Osun APC and some hard home truths (2)

As of July 16, 2022, Iyiola Omisore, a Prince of Ife and a celebrated political strategist and master of the game, was the party’s National Secretary. Still, APC lost very badly in Ifeland. Incidentally, that’s where Sooko Tajudeen Lawal, the party’s current State Chairman, was also born. Lawal was at the time its Vice State Chairman. Most, if not all those who pretended to be Big Boys from Ifeland who served in the Oyetola-led government lost even their polling units. Was that also caused by Aregbesola? Again, why did APC contentedly slip into its familiar routine in Oriade and Obokun Local Governments? Why did it end up soaking in the enthusiasm of defeat in Iree in Boripe Local Government, despite what the former governor planted in the ancient town?

For Osun APC to have lost 28 out of 30 Local Governments and 1 Area Office, 25 out of 26 members in the State House of Assembly, and all the National Assembly seats, that speaks volume! But, rather than address the whys and wherefores that broke its heart, among which were greed, indiscipline, uncontrolled lust for privileges and the love of pelf, blame game took over. Osun APC surrendered to the superior firepower of betrayal from the people in power, failure to connect with the people, lack of sense of purpose, lack of shared vision and lofty ideals, lack of cohesion in the party and lack of control, and it was as if the gods were angry.

Whither the roles of the opposition in democracy and why is Osun APC not delivering on its newly-acquired mandate? Take, for instance, reports have it that Adeleke has for over a year been living in his sister’s house but unfortunately, the opposition is not seen to have been hard on an issue which in Yoruba culture amounts to a taboo. Well, while it’s not unusual for governors to live in their private residences while serving (as Lateef Jakande lived in his personal house, even rode in his famous Toyota Crown car as Governor of Lagos State, which of course could be attributed to his known simplicity and frugality), Nigerians hold the notion that Adeleke opted for that path so that the real masquerades who’re behind the scene can manage him and his excesses, and shield him from those who might wish to exploit his naivety in governance.

Although the governor has his personal house in Ede, he hardly ever stays there, and it is believed that he runs Osun State with the counsel and input from her sister who has her imprimatur on every appointment in the state. She’s even believed to be the de facto Commissioner for Works, a portfolio the governor withheld to himself. So, anyone who cannot cringe in their court had better forget getting anything from the government. Is it any wonder that, in Osun, the fear of ‘Yeye’ is the beginning of wisdom?

When Oyetola was to lose power in 2022, an uninformed cross-section of the public asked that power be taken away from ‘alakowe’ and given to ‘alakori’. In their opinion, if the former could not do it well, why not hand over the destiny of dear state to the latter? Not unsurprisingly, ‘Imole Osun’ has now come to town and … ‘the difference is clear.’ Amidst a litany of avoidable gaffes, the State Chief Judge would have long been removed from office and the governor’s vuvuzelas would have stood up and clapped for the king, were it not for the timely intervention of the National Judicial Council, NJC.

Again, who will help save Osun APC from Osun APC? Well, I have argued elsewhere that opposition roles are very difficult, especially in a democracy like ours. Not even in a situation where the ruling party has many advantages to its bidding: a monstrously rich dynasty, power which it knows how to effectively deploy, resources sufficient enough to play around with, and the sympathy of the electorate which, for obvious reasons, the ruling party currently enjoys.

I have also had the privilege of raising the issue of contact persons or rallying points in some of the localities in the state. For instance, I’ve cited the case of High Chief Dele Faseru, a respected PDP chieftain in Ijebu-Jesa who, for a very long time, has been the face of the PDP in Oriade Local Government and its environs; and the colourful politician has been delivering on that mandate. How many Dele Faserus are available to Osun APC and how many of them are accessible in the real sense of the word?

