Ondo 2024: Former APC guber aspirant emerges NNPP candidate

A former governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state, Hon Olugbenga Edema, has emerged candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) ahead of the November governorship election.

Edema emerged candidate of the NNPP at a substitution governorship primary of the party held in Akure, the state capital.

His emergence followed Ayeni Oluwatosin’s decision to withdraw from the governorship race.

Ayeni won the NNPP primary by polling 100 votes to defeat Prof. Ibrahim Ajagunna.

In a letter announcing his withdrawal, Ayeni said it was in the best interest of the party.

According to the letter, “I, Ayeni, Oluwatosin Israel, a governorship candidate of NNPP for the November 16, 2024 election in Ondo state, hereby voluntarily withdraw my candidacy from the contest.

“My withdrawal is in the best interest of our great party, NNPP.”

The state chairman of the Ondo NNPP, Peter Olagookun, said a new candidate would emerge after the substitution governorship primary of the party.

Olagookun said the change of the party’s candidacy would strengthen the party for victory at the polls.

In his acceptance speech, Hon Edema said he studied the NNPP manifesto and saw that it aligned with his vision as encapsulated in the Igbega Ondo manifesto.

Edema stated that the manifesto was put together by great minds and capable of taking the state out of the woods as well as setting it on the “consolidation and sustainability lane” for total development.

He said the primary election of the Ondo APC lacked internal democracy.

He stated: “This act of impunity should not be supported and be allowed to continue in our polity.

“The demise of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is just around the corner like its sister, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from which it took over the reign of power.

“It is on this note that I hereby formally announce my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) forthwith. I hereby pitch my tent with the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), a truly progressive and people-oriented party. This is a party for the immediate future.

“We therefore use this medium to serve a notice to quit to Governor Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa and his APC cohorts that effective from the 24th February 2025, the Government House, Alagbaka will no longer be available for their use.

“With the NNPP, we are providing a more veritable and people-oriented government to all the good people of Ondo State as captured in our manifesto which would be made available in due course.”

Only those on APC e-register will be considered for appointments, says Ganduje

Ahead of future elections, the national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has declared that only those whose names appear on the digital register of the party would be eligible to be considered for political appointments.

He made the declaration on Wednesday, June 5, at the opening session of the e-membership registration “Train-the-Trainer’ workshop in Abuja.

One hundred and nine participants – three each from the 36 states and one participant from FCT were trained in Abuja to flag off the membership e-registration exercise of the party.

The chairman also said that the party will do away with the manually computed register, insisting that only those whose names appear on the digital register shall be deemed to be true and faithful members of the party.

Opening the frontiers of the party to all, Ganduje called on all Nigerians to embrace the party and cash on the e-registration exercise to join the party when the exercise begins properly.

He however said that both existing and intending members are expected to provide their biometric data which must tally with the details captured in the National Identity Number (NIN).

According to Ganduje, this process will not only drive the planning, decision-making and projection process but will serve as the basis of reference for any member of our party seeking appointment at any level or desiring to contest an election.

Shedding light on the registration platform, the chairman said: “The APC and portal on which the prospective trainees from the Thirty-Six (36) States and FCT, Abuja are expected to use will soon be reactivated so that the existing and new members can go online to register and join our Party from any part of the world.

“Each person is expected to provide his or her biometric data which must tally with the details captured in the National Identity Number (NIN).”

The chairman then appealed to the Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani and his counterpart in the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji to support the party by providing technical assistance that will enhance the success of the party’s membership e-registration exercise.

“May I therefore appeal to our Honourable Ministers who are basically stakeholders on this project to kindly provide us with technical assistance towards achieving these laudable objectives.

“For our trainees, I will also like to appeal to you to please ensure that you learn from this programme so that you go back to your respective states and impart the same knowledge to those who will be engaged in this exercise. I must say this exercise is very important and dear to us, therefore we must strive to succeed.”

Ganduje then reaffirmed his commitment to the ideals of APC to set new standards and benchmarks in the nation’s democratic sphere and ensure the sustenance and continuation of the APC government at all levels.

Earlier, the National Organising Secretary, Alhaji Suliaman Arugungu, who was represented by the Deputy National Organising Secretary, Nze Chidi Duru, said the take-off of the exercise has silenced the doubting Thomases insisting the leadership of the party was committed to the success of the exercise.

