Anger in Anambra over alleged sale of dollar savings

A human rights group, Citizens’ Rights Initiative, has condemned the alleged sale of Anambra State’s dollar savings by the incumbent governor,  Willie Obiano. In a statement signed  by its Secretary, Barr. Tony Ezigbo, the group condemned the sale and described it as the foundation for the enslavement of Anambra State by Governor Willie Obiano. The group said it was wicked and irresponsible for a government that denied receiving any savings from its predecessor to turn around and sell those very bequeathal  it denied, describing it as the height of hypocrisy and highest  exemplification of hatred for the state and her people.

The group  said  if the governor did not have the capacity to add to the savings, he should have at least, left it as it was rather than sell what took his predecessor, Peter Obi eight years to save for the state. They enjoined  Obiano to rescind the sales and return  the money to the state, especially against the revelation that “it was sold below the cost for reasons best known to him.” The group  also condemned the sale of Anambra House on 23-25 Martin Street, Lagos and called “on all Anambrarians, the clergy, human rights groups, both in the state and even beyond, to join hands and stop Obiano from the havoc he is presently wrecking on the state.” Ahead of the November 18 governorship election in the state, the World Igbo Youth Congress, WIYC, yesterday endorsed Mr. Oseloka Obaze as its choice.

The group predicated its decision on what it called Obaze’s experience and “well-thought-out” manifesto, aimed at taking Anambra to a new level. In a communique signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mazi Okemiri Alex, the WIYC urged the people of Anambra not to make the mistake of re-electing Governor Willie Obiano for a second term in office. The communique noted that “having carefully appraised the political developments in Anambra State, especially with regards to the over 30 candidates jostling for the governorship position, we have come to the conclusion that our choice lies in Oseloka Obaze.

“Our reason is anchored on Obaze’s well-thought-out manifesto and programme of action, in which he shows a clear road map for youth empowerment and the overall development of Anambra State. “Obaze of the Peoples Democratic Party is the best in terms of international exposure, maturity, accessibility. So, we urge Ndi Anambra that giving Obaze their mandate on November 18 will be more fruitful than anything else. “After monitoring the political activities of the incumbent, Willie Obiano, we have come to the conclusion that his government is built on propaganda. This is more pronounced in his inability to clear the air on the N75b handed over to him by his predecessor, Mr. Peter Obi, neither has he accounted for the huge billions of naira he has received within the past four years. He has also been unable to prove his claims that Obi demanded N7b from him. “Based on these, we find him less credible to continue occupying that exalted office.”

Anambra guber poll: Group adopts Obiano as candidate

The Ndigbo Unity Forum (NUF), a socio-political organisation, says it has adopted Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra, as its candidate for the Nov. 18 gubernatorial election in the state.

The declared its support for Obiano in a statement jointly signed by the President and Secretary, Comrades Augustine Chukwudum and Chinedu Onyebuch respectively in Enugu on Friday.

The forum said that it decided to adopt the incumbent after scrutinising the manifestos of the major candidates in the poll during its monthly meeting.

It scored Obiano’s administration high on security, saying that prior to his assumption of office Anambra was one of the most insecure states in the country.

According to NUF, no week passed in the state then without news of high profile kidnapping.

It said: “This fear of kidnappers forced many prominent sons and daughters of the state to relocate out of the state.

“Gov. Obiano, through his pro-activeness, has not only stemmed the tide of kidnapping in the state, but also sanitised activities in the then notorious Upper Iweka axis of Onitsha.

“On education, it is evident even to Gov. Obiano’s opponents that education has recorded a giant stride under the present administration.”

The group said the present administration in the state had rebuilt the dilapidated infrastructure in the schools across the 21 local government area of the state and ensured the welfare of the teachers.

The forum said that the administration built three flyovers in Awka, the state capital, and rehabilitated roads, including the Ekwulobia-Ezinifite road, Neni-Adazi Nnukwu-Akwaeze-Igboukwu road and Aguiyi by-pass, among others.