Like him or hate him, Oyetola is a fine gentleman and a true reflection of himself. He is not a pretender. Some Nigerians even accused the former governor of being accountable to the last penny at the expense of those who worked for him. In their view, it was accountability taken too far when he left N14 billion in Osun government coffers while the arrears of modulated salaries owed workers as well as November 2022 salaries of political functionaries in the state remained unsorted. Back to the substance of the situation, it needs to be noted that taking Osun APC back on the path of honour demands that Oyetola rethink strategies that can open the gate of hope. To get policies right, politics has to be alive. So, he needs to increase his efforts. He also needs to dig deeper into what variance of illness is actually attacking the party. He needs to look beyond the pathetic admonitions of the swallowers, time-servers and transactional politicians whose personal interests are at variance with the party’s overall interest. In a word, unless the party is prepared to let past troubles ignite positive opportunities, things will only get worse; and that will be bad for opposition politics.

Politics isn’t a funny game; it’s just that some of its practitioners are simply heartless and exceptionally selfish. Since ages, sycophancy has also been a big problem in politics. So, the onus is on Oyetola to rise above the deceit of the men-pleasers because money may manipulate the people but it doesn’t actually deceive the enemies. Since all politics is local, it behooves the leadership to instill a sense of trust in the followership and the followership to believe in the leadership, if the battle ahead is to be won. Who even knows if God allowed July 16, 2022 to happen to Osun APC so that He can use Oyetola to change the course of progressive politics in Nigeria, beginning with Osun State? So, it is up to the current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy to see to it that this House does not fall, for this, not the office he now occupies in Abuja, will define his legacy. While current efforts in that direction are a welcome development, public opinions favour something deeper than the ongoing sensitization ritual. Most importantly, the poor reward system and selection process, which contributed significantly to the party’s dismal outings in the past, must also be reviewed with a view to righting past wrongs.

In all, just as we expect in public administration, that ‘one person cannot know it all’; and, in democracy, that ‘one party cannot be omnipotent’, let there be ‘room for admissibility of divergent opinions’. Let ideas be transformed or updated ‘in line with dispensations’. Above all, let those working with Oyetola in this task of repositioning Osun APC bear in mind that politics is not a cult and that what defines it is not always about one geography against another but inclusive winning streaks that will help return the party to its past glory.

May the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, grant us peace in Osun State!

I didn’t receive N800m for prosecution of 2019 election, says ex-Kwara APC chair

Former chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara state, Bashir Bolarinwa, has refuted claims that he had any knowledge of a sum of N800 million allegedly given to the party by the former national chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole for the prosecution of the 2019 governorship election.

Senator Oshiomhole recently claimed that the party expended over N4 billion to win the Kwara, Imo, and Ogun state governorship elections in 2019.

Reacting to the allegation, Bolarinwa said: “I am saying this as the state chairman of APC that led the Otoge movement in 2019 that I am not aware of the money. Through APC’s victory in the election was one of the major achievements of the then Adams Oshiohmole-led national APC, but I was and still am not aware of any N800 million given to the party in the state.

“I am not saying that Senator Oshiohmole does not know what he is saying, but I am sure he would know the person he handed over the money to and where the money was collected.

“It is disturbing that after the electoral victory of the APC in Kwara state, most of the people who worked for the success of the party were sidelined and abandoned during the period.

“Even, all the efforts made to the national secretariat of the party under the caretaker chairman of the party under Governor Buni to enable him to intervene were rebuffed because the caretaker chairman and his cohorts had made up their mind not to support Bola Ahmed Tinubu for anything but we thank God today. It is unfortunate that the crisis created has continued to linger.”

On President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the former lawmaker urged Nigerians to bear with the administration.

He said: “I served under Tinubu when he became governor of Lagos state in 1999.

“Initially, that time too things were tough as he was trying to put things right. Later on, things picked up and became better and Lagos is still enjoying it till tomorrow. By the grace of God Nigerians will soon be laughing.”

House of Reps: PDP loses again to APC in Imo

The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos State yesterday upturned the tribunal victory of the member representing Nkwerre/Nwangele/Isu/Njaba federal constituency, Ugonna Ozuruigbo.

