Ex-speaker of Edo Assembly, Francis Okiye, rejoins APC from PDP

    …says votes matter in democracy

An ex-speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Francis Okiye, has rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while declaring that in a democracy, votes matter.

Okiye rejoined APC on Sunday, May 19, at a massive rally in Edo Central Senatorial District, with thousands of his teeming supporters also moving to APC in Esan West, Esan Central, Esan Northeast, Esan Southeast and Igueben Local Government Areas in Esanland.

The former speaker resigned his membership of the PDP on May 10, 2024, while assuring that he would announce his next political move in the coming days.

He said: “Many politicians from PDP and Labour Party (LP) joined the APC on Sunday in Esanland. Prior to today (yesterday), we met, discussed and asked Governor Godwin Obaseki-led PDP government in Edo State to address the issues of alienation, disillusionment, high-handedness and despotic tendencies.

“Nothing was done about our requests. So, we the ‘aborigines’ in PDP decided to give Obaseki-led PDP a red card.

“My movement to APC will help the party. In a democracy, votes matter. So, my exit from PDP is a minus to the party, whether anybody likes to interpret it otherwise or not. If they are democrats, they will know that at least they have lost my vote, not to talk of many others that moved with me to APC.

“We will begin the house-to-house campaign soon, and let people know why they must leave PDP and join the APC. They must vote APC’s governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, that is humane, and not business people who are in the state to make profit.”

Okiye also declared that Edo PDP’s standard bearer, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, was no match for Okpebholo, a grassroots popitician, whom he said would emerge victorious on September 21, and succeed Obaseki on November 12 this year.

  • Oyedokun, Babayemi’s defection to APC will end Adeleke’s govt in Osun – APC chieftain

Oyedokun, Babayemi’s defection to APC will end Adeleke’s govt in Osun – APC chieftain

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bello Adegboyega, has said that the defection of former gubernatorial aspirant, Prince Dotun Babayemi and ex-national deputy chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Shuaib Oyedokun, along with thousands of supporters, signaled the potential ousting of Governor Adeleke in 2026.

The Nation reported that Babayemi, Oyedokun, and their supporters were welcomed into the party on Friday by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, and the National Secretary of the party, Senator Ajibola Basiru.

In a statement on Sunday, Bello, a prominent APC leader in Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun, stated that the defection of the prominent PDP figures indicates that the APC is gearing up for the 2026 elections.

He noted: “I am thrilled to welcome Alhaji Shuaib Oyedokun, a respected elder statesman with a long history of service and dedication to the people of Osun State and Nigeria in general, and Prince Dotun Babayemi, a distinguished leader and advocate for progressive policies, bring with them a wealth of experience, integrity, and a shared vision for the future of Osun state.

“The decision of Oyedokun and Babayemi to join the APC is a testament to our party’s growing appeal and our commitment to inclusivity, development, and good governance.

“I can assure our party members and Osun residents that their coming to APC is a signal that Governor Ademola Adeleke will be evicted in office in 2026 without stress. Many more people will join us.”

…more PDP members will join APC, says Oyetola

Thousands of members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun state alongside its leaders including a former national deputy chairman, Shuiab Oyedokun and guber aspirant, Prince Dotun Babayemi have joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defectors were received into APC at Secretariat of the party by the national leaders including Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru among others.

Speaking at the event, Oyetola noted: “APC has done so well. People are starting to see that when it comes to governance, the progressive knows how to. Baba Shuiab is a veteran member of the PDP, decamping to the APC. It shows that PDP doesn’t exist any longer here. I am confident that in 2026 we are going to take over the state. This is just the beginning because a number of people are willing to come back to us, and a lot of political heavyweights are coming to join us.“

Also, Senator Basiru urged members of the APC to the new members and integrate them into the system without any discrimination.

He added: “Baba Shuiab and Prince Dotun Babayemi were members of the APC in the past, they’ve seen things, they’ve seen the difference between progressive and conservative and they are back into the Party.“

Addressing thousands of his supporters, Babayemi said after the exit of Oyetola as the governor of the state, good governance ended but with his presence in APC, the party will take over power in 2026.