It said the four pillars of development formulated by the governor which placed premium on oil and gas, trade and commerce and industrialisation and agriculture had helped in growing the economy.

According the group, Anambra is the fourth largest economy in the country.

“We therefore call on the good people of Anambra to ensure that Obiano is re-elected on Nov. 18,” the forum said.

Anambra election: Igbo leader urges full participation by residents

The Anambra State Indigenes Welfare Association, Kaduna Branch, has advised people of Anambra to go out en masse and vote the candidate of their choice in the Nov. 18 governorship election.

The President General, Chief Humphrey Okolie, gave the advice in an interview  in Kaduna on Friday.

Okolie was speaking against the backdrop of calls by some agitators, particularly the Indigenous People of Biafra, urging people in Anambra to boycott the election.

“Let them not allow themselves to be deceived; on that day, let everybody go out and vote.

“Go and vote for the right candidate; don’t sell your vote; don’t vote by sentiment; don’t vote along party lines – whether party A or party B, but vote the person you believe can perform and deliver Anambra state.’’

The president general added that Anambra residents should vote during the election in order to avoid a vacuum of leadership.

“How can they say election will not hold? Election must hold.

“If they boycott election and the tenure of the incumbent governor elapses what happens?

“Does the state stay like that without a governor in a democracy?

“No state will function effectively without a substantive governor or administrator to see to the affairs of the state.’’

Similarly, the Biafra Nations Youth League leader, Princewill Obuka said the group had no plans to interfere in the exercise, “as we recognize the people’s right to vote or boycott”.

  • Anambra: The Obaze appeal

In the build-up to the Anambra State governorship election for 2014, Oseloka Henry Obaze [OHO] was actually the first choice of the party faithful to succeed Peter Obi. His primacy was informed by the need to entrust the state to competent hands that would continue the great work of consolidating the giant strides the state had recorded with the celebrated Anambra State Integrated Development Strategy [ANIDS]. It was a great struggle for those that desired a continuation of good governance in the state and those who wanted a candidate that would be amenable to their selfish interests.  Today, everybody is living with the consequences. That is, however, a story for another day.

Anambra State that was acknowledged as the leading light on all indices of development is now a shadow of its old self. The good news coming from the state today is that Oseloka Henry Obaze is contesting to become the governor again. In 2013 when he first showed interest, Chuks Iloegbunam, one of the aides to Governor Willie Obiano, actually praised him enviously. Writing then from an unaffected position, Iloegbunam pronounced Obaze the best candidate in 2013 way above Willie Obiano, among others. He revealed how he did a character profile of Obaze and came to the conclusion that he was the best qualified. Practically begging the people of the state to vote for Obaze, he drew attention to a popular Igbo that he translated thus: “It will be impolitic to ditch the venue of a chieftaincy celebration simply to pitch camp at the propitiation of the god of recklessness”. Iloegbunam wrote then from a neutral platform.

I have been part of the present campaign of this great man who comes from a rich pedigree of education, exposure and experience. He worked under three presidents before joining the United Nations system. His career in the UN was admirably paraphrased by the then UN Secretary-General, Banki Moon: “You have proven yourself as a most dedicated, dependable and competent staff member. Throughout your service, you have unfailingly upheld the highest standards of efficiency, competence required of an international civil servant”.

Listening to OHO as he campaigns rekindles one’s faith in the feasibility of restoring Anambra to the right path. He says many things, all of which are issues-based. I have accompanied him to nearly all the 21 Local Government Areas of the state and his messages have remained consistent; marshalling out policy options his administration will pursue, if elected.

Strongly committed to real governance, he has done his homework which people can see. Among others, his commitment to human capital development is reflected in his pledge to allocate 26% of the budget of Anambra State to education; letting us know and realize it is the universal requirement among developing countries. Indeed, under the administration of Mr. Peter Obi, great attention was paid to education and series of concrete actions taken that elevated Anambra State from number 26 to first in external examinations [NECO and WASC].

