Democracy Day: Better days ahead, APC assures Nigerians

As the nation celebrates the 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) has assured Nigerians of better days ahead.

The assurance was given on Wednesday in a statement by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka in Abuja to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by the country in recent time, the governing party expressed optimism that the country is on the right path to democratic consolidation and prosperity.

The party also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for its achievements in revamping infrastructure, implementing reforms, tackling insecurity, and investing in social programmes.

The APC expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their support and assured them that the party is committed to delivering a better, safer, stronger, and more prosperous country.

Admitting that democracy is not without its imperfections and challenges, the party noted that the country has had its fair share of setbacks, pain and disappointments.

The statement said: “These are inevitable and inescapable by-products of democratic construction. But importantly, it has set us, irreversibly, on course to build a strong, vibrant and resilient nation. Democracy provides us the opportunity of essential freedom to harness our finest human and material resources, under the participatory authority of our people, for beneficial and sustainable governance.

“On the occasion of democracy’s silver jubilee, it is remarkably auspicious that our country is under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a veteran advocate and defender of democracy, an exemplary progressive and visionary whose contributions to the enthronement of democracy and nation building is simply monumental.”

Highlighting the success stories of the APC-led administration in the last one year, the party maintained that, “President Tinubu administration has made impressive gains revamping our infrastructure to support the massive expansion of the Nigerian economy, implemented multi-sector reforms to remove age-long debilitating policy distortions and contradictions in the economy, tackled insecurity and revitalized the country’s security architecture, channeled resources to important social investments and poverty alleviation initiatives, initiated constructive engagements with relevant stakeholders aimed at achieving better wages and living standards for citizens.

“President Tinubu’s bold target of building a $1 trillion economy for Nigeria in a few short years received amplified validation by the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) with its recent forecast that Nigeria’s economy would be nearly $2 trillion by 2029. There can be no better indication that the Renewed Hope Agenda is right on course, and that our best days are ahead.”

Appreciating Nigerians for their unwavering support of President Tinubu’s administration and the party, Morka expressed confidence that the democracy being celebrated will usher in an era of economic freedom and secure a brighter future for our highly deserving citizens.

…educates Northern youths on how to get the fund

All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders forum has commended President Bola Tinubu for voting N110 billion domiciled in the Ministry of Youth for youth empowerment and development.

Convener and chairman of the forum, Alhaji Abdullahi Katsina, gave the commendation at Arewa House, Kaduna during a seminar organized for youths of Northern extraction on how to access the empowerment fund.

Katsina expressed confidence that the fund if accessed and properly utilized, will not only address the current economic challenges but also help in tackling the chronic poverty and unemployment crises in the North and Nigeria as a whole.

He commended the minister of youth, Dr Jamila Bio Ibrahim for the outstanding leadership qualities she had brought on board, which attracted the President’s attention to the ministry.

The forum’s chairman, however, charged the youths to go and develop their bankable business plans and apply to the youth empowerment fund, so that, they can become employers of labour, rather than looking for unavailable white-collar jobs.

In his keynote address, the Global Director-General of the Coalition of Tinubu Support Groups, Dr. Doyin Johnson charged the youth to drop the thinking of getting rich quickly.

According to Johnson, “Virtually all Nigerian youths want to be rich like Dangote, Adenuga, and Otedola, but the majority of them don’t want to work hard like Dangote and Otedola. The truth of the matter is that there is no free money under the Tinubu government.

“The good thing is that President Tinubu has done exceptionally well by recognizing the importance of youth development by voting a whooping N110 billion for youth empowerment. But, the youth must know that to access that fund, they must have a bankable proposal. Gone are the days when the government will give out money and people will waste it on frivolous things.

“So, my advice to the youths is to think of business they can do, write beautiful proposals, and access the fund. Because, if youth fail to do that, the money at the end of the year, will be returned to the national treasury,” he said.

Johnson blamed the current economic challenge on laziness on the part of the Nigerian youths, saying that, Nigeria has an army of youths who believe in getting rich quickly.

“That is why many are engaged in internet fraud, popularly known as ‘Yahoo-Yahoo’. But, they should know that Yahoo boys don’t end well,” he said.

JUST IN: APC’s vice chair in Edo resigns, may join PDP

The vice chairman of the main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo state, High Chief Francis Inegbeniki, the Uzoya of Esanland in Edo Central Senatorial District, has resigned his membership of the party.