  • Kogi East APC stakeholders pledge commitment to party leadership

Kogi East APC stakeholders pledge commitment to party leadership

Stakeholders from Kogi East chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have pledged their commitment to Governor Usman Ododo’s administration and the party.

This is at the sideline of Governor Ododo’s first 100 days in office, and the need to deepen APC’s structure in the zone.

The APC critical stakeholders said the APC remains vibrant in Igala land.

Briefing reporters in Abuja, the group highlighted the strong presence of the APC in the eastern senatorial zone, covering nine local government areas which they pledged to maintain the party’s influence and voice throughout the region.

“APC is the party we call our own, and we pledge our absolute loyalty to its leadership under His Excellency, Alhaji Usman Ododo,” the group declared.

Stakeholders at the event consist of a former Minister of State for Labour, Prof Stephen Hussein,General Patrick Akpa (rtd),  former senator Dangana, Hon. Bala Zekeri and Hon Moses Abdullahi.

At the briefing, Prof. Isa Daniel stressed the importance of massive grassroots engagement to bolster the party’s membership in the eastern part of the state.

He said: “We shall continue to engage with our members at the grassroots level, particularly in the Igala-speaking areas, to expand our membership through strategic sensitization, enlightenment, and advocacy.

“As critical stakeholders, it is necessary to come together to adopt what I described as an ‘operational political victory module’ so that we can come out victorious in subsequent and future elections.

“In achieving what is before us and to consolidate our party on the ground, we need an interface with Gov. Ododo for possible directive and feedback.”

Professor Stephen Hussein, former state minister of labour, assessed Governor Ododo’s administration in terms of labour welfare and service improvement.

He commended the governor for his prompt and full payment of salaries.

Hussein said: “Worker’s welfare is crucial for a productive workforce, and I am pleased that Governor Ododo has maintained a commendable record of prompt salary payment and for not owing workers’ salaries so far.”

Former Senator Emmanuel Ocheja also discussed the party’s prospects for future elections, especially given the current stiff opposition.

“Governor Ododo has been proactive and inclusive in his governance, which bodes well for our party’s future,” he remarked.

“Ododo has begun his stewardship on a very good footing.

“He has started visiting top political stakeholders across the different parties in the state, like the former governor Ibrahim Idris and former governor Idris Wada among others.

“He is bringing people together and reconciling even the warring factions in Kogi and we welcome and encourage him to keep on with what he has started.

“If he continues with what he is doing now, there will not be any other party in Kogi but APC,” he said.

On his part, Hon. Bala Zakari, a stakeholder blamed the depletion of the membership of the party on the crises that came with the victory of the party at the Nov. 16 2023 governorship election in the state.

“There are a lot of defections from the party after the election.

“So, we are coming together to help our party; to help our government and remobilise, sensitize, and talk to our people.”

“This is so that those who defected from the party will come back and for those who were not our members before to join us. This is because APC is a progressive democratic party,” he said.

  • Atiku, Peter Obi’s gang up is no threat to 2027 for Tinubu – Progressive Hub

Atiku, Peter Obi’s gang up is no threat to 2027 for Tinubu – Progressive Hub

    …cautions against intra-APC crisis

Despite a renewed coalition by the opposition, the National Progressive Hub (NPH), a support group for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has predicted a victorious 2027 election for President Bola Tinubu.

The group asserted that the President’s outstanding performance during his first year in office has undermined the efforts of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), and other opposition figures.

Earlier this week, leading opposition figures have been meeting in what political observers describe as a realignment of forces ahead of the 2027 general election.

Addressing newsmen at the APC national secretariat in Abuja on Friday, May 17, Bukie Okangbe, the national coordinator of NPH, commented on the impact of President Tinubu’s first year in office.

He stated that while the opposition’s recent realignment of forces is aimed at the 2027 elections, its strategy has already faltered.