Throughout the ages, discerning and wise men have held education dearly. When asked to differentiate between the educated and the uneducated, Aristotle said the difference was as that between the living and the dead even as Aristophanes said it was as that between broken and unbroken horses. It was also not a joke that on seeing an uneducated man seated on a stone, Zeno laughed and declared: “Behold a stone seated on top of another stone”.

Oseloka Obaze is just not reeling out policy options and expectations, but also reveals the realistic modalities to achieve the great re-birth. Still on education, he says: “If I become the governor, education will be free from primary school to JSS 3. From the money budgeted for education, we shall also engage in serious programme of certification and re-training of the youths geared toward skills acquisition. We shall also commit 10% of the money to church-owned schools because they train the people of Anambra State”.

OHO was part of the “brain box” behind Peter Obi in the implementation and execution of policies. It pains him that the richly crafted and well-executed policy to support the aged – those above 75 years who are not retirees and who do not have people they depend on – has become a conduit pipe for self-enrichment. Under an Obaze administration, the policy will be restored in accordance to its pristine objectives.

Obaze is also committed to affordable health care provision on the classical Hippocratic principle. “The Physician”, Hippocrates wrote, “should maintain a becoming exterior. Sometimes he should give his services for nothing, and if there is an opportunity of saving a stranger who is in financial straits, he should give his assistance, for where there is love of man, there is also love of the art”. Considering those in real emergencies and are denied medical care because of money, Oseloka says his administration would introduce a legislation that would ensure that doctors and other medical professionals attend to real emergencies the way they should be. To back it up, he also assured: “We shall set up a care foundation with the initial deposit of N1 billion. We shall get wealthy organizations and individuals to contribute to that. The charity, to be administered by honest Anambrarians, will assist in hospital payment for those in real need”.

As far as Oseloka Obaze is concerned, electioneering is not about throwing tantrums. He has evidently meditated on so many problems facing Anambra State and has come up with well laid-down programme of action to tackle them. He is exasperated with the antics and diversionary tactics of those who fail to recognize the great need to re-build an Anambra State that Governor Willie Obiano has shattered almost beyond recognition. OHO, therefore, lets us see the reason he is interested in replacing him.

From the vantage position of a principal participant in government, he talks about monies that have accrued to the treasury of Anambra State since Obiano assumed office in 2014 –  N75 billion left in the treasury by his predecessor; N60 billion borrowed secretly by Obiano; Internally-Generated Revenues; over N455 billion appropriated in the budgets of 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017; Paris Club refund; special budget support money given to states by the federal government – and which have been squandered as there is nothing on ground to show for them.

OHO talks about the flight of decorum and propriety from Government House, Awka; governance by billboards and false claims as in Ugu, Onugbu and yam exports; elevation of propaganda to an industry with Obiano enjoying the monopoly. He draws attention to the abandonment of all on-going projects and total absence of government in the state except in Aguleri, the governor’s home town.

OHO cautions the people of the state not to be deceived by the movement of caterpillars and bull-dozers to project sites for election purpose; and asks what Obiano has been doing in nearly four years. He raises the issue of crass nepotism that has become the order of the day, where over 50% of Obiano’s aides came from the same town; which is antithetical to the development of a state where everybody will have a sense of belonging.

He correctly asserts that he remains the best candidate to repair the so many wrongs wrought on the state and its people.

A man of integrity and compelling force of equity and justice, OHO has made it clear that he would serve only one term, and make way for other zones to take their turn.

With Obaze, hope is rekindled for Anambra State. The people listen to him in incredible fascination, for no one speaks to them with such obvious honesty and a clear purpose. The lash of his tongue is mostly directed at bad governance. Those of us who know him and have worked with him are relieved that very soon we shall bury an orgy and crown a saint.

  • ‘Anambra ‘ll vote for Obiano’

    ‘Anambra ‘ll vote for Obiano’

Chief Joseph Okonkwo is the former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State. He is supporting the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship candidate, Governor Willie Obiano. In this interview with reporters in Enugwu-Ukwu, he speaks on the governor’s re-election bid. Nwanosike Onu was there.