Inegbeniki may soon join the governing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, based on the welcoming remark of Edo commissioner for communication and orientation, Chris Nehikhare.

The ex-vice chairman’s resignation was addressed to the ward chairman of APC in Opoji, Esan Central local government Area of Edo.

He said: “There comes a time in the life of every man, when some hard decisions must be taken, not only in one’s interest, but in the general interest of his people. This is one of such moments.

“After 25 years as an active, financial and dedicated grassroots politician in Edo State. Also as one of the founding fathers of the APC in Edo State, I believe that I have contributed my quota to the growth of the party in my ward, LGA, senatorial district, state and our country, Nigeria.

“Some recent developments in the party in my LGA and Edo State, however, conflicted with my core principles and values. These have led me to do a serious evaluation of my political future in Edo State, and decide on the way forward.

“After due consultations with my family, friends and political associates, I wish to formally inform you of my decision to resign my membership of the APC, and my role as the State Vice Chairman. It is a hard decision, but it is the best in the interest of the good people of my senatorial district.”

Inegbeniki thanked APC for availing him the platform, upon which he was elected the vice chairman, but insisted that a lot needed to be done to reposition the party in Edo state.

He also hailed his teeming supporters and followers for their support and loyalty, despite the challenges, while declaring that it was time to chart a new course for the good of all.

He said: “To all my friends, brothers and sisters in the APC, I wish you well, and wish to let you know that we still remain what we are.

“I cherish our relationship, and nothing can change it. I believe in the future of Nigeria, I believe in the Renewed Hope Agenda (of the administration of President Bola Tinubu).”

North Central APC forum calls for regional government

The All Progressive Congress (APC) Forum has called for the adoption of a regional system of government in Nigeria, advocating for each region to manage its own needs using its natural resources, educational quality, political prowess, and agricultural potential.

Speaking to reporters in Jos, the Plateau state capital, on matters of urgent national importance, the chairman of the forum, Alhaji Saleh Mandung Zazzaga, emphasised the necessity of this change due to the marginalisation of the North Central region.

Zazzaga highlighted that the North Central region has significantly contributed to the nation in terms of agriculture, education, natural resources, and political leadership.

He said that despite the contributions, the region has faced longstanding marginalisation.

He pointed out that the North Central region, known as the nation’s food basket with substantial agricultural produce from Benue, Plateau, Niger, and Kogi, is not fully utilized at the national level to ensure food security.

He added that the region’s natural resources, such as tin, remain underutilised for economic prosperity.

Zazzaga further noted that since the start of the democratic dispensation in 1999, the North Central has played a vital role in the growth of democracy and the emergence of national leaders, including presidents.

However, the region continues to be marginalized in political appointments, exemplified by the recent contentious allocation of the APC National Chairmanship position to the North West.

“So, after careful consideration of how marginalized we have been in this nation despite our endowments and contributions to national development, we the North Central APC Forum are calling for the regional system of government.

“Since the regional system of government is a political framework where power is divided among constituent political units, such as regions or states, we are therefore calling for the adoption of such a system so that each region in the nation can use their endowments to develop themselves, without any fear of marginalization

“Also, the federal government would still be responsible for matters such as national security, foreign affairs, and regulation of interstate or inter-region commerce, while the regions would have powers to administer their respective regions,” he said.

Zazzaga said as loyal APC leaders, they have been working for the success of the North Central region and have collaborated with leaders of other parties and stakeholders from the region in this regard, irrespective of ethnoreligious or political affiliations

He explained that using their forum to project the North Central region is legitimate, pointing out that even among the governors, legislators and local government chairmen, there are party or regional forums to push for their common interest.

  • We‘ve not left APC, Igbo community leader tells party

We‘ve not left APC, Igbo community leader tells party

The leader of the Igbo Community and Eze Ndigbo in Lagos State, Eze Christian Uchechukwu Nwachukwu has said he has no plans to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) for any other party. He also stated that the Igbo community under his watch is neither abandoning the party nor its President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government in the future.

Eze Nwachukwu said there are insinuations in some quarters that he had clandestinely given a hand of comradeship in favour of the Labour Party and its Presidential candidate, Peter Obi as against the directive of the APC, expressing the worry that he’s now being perceived as a betrayer of the party and the President Bola Tinubu’s government.