She said: “The ongoing alignment of political parties and politicians in the country shown obviously that some are ready to match up with us come 2027. We are confident though that Nigerians are with us more than they were during the last elections due to the leadership quality of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

Okangbe, however, advised leaders and members of the governing party should come together in unity, stressing that the game is gradually building up as many political parties and opposition members are mending fences to challenge the APC.

Appealing to party members, the group called for unity among party members, advising that “the witch-hunting of our leaders that have worked so hard for this administration during campaigns must stop. We should remain focused as one family.

“It is both human and natural that issues would arise within a political family from time to time but the ability to reconcile and move forward makes the difference. The way forward for us as a progressive government is for our party members to have a change of heart towards our leaders and stop the public embarrassment of dragging our leaders into the public.

“We are appealing to all our aggrieved progressive members to see our leaders as our representatives and hence, embrace them with love and open hearts. As a complete party man, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is an accommodating father who would surely carry everyone along so that no one would be left out.

“We believe that no amount of political alignment or strategies can vote us out in 2027 if we are united. The strength of APC lies in the faithfulness of its members and so the more we pull our leaders down in public, the more we make the opposition stronger. It is now getting worse that some progressive members are doing the work of opposition parties which is a sad reality.

“The National Progressives Hub stands with all our party leaders who worked tirelessly to deliver for our party in the last general election. We frown and reject any form of witch-hunt against our party leaders meanwhile opposition leaders indicted of corruption are walking free.

“We need all our leaders together and united because he has another election to win 2027.”

Appealing for the understanding and patience of Nigerians, Okangbe said, “We are mindful of the happenings in the country, especially with hardship and hunger faced by many families and households in the country, we plead with Nigerians to bear with the president and have faith in the administration.

“The president has given Nigerians his words that the present hardship is temporary and this he is committed to doing. As a leader with a large heart, Nigerians should just show a little more patience in the capacity of the president to fulfill His election promises.”

APC accuses Mutfwang of coercing lawmakers to sign post-dated resignation letter

    • Allegation unfounded, says Plateau govt

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and House of Assembly Speaker Gabriel Dewan of unlawfully coercing the party’s lawmakers in the state into signing post-dated resignation letters as condition for their inauguration.

APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, leveled the accusation against the governor and the Speaker in a statement yesterday in Abuja.

The statement reads: “The attention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been drawn to disturbing and unlawful acts of the governor of Plateau State, His Excellency Caleb Mutfwang, and the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Gabriel Dewan, in relation to APC members of the House of Assembly ordered by the Court of Appeal to be inaugurated as members of the Plateau State House of Assembly.

“The governor and the Speaker coerced and illegally procured APC lawmakers to sign post-dated resignation letters as a pre-condition for their inauguration as members of the Plateau State House of Assembly.”

It added: “Nine lawmakers that succumbed to the intimidation and coercion and signed the demanded post-dated resignation letters and verifying affidavits were inaugurated by the Speaker as members of the House of Assembly on April 5, 2024. Seven members-elect that refused to submit to this illegality were denied inauguration by the Speaker.”

APC described the governor’s and the Speaker’s action “as utterly outrageous, anti-democratic, illegal and a vile contempt of the binding judgment of the Court of Appeal that ordered the inauguration of all 16 APC members-elect as members of the House of Assembly”.

The party added: “We wonder why Governor Mutfwang and Speaker Dewan are unwilling and seemingly terrified to comply with a valid judgment of the Court of Appeal but would rather resort to illegal and underhand tactics to intimidate, blackmail, and cajole members to sign post-dated resignation letters in violation of the laws of our land.

“The continued refusal of the Speaker to inaugurate the remaining seven APC members who have stoutly refused to submit to this illegality has become a clear and present threat to the peace and stability of Plateau State.

“Constituents of yet-to-be-inaugurated members are becoming increasingly restive and may resort to peacefully protesting the unlawful refusal to inaugurate their elected representatives.