WhaT is your assessment of the political party taken part in the election?

Let me tell you right away that the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is the only party genuinely contesting this election. It is the only party with a legitimate candidate. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are gold diggers in the November 18, governorship election. They are being sponsored by godfathers. In the PDP, a former governor of the state who is a new joiner, a fresh member so to say brought his foster son and school mate at Christ the King College (CKC) Onitsha to join him hijack PDP. He has made him the party’s candidate in the election, but from all indications, they have not officially joined the party as I learnt. So, both the party’s governorship candidate and his deputy including their financier hijacked the primaries of PDP to the annoyance of original members. They have caused the disintegration of PDP in Anambra State as I speak. There is now the senator Annie Okonkwo and his group, the Dr. Alex Obiogbolu faction which have ended up in court over the same reasons. You now see that the PDP will be going into the election factionalised and disintegrated. How can a house divided against itself stand? As for the APC, some principal actors in that party led the burning of Anambra state during the reign of Dr. Chris Ngige as governor. They also abducted him. By our efforts then, myself and Igwe Peter Anugwu of Mbaukwu, Ngige secured his freedom at choice hotel in Awka where we disperse the hoodlums and brigands who burnt the state down.

Could you shed light on the N7.5b election fund?

You see, shortly after he left office, former Governor Peter Obi came to my house in Abuja to complain to me how he spent the sum of N7.5b on Obiano in 2013 to make him governor for which he needed a refund, but which Obiano was not yielding to. I was sort of taken a back and I asked him a few questions. How come this claim, I asked him. He repeated in my own house in Abuja the N7.5b. I then reminded him that when he was aspiring to be governor in 2003, I was one of the few people he approached. In fact, he visited my home in Enugu with drinks in company of one Oscar Onwudiwe from Ogbunike and Chukwudi Okafor from Enugwu-Ukwu, my home town. He gave me his manifesto and told me his ambition while soliciting my help and advice as a political “guru” in the state as he said who knows Anambra State in and out. So, when he sought to contest, I thought he was genuine having told me his brother and sister were reverend father and sister in the Catholic Church. In fact, I felt he was coming from a religious background. But at a stage as we talked, I found that he ran out of money with which to prosecute his ambition and had to rely on friends some of who are businessmen from Anambra resident in Lagos. It was then I also found that he was indebted to some banks. So, when he made this claim of N7.5b, he spent on Obiano to make him governor, I asked how come knowing that before you won the election you were not buoyant again. You see, after he was sworn-in as governor, because of his low profile style, little did we know until we got the information that he was taking a security vote of N1.5b, and later N2b. Again, when he forcefully took over public lands in Onitsha and forced the original owners out with the excuse that he was brining in a brewery, these people that brew “Hero Beer” in the name of the state, little did we know that it was a personal investment against what he told us. So what I am trying to say is that he lacked the moral rectitude to attack Obiano who is clean and a perfect gentleman saying he refused to repay N7.5b spent on him during the 2013 governorship elections if he did.

But, these things you just said have not explained what transpired in your house at Abuja when he came complaining to you about the money and Obiano’s refusal to reimburse him…

When he told me Obiano owned him N7.5b and sought my help to recover it, I asked him how he got that kind of money when I know that before he became governor he was indebted to some individuals and banks. He didn’t answer me the question but said that I was insulting him because he came to my house and stormed out. But I told him that I won’t be a party to fleecing the people of the state the sum of N7.5m if ever he spent it. Obiano is using that money prudentially to build bridges in Awka and some other places which is visible, pay salaries which some states can’t, provide security, build roads and revolutionise agriculture and we are happy for that. But I know that Obi didn’t spend that kind of money on anybody if you knew him very well.

  • A note to Anambra voters

SIR: As the countdown for the Anambra State gubernatorial election begins in earnest, the electorates have suddenly become the beautiful bride for the highly ambitious politicians.