The court declared Harrison Nwadike, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the February 25 House of Representatives election, as the winner of the exercise.

Ozuruigbo, a second-timer at the National Assembly and a former deputy speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, won at the lower court (tribunal), but unfortunately faced a reversal of his victory with the ruling of the appellate court yesterday.

This decision by the court brings to an end the prolonged legal battle surrounding the representation of the federal constituency, adjudged as the biggest in the country, comprising four local governments.

Ozuruigbo, a former APC member under ex-Governor Rochas Okorocha had defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where he secured ticket and won at the polls.

It will be recalled that his declaration as the winner of the election came 63 days after the exercise due to some irregularities witnessed in the election as claimed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He had served a successful one year tenure at the lower chamber of the National Assembly and a two-term Imo State House of Assembly member, who represented Nwangele State Constituency.

With the sack of Ugonna Ozuruigbo, Imo State PDP has again lost another at the National Assembly, after losing Jonas Okeke of Okigwe South Federal Constituency, who was earlier sacked by the Appeal Court to usher in a three-term member, Chike Okafor of the APC extraction.

2027: Stop distracting Tinubu, APC chieftain Mumuni tells Yerima-led forum

A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Ambassador Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has emphasised that President Bola Tinubu is currently focused on the challenging task of governing the country and providing hope for the Nigerian people.

Mumuni stated that the president should not be distracted by political charades and shenanigans at this crucial moment in the country’s trajectory.

His comments were made in response to reports that some APC presidential aspirants in the 2023 election are forming a forum aimed at garnering support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

According to media reports, a political group called Forum of 2023 APC Presidential Aspirants was inaugurated on December 18 in Abuja with former Zamfara state governor, Ahmed Sani Yerima, as its convener.

In a statement released by his media aide, Rasheed Abubakar on Tuesday, December 19, Mumuni urged the former presidential aspirants to support President Tinubu in ensuring national security and revitalizing the economy for the benefit of all Nigerians.

He said: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has since moved on from the 2023 election. From all indications, he is now busy with governance and his promise to bring renewed hope to the masses. We know how demanding all these can be; so the President should not be distracted with political shenanigans at this very defining period of our nationhood.

“It’s too early to be forming a forum for 2027 politics. We all know this is a mere smokescreen by the former presidential aspirants to court personal favours from the President. They should not distract him. If they are truly motivated by patriotism, they should support the efforts of President Tinubu by contributing to the development of their various states and impacting the livelihood of the masses.”

The renowned author and security expert also said that the president has enough advisers already in his cabinet.

He added: “It is laughable that people who need advice are seeking to play advisory roles to the President. All these are a political charade. It is not what our beloved country needs now. The President has enough advisers already in his cabinet.

“The former presidential aspirants will do well to reflect on the gaps across sectors in the country and play their roles as statesmen to fix them. They can do this without noise. We have private players without political posts contributing enormously to our country and its people.

“I am afraid that if this charade is entertained, we might start having associations of former ministers, former special assistants, former this and that trying to flock to the Aso Villa in the name of serving advisory roles.”

“And again, I am also looking at giving some of them health insurance, insure their health through Lagos State Health Insurance Scheme, Ilera Eko. At least, I will start with about a 100 of them, the poor and the vulnerable in our group. I will register 100 households and that will comprise husband, wife and four children that are below age of 20 in every household.

“Again, on education, I am going to supply school materials, particularly benches and chairs. I have plans to start an Adult Literacy Class.

Supreme Court ruling: No deal with Governor Yusuf, says APC

The Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday said it has no deal with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to compromise the court judgment.

The party also debunked rumours that tension was brewing in Kano over the governor’s electoral loss at the tribunal and appeal court.

The APC state Chairman, Prince Abbas Abdullahi, in a statement described as “untrue and frivolous,“ rumours that Yusuf has struck a deal with the party to surrender its arguments at the Supreme Court, to pave the way for the governor’s victory and subsequent defection to APC.

