Why Yakubu Aiyegbeni Teamed Up With Anthony Joshua

Former Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, Leicester City, Blackburn Rovers, Coventry city goal poacher, Yakubu Aiyegbeni has shown solidarity with the World Heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua as he prepares for his WBA titles defence bout..

The two Nigerian sportmen met at the Finchley and District Amateur Boxing Club where Aiyegbeni has reportedly been training as he is also contemplating a carrer in boxing after dropping his soccer boot.

The former Super Eagles forward have been sharing pictures and videos of himself displaying his punching skills, and his recent pose with Joshua who will be guuning for his fourth title at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Saturday.

If the pictures and videos upload are anything to go by the Nigeria Ex-international, Yakubu Aiyegbeni seems to be following the steps of Legendary Rio Ferdinand( Former Manchester United Player) who is also taking up boxing,

Yakubu who has scored 21 goals in his 57 appearances for Nigeria since his 2000 debut and also remains the third highest ever international goalscorer for Nigeria is anxiously looking forward to the Saturday’s headline fight between the Nigerian born boxer and a Cameroonian decendant, Carlos Takam.

The Sagamu indigene boasts of an unblemished professional record of 19 KO wins from 19 fights, including a memorable triumph over Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley in April. Both his IBF and WBA belts are expected to be on the line. The bout as reported will begin at approximately 11pm UK time(!0; pm Nigerian Time), this could be subject to delays depending on the duration of other fights on the night.

In his 12 years as a professional boxer, Takam has suffered three defeats, with one draw and 35 victories. Standing at 6ft 5in tall, the heavy-handed slugger has the strength and physicality to test Joshua – in theory.

Takam, a mandatory challenger, said it would be the biggest night of his 39-fight professional career that “will change my sporting life, but not my personal life.” “Sometimes late notice means less pressure,” said Christian Cherchi, Takam’s promoter.

Anthony Joshua is relishing the “great responsibility” of attempting to become the first man to hold all four heavyweight world titles

In Professional boxing history no man has held four titles, with Evander Holyfield, Riddick Bowe, James ‘Buster’ Douglas, Lennox Lewis, Wladimir Klitschko and Tyson Fury all laying claim to three belts at once.

At Thursday’s final news conference before his meeting with France’s Takam, Joshua stressed he wants to put April’s Wembley victory over Klitschko behind him.

“The mindset of a fighter has to be leave that last fight where it was and move on to the next opportunity,” said Joshua.

“If I am living off past wins I may as well give up. I can’t lose this fight and say ‘I won a good one last time’. No-one cares.”

Amosun, Dalung, Mohammed to cheer Joshua fight

The Executive Governor of Ogun state, His Excellency Ibukunle Amosun and the Minister of Youth and Sports Barrister Solomon Dalung are among a top Nigerian government delegation who will be at the ringside on Saturday night October 28, 2017 to cheer Anthony Joshua against Carlos Takam in an IBF and WBA challenge billed for the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
The Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed is also on the Federal government’s entourage.

This move which was at the behest of the Ogun state government is geared at supporting the reigning IBF champion who hails from Sagamu when he faces the former WBC Silver heavyweight champion.
Takam replaced Joshua’s original challenger Kuburat Pulev who made a last minute withdrawal following a shoulder injury.

Dalung said that with the 2 West African neighbours having a healthy rivalry in the sporting world, Nigerians will be happy if Anthony Joshua defeats the 2003 All-Africa Games bronze medalist.

“Of recent, Nigeria has enjoyed the upper hand against its West African neighbours Cameroon. The Super Falcons defeated the Indomitable Lioness in their backyard to claim the 2015 CAF Africa Women Cup of Nations. Few weeks ago, the senior men’s basketball team beat Cameroon to advance to the semifinals of the FIBA Africa Cup Championship. The success of the Super Eagles against the Indomitable Lions where they snatched 4 points from the available 6 points to qualify for the 2018 World cup is still fresh in our memories.

“Another win by Anthony Joshua will confirm our superiority and how far our sportsmen have gone in recent years.”
A confident Joshua who took part in Wednesday’s open workout session at the St David’s Hall in Cardiff has promised to give his fans something to cheer about as he defends his world titles.
Despite being a last minute replacement for Pulev, Joshua will not be expecting an easy ride against Takam who has recorded 35 wins and just 3 losses in the 39 fights as a professional since 2005.

“I will be conveying the goodwill message of his Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari to him when I see him after the fight. It is imperative for him to understand how much the government and the people of Nigeria are proud of his achievements as our son.”