This is avoidable and must be avoided. The good people of Plateau State deserve to live in peace and security. Governor Mutfwang bears a solemn duty to govern fairly, maintaining peace and security, upholding the law, and doing justice to all, irrespective of political differences.

“We call on the Speaker to unconditionally swear in the remaining seven APC lawmakers without further delay in keeping with the judgment of the Court of Appeal.”

Also, Plateau State’s Information and Communication Commissioner Musa Ashom said the allegation was unfounded.

“We are in a democratic era, not a military era. Such an allegation cannot be true as far as the state government is concerned,” he said.

  • Ondo APC aspirants call for genuine reconciliation

Ondo APC aspirants call for genuine reconciliation

Seven of 17 governorship aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state have called for genuine reconciliation, following the post-primary crisis.

They said in a statement that the party should put its house in order ahead of the November poll.

The seven contenders are Morayo Lebi, Professor Dayo Faduyile, Dr Soji Ehinlanwo, Prince Diran Iyantan, Mayowa Akinfolarin, Funmilayo Waheed-Adekojo, and Jimi Odimayo.

They urged party members who have a genuine interest in the success of the party to embrace peace for a resounding victory in the polls.

The statement reads: “The party position is that His Excellency, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, is our gubernatorial candidate, this position should be sacrosanct to us all even when some of us have expressed some reservations. We acknowledge that perfection is a moving target.

“As party leaders who have contributed significantly to nurturing the Party to impressive growth, we cannot allow anything that could lead to the polarisation of our Party with the potential consequence of undermining unity within our party.

“We, therefore, call on our supporters and all stakeholders to put aside personal interests and allow the overriding interest of the party to take precedence.

“Victory for our party in the upcoming November Governorship election is of paramount importance.  We therefore call on all Party men and women to rally behind our party’s candidate – His Excellency Lucky Aiyedatiwa – henceforth, to achieve outstanding victory

“We hereby appeal to other aspirants and members of our great party, who are aggrieved to put aside their grievances in the larger interest of the party. We need everyone on board in the collective march towards victory. We endorse genuine reconciliation efforts as proposed by our party.”

  • Ekiti APC leaders kick against appointment of Fayose’s men by Oyebanji’

Ekiti APC leaders kick against appointment of Fayose’s men by Oyebanji’

Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State have kicked against the appointment of former Governor Ayodele Fayose’s loyalists into political officers.

A statement yesterday by convener of the Concerned Ekiti APC Stakeholders, Prince Aderobaki Adeleye, noted that in spite of their numerous sacrifices and contributions to the success of APC in the last poll, appointments were given to members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Adeleye, who described the action as unacceptable and capable of creating division in the APC, urged Governor Abiodun Oyebanji to ‘redress the anomaly in the interest of the party’s survival before it is too late’.

Read Also: UPDATED: We can’t rightfully judge Tinubu’s govt in one year – Bishop Kukah

The statement reads: “Recent appointments by Governor Biodun Oyebanji have unduly favoured known opposition figures who did not contribute anything to the success of the APC, while loyal party members have been sidelined.

“A thorough perusal of the lists of SAs, SSAs and others, showed that associates of former Governor Fayose have been unduly favoured to the exclusion of APC members. As loyal party men, we view this development as unfair, unjust and a direct affront to our collective sensibilities.

“We understand that besides these appointments, the former governor has been enjoying some undeserved benefits and patronages, while leaders of the APC who toil day and night to ensure victory for the party have been left in the cold. We, therefore, call on the national leadership to rein in Governor Oyebanji to urgently correct these missteps in the overall interest and wellbeing of party members.

“While we concede to the fact that Fayose is a former governor, the question is how many APC members got appointments when he was at the helm of affairs in our state.”

But the APC Publicity Secretary Segun Dipe dismissed the claims as unfounded and in bad faith.

According to him, Governor Oyebanji has been deferring to the party before making appointments, even making it clear from inception that he would carry former governors along in his administration irrespective of their political inclinations.