The stage is already set for the familiar campaign of calumny, mudslinging and innuendos always associated with Nigerian politicians. As at the last count, the number of the contenders for the governorship seat has risen to 37 most of them pretenders.

The time has come therefore, for Ndi Anambra to carefully beam their search light on the serious contenders whose antecedents and political pedigree are easily verifiable to enable them make up their mind on whom they will entrust with their sacred mandate for the next four years.

The candidates must be subjected to intense scrutiny by Ndi Anambra on their past records as well as their financial capacity to prosecute their campaign efforts. In addition, the sources of their finances must equally be ascertained. After decades of bad governance, gangsterism and mindless looting of the state’s scarce resources fuelled by the godfatherism syndrome which sadly portrayed Anambra State in bad light as a pariah state, Ndi Anambra have become wiser and will no longer be taken for a ride by conscienceless and self-serving politicians. For the past 11 years or so, Anambra State witnessed tremendous transformation in all spheres of human endeavour. From security of lives and property to socio-economic development of the state, it has been a spectacular success story and nothing whatsoever must be done to stop this orderly march by Ndi Anambra.

Another burning issue to be carefully considered is the current debate on the rotation of political offices with particular reference to the office of the governor of the state. The office is presently zoned to the North Senatorial District from where the incumbent Governor Willie Obiano hails. Through consensus by the major political parties in the state, the governorship seat was zoned to the North for two terms of eight years. The Central Senatorial Zone had earlier produced former Governor Chris Ngige who was on the saddle for about three years and was quickly followed by ex-Governor Peter Obi who held sway in the state for eight years making a total of 11 years the zone had occupied the exalted office. The North now has four more years to complete its term before the office finally moves to the South Zone. This arrangement no doubt makes for equity, justice and fairness where all the people of the three zones will have a sense of belonging in the affairs of the state.

Lack of equity, justice and fairness obviously is the bane of the Nigerian political system which has given rise to the current agitations across the country.

Media reports quote both the candidates of the PDP, Osaeloka Obaze and that of the APC, Dr Tony Nwoye as having made solemn commitments to serve only one term in office if elected so as ostensibly to complete the second term of the incumbent governor. This is nothing but simply a political gimmick aimed at hoodwinking the unsuspecting electorate. It is a well known fact that political promises are hardly kept by the new crop of Nigerian politicians and as such the reported promises by the two eminently qualified contenders could be taken with a pinch of salt.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan suffered crushing and humiliating defeat during the 2015 Presidential election largely due to the written promise he allegedly made to his party PDP that he would serve only one term in office but later reneged on the promise. In order to keep the zoning formula alive therefore, it is only logical and sensible that the incumbent Governor  Obiano should be supported by all Anambrarians despite any misgiving, to complete his second term from his zone which barring any unforeseen circumstances will definitely end in 2022.

INEC ready to conduct credible, fair poll in Anambra- Official

Ahead of the Nov. 18 polls in Anambra, the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) on Wednesday restated its readiness to conduct a credible and fair election.

Mr Ibe U. Ibe, the Head, Elections and Party Monitoring, said this in Awka during the public presentation of research findings
on the situation analysis of security and public safety in the state.

The research findings was carried out and presented by an NGO, the Centre for Law Enforcement and Education (CLEEN) Foundation supported by Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA).

Ibe said the non-sensitive election materials had already been sent to the commission’s offices in the 21 local government areas, while sensitive materials would be distributed on the eve of the election.

He urged voters to ensure that they collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and come out en masse to vote for candidates of their choice.

The INEC official said serving corps members would constitute 90 per cent of the ad hoc workers who would be engaged for the election, adding that the remaining 10 per cent would be officials of some federal agencies.

“The commission is fully prepared to ensure a free, fair and credible election,” he said and urged stakeholders to abide by the provisions of the 2010 Electoral Act (as amended).

On his part, the State Police Commissioner, Mr Garba Umar, also promised adequate security for voters and other stakeholders during and after the election.