The current unified world heavyweight champion, having held the IBF title since 2016, and the WBA (Super) and IBO titles since April 2017 boasts of a flawless professional record of 19 fights, 19 victories and all of them coming through knockouts.

  • Joshua vs Takam: Nigeria Versus Cameroon Bout?

Joshua vs Takam: Nigeria Versus Cameroon Bout?

Boxing: Armand Carlos Netsing Takam (born 6 December 1980), best known as Carlos Takam, is a Cameroonian-French professional boxer and former WBC Silver heavyweight champion.

As an amateur, he represented Cameroon in the super heavyweight division at the 2004 Olympics. 2003, at the All-Africa Games in Abuja, Nigeria, Takam captured the bronze medal in his weight division.

He made his debut as a professional in France on December 10, 2005, when he defeated Zinidine Benmakhlouf of Belgium. He had a record of 17 wins, 0 losses, 0 draws and at 16 knockouts by the end of 2008.

Takam made his HBO debut on 18 January 2014 against Cuban Mike Perez. The fight started slow with little action in the first five rounds, however, Takam took over starting in round six, as he planted his feet inside and was able to work Perez over. The Cuban’s arms got heavier and heavier as the fight went on, and he didn’t seem to have his usual snap or speed. Takam was able to hurt Perez in round six and round ten.

On 16 October 2017, Takam, 33 years old, was made the replacement to fight Anthony Joshua when Joshua’s opponent Kubrat Pulev pulled out with a shoulder injury.

Since Takam and Nigerian born Anthony Joshua’s bout has been fixed both countries have been taken sides. While Cameroonians are all out rooting for their son Takam, the rave here in Nigeria is not in anyway lesser.

Ahead of Saturday when the centre stage will be set for the Nigerian-born Anthony Joshua to defend his WBA and IBF heavyweight title against the Cameroonian-born French boxer, the country is already agog with publicity and high spirit momentum.

Nigerians are anxiously looking forward to the bout with the same strong feeling they have for football. Nigerians support the Super Eagles of Nigeria no matter who their opponent is, and at what level. This explain the support Joshua is having back home in Nigeria.

Nigerians at Anthony Joshua’s hometown believes when their son as he has threatened to target Carlos Takam’s body as he plots to fight “in a phone box”.

The IBF and WBA ‘super’ heavyweight champion is four-and-a-half inches taller than his late-notice opponent Takam this weekend in Cardiff, having initially prepared to fight the much rangier Kubrat Pulev.

“I’m going to stand in front of [Takam] and gun his tree down because that’s what he does,” Joshua exclusively told Sky Sports.

“A fighter like him wants to get on the inside and work you around the body. I can’t keep punching straight if a fighter is on my chest, so I need to work on my inside game and stand in a phone box. Those fights come down to will, heart and whoever wants it more.

“He disheartens you. Imagine throwing your best shots and they are still in front of you. It’s disheartening. To do that for 12 rounds takes a lot of energy so sometimes I’ll have to stand in front of him, trade him, and go to war. I need to break his will, to break his heart.

“Takam keeps on coming, keeps on coming. He works the body well and loves a left hook. I already thought he was a game, well-rounded fighter so what is going to happen when he comes here and has everything to take home with him? I’ll see an improved Takam.”

Cameroon-born Takam has been stopped just once in 39 fights, by Alexander Povetkin, and the durable challenger was compared to a “block of cement” by Joshua last week.

The world heavyweight champion said: “With Pulev it wasn’t about whipping him around the body, it was about staying off the line and boxing down the middle. Carlos is different – he can trade down the middle. My speed will beat his combinations. A good way to beat Carlos is to take his body out, that’s what Povetkin did to him.”

Joshua added: “[Takam] moves around a lot, and boxes well. As the rounds start going on he likes to trade, and throw hooks on the inside.

“I’ve had sparring partners who have tried to knock me out, and I’ve had to dig in and give them some body shots. So my inside game has definitely improved. If we stand on the inside and start trading, it will be entertaining.”

Joshua’s trainer Rob McCracken confirmed they would revamp his final sparring sessions by bringing in training partners who would replicate Takam’s physique. McCracken said: “Anthony is good against shorter opponents, anyway.”

KweseTv has stormed the Nigeria-home town of Joshua for a live broadcast of the fight.

The much-anticipated bout is billed for Saturday in Cardiff, Wales, and Kwese Tv would showcase the hometown of Joshua and her indigenes to the world while also simultaneously beaming live the fight in England.