Dipe also advised the aggrieved members to channel their grievances to the appropriate organs of the party.

  • APC’s mixed bag of challenges in the North

APC’s mixed bag of challenges in the North

As the All Progressives Congress (APC) reconciliation committee gets down to business, UJA EMMANUEL (Makurdi), KOLADE ADEYEMI (Jos), ADEKUNLE JIMOH (Ilorin), LINUS OOTA (Lafia), VICTOR GAI (Jalingo), ONIMISI ALAO (Yola), AUGUSTINE OKEZIE (Katsina) and ABDULGAFAR ALABELEWE (Kaduna) provide an insight into the nature of the crises in their respective states

The last general election affected different states in the North in various ways. So, it is going to be a mixed bag of fortunes for the reconciliation committee recently set up by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) when it gets to the region, as the party is facing some challenges in some states and little or none in others.

Benue:Not too long after Governor Hyacinth Alia won his election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State, a crack was noticed within the party, particularly between him and the man who aided his emergence as the number one citizen of the state, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume. This became evident as chieftains of the party loyal to Akume, who was the undisputed leader of the party in Benue, began to accuse Governor Alia of abandoning the real APC members who laboured for his victory and patronising PDP members who worked against his election.

Akume had been governor for eight years, a senator for 12 years, a minister under the Buhari administration and now the SGF. So he was instrumental in Rev. Fr. Alia becoming the governor after the tenure of former Governor Samuel Ortom.  Before Alia joined the race to secure the governorship ticket of the APC, there was an array of aspirants within the party gunning for the ticket, including Chief Mike Aondoakaa (SAN), Chief Barnabas Gemade, and Professor Terhemba Shija among others.

Yet Alia who joined the party just before the preparations for the election began got the ticket on a platter of gold; against all expectations. The trio of Gemade, Aondoakaa and Shija after the APC primary challenged the outcome up to the Supreme Court but lost.

The crisis within the party became evident with the appointment of key aides to the governor, such as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and the Chief of Staff. It escalated with the appointment of principal officers of the Benue State House of Assembly, where the APC State Working Committee (SWC) headed by Chairman Austin Agade, sent a list to be elected as Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Majority leader but it was turned down. The same trend continued with the nomination of commissioners, chairmen of the 23 local government areas, and heads of agencies and parastatals. As a result, party loyalists cried out that the governor was not carrying them along.

The situation worsened when the state APC chairman, Austin Agada was said to have been suspended by his ward executives for gross misconduct and anti-party activities. The chairman of Guma Local Government Area, Lazuras Asema, a die-hard supporter of Akume told The Nation that the only thing that will guarantee peace is to allow the status quo to remain. Asema said: “Governor Alia joined that party a few months before elections and the party made available all the logistics and structures for him to win. But, now, he wants to dismantle the structures that gave him victory.”

However, the Chairman of the Benue State Traditional Council and Tor Tiv, Prof. James Ayatse, has taken the first step in the reconciliation between Governor Alia and Senator Akume, by hosting a peace meeting at his palace in Gboko on Easter Monday, April 1, 2024, to reconcile the two APC leaders.

    Plateau:

The emergence of Rufus Bature as the Plateau APC chairman in 2022 signalled the beginning of the current crisis in the chapter. After the state congress, aggrieved stakeholders petitioned the party’s national secretariat. Two parallel congresses were conducted where two chairmen — Rufus Bature and Ishaya Itse Azi — emerged.

While the dust thrown up by the congress was yet to settle, the 2023 governorship primary opened another chapter of grievances for many stakeholders. This was because there was a disagreement over the emergence of Dr Nentawe Yilwatda as the party’s candidate for the election.

After the primary, the 17 aggrieved aspirants threatened to dump the party on allegations of lack of internal democracy. These two scenarios were compounded by the outcome of the last general election where the APC lost out at the presidential poll, the National Assembly, the governorship, and the state assembly elections.