Umar, who was represented by ACP Maiyaki Baba, said the threat by Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to scuttle the poll should be discountenanced, adding that the police is fully in charge of the security situation.

He also allayed the fears of residents about the possibility of political violence before and during the forthcoming polls.

Earlier, the Lead Researcher for CLEEN Foundation, Mr Kelechi Iwuamadi, who presented the report, said the research was carried out by the group between Oct. 16 and Oct. 27.

According to him, the potential threat by IPOB of “no-election’’ campaign could pose a threat to the smooth conduct of the governorship election.

Iwuamadi also identified “hostile relationship” between the security operatives, particularly the military and members of IPOB as a possible threat.

The lead researcher said there was need for security operatives to fully realise that they were coming into the state for elections and not for Python Dance Operation II.

He also noted that porous borders and herdsmen activities were another threat to the polls.

In her remarks, Mrs Chigozirim Okoro, Project Lead/Assistant Programme Manager, CLEEN Foundation said the aim of the research was to promote public safety, security and justice.

“The research is to find out the possible effect of IPOB’s call for `no -election’ on the electorate as to whether it will cause apathy and violence.”

Anambra: Nwoye assures minority Igala of good deal

All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Anambra State, Dr. Tony Nwoye, has assured the Igala in the state that the time of their neglect from the scheme of things will be over, if he wins the November 18 election.

Nwoye spoke when his campaign team took its rally to the coastal areas of Anambra West Local Government Area, occupied by indigenous Igala.

The APC chieftain met with them at Uzam.

He scheduled another meeting with other Igala-speaking residents at Umueze Anam.

Nwoye was the area’s representative in the House of Representatives.

The politician won the National Assembly election despite the opposition by Governor Willie Obiano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and an indigene of Anambra East/West Federal Constituency.

A statement by his campaign spokesman Nonso Madu quoted representatives of the people as applauding Dr. Nwoye for being the first serious governorship candidate to visit them and for his past representation of their interests in the House of Representatives.

Nowye pledged to put smiles on the faces of the indigenes.

The APC candidate said he would not take them for granted, like the previous administrations.

He said: “I am part of you; I have been your representative. I know what you are passing through. Your marginalisation under Willie Obiano is special because he does not make any pretence about it. For some other people, he could lie that he did this or he did that. But for you, he just acts as if you do not exist.

“But I know you exist, and as your representative, I have done my little in bringing some projects here. But I assure you that as governor with executive powers,  I will wipe away your tears.”

Many of the residents took turns to show appreciation for his representation in the House of Representatives.

They praised him for his inclusive policies, adding that he was the first person to extend political appointments to the people.

  • Anambra: Traders threaten to slam N10bn suit against Obiano over closure of markets for campaign

Traders in Anambra State have threatened to institute N10billion suit against Governor Willie Obiano-led Anambra State Government for illegally closing the markets for his political rally.

The traders said All progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) announced that all markets in the state should be closed on Saturday to give them opportunity to attend the party’s rally for the November 18 Governorship Election.  But the state governor, Willie Obiano, yesterday debunked the claim of the protesting traders.

Recently, the leadership of the South-East markets, led by Okwudili Ezenwankwo,  ordered all the markets to shut down on Saturday for the endorsement of Obiano

However, the spokesman for the traders, Chief Augustine Nweke, on behalf of the concerned traders, described the action as senseless and illegal.

A statement yesterday in Awka, made available to reporters, said the government had no right to dictate to anyone who to support in any election, adding that “people were being intimidated by the APGA-led government in Anambra over the election.”

The traders said: “That we will still seek redress in a competent court of law demanding as a claim, the sum of 10billion naira only being cost of collateral damages occasioned by this indiscretion by the state government.”

“We are however calling on our protesting members to remain calm, peaceful and law abiding and not to take laws into their hands so as to avoid breakdown of law and order.”

The group also called on the Inspector General of police to investigate the circumstances that led to the closure of markets in Anambra State yesterday.