“I am well aware that not a few people expressed their opinions on the impossibility of translating the vision of a digital membership register for a political party in our country because of the peculiar nature,  and technology limitations of the rank and file of politicians across the country.

“But the National Chairman refused to be daunted or discouraged as he remained focused on making his dream of digitalisation of our great party membership register, come to pass.”

The project coordinator, Samuel Adedapo Adedoyin described the Members Registration Portal as a comprehensive digital solution designed to streamline and enhance the process of member registration, management, and engagement for organizations.

He said: “This platform addresses the inefficiencies and limitations of traditional paper-based or fragmented digital registration systems, providing a unified and user-friendly interface for both members and administrators.”

E-membership registration will fortify APC ahead of 2027 polls, says Ekiti commissioner

The Ekiti State Commissioner for Youth Development, Adesola Adedayo, has stated that the electronic membership registration initiated by the national leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would enhance its support base.

Adedayo mentioned that the exercise, led by the Abdullahi Umar Ganduje-led National Working Committee of the APC, would serve as a reliable platform to assess the strength of the party by capturing membership data and striving to attract more members to secure victories in future elections.

The statement was made by the Ekiti Youth Commissioner in Abuja on Wednesday, June 5, during the participation of the Ekiti delegation at the APC Electronic Membership Registration Train the Trainer Workshop, which took place at Ladi Kwali Hall, Abuja Continental Hotel.

The Ekiti delegates at the political event were Adedayo, representing Ekiti North, Commissioner for Special Duties, Otunba Dolamu Adeniyi (South) and Hon. Olabode Adetunji, Technical Advisor Local Government Affairs (Central).

Commenting on the exercise, Adedayo lauded Ekiti Governor, Biodun Oyebanji and the APC Acting state Chairman, Sola Elesin, for allowing him to attend such a politically beneficial exploit targeted at fortifying the party’s acceptability.

He added that with the electronic data capturing the party would be able to plan ahead of 2027 general elections through aggressive membership mobilization and win the off-cycle governorship polls in Edo State, while still retaining Ekiti and Ondo states.

He noted: “Membership registration is very essential for the survival of any party, particularly in a politically sophisticated environment like Nigeria.

“Data is very essential in the survival of any political party, likewise a country. It helps in proper planning and what the APC was doing should be considered very relevant to the future of APC as a ruling party.

“This registration will ease the task of winning the coming poll in Edo State, while also replicating the same feat in Ondo and Ekiti states.”

Adedayo added that the deft political action further bolsters the widespread impression that the governing APC has become a pacesetter in the country’s political history.

    • APC kickstarts electronic membership registration process

Former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has been disowned by the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Chairman of the state council of the party Mr. Tajudeen Lawal made this known in a communiqué after yesterday’s stakeholders meeting at the state secretariat in Osogbo.

The chairman said the former minister of interior had committed various anti-party activities, including forming groups that are working against the interest of the party.

According to Aregbesola’s group Omoluabi Progressives at the weekend ahead of APC’s planned electronic membership registration, started registering members at his ward in Ilesa.

He cautioned party members not to be deceived to registered with the ex-governor because the group is not recognized by the party.

APC secretary in the state, Kamoru Alao, corroborating the chairman said the party’s electronic membership registration will start tomorrow after National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje’s inauguration of the committee that will train the trainers at the local levels.

He said: “We are discouraging our members who are loyal party member not to register with Aregbesola’s group because Omoluabi as a group is not a member of our party in Osun state.

“Aregbesola, as far as we are concerned, in Osun APC, he is no more a member of APC. We have taken steps three times to notify the national secretariat of the distractions from Aregbesola and we expect the  national secretariat to do the needful.”

But Publicity Secretary of Omoluabi Progressives, Abosede Oluwaseun dismissed the anti-party allegations leveled against Aregbesola, saying: “When Aregbesola left the affairs of APC to his successor… the structure of the party was intact but that cannot be said again years later.

“They have failed two time when they plotted to suspend Aregbesola in his ward in Ilesa East Local Government Area of Osun State. We are not distracted to reposition the party, APC so that we can reclaim the state from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2026.”