Nevertheless, Bature believes there is no faction in Plateau APC. He told The Nation on the phone in Jos: “In Plateau APC, there is no faction. As far as I know, there is no faction that I am aware of. The position of the APC has always remained, where it was before. We are one and we remain one. The only work the reconciliatory committee has on the Plateau is to talk to those who feel aggrieved by the outcome of the party primaries. If they feel aggrieved, at least they should state their grievances so that the reconciliatory committee can find a way to make amends.”

The factional chairman, Ishaya Itse, said the recent Court of Appeal judgment in his favour has simplified the job of the reconciliatory committee. He said: “I will insist that the NWC base their reconciliation on that judgment as the only way to restore peace in the chapter. I am the authentic chairman and I remain so until another state congress is held.”

    Kwara:

There is an uneasy calm in the Kwara State chapter of the APC. The internal wrangling within the party before the last general election appears to have abated. The infighting had led to the defection of some aggrieved members to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) before the presidential election. However, some days after the election, aggrieved members loyal to the then APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu returned to the fold.

But, the returnees are yet to be fully accommodated in the party. One of those aggrieved members told our correspondent: “Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is behaving as if he does not need anybody. I don’t think he is ready for peace. In some local government areas, we have like three or four factions. The chapter is not at peace.”

But, Chairman, Prince Sunday Fagbemi, disagrees. He said: “Most of what you are hearing are mere speculations. The APC is not factionalized in any local government area in the state. There is no infighting in Kwara APC. Appointments are currently in abeyance. In the next appointment, you will see that everyone will be properly integrated. I stand to be challenged; there is peace in Kwara APC.”

    Adamawa:

Adamawa APC appears calm on the surface, but beneath lies a deep rancour. The only visible crisis is the disagreement over the Numan Local Government exco. One Mr Gentle Pharis was on March 26 sworn in as the council’s APC chairman, while supporters of Ndiako Mariko, who earlier secured a court verdict against his suspension, have insisted that he (Mariko) remains the authentic chairman.

Nevertheless, the disagreement over the chairmanship of the Numan chapter can be easily sorted out. But, trouble is expected to rear its head over the 2027 governorship election because the party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Aishatu Ahmed Binani and National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu are expected to be front runners.

When the APC failed to retain the governorship seat in 2019, the failure was blamed on the internal conflict within the party, particularly as Ribadu and Aisha Buhari’s brother, Halilu Modi, lost the ticket to Jibrilla Bindow. Both reportedly rallied supporters to work against Bindow during the general election which he lost to Ahmadu Fintiri of the PDP.

During the last general election, the same Ribadu who lost the APC governorship ticket to Binani was also believed to have worked with Aisha Buhari behind the scenes to undermine the APC governorship candidate during the general election.

In February this year, the party’s state executive committee met at the state secretariat and blamed  Binani for the party’s defeat. They said she was arrogant and highhanded in her approach and that she was fighting everyone, instead of rallying their support.

    Kaduna:

In Kaduna State, there is a cold war between Governor Uba Sani and his predecessor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai. The crisis has been simmering for some time but has been carefully managed until now. It came to public knowledge on Saturday, March 30 when Governor Sani revealed, while addressing a town hall meeting, that the El-Rufai administration left a huge debt burden that is currently hindering the implementation of the government’s developmental projects.

The governor told the gathering which had in attendance prominent stakeholders like emirs, chiefs, former military administrators, members of the Elders Forum, as well as former top government functionaries that the state is now paying back the foreign components of the debts in triple folds, considering the current high foreign exchange rate. Sani said his administration inherited a huge debt burden of $587 million, N85 billion and N115 billion contractual liabilities from the previous administration and that he has not borrowed a kobo in the last 10 months of his government.

He explained that seven out of the N10 billion federal allocation for March was deducted to service the debt and that the state was left with only N3 billion. This, he added, was not enough to settle the monthly salary bill.  One time Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Lawal Samaila Yakawada told the governor to constitute a commission of inquiry to find out how his processor spent $350 million in foreign and other domestic loans.