The General Manager, Kwese Free Sports Nigeria, Chichi Nwoko who said this added that Kwese Tv would put in place a spectacular carnival-like show to celebrate the fight and to commemorate Sagamu Day.

  • Anthony Joshua toils in the gym for Pulev clash

Anthony Joshua toils in the gym for Pulev clash

With just under a month to go before Anthony Joshua steps into the squared circle again, the heavyweight champion is hard at work in the gym.

On October 28 the British superstar will face his IBF mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev and is clearly not taking the underdog for granted.

AJ shared a compilation workout video with his 4.2 million Instagram followers during which he engaged in a number of exercises.

The 27-year-old wrote that he was working ‘mind and muscle’ at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

Joshua tested his neck muscles by stretching them against a pilates ball resting against the wall and also performed a crab walk with resistance bands.

He grimaced as the conditioning element of his training was taken care of on the Wattbike and maintained his bulk with the use of kettle bells.

And the Watford fighter’s trainer Jamie Reynolds also shared a picture of the session writing: ‘All hustle, no luck.’

AJ is looking every inch the heavyweight champion of the world both inside and outside of the ring.

He recently cut a dapper figure as the face of Westfield’s new fashion campaign and seems to be elevating his status as a cross-over superstar, translating his work in the ring into success elsewhere.

Joshua’s work ethic has never come into question and his constant updates suggest there will be no chance of complacency against Pulev next month.

The ‘Cobra’ has only one blot on his otherwise perfect 26-1 copybook, losing to Wladimir Klitschko in 2014 as he was knocked out in the fifth round.

Joshua famously recovered from being knocked to the canvas by the same opponent at Wembley in April and will fancy his chances against the Bulgarian.

Only time will tell, whether his mind and body are tested to the same extent by Pulev in Cardiff.

  • Ronaldo’ll Beat Messi Mercilessly, says Boxing Champ Anthony Joshua

Ronaldo’ll Beat Messi Mercilessly, says Boxing Champ Anthony Joshua

Ronaldo and Messi have been rivals at the pinnacle of the footballing world for the best part of a decade – sharing the last nine Ballon d’Or awards between them.

But while Barcelona’s Messi leads the way in that department, winning five to Ronaldo’s four, Joshua believes the Portuguese would have the edge in the boxing ring.

Joshua believes Cristiano Ronaldo's power would overcome Lionel Messi's ruggedness

Joshua said on Youtube: ‘Messi’s got that ruggedness but Ronaldo looks like he’s got the Bruce Lee – bang!

‘You know what I mean, just stand there and lick you with one hook and you’re finished. Messi seems a bit more like his name… messy and rugged.’

World heavyweight champion Joshua also spoke of his appreciation for Ronaldo’s professionalism, revealing that he was inspired by the Real Madrid man’s work ethic and how he has marketed himself.

‘I’ve been pro now for three years, and I think early on I was trying to do everything because with boxing I come into the game as a professional,’ Joshua added.

‘Remember I haven’t had much background, so I had to present myself to the world – so for the first three years I was managing, managing, marketing and marketing.

‘But now I’m at a stage where I’ve just said I’ve done that, now I want to focus on being the best boxer then I get the inspiration from Ronaldo.

‘It’s just little things. He would train by himself afterwards to work on what he wanted to work on.

Joshua revealed he was inspired by how Ronaldo keeps himself in peak physical condition

‘I was speaking to [Ronaldo’s former Manchester United team-mate Rio] Ferdinand who said he was the only one in the team back then who had masseuses, nutritionists, psychologists, so he had that desire.’

Joshua said the footballer he'd most like to fight would be Manchester City's Yaya Toure
Joshua said the footballer he’d most like to fight would be Manchester City’s Yaya Toure
But w hat of if Ronaldo and Manchester City’s Yaya Toure face each other in the ring? This question also got Joshua laughing loud but could not give a straight answer but he admitted that the footballer he’d most like to go up against in the ring would be Yaya Toure.

Why Yaya Toure? When pressed for an answer, Joshua explained he would choose to take on the Ivorian powerhouse because ‘he’s a bit of a beast’.

Joshua will face Bulgarian fighter Kubrat Pulev on October 28 in Cardiff with his unified IBF, WBA and IBO heavyweight titles on the line.

While Messi retains the edge in terms of Ballon d’Or triumphs, Ronaldo claimed the 2016 award and looks certain to repeat in 2017 after Madrid won the Champions League and La Liga last season.