An industrialist and manufacturer of one of the best plastic products in Nigeria, Eze Nwachukwu recalled he had identified with the Tinubu’s government right from the period of Alliance for Democracy (AD), Action Congress (AC), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and currently the All Progressives Congress (APC), even as he said at his level, he does not have the luxury of time to start trading on party shifts.

“I’m a member of the Asiwaju political family and dynasty, which made me continue working for him. Every year, I organise a get-together called Iriji Ndi Igbo to mobilise my people, gathering and disseminating information to various local government areas and local council development areas. Successive administrations in Lagos State, beginning from that of President Tinubu when he was the Lagos State Governor, have been attending to my occasions till date,” I am a member of Tinubu’s political dynasty,” he said.

Describing the rumour as a mere ploy to smear his good profile, the Igbo community leader nevertheless warned perpetrators of such fake news to desist in the interest of the political stability of the state and country.

Eze Nwachukwu said: “After the zero-party, he got his party, the AD and contested the election. And we all participated immensely by giving him all the support to become the governor of Lagos State. Since then, the Igbo Community in Lagos State under my leadership has supported every political and social cause of Asiwaju. I have been behind him right from the AD, AC, ACN and today APC. We never thought of leaving the APC for another party.”

Tracing the cordial relationship back in history, Eze Nwachukwu recalled that Bola Ahmed Tinubu now the President of Nigeria, sent his amiable wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu who is now the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to inaugurate the Igbo Community Centre in Okota Lagos.

According to the leader, since then, the Igbo Community Centre has been functioning and receiving government functionaries at all levels in Lagos State, adding that the cordial relationships between the state government and the Igbo Community has been yielding positive results.

Apart from the good relationship, Eze Nwachukwu noted that the APC government has been magnanimous in appointing some members of the Igbo Community to key offices in the Lagos State Government, including Mr Ben Akabueze who is currently the Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation.

Again, Eze Nwachukwu said that in 2017, he mobilised all members of Ndigbo in Lagos to show solidarity for the success story of Lagos at 50. “We organised a function that was held at the National Art Theatre, in which all sons and daughters and government functionaries were present. So, with that, there is no way we can leave the party we belong to and we have been following, to work, to win and go elsewhere or work for any other party or persons,” he said.

Also, in 2022, he worked with the Director of Tinubu Support Group which was launched and led by Ahmed Suleiman and also joined Fola Tinubu in his Tinubu Presidential Campaign team and worked closely with the Chief of Staff to Lagos State Governor, Hon. Tayo Ayinde, in grassroots mobilisation of the Igbo Community in Lagos State.

He warned those rumour mongers to desist as such would rather cause trouble on the relative peace between the Igbo, Yoruba and other ethnic groups in the state, adding that he and Ndigbo in Lagos would continue to support the Federal Government and the ruling party in Lagos State.

He also counselled the Igbo in the state to continue to support President Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and their administrations by abiding by the policies and the laws of the state.

Former two-term member of Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Jude Chukwuemeka Idimogu, who was in the forefront of the Igbokwenu4Asiwaju campaign group acknowledged that the Igbo community in Lagos, led by Eze Nwachukwu, is strictly APC and in great support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government.

Idimogu, who is also the Deputy Apex Leader of the Igbo Community, in Lagos, reaffirmed his strong membership of APC and support for Tinubu.

Idimogu, however, appealed to Yoruba brothers and sisters to also understand that Igbo had a brother who contested also.

“You can’t shy away from that. So, some of them also wanted their brother to be President, some Yoruba also wanted Asiwaju to be President.

And some of us also wanted Asiwaju to be President, because we are party members.

“Our Yoruba brothers and sisters should have that understanding that politics is a game, it has come and gone. Now is the time for governance. As long as our leader is on that throne, every Nigerian is under him. There is no party politics now,” he said.

About President Tinubu, Idimogu said: “He’s our leader, and we believe in his capacity. We’ll continue to be with him. We pray to God to grant him long life and good health to enable him to execute the good plans he has for Nigeria and Nigerians.”

Also, the former Deputy President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Lagos State, Chief Vitus Uzoh, the President-General of Imo State Towns Development Association, Lagos State and Chairman, Igbo Speaking States Towns Union and Vice-President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Lagos, Chief Chris Ekeocha, and Chief Hon Obinna Vitus Nwabueze, a two-term Vice-Chairman of Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government Area, Lagos State, corroborated Idimogu’s views that the allegations were plans to tarnish the image of Eze Nwachukwu.

According to them, as far as Igbo community leadership in Lagos State is concerned, it’s only Eze Nwachukwu who has the certificate as an Igbo leader in the state.