One of El-Rufai’s loyalists, Woman Leader Maryam Suleiman was immediately suspended for criticizing Governor Sani over the debt issue. A few hours after the town hall meeting, El-Rufai’s son, Bashir reacted to the governor’s revelation, by accusing him of incompetence. He said the move against the former governor was to cover Governor Sani’s incompetence.

Before the debt controversy, El-Rufai visited Kaduna to condole with the people of Tudun Biri over the erroneous drone attack. But, unlike other prominent politicians and dignitaries, the former governor went straight to the village alongside the former Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, without visiting the Government House.

    Kano:

All is not well with the Kano State chapter of the APC. The crisis came to a head when some persons described as imposters by the APC leadership purportedly suspended National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje at his ward in Dawakin-Tofa Local Government Area. Ganduje was purportedly ‘suspended’ because of the allegations of corruption levelled against him by the Kano State government.

Former National Vice Chairman, Salihu Usman believes Ganduje’s current travail may not be unconnected to the political rivalry between him (Ganduje) and his predecessor as governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. While addressing party members from his ward who paid a solidarity visit to him at the APC national secretariat in Abuja, Dr Ganduje equally attributed the unfolding political scenario to a plot by Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, who was elected on the platform of Kwankwaso’s New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). The ploy, Dr Ganduje said, is to weaken APC in the state ahead of the 2027 general election and other electoral contests.

Usman who spoke during a current affairs programme on Arise TV has enjoined Dr Ganduje and the APC leadership not to shy away from the reality but to take a sombre look at the party’s challenges in Kano, like elsewhere in the country, to find a lasting solution.

    Taraba:

Taraba APC appears calm. The party spokesman, Aaron Artimas told our correspondent that the challenge the APC had before the last general election arose because of the conflict of interests of certain politicians. He added: “But, immediately after the elections, they have set aside their differences. Initially, they sought to divide the exco by creating a parallel body. But, the chairman was not recognized by the national secretariat. Immediately after, the exco realized it had just been used to advance certain interests. Members later returned to the fold and we have a full house now. Today, the chapter is united and we have been meeting.

“The chairman of the party had constituted a local reconciliation committee. Just recently, they submitted their report. Sani Sule Sale was the chairman of that committee. They went around and discussed. They didn’t have many grievances beyond what happened. It was done for personal interest and not because they wanted to advance the party’s interest.  That so-called faction has collapsed into the party and we are working together. There is no need for reconciliation because Taraba State has only one recognized exco under Sadiq El-sudi.”

    Nasarawa:

Similarly, there appears to be no crisis in Nasarawa APC, because of the leadership style of Governor Abdullahi Sule. The party’s Publicity Secretary, Douglas Otaru told our correspondent in Lafia that the two former governors, Senators Abdullahi Adamu and Umaru Tanko Al-Makura have contributed to the peace and harmony within the party. He added: “Governor Sule always consults them before any major decision is taken in the party. So, there is no internal wrangling or acrimony in the chapter.

“The party is united and in support of its leader, Governor Abdullahi Sule. All past leaders, elected representatives appointees and party members across wards and local government area level are loyal and answerable to the governor. There is absolutely no crisis in Nasarawa State APC.”

    Katsina:

The Katsina State chapter of the APC is not experiencing any crisis requiring the attention of the recently set up reconciliation committee. Secretary of the Katsina State Central Working Committee, Suleiman Muhammad Namadi, told our correspondent that the reconciliation committee expected to visit the state soon may have little or no work to do. He said the administration of Governor Dikko Umar Radda is carrying everyone along in the scheme of things.

He said: “The Katsina State APC is not experiencing any crises; everyone is happy with the leadership of Governor Radda.’’

The chapter recently dissolved its state and local government stakeholders committees. The party leadership also announced the dissolution of its stakeholders committee at state and local government levels.

Edo APC tackles Obaseki’s ally over pecuniary gains from state govt

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Edo state chapter, has tackled the special adviser to Governor Godwin Obaseki on media projects, Pastor Crusoe Osagie, on pecuniary gains from Edo government.

