
