“Nobody can take whatever does not belong to him. As far as we know, he (Eze Nwachukwu) is one of the leaders of Igbo community in Lagos.

On how he emerged the Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State, Nwachukwu revealed that when the concept of Eze Ndigbo in the Diaspora became necessary as a way of ensuring unity and peace among the various Igbo communities in all parts of the federation, Lagos State was not an exception.

To be part of the development, the Igbo Council of Chiefs of Lagos State, the Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos and the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Lagos State jointly invited applications from all Igbo residents in Lagos State for the position of Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State.

Many Igbo sons, including Chief Christian Uchechukwu Nwachukwu, Chief H.N. Ohazuluike and others applied. After thorough screening by the three bodies, Eze Christian Uchechukwu Nwachukwu was selected as the Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State after an election was conducted.

In 1999, the Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos State issued Eze Nwachukwu a certificate as the duly elected Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State after his coronation.

Also in the same year, the then Chairman of the Igbo Council of Chiefs, Chief Ralph Uwazurike and the then Chairman of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Lagos State, Chief Solomon Okonkwo organised a press conference during which Eze Nwachukwu was presented to the public as the Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State.

In October of the same year, the then Oba of Lagos, Oba Adeyinka Oyekan presented Eze Nwachukwu with a certificate (on October 5, 1999) as the recognised Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State, after which he was presented to the Council of Obas and Chiefs of Lagos State by the then President-General of Igbo Speaking Community, Chief Uche Momah. It was during that event that Chief Ohazuluike was ordered by Oba Oyekan to stop parading himself as Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State or he would go to jail.

Also, the late Oba of Isolo, Oba Rafiu Ayinde Yekinni Goloba, Osolo of Isolo in Mushin Local Government Area Lagos, presented a certificate of appointment to Eze Nwachukwu as Otun-Gbobaniyi of Isolo on October 28, 1989.

Since then, Eze Nwachukwu has been accorded full recognition by past and present Governors and Governments of Lagos State.

Eze Nwachukwu acknowledged that since then, he has been carrying out the functions of Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State effectively. According to him, in collaboration with other Eze Ndigbo in the various local government areas and local council development areas, he has been honouring individuals with chieftaincy titles.

Among them are Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu (now President of Nigeria) who was honoured with the traditional title of Ezinna Ndigbo (worthy father of Ndigbo); his wife Senator Oluremi Tinubu (First Lady of Nigeria) who was honoured with the title of Ezinne Ndigbo of Lagos State (worthy mother of Ndigbo), former Governor Babatunde Fashola as Omekeahuruanya Ndigbo, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as Ide Ndigbo, Governor Babajide  Sanwo-Olu as Ugochimereze Ndigbo, Chief of Staff to Governor Sanwo-Olu Tayo Akinmade Ayinde as Dikedinamba Ndigbo, Senator Solomon Adeola (Yayi) as Dikedioramma Ndigbo,  among others.

    ‘E-registration will fortify APC’

The Ekiti State Commissioner for Youth Development, Adesola Adedayo, has said electronic registration introduced by the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership would boost its support base.

According to him, the exercise, spearheaded by the Abdullahi Ganduje-led National Working Committee (NWC), would serve as a veritable platform to gauge the party’s strength through membership data capturing, and crave for more to win all future elections.

Adedayo, representing Ekiti North, is a member of the Ekiti delegation at the APC Electronic Membership Registration Train the Trainer Workshop holding in Abuja. Others are Commissioner for Special Duties, Otunba Dolamu Adeniyi (Ekiti South) and Olabode Adetunji, Technical Advisor Local Government Affairs (Ekiti Central).

The commissioner lauded Governor Biodun Oyebanji and the acting state Chairman, Sola Elesin, for according him the opportunity to attend such ‘politically-beneficial exploit targeted at fortifying the party’s acceptability’.

He added that with the electronic data capturing, the party can plan ahead of 2027 general elections through aggressive membership mobilization, win the off-cycle governorship polls in Edo State, while retaining Ekiti and Ondo states.

He said: “Membership registration is very essential for the survival of any party, particularly in a politically sophisticated environment like Nigeria. Data is very essential in the survival of any political party, likewise a country. It helps in proper planning and what the APC is doing should be considered very relevant to its future as a ruling party.

“This registration will ease the task of winning the coming poll in Edo State, while also replicating same feat in Ondo and Ekiti states.”