Osagie alleged that a lot of efforts and tactics were being deployed by people with selfish political interests to silence the voice of reason, truth and upend objectivity.

He said: “In Edo, a lot of effort has been made by a small segment of political actors to rewrite the history of the last seven and a half years, and their reason for doing this is simple: pecuniary.

“Unfortunately for this small segment of politicians in our society, who used to depend absolutely on state gratification for their opulent living, Governor Obaseki’s approach to governance occasioned the redistribution of resources from people with political access to the generality of Edo citizens.

“Funds that could have been deployed for orgies, opulent overseas trips, flamboyant medical tourism, and other frivolities have now been redirected for the construction of institutions.

“Funds that would have been ferried away in sacks, popularly called ‘Ghana Must Go,’ after pointless meetings in Government House, have now been channeled towards the reconstruction and equipping of the State Secretariat Complex on Sapele Road, construction of the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service  Academy (JOOPSA), in Benin City, construction of the Adams Oshiomhole Labour House, in Ikpboa Hill; establishing the e-governance system that allows the government to run a paperless public service, prompt payment of salaries and pensions to workers and retirees, and payment of N70,000 as minimum wage, which is the highest in the country, among others.

“By these good deeds, Obaseki has murdered sleep. A segment of the politically powerful are upset. They have vowed to destroy the reputation and legacy of the man, who dared to interrupt the flow of state funds to satisfy their voracious appetite.”

The media aide to Obaseki also claimed that Edo residents were overwhelmed by a deluge of lies, and they could hardly find space to accommodate the primacy of truth.

Edo APC, through its assistant publicity secretary, Victor Osehobo, however, declared that Osagie’s statement was a wasted and unnecessary effort, while stressing that it was easy to see through the acclaimed journalist struggling to be a clergyman’s failed attempt to squeeze water from a stone.

It said: “Edo people know for a fact that the only people who fit into Osagie’s defined selfish political interests to silence the voice of reason, truth and upend objectivity can be found inside Osadebey Avenue (Government House), Benin City. They are the governor’s praise singers and sycophants, who get occasional crumbs from his table.

“They are the small segment of political actors, who chose to join Edo governor in his failed attempt to rewrite the history of Edo people in the last seven and a half years, for pecuniary gains. It was they who advised Obaseki to betray his predecessor in office, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, and other benefactors. They praised him when he demolished private residences with official Certificates of Occupancy (C of Os). They clapped for him when he demolished legacy public institutions like the Central Hospital and the State Library in Benin City. They sang choruses for him when he wanted to misappropriate the Benin artefacts.

“These people are the beneficiaries of his spurious Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs); partnerships and alliances, including that of Gelegele Seaport, which gulped millions of Edo tax payers money in feasibility studies, but never saw the light of the day. They are the only ones who clap for him over promises of the never-to-see-reality Benin Industrial Park, the Airport in Fugar, Uzairue and Okpella, the Benin City Railway line, and the University of Innovation, among other unfulfilled electoral promises.

“They jubilated when Obaseki shut all tertiary academic institutions in Edo State, and sacked their staff, with arrears of salaries unpaid. Need we mention the oil derivation funds, the bail-out funds or the refunds for federal roads reconstructed by the state government, which disappeared without a trace or explanation?”

The main opposition APC in Edo also stated that the state governor’s approach to governance consisted of flagrant misuse and misappropriation of public funds, abuse of due process and the lack of transparency in the award of all contracts, with the absence of public advertisements of contracts or open bids.

Edo APC noted that Crusoe was conspicuously silent on the ownership status of key assets like the Edo refinery, MOWAA, Shoprite, and the Ossiomo power plant, the Sobe farm and other farms allegedly funded by a N2 billion loan from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and the substantial amount of Edo state’s funds that were locked up in Sterling Bank Plc, until recently chaired by the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo for the September 21 election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo.