The party also described as fake news, rumours that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has agreed to intervene in the Supreme Court judgment so as to ensure declaration of Governor Yusuf as the authentic Governor of Kano State by the Apex Court.

The APC head in Kano explained that neither the party nor the president has the powers to negotiate the outcome of the expected judgment at the Supreme Court or any court for that matter.

He added that President Tinubu has not held a meeting and would not hold any meeting or intervened in the matter in favour of the NNPP candidate to remain as Governor and subsequently decamp to APC.

The statement also dismissed speculations and rumours of agreement and reconciliation between the NNPP and the APC.

Abdullahi said: “The rumours had it that the NNPP has reached out to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the matter in favour of the NNPP candidate to remain as governor and subsequently decamp to the APC. There is nowhere such meeting was held with either Mr President or any leader of the party.

“President Bola Tinubu is a democrat and strongly believes in the rule of law and the right thing to be done and therefore will not be part of any arrangement or reconciliation to subvert justice and support people who have stolen votes or breached the electoral act to emerge as leaders. APC as a party is not aware of such arrangement and would instead intensify all efforts to pursue its case at the Supreme Court to a logical conclusion.”

He expressed optimism that his party would emerge victorious at the Supreme  Court, “especially from the concrete and convincing evidence presented at both the Tribunal and the Appeal Court which ultimately led to our party’s success.”

The APC chief also dismissed fears that crisis may broke out in Kano after the Supreme Court judgment, insisting that there was no tension in Kano.

According to him, “the people are rather happy with the recent developments emanating from the judgment of both Tribunal and Appeal Court and therefore anxiously waiting for the Apex Court to endorse the two concurrent rulings.

“Kano is very peaceful and the people are conducting their normal business, despite all efforts by the NNPP to provoke and incite youth to create unnecessary political crisis in the state,” he said.

He appealed to APC members and supporters to ignore NNPP’s propaganda and provocation and remain calm because Kano would always remain peaceful.

One of the pillars of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State, Hilary Udeano, has dumped the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He joined the party with no fewer than 2,000 members, having served as a local government chairman in Anambra East Local Government during the administration of Chief Willie Obiano.

Speaking with The Nation, Udeano said they were the people that made APGA thick in Anambra State, adding that he had come to bring that same energy into the APC.

He said he joined APGA at that time to help his brother, who was the governor, adding that governorship election in Anambra in 2025 would not be easy for APGA again, especially in Anambra East Council.

During the gathering of the party at the weekend in Awka, one of the chieftains of APC in Anambra State, Chief Paul Chukwuma, gave Christmas gifts, including rice and cash worth over N200 million, to the party members.

He said it was his little way of lifting members of his party in Anambra State since APC was not the party in power in the state.

The Deputy National Organising Secretary of APC, Nze Chidi Duru, hailed Chukwuma for the kind gesture.

He called on the party faithful to make unity of purpose their watchword, noting that togetherness remained the only reason the party would succeed in taking over power from APGA.

The state APC Chairman, Chief Basil Ejidike, advised other wealthy members of the party in the state to emulate Chukwuma, saying such gesture had never been done in the state.

He noted that the gesture would strengthen peace and unity among members in Anambra and beyond.

    • Ruling party dispels rumours with opposition

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday dispelled rumours of having a deal with the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to influence the Supreme Court to rule in favour of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf.

The party also debunked the existence of any deal in which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu agreed that the NNPP candidate would remain the governor and alter defection to the APC.

In a statement in Abuja, Kano State APC Chairman Abdullahi Abbas dismissed the speculation of any agreement and reconciliation between the party and the NNPP.

He described the insinuations as “mere rumours”.

Abbas said: “The rumours had it that the NNPP has reached out to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the matter in favour of the NNPP candidate to remain as governor and subsequently decamp to the APC.