A former Osun State Deputy Governor Benedict Alabi speaking at the stakeholders meeting passed vote of confidence on Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, saying, “Anyone who is calling for the sack of the Oyetola is only political, everyone knows that he is a silent worker and achiever. When you are having a new ministry, you need to put a lot of structures in place. I am sure that those who call for the sack of Oyetola under political gimmicks will have a regret of what they have said when they see the outcome of what he has put in place.”

Alabi was Oyetola’s deputy during his tenure between 2018 and 2022.

  • APC urges House of Reps to set up panel of inquiry into Enugu demolitions

APC urges House of Reps to set up panel of inquiry into Enugu demolitions

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu state has called on the House of Representatives to invoke its powers to set up an administrative panel of inquiry into the ongoing demolitions in Enugu state.

The state government had last month embarked on demolition of scores of shops, warehouses, banks and the popular Osisatech Polytechnic as well as the workshops of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, to enable it build a modern motor park in Enugu (Holy Ghost), Gariki, Abakpa and Nsukka

The demolitions had generated a lot public outcry with the affected persons saying they were not provided alternative before the demolitions were carried out.

Concerned by the plight of the victims of the demolitions, the state chapter of the APC made an on-the-spot visit to the demolished sites at Holy Ghost, where it addressed a press conference.

Speaking to newsmen, the state chairman of the party, Barr. Ugochukwu Agballah, decried the amount of destruction at the site and other sites across the state.

While expressing happiness that the House of Representatives has already ordered its Committee on Land Transport to commence investigation into the destruction and forceful takeover of properties belonging to the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Agballah insisted that it was important for a national public inquiry to be set by the House of Reps to stop “the impunity going on in Enugu and make sure that the governor is held responsible for desecrating the constitutional rights of the citizens to own property and carry on their lawful businesses”.

He described the demolitions as another land grab scheme characteristic of the ruling PDP in the state, stating that similar tactics had been used in the past by the PDP governments to grab the zoological parks and gardens which was destroyed in same manner and later parcellated to high ranking members of the government.

Read Also: Aregbesola is a distraction, not longer our member – Osun APC insists

“We would want Nigerians to note that what is going on is another land grab scheme characteristic of the ruling PDP Ebeano hegemony. This was the same tactics that was deployed by his predecessors in land grabbing the zoological parks and gardens which was destroyed in same manner and later parcellated to high ranking members of the Government, same tactics was used to take over the biggest golf course which land was grabbed and percellated to members of the government, same for Ikenga hotels, W.T.C Enugu, IMT Rectors Village, the land zoned for the building of Rangers stadium and even land meant for the conference centre which was initiated in the eighties by the Sampson Emeka Omeruah administration, this was the same tactics used to take over all ventilation and amusement parks and open spaces in Enugu city.

“These are heritage sites inherited from the Eastern regional government and belongs to all Igbos as Enugu wouldn’t have had all those iconic heritage sites if it was not a regional capital.

“This is the problem we have with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu state right from time. The same PDP destroyed government reserved area. Enugu state governors past and present are the only governors that when in office they will forcefully take peoples land. It doesn’t happen in any other state in whole of southeast.

“No investor will invest in a state where this kind of demolition takes place every so often.

“The destroyed area was the recycling hub in Enugu. This place also houses private transport companies, Petrol stations, Shopping centres etc.

“If it is not terrorism, who destroys the oldest and biggest motherless baby’s home and orphanage in the entire Southeast, Southsouth Nigeria which is run by the Red Cross? The building is as old as Enugu town.

“If this is not a land grab scheme, tell me why the hub must be in the city centre, a place already congested. If this is not economic terrorism, tell me why the government will demolish the biggest privately owned polytechnic in Enugu State, why the government destroyed over a hundred warehouses where almost 90% of goods valued at over one hundred billion that are sold in Ogbete are warehoused”, he said.

Agballah therefore called on the House of Reps to invoke its powers to set up an administrative panel of inquiry to stop this land grabbing scheme and make sure commensurate compensation was paid to not only land owners of destroyed properties but also those whose businesses were destroyed.

“It is important that a national public inquiry be set by the House of reps to stop the impunity going on in Enugu and make sure that the governor is held responsible for desecrating the constitutional rights of the citizens to own property and carry on their lawful businesses.

“We also call on those whose businesses were destroyed to seek redress and make sure they get commensurate compensation for their destroyed businesses and we pledge to fully support them. Enugu citizens should not tolerate this show of unbridled dictatorship, impunity and wickedness”, he said.
